Look, I admit I felt a little out of place bringing my 2009 VW GTI to Auto Werkstatt. The classic Porsches in the lobby, and the ridiculously cool BMWs in the garage were at first intimidating. But....I'm going to to keep bringing my VW here! Ken took the time on several occasions to talk to me about my GTI even when it wasn't ready for service. He didn't push me into new brakes at my last visit and got me a great deal on tires. He ran a diagnostic test and found a warranty issue prior, and the very least I can do is let the rest of you know this is a "good guy repair shop". The bottom line is he's honest and runs an honest shop. I don't feel at the mercy of dreaded warning lights as at the dealer, and actually feel secure that he just wants the car to run well. I just had my 528 in here to get the brakes replaced after getting it checked by someone else who said I needed all 4 sets of pads and rotors replaced. Kenny had his guys look at it and I only needed the backs replaced. They are the most honest and hardworking group of guys in the area. I very rarely write bad reviews because i'm in the food serving business, so I know how things go and I know there is miscommunication, mistakes etc. But i'm writing this because I feel like I was being taken advantage of. I came here to get my engine checked because it was approaching 60k miles and my engine hood felt a little hotter and my fan was running extra loud it seemed ( I have a 2006 BMW 325i). The owner told me I would need a new electric water pump for almost $1200 (which I admit is a common problem with my car BUT there are very distinct warning signs, which I learned about after I talked to him and NONE of the signs were present in my car: yellow warning light followed by red light and car going into limp mode). I towed my car home because I didn't have that money. I have been driving it for almost a year now and have added 10k miles on it and I have had NO problems with my car overheating. I also have a reliable mechanic that I trust who has never said anything about my water pump. Also, my best friend's dad goes here, and he says they only charge him $30 to get an oil change. They told me it would cost me $125 and we have the same car!! I know you guys have stellar reviews, but i'm honestly really disappointed about my experience here. read more

I will never go back to Auto Werkstatt for several reasons.... I went to this location because the reviews for BMW dealers were so bad. My advice is, dont judge a shop by only three reviews. My car was not serviced correctly (admitted by Kenny) and he contradicted himself many times during his fast talking, condescending explanation. So if you want a rude, overpriced, partial service, w/o a clear explanation of what happened to your car.... go to Auto Werkstatt, otherwise, keep looking for another good shop, I know I will! read more

Kenny and August are great! I brought my three cars there (Audi and two Porsche) and we do everything from regular oil change to my old Audi needing to replace various things (sparks plug etc etc). My Porsche Cayenne Diesel in particular keeps on having problem. Every time I bring the Cayenne Diesel in for oil change/ service with Kenny. They always find issues with the car , where I would not be able to do the service with Kenny and instead need to bring it back to Porsche dealer because the Cayenne Diesel is still under warranty. This has happened three times and those three times, Kenny always do the right thing where instead of going ahead with doing oil change/ others, he told me to bring it back to the dealer to make sure the dealership fix it since it is still under warranty. Every time after the dealers fix it, I will then bring it back to Kenny to fix the car. Autowerkstatt is very popular and busy so it takes a week usually to get an appointment in the book. But I'm definitely going to be their long time customer based on this service level. Thanks Kenny and August! read more

