This was the worst experience I have ever experienced with an auto repair shop. I took my car to the shop to get brakes and rotors put on the car. I was told they would do a diagnostic test on the car (never did one). I asked the mechanic not to do any work on the car without giving me the price. The mechanic texted me and stated the price would be $541( and I still have the text) well a little later he calls back after he starting working on the car and states I need another part for the car so know the price will be $752( I still have the text) I'm thinking wow I really don't have a lot of money so I call him and I say are you sure it's going to be $752 because I don't have anymore money to put into the car for a brake job, he states yes at this time if he wasn't sure he should have done the diagnostic test that he never done. Then he calls me back for a 3rd time and states we are still having problems with your car someone poured the wrong fluid in your brakes (which I have never had anything done with the brake) and now all the parts are swollen and it's going to be $1900 I told him don't do anymore work on the car stop right there. I asked why didn't you do the diagnostic test you said you was going to do he was like well I didn't charge you for the test. I was thinking if he would have done the diagnostic test in the first place I would've saved money because if it would have been that much I would've waited. So I just spent $752 dollars on a car for brakes and rotors that is still broken. I had to get my car towed to another shop. Be careful with this place! read more

I took my car to Auto Spec on 4/4/22 for a diagnostic on my AC which was not blowing cold air. After a few hours Mike called me and let me know that the ac pressure was too high and they were not able to diagnose the issue but it may have been caused by a bad AC recharge job. I am a single owner for the car, and there has never been AC recharge work done on it. He also mentioned that they added refrigerant and the car was blowing air which was $240 in addition to the cost for diagnosis. When I went to pick up my car, I asked a simple question "Is it normal for you to perform over $240 worth of work without informing the customer?". I never got a response to the actual question, but instead Mike used classic gaslighting and blamed me for insinuating that I was accusing them of stealing and therefore, insulting him. He then threatened to remove the refrigerant if I didn't want to pay. All this while, I never said I didn't want to pay, but just asked the above question. Now I was in the middle of a work day and needed to leave quickly and it didn't seem like it was rational to let them do more work on the car or have more conversation with him and therefore, I thought it was best to pay up and take my car out of there. He then mentioned that he was he was being a good guy. This is because although they were not able to diagnose the issue, they are almost sure it is a condenser leak and the new refrigerant would help diagnose the issue if it happens again and they didn't assume it was a costly repair like a condenser replacement. Ideally, after not being able to diagnose the issue with the AC a "good guy" have informed me about their inability and asked me if they could add refrigerant to help diagnosis in the future if the issue happens again. And a "better guy" would have accurately diagnosed the ac issue. read more

Shopped all around round rock and had bad to not so great experiences with local shops UNTIL someone recommended auto spec. I have had complex issues with both of my vehicles (lucky me) and get a few opinions before making the decision when it comes to pricy or unable to replicate issue fixes. Ray and Mike always give me an honest opinion and a range of ideas on what the issues could be along with estimates. They were able to correctly guess on what the issue was with my Kia sorrento since the issue I was having only occurred 1-2x per month and never replicated in the shop. This fix was 10% the price of the other shops lowest estimated fix. And guess what?! They were right! I haven't had the issue surface since the fix months ago. Now on my 13 year old civic... the car was having super weird starting problems and the issue would happen totally randomly. Again, unable to replicate in shop. Mike took the car for three days and tried his hardest to replicate the issue but the dang car kept starting. He gave me a variety of guesses on what it could be and didnt charge me for the time when I picked it up later. I realized an old shop had warrantied the starter fix while the car was at Auto-Spec so I sent it back to the old shop to get fix. However, I appreciate that Mike didn't charge nor take advantage of the situation when I asked him to give the car a full look over to see if it needed anything. Mike said everything looked great (outside of the starter issue). These people are honest and efficient and affordable and I will be back!! Thanks y'all! read more

