For almost 50 years, I've doubted most recommendations I've gotten from mechanics. I often feel like they are just out to pad my bill, not fix my car correctly and according to me needs! That will never happen again, now that I have been to Auto Authority! Tony at Auto Authority explains EVERYTHING with amazing detail, not only about what is wrong, but why it is significant! Then, he and his staff do the job right. Every time. I needed tires and Tony explained how cheap tire shops have a goal of getting your tires installed as quickly and cheaply as possible. But by paying his crew an additional 0.1 hours of labor, I know the tires and rims are well cleaned and completely ready for the tire installation. I also took my son's car to Auto Authority shortly after we bought it in 2020. It's a 2006 Acura. After looking at it, Tony called and spent 40 minutes telling me what he found and the significance of each repair. I want this car to last until my son graduates college, and with it under the watchful eye of Tony and Auto Authority, I have no doubt we will get there! Where to even start...Tony and his mechanics worked on my Volkswagen's complicated timing chain belt tensioner. This was a known problem with Volkswagen and Audi. Needless to say they worked on it all summer, which I was fine with given the fact that it is complicated and obviously wanted the work to be done correctly so that this was no longer a problem. Here is the part that I want to fully disclose to people. Volkswagen had finally come to a settlement with this issue. However, in order to show proof that I dropped thousands of dollars to fix this issue you have to show receipts. I received in the mail a letter documenting my car as one of the vehicles effected back in 2018. At the time I could not find the old receipts, but assumed that Tony kept all documents. After calling Tony once a month up until the deadline of January 25th, 2019. Tony had every excuse in the book to not give me the receipt. For example: they didn't have internet, the computers were no longer working, he couldn't get into his old computer, I even showed up there and he said nothing was working. Than he finally told me he had sent it to Volkswagen, which is odd in itself because the settlement company is the one who needs the documents, as well as, my personal information in order to send me a percentage of the money I spent on the repairs. Therefore, I missed the deadline to send anything to the settlement company. Tony would not give me the receipt by lying to me and than he finally told me he sent them to me in the mail, which is interesting because I never received them (the story doesn't add up). This is very disappointing being that Tony knew how much money and even my own time of dropping my car off all summer to get worked on. To shed some light this repair cost me over $6,500 and Tony knew this. It sickens me to think that someone would be that dishonest and cheat me out of money that I should've received since I paid for the repairs. read more

I took my vehicle to this shop twice to have my air conditioner repaired. Auto Authority was highly recommended to me by a friend with a similar make and model vehicle. During my first visit in 2012, the AC hoses/lines were replaced by Auto Authority. In addition, Auto Authority indicated that my condenser may have a slow leak. Due to the cost involved, the shop recommended I recharge the R134a as needed rather than replace the condenser. Fast forward one year. The air conditioning system again stopped working so we returned Auto Authority. It was easy to schedule an appointment online, and Tony, the owner, replied promptly and politely. On both occasions, I was always able to get my car in the next day, and heard back right away regarding a diagnosis and estimate. However, when I returned in 2013 for work on the air conditioning system, I received an estimate that included unnecessary and expensive work on my vehicle. Specifically, I was told that the AC compressor and condenser needed to be replaced since the vehicle was "spewing refrigerant." I was verbally quoted an estimate of approximately $1,500 for parts and labor. I was very taken aback upon hearing how much this work would cost. Since my vehicle was about 10 years old, I asked if there was any way to save money and/or if all these repairs were vital. I was told that these repairs were necessary if I wanted the AC working again. I was further told that different brand parts could be used, which would save me about $100.00. I asked for a written estimate. Due to the magnitude of the estimate, I discussed the matter with my husband. Several items on the estimate sent up "red flags." I called the owner back and told him not to make the repairs. I also told him that my husband would drop by to pay the bill for the diagnostic work and pick up the keys. Upon his arrival, my husband questioned the owner on the aforementioned "red flags." First, the written estimate for labor costs listed my engine size as 3.5L. My actual engine size is 2.7L. The owner explained that they have a VIN reader that scans the VIN to determine the engine size. Labor costs are related to engine size apparently due to the additional time needed to complete the repair. My husband explained to him that the engine was in fact 2.7L. To confirm, they popped the hood and read the manufacturer sticker. Sure enough, the manufacturer label indicated that the engine size was 2.7L. Here is the kicker... once the owner saw this, he stated that the VIN reader must be malfunctioning and took my husband into the office to show him the VIN readout on their software system. The software system conveniently had a "pull-down" menu that allowed one to manually select the engine size. The software system was set (yep you guessed it) to a 3.5L engine size. The owner then changed the engine size (via the "pull-down" menu) and selected the 2.7L engine size. Voilà! The labor estimate magically dropped by about $400.00 dollars. The owner said the machine had made a mistake and apologized, and credited our bill for $45.00. My husband also questioned why the condenser needed to be replaced and why the system couldn't instead be recharged. The owner stated that he "has a responsibility to the environment" and that spewing refrigerant was hazardous. My husband asked why it was hazardous in 2013 versus when we first had the initial work done in 2012. Had I been there, I could have added that I actually care quite a bit about the environment. Although this was the first I heard this was the reason behind the condenser repair, the refrigerant used today (R134a) is not nearly as bad R12, which was phased out in the 1990's due to its damage to the ozone layer. My vehicle uses CFC free R-134a, as do all modern vehicles, and the ozone layer is slowing regaining its structure as a result. But I digress... A couple days later, my husband took my vehicle to another shop in the area that had previously done work on his brother's vehicle. That shop replaced the compressor and informed us that they saw nothing leaking from the condenser. The bill, including diagnostics, was a little under $500.00. To date, my vehicle's AC continues to work well without any R134a recharges. As an aside, I checked the bill from my initial visit to Auto Authority in 2012 when I had the AC hoses/lines replaced. And guess what.... my engine size was again listed at 3.5L. Caveat emptor. read more
