ok experience with my hair straight bob but went back twice for a pedicure. I believe it cost $50 which was IMO steep The water was not the right temperature. There was no massaging or hot towels like the other person next to me. They don't use clippers so my nails are all sticking out, and since they do file, they literally scraped me so hard I have scabs luckily the file was taken out of a plastic sleeve, so there's that also water never stayed in the tub. I found myself in a pinch today and needed a wash n style for an evening out and thought to give this place a try as it's convenient to my house. Come see Keller if you are looking for a hairstylist, she was great - conversational, friendly, efficient, upbeat and knowledgeable with Aveda products. Did I mention she can wash and style African-American natural hair - yes she can! I left happy and excited for my evening out and my hair looks fantastic!!! Came here hoping to find quality hair color service so I can stop doing it at home. NOPE. The student was actually great - but the instructor who told her what colors to mix - was all wrong, she didn't listen to what I asked for. I very specifically told both of them that I have been using a deep dark 2VV color, and that I want to avoid any chance of red at all costs. However, for some reason, the instructor created a blend of color that did indeed leave hot roots and much more of a reddish tint than I've had in years. Unreal. It seemed as though the student who was applying the color was also concerned as it went along, because it didn't look right. She seemed hesitant to question the instructor. The other problem with this place is the sinks where you wash out the color. They are awful. First of all, they have you in a laying down position, which makes no sense. It is not relaxing as it is touted to be, because you have to constantly lift your head up during the rinsing process. And the angle of the wash basin to my head was so off, I felt bad for the student. Not to mention, the sink was continually stopping up. She had to constantly turn off the water and wait for it to go down. This whole mess resulted in insufficient, washing and rinsing, leaving me with product in my hair, which was a mess once I got home. This was not a good experience. I'm supposed to go back and get a "free" service, but at this point, I don't trust them. read more

my hair was pretty in the end but my stylist was literally so aggressive and didnt talk the whole time. my scalp is in shambles and I literally shed multiple tears and said "ouch" multiple times while she was doing my hair because she was ripping and pulling so hard and she didn't care. she just wasn't very welcoming and was very quiet and seemed like she was rushing. and it was just such an excruciating experience ive truly never been in so much pain from going to what is normally a relaxing hair appt. she also had long gel nails and they kept tugging on my hair. my scalp has never been in so much pain. just upsetting because i spent almost $100 to go to hell and back for 4 hours straight read more

Student and instructors lack professionalism and work ethic, 10 year+ regular customer, but will never go back! Really enjoyed supporting students and Aveda initiatives over the years. I came here for a wax appointment and Shannon and Kate did my wax. They were so sweet and did a great job but the quality of the wax the school decides to use is so bad. The girls weren't able to get consistent clean strips because it would constantly break off. I'm frustrated to see that a school is choosing to use cheaper quality wax just to save money especially when it's painful for the clients and frustrating for the students. If they keep deciding to use this type of wax I will not be coming back, but if they decide to use better quality wax then I would totally come back. Once again Shannon and Kate did an excellent job but the school supplied them with shitty wax. read more

Went for an all over highlight. Wanted to be a golden blond from dirty blond. Was not toned at all and was left with a completely different color than what my stylist promised she could achieve and received extremely chunky and uneven highlights. Went back the next day to have a discussion on my dissatisfaction and was belittled and told I could never achieve the color in my reference photo when I used a reference photo of my own hair that I had previously done by a different aveda stylist. The manager I spoke to told me to "seek out a different salon" because they would not be able to help fix my hair in any way. Had to spend an extra $200 to fix all the bleeding, banding, and incorrect color. read more