Please BEWARE of this shop! In my experience, this shop's business model is to mislead uninformed customers into expensive repairs that are fabrications of what is actually required. I had an engine light code #P219A (go ahead Google search it), their service writer held my vehicle for 12 days, telling me that it needed various valve repairs and they quoted there was a 90% chance it needed a new camshaft - the repair estimate was $6931.98. It wasn't until I researched the actual code did I realize that the $6931.98 had absolutely nothing to do with the actual P219A code. As it was, they held the vehicle hostage until I paid $1311.93. Yes, their free shuttle service is very convenient for Sun City residents but if you have an engine code either take it to an Autozone first - they will identify the engine code(s) for you for free (it's simple). Then research what the code actually is so that you are not ignorant to what is actually required to service your vehicle. Also beware of what they are charging you for parts. One example, they charged me $112.54 for one valve cover gasket. That same gasket sells for $41.99 at Autozone. read more

During the last cold snap this year, my heater core in my Chevy Equinox went out... spewing antifreeze in my floorboards & fogging up my windshield to the point I could barely see to drive. I called about 10 auto shops around the Austin area, and got quotes ranging from $1100 (Auto-Spec) to $2600. It's an INTENSE "fix" -- the dash, steering wheel & front seats had to be removed. A lot of places I called said they wouldn't even take on the job because it was so much work (14+ hours of labor alone!)... but Mike & Ray quickly gave me a quote and offered to set up an appointment to get my car fixed. We've used Auto-Spec in the past and, even though they did quote us the lowest price, were happy to give them our business again. The guys (we worked with Mike the majority of the time) were AMAZING, keeping us updated along the way and even taking pictures to show us how crazy my car looked once they took the seats and dash out! (I mean, who takes time to snap a few pics to show the car owner when they come pick up the car? Pretty cool!) Their original quote of $1100 is basically what we ended up paying (plus $20-something dollars for a new hose that was needed), and I can honestly say that their work was AMAZING! I couldn't tell a bit that my car had been totally taken apart & put back together. We will definitely continue to use Auto-Spec for all of our car repair needs in the future! Cons: - Highly reluctant to order parts online, which often causes delays in acquiring parts. And MAYBE this is the reason for... - Charged me x2 and sometimes x3 price for parts I can get NEW on Ebay with free delivery. - Took my car to Mazda dealer. They jacked the car up and pointed to some items where AutoSpec had clearly skimped on or just left unbolted. Some minor and some serious. - Found a 3-yr persistent vibration was caused by 1 of 4 tires being on backwards in terms of tread direction. AutoSpec had for sure removed that wheel more than once to work on suspension, yet never noticed or said a thing. read more

I had a great recent experience here that I thought was worth sharing. Automotive Specialist is very well known with the local Miata club and I brought my car there for installation and setup of new coilovers, wheels, and tires. Mike was super friendly and patient and helped me get the work quoted and scheduled. All the labor quoted was in-line with my expectations and very reasonable. The day the work finished, I pulled up to the shop in the rain, and my car was out front looking fantastic, but the first thing Mike did was take me over to show me where they had accidentally scratched one of the new wheels. It was minor, and I would not have even noticed until much later (especially in the rain), but Mike was very upfront and insisted that he would pay to buy a replacement wheel and have it put on the car as soon as it came in. I came back a week later with the wheel and a receipt - they were not only good on their word, but I even offered to let them off the hook and pay for the wheel myself, but Mike was insistent and could tell that it would have bothered me otherwise. As for the actual work, Eric did an awesome job, setup the car exactly like I had asked, and I could not be happier with the result! I will be bringing all my cars here from now on. read more

