On returning to this establishment, I am more in love with meat pies than before.

We really enjoy the meat pies here for lunch do we thought we'd try breakfast. We won't be back for breakfast. I had the spinach, egg, and feta pie. It had a strange flavor and I think it had onions which I don't like. It was edible but not something I will ever order again. My husband had the scrambled egg platter. It was okay. Ugh. Worst service ever. Don't go if you have any dietary restrictions at all. I have a dairy allergy and apparently everything in the restaurant has dairy. It's all cooked to order but they even refused to cook the eggs without butter. I walked out with a plain bagel.. and wouldn't have even gotten that if it weren't for my husband and child who needed to eat. I've been wanting to try this place for quite sometime, so for an afternoon snack I decided to drop by and get something to go. Well the shop is interesting and has lots of things to check out, but I was more interested in food. I wasn't quite sure where to place my order so I walked around to the register, other places you can order at the bakery case... They need signs on where to place an order or someone should actually greet you when you come in... Anyway I'd checked out the menu outside so I knew what I wanted... the spinach triangle or "spanikopita". I also had a few questions but the guy at the register seem put out that he had to answer them, but it was my first time there, just wasn't made to feel comfortable by this cashier. So I ordered the spinach triangle, checked to make sure it was vegetarian and waited for it to be heated. Now for anything that's served in a crust of anysort at a bakery... I expect it to be crispy... I was wrong it was soft almost mushy and I do not like mushy foods. Also the spinach was not a brillant green but a dull collard green color... I had to double check that it was spinach. And to serve it in a paper bag, it was just too soft to hold with one hand if that was the plan. We finally had a chance to visit the bakery today. And we were NOT disappointed. .. Let me start with all of the smiling faces that are eager to greet you as you walk in. Everyone is very welcoming and friendly. We ordered the curried lamb, the sausage roll and the chicken (large flaky dough). The curried lamb: EXCELLENT!!!! Very flavorful, nice texture. As you can see with the picture. The chicken: very good and flaky. There is ample filling. The crust is a bit over flaky but is manageable with a fork. I'm not able to tell you what I think about the sausage as I didn't get it with the to go package (Reason for four stars). read more

Good place to stop in for breakfast. I can't speak to the authenticity of the Australian food but the sausage egg and cheese in a wrap was great! Had a little peppery kick to it and for $5.04 vey worth the price. My wife and I split one and it was enough to help us start the day. The meat pies are AMAZING. Ordered three to split with a friend: lamb curry, shepherds pie, and the aussie meat pie. all three were amazing, although it may have been meat pie overload. the coffee was YUM. and i always appreciate good coffee. hope i can stop by again soon for the other pies :) read more

While generally not a fan of fried fish, the sampling of their fish 'n chips on a food tour, piqued my interest to come back. Not greasy, light -- the fish was pretty darned good. This time T. and I ordered meat pies. He chose lamb curry, I picked buffalo chicken. The consensus: mine was better! Plenty of chicken, a nice zingy sauce, flaky pastry -- it was good. Perhaps it was an off day, but the lamb pie didn't have much lamb. The curry was very good, but the pastry pocket needed more meat. Saturday late morning, the place is hopping. Plenty of patrons. A little bit of a wait. Snag a table when you see one. There are plenty of things on the menu -- I'm gonna try something different next time -- and I heard their homemade bread, sold by the loaf, is very good and well-priced. read more

The food: The pies are great! I recommend buying two if you're someone who likes to eat. I had the Ned Kelly and the original. They were both good. Very hot!! The restaurant: This place is like part restaurant, part Austrailian museum, and part gift shop lol. There's all kinds of things to explore in this place! This place is incredible! This is a hidden Gem in Marietta! The staff is friendly and the owner is extremely friendly. When you go you have to get the Ned Kelly pie and potatoes! The Ned Kelly pie is so good! The potatoes are perfectly seasoned and crispy. The baked goods are also incredible, I went today and tried the Vanilla Slice and the Lamington. This place serves little pockets of love and comfort. I adore this restaurant & wish I lived closer as I would visit all the time. It is adorable and homey inside with plenty of seating and fun items to browse (plenty of interesting dry goods and snacks). Loved all the bluegrass references (yes to Scruggs!) The veggie pocket was delish and I bet the meat ones are just as good. It was large enough for a meal (with a salad) and tasted moist and homemade. The staff were very sweet and it seemed like a pretty awesome community. One piece of advice (not that you asked) is to change the dressing- I LOVED how the menu boasted all natural and wholesome and then I got my vinaigrette and it had high fructose in it. I've started with the Meat pie and the Steak and Kidney pie, and I find them to be delicious. These are high quality pies, and it shows in the pastry shell; texture is perfect. They were delivered to me from Georgia to Texas in two days, and arrived without problems. These pies are not cheap, but treat yourself! read more

