Wine club contention! I love small wineries that are pretty much unknown. I feel like a wino pioneer when I take the first sip! This little (VERY LITTLE) tasting room is on the side of a busy street in San Luis Obispo, and does not apologize for it's tiny selection. Why? Because the wine they do offer is outstanding. Carefully executed, painstakingly crafted wine. I could barely control my exited taste buds when I tasted the tempranillo - barely keep my composure when I tried the spicy zinfandel....this place has that wow factor. Go here immediately, and you'll understand what I'm talking about - great wine, small tasting room, I'll take it any day of the week. read more

I stumbled across this winery as I frequent nearby wineries. I was very eager to try the Sauvignon Blanc, which is one of my favorite varietals. I unfortunately was not impressed with the Sauvignon Blanc which tasted like a Chardonnay. I did notice that they make of their wines in small batches/few cases. The wine did not match my palate preference. The customer service was great. read more

After having a delightful time tasting I decided to leave a review. Then noticed recent reviews were inaccurate. The tasting fee was $15, not $30, and was clearly stated up front. This winery refunds the tasting fee if the wine club is joined. And there's a nice 20% discount for wine club members. The wines were spectacular. It's so great to actually get to meet and visit with the winemaker, and see a small business entrepreneur doing a great job. I've purchased several cases over the past few years and found the quality consistently superb. read more

I've been to Autry Cellars a few times over the years, and each time, I enjoy it more than the previous time. The tasting room is completely unpretentious, and the tasting showcases several of Steve Autry's wines. He's also now making brandy and grappa from the skins and seeds remaining after wine making is complete. On a recent visit, the Malbec was exceptional, but all the wines in the tasting were quality and worthy of taking home. A cool thing about Autry Cellars is its small and boutique approach. Steve Autry and his daughter do everything, from crush, fermentation, press, bottling, and operating the tasting room. On the weekends, Doug mans the tasting room, and he's delightful as well. Since it's a family run winery, you just might arrive while a phase of production is under way and you may get to watch, or even get a barrel sample, or see what it takes to get grapes from the bin to the destemmer, etc. All of this adds up to a unique and enjoyable experience. There's no high pressure, just sharing passion for good wine and sharing his knowledge of science and engineeering from his previous career and applying it to winemaking. It's kind of like Mr. Science teaching winemaking. Very fun, and you're guaranteed to learn something. Oh, and the winery cats are beautiful. Two brothers and their momma all keep an eye on the place. Tip: listen for a jet on its approach to the SLO Airport. Step outside on the deck and wait. Be patient. We love and seek out unpretentious wineries and tasting rooms. This one was perfect. Small and simple tasting room but delicious wines. We had the privilege of meeting the owner, Steve, who not only gave us a lesson in distilling but also showed us his "work in progress" still (pretty brilliant, actually). Personal service where you feel right at home is much more fun than snooty, fancy tasting rooms. Hope we can go back some day! read more

This winery is amazing! All of his wines are fantastic. The wines are definitely spendy but getting to taste them is such a treat. The tasting room is definitely not fancy- think warehouse with a folding table- but that just means they spend money on making the wine and not flashy bars. One of my favorites. Great wines, and Steve is one Kool Kat. If your looking for a snooty fancypants tasting room keep looking, because Autry's is very down home and laid back. There's also a great outdoor patio overlooking the backside of Paragon vineyards, which is perfect for mooning the Amtrack passengers as the train rolls by, or you can watch the planes fly right overhead as they approach the airport. Stumbled upon this winery on our way to Edna Valley. Like other reviews mentioned, it is very small. We came with a group of 5 and waited a few minutes to get our tasting. We tried mostly red wines and one white (Sauvignon Blanc). I absolutely loved the Petite Syrah! Definitely my favorite of the tasting. We tasted outside on the patio which was nice because it was such a beautiful day. The person who served us was very knowledgeable about each wine and answered all of our questions :) We were a group of college students, and I feel like this winery was geared more to the older demographic. Nonetheless, a great winery. I just wish it wasn't $10 to taste and the prices were a tad lower/comparable to other wineries in the area. One bottle is around $35+. If you're in the area, give this winery a try! read more

Best wine tasting experience I have ever had. This is a small, family owned winery. Steve Autry himself lead our tasting. I believe when I called to schedule the reservation, it was his daughter who took my call. They were VERY accommodating and patient. We were the last group of the day at 3pm, but we were the only group at that time, so we got his full attention. We had children with us and it was no issue at all. The timing was great, we were lucky enough to see the train come through the valley, a few small planes, and then a large plane fly over low creating a wind vortex experience that was an unexpected surprise. To top it off, the wine, the stories, the history, and the personality of Steve and his winery/vineyard were all delightful. 10/10 would recommend and 10/10 would return. Thank you Steve. read more

Each wine we tried was vastly different than each of the others- he gets so much flavor into each bottle! We joined the club on the spot. Talk about a wonderful micro winery! First found Autry from an article in a local magazine, sounded intriguing so we went by for a tasting. The tasting room is easy to miss when driving through the Edna Valley so keep your eyes peeled for the sign. If you are heading south and get to Sextant, you missed it, but worth turning around to go back. When you go, you will likely meet Steve, the wine maker, bottler, labeler, shipper, book-keeper etc. He does it all, a true labor of love! Tasitng room is basic but located with some great views of the valley and wineries. You are here for the wines more than anything, and they wont let you down. We tend not to join wine clubs but did with Autry. Very limited production so if you like something, better get it. Steve will also give you quite an education on the wines, how he makes them, and more. We rarely buy whites but did here, his Sav Blanc is truely a red wine drinkers white! Lots of awards have already been had by Autry, a boutique winery not to miss next time passing through this area. read more