And it certainly was hard-earned...How many hours of spreadsheet building, droning through inane conference calls, and butting heads with obstinate coworkers did you endure just to have some little plastic gee-gaw replaced on your ailing sled? They've got you right where they want you, and, provided that their shockingly high price quote doesn't strike you stone cold dead of a heart attack on the spot, they will get your money. Enter the good mechanic. A good mechanic sees you quickly and treats you fairly. Issues are diagnosed correctly and priced reasonably well. In fact, the repairs often cost less than anticipated. Nobody likes have to ante up for car maintenance, but these guys make the process reasonable, tolerable, and fair. J and C Automotive is one of the good guys. If you can't do it yourself (and I can't), then everyone needs a good mechanic. And when you do find that mechanic, you need to hang on tightly and thank your lucky stars for your good fortune. That's what I'm doing now that I've found MY mechanic. I've had a few annoying issues fixed on my Honda so far. J and C handled everything fantastically, and the bill at the end was extremely palatable. These guys know their business, and they made me feel valued as a customer (and not a walking wallet to be drained). And so, as my aging Accord slouches toward the great scrap heap in the sky, I am comforted to know that I've got a good mechanic to shepherd us through the challenges to come. Today is my second time dealing with this Auto shop. I decided I really like the first visit which left an impression so why not come back. Well, Today was very different. I go in ready to handle business and to my surprise a dog came from the back coming towards me. 1. I'm allergic to pets, and 2. I've had two attacks from dogs in my youth which makes it hard to trust dogs. As the dog is approaching me, I am screaming and shewing at the dog which the dog never responded too. The guys at the shop never gave the dog a command to come to them during the whole time I'm screaming in fear. Well, after Mr. Mike finally gets up to get the dog, but let me add that their was a guy standing closer to get the dog and he never moved not one time. So after Mr. Mike gets the dog he became so angry at me; because, I me screaming and I explained the reason as stated earlier, but he was not hearing that. He told me, "that is not caused for and you didn't have to respond the way I did". I then said, "How can you tell me how to respond? My reaction is my reaction and as a customer who tells them what is the right way to respond"? Mr. Mike was so so angry and wasn't caring at ALL how allergic or afraid I was, that not one time did anyone who was standing their or the shop manager who walked out and just got the dog went back into his office and closed the door and not once did I get an apology. Being a woman, African American woman and disabled who is not just afraid but am on oxygen which Mr. Mike was aware of the first time he meet me and I also mentioned this to him before my visit. I was really disappointed and felt as though because of my fears and being allergic to pets was a really bad thing and it was clear and evident especially from Mr. Mike that I was made to feel this way. It had me so upset that in fact he was making it clear how he felt that I told him never mind and walked out. Myself or the dog did not deserve to be placed in this position by placing a sign on the door to inform customers a dog is present. Not sure why Mr. Mike was so angry and talking at me aggressively as though I did something wrong . Not sure if he just not equipped or have the skills on how to deal or respond to women, African American women, or disabled women for having their reaction to a situation that was not warned by way of visible sign to give the consumer(s) an option to feel welcomed of dealing with this establishment or not. After a few less than stellar experiences with some bigger "dealership alternative" shops, I caught wind of Auto-Spec as being a down-to-earth, informative and straight-shooting place that offers free rides to and from their Round Rock location. It was time for a new timing belt/seals/water pump for my 2010 Subaru Outback and I called three other shops (including the dealership) before calling Auto-Spec. Mike picked up the phone and not only gave me an honest over-the-phone estimate range, but also provided details about some of the potential snags they've come across on other Subarus so I wouldn't be surprised. The price was very competitive. After dropping the car off on a Friday morning, I was shuttled by a super nice gentleman to my office off Parmer, arriving at work by 8:15. Although they quoted a same-day turnaround (barring any complications), they did run into a complication (remember that helpful communication up front?) that required the car to stay overnight. Mike offered to send the shuttle out to take me from my office to my house and to let me potentially pick the car up on Saturday since he was planning on being in the shop. Super accommodating! I wound up having to get the car the next Monday, but since they picked me up at my convenience, it was super easy. You've made an instant loyal customer. read more