I stumbled upon this place this morning during a quick work trip to Atlanta. Truly a unique place to have breakfast. There were so many delicious looking options I could have eaten everything! If you like a European type cafe in the US, this is it! I had the egg scramble with one of their croissants which melted in my mouth! They also have a little grocery section with items from the UK and Australia. The staff was also super friendly and helpful. I need to plan another trip to Marietta just to eat here. read more

Super disappointed. Having spent time in Australia and having my first authentic meat pie in Melbourne, I was super excited to try this establishment out. I stumbled across Marietta Square on my way to an event and I decided to add it to my list of places to try within the week. On my way I decided to call to check for availability of menu items I wanted to try as well as their closing hours, as I hate to keep staff behind. They were very gracious on the phone, everyone seems very kind. I asked for the chicken and vegetable pie; one to eat there and one for the road in case I really liked it. Boy was I wrong. I think Marie Callender makes a better meat pie. It was very stale I think I remember two or three small pieces of chicken and the vegetables reminded me of canned peas and carrots that maybe they cooked up in a pot. It was all very underwhelming nothing authentic about it in my personal opinion as well as experience. I simply cannot suggest anyone try this place having been to Australia and I consuming an authentic meat pie made from scratch and brought to you fresh to death and delicious! Nothing can even come close to calling itself a meat pie here. Will not return but I wish them well. One star for the hospitality, although a bit meager. read more

Was looking for a nice bakery on the square and Australian Bakery Cafe was highly recommended online. When we went in we saw a nice selection of baked goods and a wall full of Australian candies and groceries. The owner saw us looking at Vegemite and asked if we had ever tried it before. After saying we hadn't he offered us some for free on a piece of bread (but to be honest I don't think I'll be trying Vegemite again). We ended up getting the Hedgehog and Pavlova items, both of which were delicious. We spent some more time talking to the owner who was extremely helpful and nice. Fun visit, good selection! I'm giving a 2 because of the overuse of plastic and no mugs for dine in customer's. Even my coffee and husbands hot cup of tea was served in paper and its not recyclable. Tea is shocking in paper or plastic. My food was on plastic and found it very disappointing. I did ask for a proper cup but not. They have an unique concept. But I didn't find anything special about the meat pies. Just like the name implies, they are an Australian Bakery. Their claim to fame are their meat pies. It's just ground beef and gravy in puff pastry. I found the gravy too salty. The puff pastry tasted okay. And they're small. You should get 2 to fill you up. One is not going to satisfy you unless you have a small stomach. They have different variations of the meat pie. But I didn't find them too different from their original meat pie. The Ned Kelly pie had an egg on it. But the egg didn't make the pie taste awesome. It just tasted like an open faced original meat pie with a baked egg on top of it. I think it's worth it to try this place out once. It does have an interesting atmosphere. But I wouldn't be a regular. read more

I'm Australian. I can tell you that all the meat pies they sell here are pretty much what it tastes like in Australia. I usually order the plain meat pie and I usually buy frozen snags (sausages) bulk here amd party pies when I have barbies at my house. They also secretly sell Dim Sims here too, which is sold in every take away shop in australia... i wouldnt even know how to explain one to you lol, just have a go and taste one.. I like them.. lol The variety of groceries is good too, I mostly buy the canned passion fruit coz i bake a lot of pavlova at home and this is the only place I can find them. The sausage rolls and pies are fantastic...they are exactly what you would get at a local footy game in australia. We have been visiting this bakery for the past 5 years whenever we are in Marietta, our experiences have always been absolutely stellar, we always had fish and chips and have purchased approximately $80 in various pies which had always been very authentic. We have brought family to enjoy this cafe also.....until today. We ordered fish & chips as usual, my husband had 2 pieces of fish with chips, I had 1 piece with chips, almost IMMEDIATELY we became aware something was amiss.....and it was, the chips had obviously been 'double' fried (part fried, left and fried again when needed) and the fish was clearly not cod or anything remotely resembling cod....it was small, super thin and quite frankly, mushy. We asked to speak to the manager who spent about 4 minutes informing us that we were incorrect....they have not changed anything over the past 5 years....arguing with such a character is really not worthwhile - we are British and clearly know good fish & chips from junk. This was junk. He offered no explanation other than perhaps his 'workers' had somehow done something different with the batter and he stated that most folk who frequent the cafe are not British or Australian and therefore know no difference! Giving him the benefit of the doubt we told him we would still purchase the bakery items as we always have. We did....mistake #2, the pies are filled with - well, filler and some kind of mystery meat. Obviously quality control is no longer a prerequisite. Whatever has transpired here in the past year or so is pretty sad and therefore my recommendation is....I don't recommend it. Sadly, our 'go to' bakery has up & left for parts unknown. read more

