Plus, you're on the pier and you can't argue with that view. We tried the fish sandwich with coleslaw and cheese (for an extra charge). I'm told that adding the cheese makes it "island style." Ok, I'll go along with that. The kid got a corn dog. The sandwich was fresh and delicious. And you simply cannot mess up a corn dog so no complaints there, either. The clam chowder in a bread bowl was the star for me. I preferred that they hollowed out more of the bread bowl so my precious soup didn't spill off the sides... there was at least one spoonful worth's leaking out. The thick and rich chowder had a very pronounced clam/seafood flavor. Sadly, the fried fish was meh. The batter was eggy so it didn't adhere to the fish, and it came off like a second skin. It also wasn't very crispy. The french fries were standard thin fries, like McDonald's, but also not very crispy. My friend got the fried zucchini, which were succulent and tender on the inside. I saw 6 or 8 on tap + bottles in a cooler. I thought the fish & chips looked "run of the mill" when I looked at it but was glad to find that it tasted better than average. Service here was good & friendly. I enjoyed the locals sitting near me drinking beer and chatting. I don't know... It's not like I get much of a chance to visit Catalina. However, when an opportunity arose, I checked Yelp, bookmarked a few locations, crossed my fingers, and hoped for the best. With the sun shining; the ocean, beautiful; and a relaxing afternoon of cold beer and fresh fish & chips, what more could one hope for? And that's a great question, but the answer, sadly, is not so exciting. Like I wish the service had been more welcoming: it would have made up a bit for what the food lacked. I mean, how difficult is it to show some appreciation? I just wish the fish was a bit more substantial. (The pieces were tiny.) As well, like the fries (frozen, not made fresh), I suspect the same for the fish--another letdown. But this is what happens when you have high expectations, right? It's thick and buttery rich with flavor, with tender clam and perfectly simmered potatoes in every spoonful. We also ordered the fried calamari, expecting fried squid rings and tentacles; instead we got tender chunks of calamari steak, battered and deep fried to a light, golden, crispy doneness. Even their fries were memorably crisp and tender! The guys here work hard and deliver top notch service, from preparing the orders to making sure the locals (gulls!) aren't being bothersome! Avalon seafood was my last ditch effort for a good meal before leaving the island. I had the platter that came with fish, shrimp, calamari and scallops it was about $15.00. Most of it was good except for when I got to the scallops or was it the calamari...I couldn't chew it to save my life. It was like rubber! I enjoyed the ambiance and the parts I could eat. If seafood is rubbery it typically means it was cooked to long. If I were to go back I would just stick to the fish and shrimp. I would recommend bringing wet wipes especially when eating on the pier so you can clean up where you are going to sit and it comes in handy if your hands get greasy. The Fish and Chips are a 5.0 star, Chowder a 3.5 star and the "Sitting outside with the aggressive panhandling Seagulls" tables a 3.0 stars. The staff is the best and very friendly. One woman had a Seagull attack her food when she got up to throw away something and they replaced in gratis. Good on them! I can't blame the Seagull for wanting it as the fish is firm and the batter not heavy and thick like most places. Probably my favorite restaurant on the island! This place is on the pier, and has a great view of both the island and the water. Daiquiris and margaritas are only $6, and the food is decently priced. My friends love to get the swordfish here. Went here a couple of weeks ago during July 4th weekend. I found Miguel to be super nice and helpful, off all the restaurants I visited that weekend he provided the best service. I really enjoy their selection of seafood here, nothing fancy and most items are unhealthy/tasty deep fried. =D Bonus, I didn't know before but a sandwich baggie of fish food is sold here for just $1. If you are going snorkeling the fish food is a must, you will see so many more fish because of it. Just take care to sprinkle a little at a time since the fish really swarm and can bite at your fingers and toes. O_O! The quality of their fish and chips is great, tender juicy white fish. I found out that their tartar sauce is a good substitute to dip baby carrots in if no ranch was to be found. When ordering a beer make sure you stay within their seating boundaries, kinda strict on enforcing that policy. Don't know why many tourists treat Catalina like Vegas, no open containers of alcohol are allowed on the street okies? They don't even attempt to be slight inconspicuous and do the gangster brown bag! Seriously, just because you were recently on a boat doesn't mean you are suddenly in the high seas of international waters outside of jurisdiction. =p Tip: This is one of THE best places to watch the fireworks on the 4th while throwing back a few brewskis! What a joke! The worst experience on the island! I LOVE Fish & Chips! We went there yesterday and were disgusted by not only the food - but the service and the prices. I asked if the fish and chips was fresh cod and was so excited when they said yes - cause if it wasn't - I was going somewhere else. My friend wanted Calamari - and yes - they said this was also fresh. WOW - Not only was this as expensive as going to a nice restaurant - but it was more like BAIT! The "fresh" cod fish - was actually 3 small frozen fish sticks - the kind you find in ANY supermarket - and the "calamari" was NOT calamari - but 3 small deep fried pieces of Squid that looked and tasted frozen too, we both chose the Cole slaw side instead of the French fries - and it was just chopped cabbage with mayo! YUK. These 2 dishes with a drink cost just under $50!! YES - FIFTY DOLLARS! Even the portions were a joke not to mention the RUDE employees! When I went to pick up the "food" - I complained and they wouldn't keep the "food" and refund the money. I don't mind paying a lot for food - but I expect something decent for my money. We ended up going to Larry's Lua and eating there. These "positive" reviews are left by people who are family related or friend from the island. It is a pathetic tourist trap that should be avoided at all cost. Do yourself a favor - if you want to believe these lying reviews - stand there and see what comes out of the kitchen for the poor suckers who believed the reviews and you will RUN the other way.