After about two weeks of further slashing through insurance-induced red tape, I was finally able to fix the roof. It's a good thing I didn't have a gash there during all this record-setting rainfall. Oh, wait... Moving on... JC AutoSpec is located way-y-y up in Round Rock, but their reputation in Miata circles is sterling, so I inconvenienced myself to make sure the job was done right. And done right it was. With smiles, friendly service, on time and for 25% less than the other place I had considered. When you find something this good, you tell other people about it. I owe these guys a huge debt of gratitude. These guys saved my life in a way they probably don't even know. About two years ago, I was barely scraping by month to month, still paying off a car that was a relic of a previous career. I finally had had it with going from temp job to temp job. After eating through all of my savings, my retirement fund, everything, I decided to sell all of my stuff and drive up to Maryland to stay with my sister and see if I could find a job up there. I couldn't sell the car because I was upside down on the payments. Literally the day before I was going to move, my car broke down (or rather came to halting stop on the I35 access ramp to be precise). I had $450 to my name. There was no way I was going to be able to fix anything that was wrong with it. Fortunately the tow guy recommended JC. It took a couple of days for them diagnose it, but turns out that my rear differential fluid had completely drained out due to a missing cap. It was going to cost a minimum of $2000. Here's where JC goes above and beyond. I kept all of my car maintenance records (in a rather jumbled mess) in my glove compartment. They went through my records and found a statement from Jiffy Lube a few months early saying that I had had my rear differential fluid replaced. They helped me go back and forth with Jiffy Lube and my insurance adjusters until finally Jiffy Lube agreed to come pick up the car and fix it for free. JC never charged me for any of it. In the meantime, I was sleeping on a friend's floor. During those two weeks, I got a call back from a place I had applied to almost a month previously. I had a job. I ended up moving into a great house with people who are now great friends. This whole story could have been very, very different. I really can't thank these guys enough. read more

I was the first one there in the morning and they said they would have it done around noon. I asked if they could do better, and they DID!! It was ready before 11:00 and I was out the door and traveling. It's now a week after I went in and all is still good. Their warranty is exceptional too. I'm trying to not let my nearly $500 bill of car repairs bias my review, although its difficult. The staff did a good job explaining what happened with my vehicle and breaking down the costs. They personally went out of their way to ensure they kept my bill as low as possible and kept the costs to a minimum. They called me to let me know what was happening with the car and prepared me for the good news and the bad news. Next time, give me the bad news first as it was quite a downer (the last time they called telling me it was $140 so far, then called again to drop a bomb on me that it was $450 so far). Ouch! Or give the customer the option, what do you want to hear first, the good news or the bad news? Just a tip. But, overall I still gave them 5-stars because I felt satisfied with their service and know they did a good job on my car. read more