I've been coming to the Square pretty much my entire life and for some reason or another, even though visiting Eddie's Trick Shop a few paces away had never eaten here. I'd noticed it a few times and even gone in and took a look round but it took my friend Dan down from Wisconsin to get me to visit. We wandered through the door and were immediately greeted with all stuff Aussie - from the flags hanging overhead to koalas and kangaroos, and display cases packed with delicious-looking baked goodies. However, it was the smell of the meat pies that hung in the air and the "G'day" greeting which really welcomed us. We got in and got to meet cheery Neville, the Aussie owner and he served us up the lunch special, which were the excellent steak-and-onion meat pies and a salad. He was a great host as well, even taking time to explain the flag for the Eureka Stockade, which was the one flag hanging overhead we didn't recognize. The food was served piping hot and fresh and the salad was excellent as well - nice crispy greens and sliced tomato. Bit simple but it was exactly what we needed. The pies were fantastic and well-flavored, and when combined with the excellent service and great little location it makes for a place I'll happily visit again and again. Can't wait to try the lamb pie! If you're in the area and don't want some tired old chain restaurant, be sure to get in and try something new. You won't regret it! read more

AN AUSSIE BAKERY? NO WAY! YES WAY! When you say pie, I say okay. When we noticed this Australian Bakery, we were immediately interested in checking it out. They have a vast selection of meat and veggie pies along with various desserts. We decided to check out a couple of the meat pies, the shephard pie and the traditional meat pie. Although I assumed that these pies would have a heavy crust, I was surprised because they were actually lighter than expected and the perfect vehicle for the meat. They were a balanced bite. The problem with these pies is that they are just way too salty for me and I prefer my savory pie with a good supply of veggies. It's just not my thing. On the other hand, Mr. High blood pressure loved them -salt, meat and bread. He was in heaven! Perhaps next time, I will try a dessert option. Remember, this store also carries packaged foods and snacks so there are several options for trying something new or different. This store was seemed very popular with the locals as the staff interacted with the customers and addressed them by name. The store was pretty busy during the lunch hour but everything still flowed smoothly. Next time you're in the area, give it a try! read more

I wanted to like this place, I really did. I haven't had a pie since living in OZ 12 years ago. These are a terrible example of a British/Aussie/New Zealand staple. Low rent crust encasing low rent filling. Believe me, Americans, these don't come close to a good pie. I agree with one of the previous reviewers, that these look & taste like they are a couple of days old. Their desserts were just as old & tired looking. I tried their small pavlova, & it had "cool whip" on it, instead of whipped cream! Yes, I know that cool whip will last for a good week in the dessert case window, but come on! What Aussie would use cool whip(for anything). Their iced coffees were the weakest drink I have ever had. Think Denny's coffee, watered down by a factor of 4. Yuk. Again, nothing like what you will get back in OZ or NZ. Such a shame. How these people get return customers is a complete mystery to me. I will never go there again, nor could I recommend it to an expat, even a desperate one. I'm from New Zealand & my wife is Australian. She was equally grossed out & unamused. Aww! Roos! Koalas! The Australian Bakery Cafe has been around for 7 or so years, and I finally got to have my first taste. Now, mind you, it was at 9 AM on a Sunday morning. So I didn't get to sample any of those famous meat pies, but I did get to experience the Aussies, at the very least, in a breakfast setting. I had a neat square of a quiche-ish spinach and feta pie. You will find: an inflated Qantas Airlines little plane hovering above your head, giant kangeroo crossing mural on the wall, stuffed koala backpacks to sell, meat pies and free wi-fi. This is my first time trying the Australian Bakery. The cashier and other workers were courteous. The food was reasonably priced. Each pie was sizeable and about $5 each. I got the BBQ pie and the Cajun. The BBQ wasn't good. The sauce tasted like ketchup. There wasnt much meat, but the meat that was there didn't taste like it was seasoned. I couldn't finish the whole thing. I ended up picking off pieces of puff pastry from the outside of the pie, trying to avoid the BBQ sauce. The Cajun pie was good. It was spicy and tasted as expected. I didn't know that heating the pies was a process and spent about 10 min waiting for my pies to be heated. If I were too go back, I would just get a regular meat pie, but I doubt I'll be back. read more

