First time visiting. Won't be back. Ordered the Migas with chorizo. I was enjoying my food until I almost swallowed a piece of plastic. There was a piece of plastic from the chorizo packaging in my food. Told the manager. She apologized, said the would take it off my bill then asked if I wanted something else. I wanted the same order again, because it was good. Got a new order. Ate no issues. When my husband got the bill my food was comped. We were told because I ordered something else she would not take it off. The took off my bacon and my apple juice. We didn't push the issue. Won't be back. I almost choked on a whole piece of plastic.i hope i don't get sick from the plastic being cooked in my food. read more

Took my husband here since he's a sucker for breakfast places. Food was good, I got some french toast and it had a little too much syrup which made it extremely sweet but it was still delicious. The second time my husband took some friends with him and he said the sausage tasted like it had gone bad, he had an upset stomach for the remainder of the day hopefully that was just a one time thing. It's not anything out this world, but definitely worth a try (just be a little cautious about the sausage lol). read more

This is a proper Jersey diner restaurant but right here in downtown Houston! I love it!!! I absolutely love Jersey-style diners. We had the corned beef hash and (here's where Texas steps into play) we also had the chilaquiles con chorizo, which were both VERY GOOD! I'll be back for sure to try other items. Tbh no. Diner vibes are definitely there but the food was missing. The biscuits tasted like they were made by aunt jemima's dog. They were almost right but you could just tell something was wrong hence the dog. Great place to go if you want average diner food tho I guess. Sorry to give this review but wanted something more. Hanging in there after all these years, old town Houston, always a question if there will be room. Go early for the blue plates specials as they run out later. Or go after 1-1:30 pm during the week to avoid the lunch crowd. $1 for pie or cake totally worthwhile (after buying an entree). Disappointed with the apple pie (soggy, tasteless), impressed with the chocolate cream pie. Previously had the meatloaf, tuna melt, both acceptable for the reasonable price. Waitstaff on their game, wave any of them over, they work as a team. Have often enjoyed their breakfasts, hash browns and omelets. read more

Slightly disappointed this morning. I asked for hard scrambled eggs and I received very soft scrambled. I sent it back and they had scraped those eggs back in a pan and burned them then put them back on top and gave it back to me. My toast was so burned I couldn't eat it either. This is one of the best old-school diners in town. The breakfast is southern comfort and is amazing. Their biscuits are warm and fluffy, their gravy is nice and thick, and their eggs are very tasty. Their breakfast meats are very good and well cured. The staff is amazing. They will welcome you with an open smile and if they identify you as a regular they will remember who you are and what you like to eat. It is a shame that places like this are dying but I'm glad the Avalon diner is going strong. Highly recommend for breakfast. read more

I have been a customer of Avalon Diner for over fifty years. I was a customer at the original location in the pharmacy. For years and years I have regularly gone to the Avalon. I have a longer history with the Avalon than anyone who works there today. Today may have been the last meal I intend to have at the Avalon. The service and food has gotten so horrible that I cannot think of a good reason to return. I ordered the Wednesday special chopped sirloin patty with broccoli/cheese/rice and the stuffing. It was also tasteless other than the taste of salt. The meat was so tough that it required chewing and chewing and even more chewing. Remarkable for chopped beef. The last bite I took, which was about five bites total was so tough I spit the meal out into a napkin and left. The waitress I had today is someone who was been a waitress for many, many years. When she saw that I was leaving having barely eaten anything on my plate said nothing. The waitress said nothing and clearly did not care. read more

I had breakfast there, bad waitressing service, incorrect preparation on my meal, the waitress took it back and never replaced it. The place needs a major cleaning, dust build-up dirty ceiling fans and light chains. The worst was the filthy plastic dividers. My food was hot and good except for the incorrect preparation of my hash browns. I had to wait rather lengthy to get coffee and refills. I asked the waitress for more coffee and she tells me "after she goes to cleans a table"......WOW! She was horrible, slow, bad attitude and very much in need of professionalism training. read more

