My wife and I went into AFF to simply look around after a nice meal next door. Dale Miller greeted us and gave us some time to soak it in. After a while he asked us what we were up. We let him know that we were day-dreaming and collecting ideas for a future residence. He was so cool about it. We got to chatting about all sorts of things which led us to mention that we were looking to sell our current home, and the main thing we needed to do to our current home to ensure a sale. That main thing was to replace our back door. Our realtor told us two things: 1) clean the brick over the fireplace, 2) replace the sliding back door. Dale mentioned he could assist us with that issue. Despite being a 'flooring guy," he provided a proposal that was the most competitive against others we received. Michael Shelton showed up, installed the door with his assistant (both pleasant - we talked 80's sitcoms) and cleaned up afterwards. This all happened within an 8-hour day. They had to make some cuts into the frame due to an uncommon door size and matched the paint perfectly. Austin Fine Floors installed wood floors throughout my home, tile flooring, and created a new shower in an area that was a soaker tub. AND, they also handled remodeling the rest of the areas that needed attention. The knowledge and character of Ryan Drouin and the craftsmanship of the work completed sets them apart from other flooring/ remodeling companies. Here is an example: I had flooring from another well known company and the work doesn't even come close in quality. The previous floor had a transition strip around the fireplace surround because the installation was uneven. Austin Fine Floor's installation is precise and no transition is used. The tile work of the previous company was sloppy around the perimeter of the room so that a shoe moulding was needed. AFF tile installation was straight and close to the wall. No shoe moulding was needed. AFF came in after mold remediation was complete so some special things needed to be done and I had requested non toxic building materials and installation. Ryan worked with the situation and they did a fantastic job! I highly recommend Austin Fine Floors. You won't find more honest and hard working people. We contacted Austin Fine Floors based on a recommendation from our Realtor. We first visited the south Austin showroom to get an idea of the flooring colors and wood species they carried, and met with Jean to discuss an in-home consultation. Ryan came by for a measurement and with some samples, and we discussed the plans we had to replace basically everything on the ground floor with engineered hardwood. A few days later, Jean came by the house with more samples, and spent a great deal of time discussing pros and cons of various wood species that would match (or at least clash least) with our layout, existing furniture, and woodwork. We settled on a wood that we had seen online but hadn't appreciated until viewing in person, and signed the contract for installation. Less than three weeks later the lumber was in and we got a call from Roger to schedule the demolition and install. We had planned on having a bit more time to prepare, but Roger noted a space in the install schedule that would allow demo to begin the very next day, if we could be ready. We spent the afternoon and evening before the demo day moving everything from downstairs to upstairs or to the garage, and prepared the house as best we could for the demo. The crew arrived promptly in the early morning on the day of demolition, and immediately got to work. Big furniture that could not be moved to the garage was wrapped securely in painter's plastic, and the appliances and kitchen cabinets were also sealed. The stairs were sealed as well, to minimize as much as possible dust getting into places it didn't belong. The tile was a challenge for the crew to remove, and the slab was not as level as they would have hoped, but after adding extra leveling cement the demo was done in three days. The extra leveling cement was an added cost, but I have watched enough HGTV to know that added costs are par for the course in home renovations. Install began on time on the first weekday after the demo was completed, and went smoothly. The stairs in our house are central-core stairs that have a 180 degree twist with two landings, so that required a great deal of custom cutting. The upstairs landing is also a complicated layout, requiring more custom cutting. The crew never complained and were nothing less than consummate professionals. It was a pleasure to come home every day and see progress, even though we were living in a construction zone for two weeks. Once the stairs were finished, the new baseboards were installed. We had thought baseboards were included in the original estimate, but that was not the case. The new baseboards look great, and they were the right call, but it was another decent-sized added expense to the install. The main lesson there is to be as clear as possible when going over the original details of the install to make sure everything is covered. If any questions, ask! The floors were done in less than two work weeks. We went from tile and carpet on the ground floor to no tile anywhere except the upstairs bathrooms, and no carpet anywhere except the upstairs bedrooms. We love the way the floors look, and people who have visited since they were installed remark how well they match the existing stair rails and our furniture. I have spent the last month spot-cleaning gummy marks left on the floor from the installers, which appears to be from the glue-down of the boards, and that's taken me weeks to attempt to remove, but they're only noticeable to me. In general, we are very pleased with the quality of the work and would recommend Austin Fine Floors to anyone who is looking to install wood floors in their home. read more

Austin Fine Floors was suggested to me by a coworker and I am happy that I used them. Austin Fine Floors supplied me with my hardwoods for redoing all of the flooring in my house, and the experience was wonderful. They sat down with me looked through their flooring and when I found something else I liked online they got me a full sample and were able to get me the flooring at a GREAT price. The only issue I had was minor... I payed a hefty price for delivery since hard woods cost a lot, but wasn't told that it wouldn't be delivered to me, but instead a warehouse. I thought that could have been made clearer, especially when I asked to have the delivery delayed specifically because I hadn't yet closed on the house so I couldn't accept delivery yet. Worked out fine because I could carry the order in my SUV (barely) otherwise it would have been an additional delivery expense. read more

We have also worked with Dale M in the past on a different house, and he was exceptionally kind and helpful, delivering excellent work. I would have given AFF 5 stars, except that 2-3 new bottles of expensive hand soap disappeared from the house while the crew was on site (I had brought them over to the empty house so that the crew would have hand soap). Of course I can't be sure where they went, but I was disappointed to find that the sweet crew hadn't kept an eye out for runaway hand soap. Nevertheless, I'd hire 'em again... Just might opt for a generic brand of hand soap ; ) read more