I wish it were possible to award 0 stars, because AFI hasn't earned a single one. The Institute overbooks & upsells every day, the only purpose for students in the salon is to earn money for this business. As students, we are left 32:1 with absent minded, rude and ignorant, disdainful and uninterested educators. On evenings or on Saturdays, educators often disappear and students are left pacing and wandering the floor looking for our "supervision" When asking an educator for advice regarding a service, it should be expected that the student be answered - be shown an example - be taught a new lesson. What happens here is this: the educator suck's their teeth at you, gets loud and accuses you of not knowing what you're doing, and then finishes the service instead of educating. Of course we don't know things, of course we don't know how to do things, WE ARE STUDENTS. Educators often pick favorites and fraternize with them off clock and during the school day. Educators reading this should know, that we students know exactly everyone who is homophobic and racist in this establishment & we do not respect you. The educators bring their personal drama into school daily. Guest care employees and Educators alike often lie to avoid owning up to making mistakes on students schedule. This often results in students being suspended. when questions or concerns are raised to "administration" Student Services often ignores emails for weeks on end. Now, regarding the salon. Aveda is a great brand & a big part of the reason clients seek such ill informed and inexperienced stylists at the Institute. Clients should be aware of the following: there is only bare general housekeeping done; dusting and sanitizer ion simply doesn't occur here. In the bathrooms, the strange odor you mentioned during your service is actually coming from the standing water in the drains on the floor. The hot, wet towels your Esthetician places on your face and bare skin - they're washed in mold infested washing machines and tumbled in unserviced dryers which no longer blow hot air. future students: save your money & your mental health - do not attend this institute. clients: this place is disgusting and it's not the students fault. we sanitize all of our instruments and tools but the building, the water, the machines - it's disgusting and you shouldn't be spending money here. read more

I made an appointment for color and cut. I had been to another "school" before and had a great experience so I thought why not. Why not ever, again: there was no supervision what so ever even though several teachers were walking around. No one ever stopped to check in, guide, help or anything. She was left completely ALONE. When I voiced concerns then she went and got a teacher who was unhelpful and spent less than 60 seconds with the girl doing my hair. I left with a lopsided haircut, that was wayyy shorter than I asked for, tacky hair because it still had soap/conditioner in it and weird yellow color, not blonde. The teacher the student called over after I voiced that my hair didn't seem even made a couple of snips and COMPLETELY unhelpful and they just didn't care. At this point, I just said I had to go and didn't want them to do anymore damage. I'll wear it up and go to my regular persons recommendation until she is back from her leave of absence. Shame on me, this place is not worth it ever. read more

Completely botched my sister's hair. My sister went in for a simple dye with one of the student hairdressers...4.5 hours later left with botched hair, it now looks worst than it did before. On top of that the student hairdresser didn't put a cape on her so it ended up dying her nice white sweater and sweatpants. Even her face was dyed, took multiple hours to get off. My sister has been saving up her money and looking forward to this but instead leaves with botched hair and ruined clothes. When we contacted the manager she was not friendly at all, in any way. Regarding Aveda Fredric's in West Chester, what occurred today, 4/7/2021, with Garianne Colwell, is as follows: 1) Garianne cancelled today's appointment in person when I arrived. Why? When scheduling my appointment, she claims that I asked the scheduler if they could have a stylist skip their lunch on Saturday in order to squeeze me in and that is her reason for not honoring today's appointment nor any future appointments. 2) When scheduling, I had asked if they could make an exception and fit me in on Saturday so that I didn't have to take time off of work to come during the week. How this got misconstrued as me asking to have someone skip lunch is something I have no explanation for. 3) It was unfair (inconsiderate and lack of communication) to have me drive 30 min there today, cancel in person with no phone call, and for me to drive 30 minutes home. 4) My response was that this seems solvable. I'm here. I need my haircut. I have an appointment. I wouldn't ask anyone to skip their lunch on Saturday. That wasn't something said. 5) Nope, Garianne said and bulldozed me. From my perspective, if you could care less regarding kindness of instructors, this is the right fit. The students at Aveda Fredic's in West Chester, OH are kind hearted. Mom and I have fun going. We enjoy meeting the students, hearing how they decided that they want to be stylists and were surprised to hear by many that they would have quit Fredric's Aveda early in their program if tuition was easily refundable. Per the student stylists, the primary reason is their instructors. Per the students, many fear certain instructors. I have been there many times with my mom as a girls day out. We enjoy going because the students are fun to talk to. Today was different. I felt offended by their lead instructor, named Garianne Colwell. She is short tempered and lacks insight. I encountered this and left feeling stunned. Call me to resolve. Per the students, Garianne Colwell is the snottiest and least favorite instructor. She is unapproachable and doesn't make eye contact. She behaves as a queen, meaning that she has little time or energy for you. Being in her presence for even a short period of time leaves folks (and left me feeling upset) not wishing to return or be there around anyone remotely similar in nature to her. If looks and attitude could kill! Bad all around, negative personality! It was disappointing to meet her for the first time. It's very apparent that she lacks leadership skills, professionalism and problem solving skills. read more

