I had my first appointment at this salon yesterday. The quality and experience was nice as was the stylist. I was getting a balayage on medium length hair with a cut and style. I expected to be at the salon for at least 3.5-4 hours. The appt time listed 3 hrs 45 minutes. I was there about 4 hours 15 minutes, which I thought was long but sort of expected. At the end, they told me the price, I paid with a card and the receptionist told me a receipt would be sent to my email. Once I reviewed the email receipt, I was confused and annoyed. Apart from the balayage cost and cut and style cost, there were additional charges. They charged an extra $20 per 15 minutes over the expected time, $40 total. They charged a credit card fee of ~$9. They charged $24 for "extra color". They charged a 5% extra tip on top of the tip I gave "to cover stylist taxes" (apparently this is preselected on the tipping screen and if you don't notice and unselect it gets immediately added). Almost $70 of extra, hidden charges. None of this was discussed. I feel all of these extra charges are misleading and frankly, shady. I called to discuss this and the receptionist stated "we do charge about $100/hr so the service was actually charged less than we should have charged." Like, what? Then advertise and charge that upfront! I have no problem paying for services rendered, but price transparency is important to me. I would have been a regular customer because I did like the salon experience, but this business practice makes me hesitate to go back. Avalon gets one star from me. My appointment was canceled the same day without any heads-up, which was really frustrating. There wasn't much communication, and it felt like the situation wasn't handled with much care. I understand things happen, but a simple notice would have made a big difference. I requested highlights. I did not get them. I also requested NO mouse colors. My hair was rinsed with something and rinsed again with something else. It turned out mouse Grey. The cut was longer on one side than the other. I made a comment on my sweatshirt. She said it was very cheap. Very rude. All this rinsing cost the same as highlights. Very unhappy! read more

I got a facial with Inna and am now a believer! When you walk in, the vibe is very upbeat but chill - hot tea, lemon water or coffee offered. The spa area is behind a door that immediately slows the pace of life and sets the mood for relaxation. Inna does a fantastic facial - my skin (and my mood in general) felt amazing when I left. TL:DR Everyone is very friendly but would avoid unless you have a specific stylist in mind and only talk with them. First photo is my original hair left and the first session right. Ok so here is my novel: I normally specifically request stylists when I get my hair done but I have had positive experiences at Aveda salons and had recently moved...I really do like their toners for blonde. So it all started when I called asking for someone who was a blonde specialist and that I wanted full highlights and a root smudge. I was in no rush and would have gladly waited a month or two for an opening but the lady on the phone said Elizabeth had an appointment open that week. She trained other stylists and was very good with blonde. I figured that will work. The day of the appointment another lady calls and says Elizabeth is sick but Coral is available and is very good. I felt put off but said that was fine. (I come to find out she is newer, nothing wrong with that, just felt misled and wished they would have just told me that). I get there and show my inspo photos to Coral saying I probably want highlights and a root smudge to get to them. She said she could do that and suggested lowlights (to get that breakup at the roots) and I figured she was the expert so said that sounds good. I did say my natural color is an ash 7 -ish and she agreed. I was imagining ash lowlights to blend in with my roots. Coral worked diligently and it looked like she was doing everything right but when it came time to blow dry my hair was very dark and a bit too warm. She asked if I liked it and it was very pretty but nothing like my inspo photos. The "red" I was trying to get out of the top of my head was now in my ends (which it wasn't there before). I didn't want to hurt her feelings as she is so nice but she insisted I say what I thought and I said I think it's a bit too dark to which she replied "I thought I got you lighter than that". I did know my hair would lighten a bit after washing a couple of times so paid and went home. At home I took a photo of the new hair and that's when I saw it was quite a bit darker then when I went in. But what I was really afraid of was the warm lowlights getting warmer as it was not blending very well with my ash roots. The next morning I called and asked for maybe a new toner to take care of the warmth. The lady said Elizabeth was available that day if I could come in. I said yes but I only had time for a consultation (as I have a baby and need my husband to be off work to really do anything with my hair). I drove there and met Elizabeth and talked with her, she insisted that the only way to get the warm parts out would be to do another round of highlights. She also said to get my inspo photos I would need multiple sessions and one session could not get it light enough. I pointed out my ends were lighter when I started and I did not agree with her that my hair could not get any lighter in that one session. She also said I lift warm which doesn't even make sense as the warm was not in my ends when I went there. I asked how much that would cost (as I've never need to do that and I know that it takes a lot of work). She talked with someone and said it would be covered no charge. I scheduled to get it done with her the next time she was available (Originally I was told that Sunday but then Elizabeth said later in the week would be better). As that appointment nears I get another phone call from the lady (I think she is the manager or owner of the store) and she says she talked with Elizabeth and Coral and said Coral said she told me that I couldn't get it that light in one session. Obviously this was never said to me but also my hair was darker then I went in with. Either way I'm not going to argue as I already explained everything to Elizabeth. She then says she thinks Coral should fix my hair and that I could just be charged per foil... She said a couple should do it. At this point I am frustrated bc why didn't they figure this all out when I went there. But also I know my ends are too warm and it's needs to be lighted so what's another $40-ish at this point. So I say ok. Once I get there Coral lightens my hair and when I go to pay, the person at the counter says it $120. I had skipped lunch to make it to the appointment and was starving so didn't feel like arguing at that point so just payed and left. In the end I guess the things that stressed me out the most was the constant "telephone" game between the 3 people and no one being on the same page. I don't think any of them meant to cause confusion but it happened all the same. Also being charge double for getting my hair done. I really do wish them all the best and do recommend Coral and the salon but I would only talk with one person to avoid confusion. read more

