Several things in life are at the bottom of my to-do list and will NEVER be seen on any of my bucket list's. They are: (1) Going to a car dealership to purchase a car (2) Buying a mattress set Today's focus will be mattress buying. Why do I have such a non-warming passion for the two aforementioned? Simply and honestly, I hate pressure sales, I hate being followed and being asked, "wadda ya think?" "wanna take her for a spin?" Take who for a spin? Sure, let me man handle this queen size double wide mattress out to the overstuffed parking lot and see how 'she' spins. I hate NOT seeing prices online. I hate not being able to just walk in and pick something off the shelf. I hate it, I hate it, it just makes me want to scream and gives me indigestion hours before I even leave the house. It's like one of those things where you eat the jelly doughnut, have jelly all over your face, you're asked if you ate the jelly doughnut and you say, no. They gottcha! This past Saturday I had to throw myself into this sea of snake oil witchery and buy a bed. It was simply that time. What made this game more difficult to play is, I am new to Austin AND, there appears to be more mattress stores here in Austin than there are red lights here. In fact, I think there are more mattress stores here than there are Dunkin' Donuts shops in Malden MA. Trust me, I've lived there and there is a Dunkin' Donut on every corner in Malden. I chose Urban Mattress as my first show. I was convinced of what it was going to be like and I was not happy, many minutes before I walked in. I was un-happier when I had to call and ask what part of the shopping center they were in and what was near them. At the end of the conversation, I asked who I was speaking with and he identified himself as Shannon. I always try to ask and I also told him who I was. DUMB! Now, regardless if I show up or not, some guy named Shannon I'm sure of, will be scouring a parking lot looking for someone he knows nothing about but wants to find his store. Maybe I won't go. Nah, I have to go, I ate the jelly donut. When I walked in, I gave the place the 1 second once-over. I saw that it was void of other customers, it had a lunch aroma, and I heard, "Hi Robert", yelled Shannon from across the room. I was screwed. He saw the jelly on my face. Shannon was at the counter with Lauren, the store manager. They both were eating their lunch and Lauren offered hers to me. I took one look, noticed it was like 98% gone, and said, Nah, you finish it. Reality, it looked un-touched and actually looked very good. I still passed. After some informal chit chat, we got down to business. I'll make this part brief and painless, somewhat like what Lauren had me experience. My stay there was far from brief, and it was THE MOST PAINLESS and THE MOST ENJOYABLE mattress buying adventure I had experienced. I was educated on many different options. I was given plenty of time and Lauren certainly DID NOT pressure me. I was VERY comfortable making a decision and making a purchase. Let's face it. With a mattress store on every corner, every mattress store HAS to have a gimmick to survive. The gimmick here was, there was none to be found or felt. The focus is to make the customer comfortable and to educate them. And I experienced both. Because of that, they have me as a customer. Marketing a product or yourself successfully is how well you can convey that within 15 seconds or less to your audience. With Shannon taking a stab at calling out my name when I first walked in, and Lauren offering me her lunch, the sincerity aura was very noticeable. Will I go back? In a heart- beat. Will I recommend? in a second. When it feels that the people that you are talking to really, really want you to learn, enjoy, and make a conscience decision, it's always the right feeling to act on. read more

This review is a long time coming. We moved to Austin in the summer of 2015, and found ourselves in a real pickle! Our moving company had sent our shipment to Connecticut! When the truck showed up at our door and we realized what had happened, we didn't have any option but to wait for the truck to drive our belongings back to our new address in Austin. My husband stopped by Urban Mattress at the 4001 Lamar location, and asked Shane if there was any way he could get us a bed that same day. Shane called his warehouse and made it work. We had a bed to sleep in that night. It made living in an empty house a little easier. A couple of months later, we purchased a new bed frame, and realized the foundation we had purchased didn't fit. Shopping for a mattress can be such a pain and so many "sales" folks out there just trying to get you to buy the most expensive one. I cannot tell you how refreshing it was to walk into Urban Mattress and meet Shane. Talk about a genuine guy, who's main focus is to be sure you purchase the right mattress for YOU. Not for his bottom line. He took the time to find out what I was looking for and what my wife and I needed most in