My experience with this shop has been a very mixed bag, VERY mixed bag. My husband went there a few years ago to have our cr-v serviced and thought they did an amazing job. He's not a car guy but he loves good customer service so I kept them bookmarked. When my dad had a fender bender during a visit here we went by there to get a referral to a body shop, which also turned out to have some good and bad employees but they worked out in the end. My real-life yelp friends Katie and Nathan seemed very happy with their experience too so whenever someone asked about a good mechanic up north I would send them here. I think I even sent Susie there, who also had a good experience. Flash forward to this week. I called on Tuesday to see if I could get an appointment to finally get the ac in our subaru fixed. Mr. Man had survived a year without cool air but he'd finally had it. We also needed the brakes looked at. When I called I was told to just bring it in early Wednesday morning. So bright and early Wednesday morning I drove the subaru over there. The guy at the desk told me they were backed up. I said I'd been told to bring it in, that we didn't even necessarily need work done on it right away, we just wanted to know how much it would be to fix. This guy didn't give a shit - just stared blankly at me and said they don't have time they're all backed up. No attempt to help, no suggestions. In fact he discouraged me when I asked about making an appointment. Great. Then another guy who was dealing with another customer turned around and said that he'd spoken to me and told me to bring the car in, that he'd make it happen. YAY! A nice person! So I left the car there and got a ride home from the very nice man who drives the shuttle. I knew there was a shuttle since it's on their website, in reviews, and my husband had used it to get back and forth to work before. About an hour before closing I called to check in on the car and spoke to an incredibly nice person named Mike. My car was being looked into right that very minute. So he called me back and told me the details of what was wrong - the brakes needed to be fixed immediately and the ac needed more freon and they were going to put dye in it to see if there was a more serious problem with the compressor. Money's been very tight with us since we're still working on crawling out of the big vet bills. So we decided to just get the brakes fixed and get the ac fixed with the next paycheck. Mike said ok and that the car would be ready by noon Thursday. I said that was great because I had a doctor's appointment at 3:30. A few minutes later Mike called back to tell me there had been a misunderstanding with the mechanic who had already put the freon in the ac. But he would work it out and give me a generous discount to cover both jobs on the car. I was incredibly surprised and happy with this. Mr. Man and I were both surprised, to the point that we decided I'd take a look at the bill and see how much of a discount it had been and offer to pay a bit extra so the discount wouldn't be too much. Because that's how Mr. Man is and that's how much he thought of their work. Since Mike had assured me several times the car would be ready by noon and I assumed there was a shuttle every day I planned to get ready for my doctor's appointment, take the shuttle, get the car, then drive over to Seton Northwest. Ray called at noon on the dot to tell me the car was ready and I could come pick it up. I asked how much notice I would need to give the shuttle to come get me. "The shuttle isn't running today. The guy who drives it isn't here." And not in an empathetic, "Oooh sorry it's not running today," kind of way, more like he was solving a math problem: no emotion, it was my problem. "Oh," I said, "I thought it ran every day I have an appointment to get to." No apology, no empathy came from Ray. He didn't give a crap. Wow. So I said, "Ok, thanks I'll find another way over there." To which he said "Ok, bye." So a day I knew was going to be unpleasant, a big bill, and a visit to the lady doctor has been made into a big annoying cluster***. So now, instead of being able to go get my car I have to make my husband leave work to come take me to my appointment then we'll get the car. He's in training today so he won't be able to come get me for a few hours. Giving me plenty of time to sit and reflect on my experience thus far with JC Automotive on Yelp. Which is good, I'm way behind of my reviews. So we'll see how it goes when we go pick up the car later this afternoon. I have a feeling the bill will be very different if Ray is the one who hands it to me. So we're going to ask for Mike. read more

My car started to have some serious engine trouble over the past week, prompting me to scramble to look for a good mechanic. Having a Honda S2000, I wanted to find someone who specializes in Japanese/Honda sports cars. I was pointed to JC Automotive up in Round Rock by the S2000 Club of America, who told me these guys are honest, reliable, and fantastic at their job. They were absolutely right. After taking this car to a few other mechanics, and speaking to plenty of auto aficionados, I was under the impression that my problem was going to be fairly serious (a broken piston, a bent valve?!) as the car was shaking on idle, under performing and check engine light blinking. I took it here one weekday morning to find it very busy (that already says a lot). Dropped it off, and by the afternoon I got a friendly call from Ray. He told me it was a simple problem of replacing the Ignition Coils on my car, a somewhat pricey but simple procedure. However, he let me know the only reason it's pricey is due to the parts, so he recommended I look around for my self, to find them cheaper, while advising me on what brands to avoid. Their knowledge of my particular car was fantastic. After consulting with them a few times over the phone, we decided I could do the job myself. When i went to go pick up my car, they explained their testing procedure, why I needed to change it, and were not pushy at all for having them do it. I paid my inspection fee ($65) and did the job myself after ordering the parts. While I didn't end up using them for this job, I highly respect their professionalism and will definitely use them again for any problems with any of my cars. Highly recommended! read more