Always get a great cut from Christine and/or Kim. However, the salon has started adding a credit card surcharge, as have many other businesses. I have no problem with that, but they also slap the surcharge on debit transactions, which I've not encountered with other businesses I patronize, and I use my debit card a lot. Bring cash if you don't want to get stuck with a surcharge. read more

I've had two pedicures here--one that was great and one that was just okay. I also recently had a massage that was pretty good, but I wish the masseuse had spent more time on the area that I wanted to address before we ran out of time; I walked out of that appointment feeling better, but still pretty tight in one area. Overall, the services here are fine and I'll probably return. But my biggest complaint is the state of the fish tank in the massage waiting area. Those poor fish are living in a scummy, filthy environment. One little fish at the bottom was either already dead or on its way out. Businesses: if you don't want to invest the time and energy it takes to care for these animals, then don't buy fish. They are living creatures, not decorations. read more

After being called from the salon to come in earlier to accommodate the stylist, which I did, my stylist came out to tell me she was running behind because her client had a lot of hair. There was no way I was going to go home and come back. To make matters worst I emailed the director of the salon the next day and still no answer. I was very surprised no manager reached out to me. I came here with my mom for mother-daughter facials last weekend, and it was an a-okay experience. The space is nice, and the estheticians were kind. Avalon's location makes it a great little spot to combine shopping in Deer Park with a spa/hair appointment -- all without having to repark! And while overall, we had a great time, a couple things during our facials were a little weird. #1: the facials include a whole foot portion... and it weirded me out. The word facial has the word "face" built into it, yet the appointment started with a foot soak in literally just a bowl of hot water. Later, there was some intense foot massage action (a first for me). #2: the facials didn't really include extractions. The lady doing mine did maybe two or three, but the steam was only focused on 1/4 my face. My mom's facial had zero extractions. Depending on what you're looking for, Avalon might fit the bill. There's minimal downtime, and my skin did look pretty glowy for 4 days after. But overall, the whole experience didn't make me want to go rushing back. read more

I made 2 appointments here for my daughter's homecoming...hair and makeup. The hair appointment was fine, but seriously overpriced. We had to wait an extra half hour for her makeup appointment, which made her late for pictures. It also made the rest of her group late. Nobody apologized ever. I sat in the lobby for over 2 hours and not a single person ever expressed any regret. The topper is that her makeup was meh at best I spent $200 to be angry and late, and for my daughter to be upset. This pretentious place is one I will never come back to. Spas like this are all over the area. You'd think they would want happy customers, but you'd be wrong. read more

If I could give the salon a negative star rating I would. I came to the salon for the first time a couple months before my wedding back in 2019 and requested the best ranking of hair colorist. When explaining to the hairstylist what I wanted it was the exact same thing that I had I just wanted my highlights done and for the color to match what I have already had. When she was finished, all of my hair actually looked a couple shades darker than what I had come in with. I was shocked. It was evident she had put in a wrong choice of toner which resulted in overall darker hair. Considering the fact that I was very very blonde and that's how I wanted it to be for the wedding it was a complete shock to me where afterwards I spent the next 15 minutes crying in the bathroom and regretted coming in. Instead of telling me to fix it another time they went ahead and stripped my hair of what they had already done with a treatment that was put on my hair and my hair was colored again which resulted in a ton of damage. It's now two years later and my hair is still damaged and recovering from that experience. I would not recommend coming to the salon unless you're 100% sure that the person you're taking knows what they're doing. I am absolutely scarred and traumatized by that experience of the hair colorist that works at the salon. Will never come here ever even if they offer me complimentary treatments. read more

I've gotten my hair done here for years with various stylists, but for about the last 3 years I have been seeing Hannah. I am constantly getting compliments about my hair, her highlights are the best. Hannah is creative, attentive, and really knows the Aveda products. She also gives the best head and hand massages! I always leave Avalon looking and feeling great! Avalon also have a beautiful private spa in back that is a completely different experience from the hustle of the main floor. I would recommend Avalon, and specifically Hannah to anyone looking for a great stylist! read more