I am new to SoCal. During my first week in Manhattan Beach, my car needed a new ignition switch. I felt especially vulnerable because it's a new city, and back home, my dad would fix any and every problem I had with my car. I got on Yelp and found Auto Werkstatt. After reading the reviews and doing my own independent research about the symptoms related to my car trouble, I called and talked to Ken (the owner). Within seconds of me telling him of my issues, he confirmed exactly what I had read on-line--that I needed a new ignition switch. He also told me that it is a common problem with Porsche 996's, and that he had the part in stock, and that if I wanted to bring my car in that day, he would move it ahead of every one else's and get the car back to me by that afternoon. Four hours after dropping off my car, it was ready for pick up. He also saved the old part for me to show me what had occurred. Then he told me of some additional repairs that my car would probably need in the near future, and that I should consider coming in and getting the work done. He wasn't pushy about it, and was not trying to "sell" me on the additional repairs. It was just an FYI. I am the daughter of a mechanic, so I know an honest mechanic when I encounter one. Ken is honest and genuinely wants to take care of my car. He has a passion for Porsches, and reminds me a lot of my dad, who shares the same passion for Porsches, as well as other exotic cars. The repairs were done in a very timely manner, and for a reasonable price. Fast forward 3 months** yesterday, I was in Newport Beach, and my car was emitting an "oil-burning" smell. I called Ken and asked him for advice--should I put oil in the car and drive it to him, or tow it? He advised me that the problem is probably an oil leak and since we are unsure about the extent of the leak, it would be best not to risk blowing out the motor, and to have it towed instead. He advised me that when I called AAA, I needed to specifically request a flat-bed tow truck. I ended up having to wait 5 hours before AAA's tow truck could get there, which meant that we would arrive at Auto Werkstatt after normal business hours. Ken WAITED for me to arrive with my car. Yesterday was Friday, and Ken has a family, but he went out of his way to make sure someone would be there for me. He really went above and beyond to ensure I was taken care of. I was not sure about this place until I read the reviews. They were right. Kenny was very helpful, knowledgeable and I got great service with fair prices. He made sure I was able to get my car in and out the day before Thanksgiving. And when I had another issue come up, I took it to him and he gave me fair pricing (even less than original quote) and could have easily taken advantage of the situation because the part ended up not needing replacement, it just needed to be "tightened". I appreciated his honesty and his straight forward approach. He even offered to pay for my rental car when the car wasn't ready on time. He goes above and beyond to keep you coming back. Forget the clutch! The owner is an amazing salesman, but buyer beware. If you ask about you clutch, he will sell you on getting a new one even if you don't need it. A few years back I brought it in and he said that I needed a new clutch, which he sold me on, and after the fact I had another mechanic (who heard about what I had done) laugh and say that my clutch was fine, that he is known for the clutch upsell. When it comes to getting a new clutch, I suggest doing more research than me. I just wish he was more honest with me. I would have saved $3,500. read more

Although they focus on BMW, Porsche and other German autos, I did take my Ferrari 360 to the shop for service of the A/C system. They diagnosed the problem, and got me on my way with nice cool air. I don't even know where to begin... I was referred to Auto Werkstatt by a friend of mine who had a very positive experience with Kenny. Being a single girl who doesn't know squat about cars can be be tough when it comes time to find a good, honest mechanic. So when I purchased my used 2001 BMW 330ci a year ago, I took it to Kenny. I have been in to see him maybe 3-4 times this past year for various maintenance work (new brakes, etc.). Every single time I call him he gets me in right away. My car is always finished when he promises and he makes it very easy to get a rental while my car is in his shop (plus he gets a great daily rental rate through the car rental agency which is a huge plus!). He is very fair and doesn't ever try to push extra services on me. He will tell me what he thinks I need to have done next and will give me a time frame on when he thinks it should be done. I am never surprised by the bill at the end as Kenny is very upfront with me about what the cost will be, no hidden charges. He is such an honest, kind person who has become a friend to me. On a Saturday morning, I called this business and Kenny answered the phone. He was busy with a customer but said he would call me back. I doubted that would happen. Not only did he call me back, he recommended places to go that could repair my Mercedes that day. I found Kenny on Yelp 4 years ago and since then haven't gone anywhere else to service my BMW X5. Not only is he the best in the business, he is the most HONEST in the business. He NEVER tries to up charge you nor do repairs that don't need repairing...in fact, he has talked me out of doing some repairs b/c they weren't necessary considering my BMW was a bit older. I use the term "was" b/c when I went to have my car serviced 2 weeks ago, not only did Kenny tell me it wasn't worth putting the additional dollars into the car since I planned on try to sell it that weekend since I was moving out of state, he called a buddy of his and he came down to the shop within 20 minutes and bought my car! I've read all the horror stories on Yelp about servicing ones BMW at the local BMW dealerships, and I wanted to save myself the aggravation of dealing with a service writer with little or no mechanical aptitude. Kenny, on the other hand is not afraid to get his hands dirty in the engine compartment when he's going over your car for necessary repair after scanning it on the computer! I went in for a simple oil change, but after Kenny scanned my car he found problems that the dealership should have caught four months ago while it was still under warranty, but of course back in November and December, the dealership assured me that my BMW was in top notch condition!