Wow. Just.... Wow. I am new to the area and was leery about taking my car in to a "mom and pop shop" without a recommendation. But my Mazda broke down on me... again... and I was tired of dealing with the dealership. I saw the reviews for this place here on Yelp and thought I'd check it out. When I talked to Ray about the status of my vehicle (after they had looked at it, which they did in a timely manner) he said everything pointed to the throttle body. Now this is the part of the story where I usually get screwed over by the car guy who can very obviously tell I have absolutely NO IDEA what that means. So then he said the dreaded words, "and that's a really expensive problem." Crap. The tears were welling up behind my eyes. But then he advised I just have them clean it out versus replacing the whole thing to see if that would do the trick. That made me breathe a little better and of course I agreed to it because it sounded way cheaper! When I picked the car up Ray was honest with me, said the engine light was off, it seemed to be driving fine, and that he was crossing his fingers for me, but if I had any more problems with it to bring it back. Before I go any further, let me just say that I was already impressed that... #1, They got to my vehicle in a timely manner, #2, They were very professional in their appearance and communication, and #3, They advised a cheaper solution when they easily could have charged me $1,200 to replace the thing (which is probably what the dealership would have done). But THEN... a truly magical thing happened. I got my wallet out to pay them the $65 they had previously told me they would have to charge up front for running the diagnostics on the check engine light, and the guy said, "No charge." Wait.... What? No charge? I mean, they DID WORK. They cleaned out the thing. They ran the diagnostic test. Seriously?? I'm sold. I told the guy, "I hope you don't take this the wrong way, but I hope I never see you again." I mean, no one WANTS to take their car in to the shop. But if (OK, when) I have problems with my car in the future, I will feel 100% comfortable and confident taking it to this place. I am so impressed. I really can't say enough about the experience. I've been here for an inspection and an oil change on my fairly new truck, so I can't speak for anything major being done, just basic car stuff. I think this is a really well maintained shop and I feel great bringing my truck here. The staff answers any and all my 'girl' questions and they are never condescending about it. Lots of cool car geeks come here and it's fun to hear them talk about racing with the staff. Makes me happy they all have a genuine interest in cars! 1) It takes for-freakin'-ever for work here. When we first moved to Austin it took them over *5* hours to do inspections on our two trucks. I know mine squeaked through with a fault that didn't let it pass when I lived in Vermont but I'm not complaining :) because I didn't have the cash to fix it when we moved here! My oil change took an hour to get done. Normally I'm in and out in a half hour at the dealer. They didn't seem that busy but who knows. I would recommend dropping your car off and going for lunch... and a hike... and then a nap... and then waiting in line to renew your license... then come back. 2) This is just a personal beef, and it's happened twice. I only care because I really, really love my truck and I take GREAT care of it. And I saved up a LONG time to be able to afford it. Both times I have seen mechanic who "test drove it" for inspection and after oil changes go FLYING out of the parking lot and FLYING back in. It really, really pissed me off. So, in true Katie style, I e-mailed the owners. Dan, Service Manager, got back to me within 24 hours. He even made a Ferris Bueller parking garage scene reference. I drive used cars. They're paid for, and I'm not embarrassed about it. I've never had a car payment, and never bought a car from a dealership, from the time I got my first car to this very day. I take good care of cars, and only buy cars that I expect to hit 200,000 miles. Needless to say, I have spent a lot of time with auto mechanics. It is with that experience, that I feel I can recommend these guys. Their location is good (if you're in Round Rock.) The service is good, and they are straight with you on money. I've never had to bring my car back for a repair that didn't take, and I've never had any leaks or creaks resulting from their work. They're a great place to take a car that you're thinking about buying. Their pre-purchase check is solid, and has saved me from getting into some bad vehicles. One Friday afternoon we were headed out of town on a trip. We stopped for gas at a gas station a few blocks away, and the car wouldn't start back. We got it towed to JC Auto, and even though it was basically closing time, they got the part we needed (a new starter, I think) got it in and got us back on the road for our trip, with only a minor slow-down. I'm holding off on that 5th star because of one experience, possibly a fluke, that involved my car being stored at their place over the weekend of an historic torrential downpour... We had a verbal agreement to put my car under covered parking, but somehow the roof leaked and it got water in the cabin. Doesn't seem like the kind of thing that would happen when it's under cover, does it? Anywhere else I would have just never gone back, but the body of work these people had, were enough for me to go back, talk to them, and keep getting my car's work done there. I moved to Round Rock across country from Pennsylvania last year and one thing I was really concerned about was finding a good auto mechanic. My brother is a certified mechanic and always worked on the family vehicles. I never thought I'd be able to find a place I could trust as much as someone in my own family, but Auto-Spec is it. These guys are awesome and definitely well worth all of the great reviews they have on here. I've been here several times with two different vehicles and the customer service here is always top notch (and I have over 20 years of customer experience myself). I've always dealt with Mike who is a great guy and thoroughly explains everything and goes over all the options. He's very knowledgable and isn't condescending or doesn't talk over your head. You can tell that the owners definitely know how to run business as the place has a great atmosphere and the employees are always joking around and having a good time. They do offer a shuttle service if you need a ride back to your place that I've used once and the driver was accommodating and very friendly. I couldn't recommend this place enough and I can't imagine taking my vehicles anywhere else. Definitely give them a shot. read more