Came in for an eyebrow wax and tint and absolutely loved my esthetician. She took time to understand both my brows and my goals and recommended the best solution for my needs/wants. Very careful and attentive. They have some great Aveda and Opi products at the entrance that are worth a look. I bought two peachy pink nail polishes. The check-out process was a little awkward as I had to step over a team member who was inventorying eyeshadow in plastic bags on the floor of the lobby. One star less than five for this reason. Came here to get both manicure and pedicure. Was satisfied with the manicure (although it started chipping two days later, life happens). The tech listened when I asked her not to cut my cuticles. I was extremely disappointed with the pedicure though. The tech barely rubbed my feet with a pumice stone. I am more forceful on my own in the shower than she was. And my feet REALLY needed more than a light rub, they needed a callus razor!! I know some places don't claim to do that, but will offer it if really needed, and I needed!! The pedicure cost $55, and for that I left with feet in no better condition than when I got there except for two coats of nail polish. Won't be going back. read more

I love going to Avalon for my hair and nails. I'm notorious for being especially picky about who does my hair. I highly recommend Trina! I wouldn't go to anyone else. I have a tendency to grow my hair out to donate and so it's often long between visits, but Trina picks up like we just chatted last week. Always feel welcomed by her and I know she is able to handle my persnickety hair. Also, I have been going regularly to get my nails done by Pam. Again, I highly recommend her. She really cares about my nails and how they last. She wants to make sure I am happy. Doris is also good and my mom regularly gets her nails done by Sophie. When you arrive they offer you a beverage and then take you to the waiting area. It's always nice to have a drink as you wait...if you have to wait. read more

This place is FANTASTIC! I had a wonderful experience getting highlights from Trina, who is a master stylist there. My hair has been colored so many times (blonde, red, brown) with both permanent and semipermanent dye. She took me from a washed out brown color that was also in bad need of a decent haircut, and transformed it into a gorgeous blonde color that she toned perfectly. The cut was just as good as the color! I've had so many botched haircuts in the past, and now I've become very wary of stylists. However, Trina is extremely talented and takes pride on her work. She definitely made me a new client of hers! Aside from the great color and cut, the overall experience was great. The owner, Bonnie, is very involved with the salon. She is very knowledgable about her business, and is also very kind and friendly. Her front desk staff is as well, and the place is kept in mint condition and is extremely clean. This is really sad because I get massages once or twice a month and have for a decade and I wanted to try this salon because it was closer to my home. If they had been gracious about THEIR SYSTEMS mixup as apposed to basically making it my fault it would have been better and ended differently. I've never been treated like this and was very uncomfortable with the way their manager handled this. I was really looking forward to my massage - they confirmed on email my massage was at 3. But their system had me down at 2:30. So I arrived at 2:45. I showed management my confirmation email from their system- no apology- no "oh this is our fault" nothing. And zero "well for your trouble we will give you a discount." Management basically mocked me. Sorry Dina I'll never know if you were any good. This spa needs actual good management- and customer service. The woman who dealt with me did a horrible job. No apology at all. Which is so upsetting because Mario Tricoci this happened to me once and they were lovely- apologized, the manager was so nice. My daughter and I had appointments for up-dos at 12 and 12:15. At 12:30, we hadn't been taken and no one had informed us of any issues. I had made my way to the front desk and they said they would find out what was happening. 12:45 my daughter was taken and I still had not. We were on a tight schedule and no-one seemed to care. I was finally taken at 12:55 and I had to leave in the next 10 minutes. I received no apology. I was taken by a stylist and just started curling my hair. My original stylist finally came over and told me about her previous client that had an OCD with cleanliness but again.. No apology. I came here this past Saturday with my sister because she had a gift card and was treating. I also desperately needed a hair trim. We walked in for our 8:45 a.m. appointment and they were just completing their staff meeting. It was a little awkward with everyone staring at us but one lady pulled away and offered us some hot coffee or tea which was nice. They then brought us to their waiting area tucked away in the back. When my stylist was ready, she examined my hair and provided good tips for hair/scalp health. I thought, "Great, this is going to go well!" Well, I was wrong...after she got comfortable, she started telling me random stories about her life. I guess I'm a good listener because she just kept going and going. Her stories included illegal activities and questionable parenting. It was early and I would have preferred small talk..or none at all. I asked for 3 inches off. I just needed a good trim. She did cut about 3 inches off the front but once I was done, I realized she cut about 6 inches from the back! I was a bit in shock but she stated that she wanted to make my hair even throughout. I can understand that but that's not the style I asked for. So why the 3 stars. Well, despite her cutting off more than what I asked for, she did a good job. And she provided me with funny stories to tell my friends later. I probably won't return. There has to be better places in the suburbs. read more

I recently had a no chip manicure at Avalon Salon and I have to say that Zanda is the best nail tech that I have had in YEARS! I have had many manicures and her attention to detail did not go unnoticed. Not only did my manicure last 2+ weeks, she was super sweet! The five stars are for her, not the salon. If you go here, GO SEE ZANDA!!! Forty dollars for a no chip manicure is pricey! The salon itself could use some updating and definitly needs a face lift! If the owner is going to charge those kind of prices they should really consider putting some thought into making the space more relaxing, professional and updated. Attention to details, like putting a large floor plant in a pot, rather then having it just sitting in a corner on the floor with it's plastic container that it came in, or a nice display for the no chip color options rather then them just being shoved into a cabinet would be a start. read more
