The food here was ok. I got the fried group with fries and hushpuppies. The service was not good. My dad ordered two meals, one for him and one for my step mom. After waiting for 20 minutes, he got one meal, because the foreign lady who took his order didn't understand English. The grouper was ok, but not as good as other places in the area. The hushpuppies were hard and not very good. We ordered two pounds of head on shrimp and took them home to grill, they were very good. This place. Lets start with this: There's a shark on top of the building. Really, what else is there? I kid, I kid. The COOKED food: Pretty darn good. They'll do whatever to it. Sides are pretty typical in my opinion but the fish is great. It's a very small place and there are a few picnic benches outside or you can take it to go. It's good, fast, fresh food but don't go thinking it's gonna be fancy. The non cooked stuff: Fantastic. We tend to stop here first to grab a few different types of fish, shrimp, etc to take to the rental house to cook up ourselves. I will say the shrimp and tuna specifically are always impressive for us. I haven't ever received a poor quality fish from them. The owners are nice. I know some have complained of the "grumpy lady that runs the register" - what she is, is efficient and probably gets tired of jerky people from time to time. I've never had anything but a pleasant experience, even when things are crazy busy in there. It's all about how you treat people - they'll treat you how you treat them, especially in the south. Don't miss this joint - especially if you're renting for a week or more and have your own kitchen or grill. We all know eating out can get old. I've been coming to the area for 4 years and never miss an opportunity to visit Austin's....sometimes, twice a day. It's hard to choose a restaurant to eat at when you know you can pick up a fresher than fresh piece of fish for half what you would pay at a sit down place. We travelled to Austin Fish Co. on the recommendation of a local. Not only were the prices impressive, but it was so fresh! We bought 2 tilapia dinners, a grouper dinner, and 1/2 a lb. of scallops. We had a few sandwiches here and none were what I would say were stellar. I had the grouper and the bread was stale. The chowder was good though. Ordering is weird and the lady who took our order was curt and just not very friendly. She seemed annoyed the whole time. Had I not been with a few other people, I'd have just left. During our trip to the OB, we asked the first local we met where he would go to buy local seafood. His response, "Don't waste your time going anywhere but Austins." He pointed the way and off we went. Picked up two beautiful Tuna steaks, some Mahi and a pound of scallops. Great prices and was amazing grilled up. Went back the next day to try the prepared stuff. Excellent fried shrimp ($11.99 for regular size, $8.99 for popcorn) and very affordable in comparison to seafood restaurants. Staff was friendly, patient, and helpful in suggesting size/type of shrimp for cooking at home. Very casual with only outdoor seating/to-go plates, but great food. read more

Ok, the fish for sale is great, the soups are great, the hush puppies are great - BUT the sandwiches are sub-par and pretty bland. Yum! Yum! Just returned to Raleigh from a week at OBX. Ate a cooked meal from there one evening, flounder/scallops/oysters - delicious. We had a horrible experience here. I asked three times of two different people if the fish was fresh or frozen we were told everything was fresh (then at checkout told that it wasn't even shrimp season and that all the shrimp were frozen). We purchased tuna and spanish mackerel, the tuna was obviously frozen and one of the spanish mackerel filets had to be thrown out as it was obviously slipped in there between the fresher filets. We had fried oyster sandwiches which were okay, but they served our steamed clams with "nutter" or new word for whatever that stuff is that is NOT-butter. read more

we were looking for a fresh seafood shack for dinner... this place hit the spot! we purchased lobsters, clams, king crab, fries and she crab soup... everything was steamed for us! we byob-ed (or you could run across the street to the brew through) and chowed down on the picnic tables out front. they were super sweet and provided cocktail sauce, napkins, crackers, mallets, etc. the lobster was unbelievable, king crab and clams were good but I would skip the fries (crinkle cut) and she crab soup (really creamy, kinda sour?). next time we're going to get more lobster and try a dozen local crabs.... can't wait!!!! read more

CRAPPY service, OK food. We've been going to Nags Head for vacation for the past several summers and have gotten carry-out from Austin's a few times. The food is OK, not great. I've ordered the oyster sandwich, fish sandwich, clam chowder, fried clams, and shrimp. The fried food was a bit greasy and the sides (mac n' cheese, hush puppies, and fries) were very mediocre. I would say all of it was average in quality and price. The best thing we tried was the NE clam chowder, which had good flavour but was stingy on the clams. My biggest beef is the service, or LACK of it. We went yesterday to pick up some chowder at 3:30pm. A grumpy lady said they just put it away in the fridge and she had to get it out again. (Really? Already packed up at 3:30pm? )While we waited, the older lady at the register demanded we pay immediately. It took 25 minutes for the first lady to pkg a quart of cold clam chowder and nothing else! I also saw another employee give a snarky reply to the man next to me who asked if their shrimp was fresh-caught. I asked the older lady until what time do they take orders for fried platters for carry-out the next day. She said 4pm. So today I called to order at 3:30pm and she said they were backed up and weren't taking orders anymore. I recalled what she told me yesterday. No apologies. Didn't give a hey. We've been served by the same older lady at the register before. Same rude, "pay-now-and-get-out" attitude. My advice: Go elsewhere for better food and decent service at the least. Stopped here for takeout lunch after a failed attempt at fishing. Seafood was super fresh and great quality at a reasonable price. The sides were okay but nothing special. THis place is made for the tourists, and shuts up tighter than Fort Knox as soon as tourist season is over. They're overpriced, and the quality is poor. Take a local's advice and ask local where to get good, fresh seafood. Austin's ain't it. read more

The owners of this place are so rude! The old woman is as cranky and sour as she can be. We went in last year, bought some seafood to make a boil at home and just thought maybe she was having a bad day. This year we did the same, only she was actually worse; then the old man came in from the back and scowled at us. We hadn't said anything or done anything to offend anyone, we were just waiting to pay for our seafood. My hubs and I held it together until we got outside and just starting laughing. We both thought they were like the soup Nazis from Seinfeld. He bought one of their hats so we could have a laugh when we look at it and remember our experiences with the seafood Nazis. Bottom line, fresh seafood was nothing spectacular, the place is small and it is a stretch to call it quaint. Most importantly, you just can't be rude to people. I don't care if you are old. My husband and I LOVE seafood, especially when we can customize our plate. We were camping at the beach and our vacation would not thave been complete without a seafood dinner. We stopped at this place on a whim and I'm glad we did! The market is crowded (lots of things to buy!) but I felt like it was clean. The lady behind the fish counter was patient with me and did not make me feel rushed, even though it was busy. We bought cod, mahi mahi, scallops, shrimp, and crab legs. YUM YUM YUM! We didn't even seaon our purcahse with anything (though I am sure seasoning on it would taste fine.) It tasted pretty fresh to me! Yes, you will spend more money here, but our total was probably not even half of what it would have been, had we gone to a seafood restaurant and ordered the same things we bought. Pricey for one meal, but worth every penny, and every bite! The other reviews about the lady at the register seemed true, she was less than social, but oh well.