I usually don't give five stars but this place is liking stepping back in time. They serve breakfast all day which is amazing. They also have lunch specials but they're not open all day they're only open until four. Hand-spun milkshakes homemade lemonade fresh squeezed everything here is homemade from scratch. They have a wrap around counter with bar stools like something you would see in the fifties.. some of the people that are working here have been working here since it opened. The diner - established in 1938 - is a highly cherished time capsule in the middle of River Oaks/Upper Kirby. You'll find vintage booth and counter seating, old posters, signs and b&w family photos on the wall, an old fashioned milkshake mixer behind the counter - and an approachable staff that moves fast during the morning rush. I prefer to sit at the bar since seating turns over quickly. Order some coffee, breakfast - which is served all day, and don't skip out on the hot and fluffy biscuits - and dessert. They also have made-to-order, hand-squeezed lemonade and cold, soda fountain treats. Food: The food here is really good. Tasty, fresh, and most importantly the food came out hot. I had the buffalo chicken sandwich which was really tasty. The portion was really big and the fries were crispy the way I like them. I also the fried pickles, which the portion size was huge for $3.99. I also tried the breakfast burrito which tasted very homemade, almost the way my grandparents used to make them at home. Overall, the food was really good and I'm excited to try more things on the menu. Service: The service was great. She was very attentive, polite, knowledgeable, and made good conversation. She promptly sat us and took our drink order. She got the drinks out quickly and kept our glasses full. She also quickly came back to take our order and had the food out in 10-15 minutes. My bf loves breakfast foods and he always says Houston is lacking on good diners. He doesn't want anything fancy, just good ol' southern breakfast or diner breakfast foods. Well.. I saw Avalon Diner on a list in some article and decided to bookmark it for a day we wanted to go out for breakfast somewhere and the day came on Sunday!! We came around 12:30pm and surprisingly for Sunday brunch, there was only 2 other parties in line in front of us! They have a bench and it's first come, first serve seating and they just seat the next party when a table opens up. We saw 2 seats at the counter and all the other parties were larger so we went right in and sat down. The staff were so friendly, and definitely a diner feel since the servers were all older in age as well. We loved it. They were quick and the food was as expected! He ordered an omelette with hash browns and I ordered a waffle with eggs, bacon and hash browns on the side! He said there wasn't anything they could've done better with the omelette cause it was what he wanted - and the hash browns were cooked right and crispy on the ends. My eggs were cooked perfectly over easy - and the bacon was good - a little fatty for a piece but cooked well. The waffle was soft - a little short and not as fluffy but it was good. Came with butter and syrup that wasn't overly sweet. I wish there was some fruit to go with it though cause it was a bit dry and I wish the ends were a bit crispier. The jam just didn't do it. I devoured everything though and we were both happy campers when we left. That and it was very inexpensive. They also serve milkshakes and lunch items. My bf said the coffee was good. I wish they had fresh squeeze OJ as well. Yum yum! Don't expect fancy and you won't be disappointed. read more

I have lived close to this diner for so long and I never noticed it was there! My sister wanted to come here because she found it in a Houston Press blog that listed it as one of the top 10 restaurants in River Oaks. It's located in a shopping center on Westheimer near the intersection of Kirby. I came here on a Sunday morning for brunch and it was packed but there was no wait and we were seated immediately. I ordered the Oreo Milkshake with Beef Sliders. The Oreo Shake was delicious and they put the extra milkshake in another cup so it was enough to share. The beef sliders with fries were good but nothing special. They're just your average beef patties on Hawaiian bread with crinkle cut fries. The interior is cute and decorated like an old fashioned diner. I won't be returning but I was glad I tried it at least once! read more

With people reading their news papers, small tv hanging from the ceiling, a coat rack that's serving it's purpose, and wait staff that calls you honey. Great food, good coffee, and fantastic service ... you just can't get much better than this for breakfast on the weekends. We had the chilaquiles with eggs over medium. The eggs were cooked perfectly, the chilaquiles has just the right amount of spice, and the hashbrowns were grilled just right. The chicken fried steak is hand-battered and delicious. It's served with a handmade biscuit that is crumbly and doughy. The gravy is a classic white gravy made just right. Oh, and the coffee is good! That's not generally the case, but it is with Avalon. I ate at Avalon diner this morning for breakfast. The food was basic but well done. A standard bacon and eggs with a muffin. I've seen waaaay too many restaurants screw this meal up but it was very good. I got a fruit bowl for the side. As I normally do, I ate mainly the strawberries and left the cantaloupe. I maybe bias since I've been going for about 17 years now , and still the same amazing staff waits the tables, and have long before I started coming in as a resident that has lived a few blocks away whenever living in Houston.