a mattress. Once he had an idea of what I liked/needed, he began showing me the different mattresses and explaining the benefits of each. Shane never rushed me or pressured me into anything. As a matter of fact, he guided me through the entire process very professionally and made sure I was totally satisfied. I went to one of the big box mattress companies a few years back and had a totally different experience and it was not good at all. I cannot recommend Shane enough. I finally took the plunge and bought myself a new mattress. I went in during the week, and had the whole place to myself. The manager took time to find out what kind of mattress I usually like- and then he suggested ones accordingly. He wasn't pushy at all, let me take my time trying them out. I ended up purchasing a mattress that day. One of the great things about this place besides the fact that they are locally owned, is that they donate 2% of what you pay to charity. You even get to pick the charity from a couple choices. My mattress was delivered two days later, the delivery guys were fast and super nice. At typical big chain mattress stores, the staff is like vultures the minute you walk in and try to up-sell everything. Also, their mattresses are WAY over priced. Urban Mattress has low-key sales and lets you look around on your own while answering any questions. I got my new mattress within an hour with their delivery service called Burro. I knew I really needed a new mattress, but was not keen on Mattress Firm and other stores like that. I shop at Central Market, so I stopped at Urban Mattress to try out their mattresses. I was very impressed with their products and the guidance provided by Krystalle and Shawn. I narrowed it down to one mattress, and for the next three times I went to Central Market I went back to Urban Mattress and laid down on the mattress so I was sure it was the right one. It was delivered last week. The morning after I first slept on it, I didn't have shoulder or leg pain, which I'd had for years on waking! Urban Mattress has been a top notch experience from start to finish. Most importantly, they were the first mattress store I visited where I felt like the staff was not pushy or focused on making a sale as quickly as possible and getting me out the door. I left the store without making a purchase the first time and wasn't subjected to a salesperson trying to hook me back around the neck, frantically ask, "Is there any reason you wouldn't buy from us?" or threaten that I'm about to miss out on a promotion or sale. That was a HUGE factor in making me desire to do business with them. Isaac and Shane were - hands down - the most knowledgeable salespeople I have spoken to out of nearly a dozen mattress stores that I visited throughout Austin. I should know. I've quizzed all of them mercilessly. As for price, I spent three months shopping around - even compared mattresses at Costco and Sam's Club! The owner truly seems to have a heart for the work that they're doing. Last but not least, the delivery crew was absolutely precious. The crew was very respectful, cautious, and when my bed turned out to be ridiculously tall (I got a pillow-top) they suggested a thinner boxspring and came back and switched it out for free! We visited Urban Mattress this past weekend. We had recently bought a mattress online, and it ended up being such a terrible fit for me that I'd begun sleeping on a futon in my son's playroom instead of the master bedroom. We went to Urban Mattress hoping to choose a new mattress fairly quickly -- although we brought along our almost-three-year-old son, so it was unclear how that was going to work out. We had a great experience working with Isaac, and it was definitely one of the most kid-friendly shopping experiences we've had for a boring adult product. Isaac had several age-appropriate books that he gave to our son without any prompting; we didn't hear a word from our son for at least 20 minutes after that. Isaac talked us through our options and didn't rush us. He gave us pillows to use while testing out the mattresses. He advised us to compare just two mattresses at a time, then compare the "winner" with another mattress. When we explained that we wanted to get the mattress as soon as possible so that I could resume sleeping in the master bedroom, he arranged for it to be delivered within a few hours. The delivery men called ahead of time to let us know they were coming; arrived at the promised time; and were quick, courteous, and considerate. In the end, I couldn't get past the marketing hype and decided to go the traditional route. I'm glad we decided to shop locally. There was no pressure to spend more than our budget, and we were thrilled that Urban Mattress could take our old mattress away and donate it to charity. He had me try and re-try several mattresses and told me the differences between the different types. He encouraged me to lie on each mattress for a good amount of time to help make the right decision.