It had been over a month since I was promised to have carpet installed for 1560 sq ft. Their sales person was helpful right up until a down payment was placed on the order. They were unresponsive to phone calls until I talked to an owner. In all fairness, I have had them do a great job on another project for a large open space. They were on time and the better price. We were quoted 5 days for the job of a new kitchen floor and it took 17. The first 5 days they had one old man to demolish the old floor and move one industrial freezer and two large refrigerators. There was never a supervisor present. The freezer was unplugged and AFF made the old man pay for the lost food. The thresholds were never put in until we repeatedly called them and told them how many toes were stubbed and how many trips occurred. They did not plane down the doors. The floor constantly looks dirty - - we can not get it clean. Do not use AFF. read more

This company was selected because of work that they had previously done on the same property some years prior, and their prices were competitive. The salesman was actually quite good and we felt that he went the extra mile in the selection process. We had 2 different surfaces installed and there were problems with both. The natural stone had surface issues that were discovered prior to finish out. They were eventually identified to be a supplier issue, and would require an extra refinishing process to repair. Rather than just fixing the problem, ( a 2 day job ) they spent weeks attempting to defer the cost to the manufacturer, without any regard for customer inconvenience. ( there were countless unreturned phone calls during this time, as we attempted to get the problems resolved) The wood flooring itself went down just fine, but the associated trim work (quarter round and threshold ) was horrendous. They initially ordered the incorrect threshold and there was a lengthy delay to wait for the correct trim. The initial quarter round installation was so bad that we were originally going to pull it, but we had painters in the house that were able to make most of it it presentable. When the correct threshold arrived it was eventually installed, but 3 out of 4 pieces were laid with gaps. The threshold then had to be subsequently reordered with another delay. On the second installation attempt, they were one piece short and broke another during installation we were now facing another reorder and delay to correct the remaining 2 pieces. The "new" pieces somehow miraculously materialized overnight, and a 3rd attempt was scheduled for the following week. On the 3rd attempt they apparently brought the original ( incorrect ) threshold and installed it in the 2 remaining areas. ( these last 2 pieces did not match the other 2 thresholds, and one of the incorrect ones is not even installed properly ). We finally just paid them to go away, as each successive return was an imposition on our time as well. I had a number of conversations with an owner during the course of this comedy of errors, but his initial apparent concern eventually shifted to getting the rest of his money rather than customer satisfaction. This was not the same owner that I have seen mentioned in previous positive reviews. Based on our experience we found that this company lacks attention to detail on the part of the installers, and demonstrates a lack of quality control on the part of current mgt. Our advertised 4 day job wound up taking over 3 months, and was still not satisfactorily completed when we wrote the final check just to get rid of them. We will just have to hire someone else to correct the remaining errors. read more

When I got the same message from an architect friend, I decided to try them. I am now on my second project with Dale Miller and his staff. The first one exceeded my expectations in every way. The difference in quality is only a few dollars more ... the real cost in flooring is the installation; however, the quality will be highly evident for years to come. I was referred to Austin Fine Floors and Ryan Drouin by a friend. I had bought a house that had wood floors, tile floors and carpet. My wife and I were looking to replace the carpet and tile with all wood but wanted to match the wood that was already there. We called Ryan and told him what we wanted. The wood floors we already had were bought by the previous owner from Lowes several years before. After a couple of days Ryan came back to us and said he was able to match the floors. It took a while for the floors to come in because of all the sources he had to get it from but he made it happen. Our floors look great and the they are seamless. This was our second time working with Austin Fine Floors. They were great the first time, and even better the second time! Our home sustained water damage that caused us to need to replace a good amount of flooring. Dale was an exceptional and very patient partner as we reviewed different flooring options, changing course a couple of times. Through it all, he never pushed too hard and always worked to help us find the most beautiful product that would not break our budget. When we finally selected and ordered the wood, Ryan and Roger were wonderful partners during the installation process. We have terrible allergies, so everything from dust to mold to paint and adhesive fumes had to be carefully considered. I was starting a complete home renovation which meant flooring, bathroom tile, kitchen tile, etc all needed to be chosen. I stopped into the AFF store on William Cannon and found a tile I was considering for my kitchen. The gentleman working there had given me a quote per sq. ft. but I did not write it down. I returned the sample a few days later thinking it may the perfect for the kitchen. A week later I discovered another tile store in N. Austin that had a fantastic selection. I decided to take several of their samples AND stop by the AFF store so I could take everything home to look at it with my other design choices. This time, when I went in to borrow the original sample there was different man working. I stated that I wanted to take the sample with me again and could he please remind me of the price. He said pricing would have to wait until Monday because prices change all the time. What? I told him I had several samples in my car and planned to make some decisions that weekend and a price would be helpful. "Oh you have SEVERAL samples in your car, huh?" he said, dripping with sarcasm. I looked at him and said yes, I had gathered a lot of samples and wanted to decide, can he please give me a quote that weekend. This time he said "Oh, like you are going to have a heart attack if you don't get a quote before Monday?" I was really taken aback. He was rude, unhelpful, sarcastic and never did follow up with me over the weekend for the quote. Needless to say I went with another tile store in town and the experience there was really fantastic. I would never recommend AFF to anyone. I have never been treated so rudely. read more