First time here and when I mentioned I chose them because of Yelp, the guy was so proud of the rep they've built online. Said it's tough though because everyone has such high expectations when they cam there. Well, I'm just finishing up my first visit, and I can tell you that their ranking is very well deserved. Never, EVER been talked to/treated as respectfully and thoughtfully as I have been here today. Not only were they completely friendly (everyone, including the way the shuttle driver interacted with the other people waiting), but they provided low-cost suggestions for my car repair that they easily could have explained differently and had me spending $$$. Will definitely be coming back for future car repair needs, and would highly recommend JC to anyone in the Round Rock, Georgetown, North Austin area who appreciates fantastic service and smart technicians. Picked this place strictly off YELP reviews. I called and spoke to Ray, he seemed like a nice guy on the phone. Ray was awesome in person, he was straight forward and seemed to know exactly what was going on. I brought in my vehicle and since I am from out of town I waited around for it till the work was done. Very pleased now that my AC blows cold, and that it was less expensive than I thought. I think the reason some people rated their experience with Ray less than 5 stars is because he doesn't BS around... He gets a 5 from me, as does the rest of the staff I dealt with. read more

After my very first experience with JC Automotive, I knew that I wasn't going to take my car anywhere else. While sitting in their waiting area (with free wi-fi!), I saw two separate people come in and be told, "There's nothing wrong with your car. It looks to be working just fine." That would have been all I needed to hear to know that JC was my place, but there's so much more to them than that. Yes, JC is in Round Rock, but don't fret. They'll drive you home and then pick you up when your car's ready--at no extra charge. They'll explain things to you in ways that you'll understand, even if you don't know cars. I trust them enough to ask straight out, "Do I need to get this done now, or can I put it off?" And, yes, getting your car fixed is expensive. JC makes it ridiculously easy, however. They have a 90-days-same-as-cash program, so you can spread out that expense. When I was there I was even told, "If you have trouble making a payment on the expected date, give us a call and we'll see what we can do." I think it's really important to find a good mechanic and stick with them, especially if you don't know cars, and I'll be sticking with JC. read more

Ever since I purchased my miata, I've been taking her to JC, which was highly recommended by the previous owner. My overall experience (2+years) with them is indeed satisfying. My miata is sorta old so she has problems on and off. John, the head mechanic of JC, is an expert of miata so I don't need to worry any "unskillful issue". Unlike other shady car shops that are all over the city and ready for every second to rip you off, JC is different. They are professional and friendly enough to explain what is going on with my car (in the language that I can understand), how I can keep my expense low, and more importantly, my miata would still run smoothly. Yes, it's in Round Rock but hey, good service is hard to come by. Treat yourself with some famous Round Rock Donuts on your way, problem solved. read more