We stopped at Autry as our last winery of our SLO wine country trip. We were pleasantly surprised by the wine offerings and we were fortunate enough to get to hang with Steve Autry as he loaded Primitivo must into a bladder press to extract liquid to make grappa and brandy. We learned a lot that day and we got the pleasure of being in the flight path of a nearby regional airport, so we were treated to the underbellies of several planes as they came in for a landing. SUPER casual atmosphere, decent wines and friendly staff make this a good stop if you're in the area. read more

Great family feel! One of the smaller wineries I've been to. Stopped by here with my husband and baby. Everyone was so awesome. They just picked some merlot and were sorting through that so we got to go out back and watch the process. We got an explanation about almost everything at the winery. The family was so friendly and so proud of their winery and their craft. Wines were also delicious! Next time I'll have to try the brandy! read more

Cute spot with a small outdoor patio (outside food allowed) and great wines. It's $15/tasting for 7 wines which is a great deal, and yelp has a 50% off tasting deal as well. The owner is really nice & knowledgable, and takes the time to chat with each customer. We're here at 2pm on a Saturday and we're one of two groups here - definitely a quiet spot off the beaten path. Heard about this winery through a friend that plays in a band with the owner/bass player, Steve. As a bass player and wine lover, I was excited to check Autry out. It didn't disappoint and was a great experience. First off, be aware, this is NOT like the other wineries you've been to. It's small, it's bare bones, and it's passionate. You're not going to find 50 people here, nor can the tasting room hold more than 10. You won't get some young Poly student who is working a weekend job in a tasting room (not that there's anything wrong with that). You won't get cheesy music in the background and an indifferent server. However, what you will find are wines made and poured by people who really care about each bottle and grape. We tried a Pinot Noir, a Chardonnay, a red blend, and a Malbec. They were all really good, but the Malbec was a standout. We joined the wine club because you can just tell they are trying to do something unique and exciting to highlight each grape's features. Apparently they only make 1000 cases a year, but in 16 varieties. They're also looking to start with a selection of Brandy (yes!). With all that in mind, the wine club seemed like an excellent idea because we can't wait to see what else they come up with. read more

First stop in SLO, never been here before. OMG this is an authentic winemaker experience, with huge yet approachable wines with Jack the tasting room pourer the best ever. My favorite was the Petite Sirah. Nothing showy nor pretentious here, just genuine down home winemaking art, with a former aeronautical engineer at the helm tweaking every nuance of the process. This should be a definite stop for anyone exploring up and coming Central Coast wineries. Easily accessible right next to the San Luis Obispo airport. Don't miss it. read more

My girlfriend and I visited this winery yesterday and had a great time! Steve and Doug were incredibly welcoming hosts. They were so friendly; upon entering, they immediately began showing us how the wines are made. They also told us about their brandy distilling which I found very interesting. The $5 tasting was a bargain as many local wineries are starting to raise their base tasting prices. Autry wines were also phenomenal! Great wines served by great winemakers. Did a wine tasting recently and was very impressed with the quality of the wines at a reasonable price point for the quality. Had four wines all of which I enjoyed. The Chardonnay was especially good and the red blend was phenomenal: complex, bold and well structured. The tasting room is low-key and unpretentious and the person pouring the wines was very knowledgeable. Tasting fee is $5 which is decent for the area. read more

Not sure what Lacey's problem was... The wine is extremely delicious, bursting with varietal characteristics and yummy fruit flavors. My favorites at the moment are the Malbec, Pinot Noir, and Petite Syrah, and always the Tertian Harmony. Steve Autry has a delightful sense of humor and is always to share stories about the adventures of wine making...and will even teach you a little about music if you ask. Being a resident of northern California I get so spoiled with the plentiful wineries nearby. So anytime I travel I always make the effort to seek out smaller wineries I am unfamiliar with. Since we were headed to San Luis Obispo, I did some quick research and came across Autry cellars. We were not disappointed in our visit. The winemaker was right there entertaining my younger daughter with the cutest kitten ever who has taken up residence in the barrel room and the tasting host poured some delicious and powerful reds along with the most delicious Chardonnay I have ever tasted. These wines were truly the work of a master winemaker and worth seeking out. We had a great time there, and the winemaker was enjoyable to talk with too. He told us the kitten's name was muscat. We went there with a group of people right when he was shutting things down and he was kind enough to let us in and tell us all about the wine while we tasted:) I would highly recommend the Tempranillo for any red wine drinker... He has a little place in SLO right now but is working on moving his winery to 5450 Edna Road which will really give his wine the justice it deserves. Loved Steve, loved his wines and his winery. Such a renaissance man! So brilliant. This is off a dirt road so I will probably never find it again. Just kidding. Saved his card. Loved the place. While I was there with two old friends, none of us were that familiar with the area, but, we managed to find Steve and Autry Cellars. They have a wine club that is probably really good. I like wine tasting but do not belong to any clubs. I am going to recommend his wines and his club to my neighbors because they do enjoy wines a lot. Steve talked about his de-oxygen process for bottling and I learned a lot more about keeping the oak taste in the barrels without having to go out and get new ones. Very clever man! We tasted the Chardonnay, which I loved because I like white wines and three other reds. I believe a Pinot Noir and one that started with a t that both my friends liked a lot and bought some. Anyway, go if and when in SLO town and enjoy the experience of not only the wines but the Vintner and the tasting area. You won't find this anywhere else but at Autry Cellers. So unique. read more