Let me start by saying that I never MEANT to watch Anthony Bourdain's visit to Sydney, and the delicious meat pies he ate while traveling, but I DID, and now I have to tell you ALL about the hot and ready meat pie I ordered in Marietta at the Australian Bakery Cafe. Phew. I'm glad I got that out there. I stopped by this cafe, which is very familiar to me. I used to spend a lot of time in "the square", and needed to make a stop at Eddie's Trick Shop, next door, for some wig shopping. I found nothing but a rumble in my stomach and a mighty need to correct this. This bakery is unique, and carries popular food items from foreign countries such as India and South Africa. I know I eyed the chutney while devouring my meat pie and receiving glances from the staff like, "You like that?" Honest to Maude, I didn't know what a meat pie really is, unless you count Chicken Pot Pie. But no, this particular item is an Australian tradition! I ordered One Meat Pie, knowing just these quick and fast details: Did you know? Australians are the world's largest consumers of meat pies per capita, with each person on average consuming over 12 meat pies and a further 17 combined pastries, sausage rolls, and party pies per annum. And it came to me, literally. A meat pie with a filling of ground beef, potato, and flaky filo crust with sharp cheddar cheese atop. Plus a side item, all for me. I was a little embarrassed to be eating a meat pie for breakfast, alone in a restaurant. But after a stressful morning of wig shopping, what's a girl like me to do? Yelp about it! read more

In search of the Travel Channel Food shows. number 2. What a great little town. I almost didn't get my wife to the restaurant because she wanted to go into all the little stores along the way. But I was hungry. As I walked in, I muttered to her, "the meat pies, the meat pies, the meat pies, it's their specialty." The display is right in front of you as you walk to the counter. The guy behind the counter says, "what'll you have?" My wife says, "I'll have the Turkey Sandwich". The Turkey Sandwich???? She says it was pretty good. Sigh. I had two of the meat pies....The Aussie Meat Pie and the Ned Kelly. no fries, just a soda. These were great. The owner came by and we had an over 5 minute chat. Not just one of those "hey, how are you doing. thanks for stopping by", but a little history of the place, talked about the German football team winning the World Cup and "what the heck are the rules in Australian football. (i've watched it about 15 times and I still don't understand the rules completely. It's reminds me of a game you'd get when a whole bunch of completely drunk guys got together and decided to make up their own game. Anyway, the pies are great. I'm going to order some and have them shipped to Tampa. Heading back up to Nashville in a month. will definitely stop by. read more

While walking the Marietta Square, I was curious about what constituted an "Australian" bakery. There were several folks eating inside, and it sweet aroma coming out of the door was quite an invitation. During our first visit, we checked out the baked goods case - lots of meat pies and interesting desserts. We bought a 5-pack of the Anzac cookies and a piece of sheet cake coated in chocolate and coconut (I can't recall the name). The cookies were AMAZING. The cake was quite good too, but we loved the cookies. Since our cookie experience was so great, we decided to go back a couple of days later for lunch. Again, the place was bustling. I ordered a meat pie with cheese and an egg. Again, I can't recall the name but it was named after someone. The picture and description in the menu didn't match what I received. :-( I assume that these guys are making incredible, flaky pastry crust in the back all day. Then they whip up some delectable meat pies in what I assume is true Australian fashion. But, when you take something so tender, flaky, and perfect and nuke it in the microwave before serving, it makes for a flat, boring, disappointing crust. The egg on top was not freshly cracked - it would have been from whenever the pie was made and was cooked hard through. The microwave didn't do it any favors either. I had a combo with a side of French onion soup. The soup probably wasn't microwaved long enough as it wasn't hot enough to melt the slice of cheese that topped it. I'd love for these guys to take the microwaves out of their restaurant - get some toaster ovens or those convection dealios like at Starbucks and Subway. You can't expect something so potentially perfect to be that way after you nuke it. I bet they are soooooo good when they are fresh from the oven. We had to take another 5-pack of cookies with us. Yum yum! 5 stars for the friendly folks and the cookies. 0 stars for the meat pie. read more

I've been looking for a place that sells meat pies, and I ended up walking in here when I was walking around in Marietta Square one day. The place appears to be mainly run by an Australian, who is very congenial and helpful (not to mention the awesome accent). I ordered the Lamb curry for my first one, and ended up ordering 4 more to go:) I make sure I stop by this place whenever I drive by the area, and if you like meat pies, or 'pasties', (or anything of a commonwealth origin) then give this place a try.