Really, when it comes down to it, I feel confident bringing my car to JC. I've had a '96 Accord for almost 8 years, so I've seen my fair share of auto shops. I also am a younger woman and used to get SO nervous to take my car in. I felt like a bullseye was painted on my credit card! Everyone that works at JC is very knowledgeable and not above answering ALL of my questions. If I ask why the labor is a certain charge, they will literally explain what had to be taken off and why. The service is very transparent, and that is key! Recently, I had a coupon for an oil change at another shop down the road, and they told me I needed to have the timing belt replaced. They gave me a quote that almost made me cry! I went down the road to JC and their quote was $600 less and they actually were replacing more for me. They also have an easy shuttle service that has never failed me, and a 12 month/12k warranty on all work. The ONE AND ONLY problem I have with them is that this shop is busy. My car is usually there for over 24 hrs. However, this isn't even enough to touch the 5 stars & their popularity is only an indicator of how many people trust them! read more

I've come to find that people usually only take the time to write bad reviews of mechanics and the like, so to see so many positive reviews on Yelp and other sites I knew this place had to be good. I was right. Any mechanic that tells you something doesn't need to be done to your car is the one to keep, that's these guys. Extremely professional and honest, and talk about an immaculately run facility, spotless. They are also good about not dumbing down their explanations, I'm pretty good on car stuff, they picked up on that and weren't afraid to talk shop with me. They also stayed late to figure out my tricky major repair (a clutch rebuild) that was giving them a little trouble, they almost seemed excited to be challenged by it! You know what? We moved back to Texas last year, and I knew it was only a matter of time before my wife's 1999 Alero (with 130K) would require attention that I couldn't provide myself. Over the years, we've learned the hard way that finding a good auto shop is harder than finding a good doctor (and almost as important). Thank you, internet. After reading the reviews on yelp and citysearch, we rolled the dice on John and Corky's. From the first call to set up an appointment for our rough-running car, I knew this experience was going to be different from those in the past. Dan, the service manager, actually made the effort to carefully listen to the problems and advise me BEFORE I brought the car to them. After their shop had analyzed the car, Dan called me and clearly explained the work that could be done, and what I could expect from the car following the work. He didn't dumb it down, or try to talk in oblique garage-speak. and no high pressure, "Your car will burst into flames during rush hour if you don't have this done" sales crap. The exact costs were quoted, and I gave them the go-ahead to work on the engine. The work was completed within a couple of hours, exactly as described. And best of all, my wife is happy with her car again - and getting much better mileage to boot. Overall, the shop was clean, the employees polite, and the waiting area was nice - not just a couple of greasy chairs and a battered coke machine like some places. Trust is hard-won in their business, but they've earned a lot from our first experience. We will be back to see them again - just not too soon, hopefully. read more

I was recommended Auto Spec by a coworker who had a friend who took his Mazda there. So, a suggestion from a friend OF A friend must be pretty trustworthy since it was word of mouth, and not a firsthand account. Anyway, I had regularly taken my car to the dealership to have oil changes and repairs, and when my check engine light came on, they told me I needed a new engine ($4k-$6k) and I would be better off just buying a new car. Hmmm... I wanted a second opinion, as the car had no other symptoms of a problem. I went to Auto Spec and they looked into the problem a lot further, and as it turns out, the dealership was wrong. Mike was super friendly, and was very up front with me. He is definitely the personality in the shop. A few other reviews on here say that Ray is more laid back and sounds uninterested on the phone. You know what? He knows his stuff, and all I care about is that he is knowledgable, trustworthy, and dependable, which is not only him but everyone else in the shop. The shuttle service is a REALLY nice perk. I took advantage of it once and they picked me up from work, brought me back to the shop, and we had a nice chat the whole way back. Since it is a FREE service that they are nice enough to offer, you need to be flexible with your time, just like if one of your friends was giving you a ride. If you have time restrictions, call a taxi. Come on people, its common sense! Some lady commented that she was annoyed the shuttle wasn't available one day. Are you joking? The prices are more than fair. Now that I'm going to them, I feel like I have been getting ripped off at the dealership this whole time. They care about their customers, they remember you, they remember your car. You're not just a dollar sign to them, you are a person, which makes such a huge difference. read more