One of my smarter friends told me at Frederick's years and years ago, just as I was getting tired of spending upwards of $150 for my monthly hair cut and touch-up. I've been a regular ever since. Certainly, you're being taken care of by student stylists, so you're not going to have the same experience you'd have with a graduate stylist at a regular salon, but I regard the extra time it takes at Frederick's (generally between 2.5 to 3 hours) to be a fair trade-off for the ridiculously lower investment I'm making overall, to look as good as if I spent the big bucks. I noticed a Yelp reviewer mention that her student seemed to have no supervision...I can't imagine that being the case. The students who have taken care of me *know* they need to have an instructor check in with them at least three times during my service - once at the beginning to make sure the student knows exactly what I want, another to talk through the planned cut, and a third to double-check the cut and to make sure I'm happy at the end. In the cases where "my" student is literally weeks from her graduation, I've noticed that she may skip that middle check-in, but seriously - there's no question that these students are being supervised. I've also noticed that some reviewers talk about negative experiences there - I absolutely noticed a decline in service and quality starting immediately after they had to close down during the pandemic and for about 18 months afterward...but in the past year or so, I feel like things are back on track. read more

The girl who did my hair talked to her neighboring stylist about how she wanted to throw her blow dryer against the wall because she was so frustrated and about annoying it was to be there. I know most of the reviews here are about the salon but mine is going to be about the school. The first semester was great. The instructors went above and beyond to make sure we knew the theory and what little practical we could do. If that was the entire time my review would be much more pleasant but the second semester was where it fell apart. The primary instructor during the second semester was very clearly going through the motions. She would read theory chapters at us at breakneck speed and ignore any request to slow down or clarify what she was reading. This culminated with her breaking the law and leaving students without an instructor. We got back from dinner break and she was gone. I bring this up to the student success team and I am expelled! Aveda West Chester has turned into an ITT clone of get asses in classes. The surface is polished and refined but it is rotting on the inside. I'm sure there are some people that could handle the office politics but why would you want to? Aveda is a name that generally brings prestige but this campus fails to treat their students with the respect they deserve. read more

This place is a joke. Second time I've tried to schedule appointments that were cancelled with no excuse what so ever. The first time I received a call from a very rude receptionist the day of who insisted I had to reschedule with no reason why. Found out later when I insisted on talking to a a manger about the extremely rude individual that a bunch of students did not show up. Second time came in for my appointment and they had no appointment on the books even though I showed an email and text confirmation. Upon further talking the receptionist stated that a bunch of students had not show up today so they did not have any openings for later on. I'm going to assume they just started deleting appointments since they did not have any stylists. Calling is a waste of time as I've tried calling multiple times in both occasions to ask questions and always goes to voicemail mail on both occasions. The receptionist this time said online booking is unreliable so should call to make an appointment instead. This place is a waste of time and mismanaged. Spend the extra money and go to a real salon. 2 for 2 extremely frustrating experiences and dealing with either rude or incompetence. read more

I am a current student who was very excited to attend Aveda. You hear of Aveda's fantastic reputation and education and for how much it costs you expect it. But Aveda Fredrics severely disappoints its students and clients. Basic needs at Aveda are not met. The Educators do not help the students, when asked they tell you to "YouTube it". The sinks for washing guests hair are constantly broken or clogged. The school smells of a strange oder due to the lack of sanitation. The school has black mold which the guests know nothing about. We have not received all our tools that we paid for and are penalized for it. The attitude of the teachers makes the work environment unbearable and impossible to learn in. We have been briefly taught about subjects and then degraded if we can't perform them. I would not recommend Aveda Cincinnati to anyone. read more

I am currently a student here, and I am very disappointed with my education here at Aveda Fredric's. Going into the program I thought I was going to get a great education and that I was going to a organized and reputable school. This has clearly not been the case. I am towards the middle of my program and we have barely learned anything about textured hair which is upsetting. I was really hoping that I would be able to learn how to do all types of hair, but so far that has not happened. The educators also have very poor communication skills amongst eachother and with the students about some of the school guidelines. This leaves us students very confused. Every educator seems to have a completely different answer when you ask them what we are allowed and what we aren't allowed to do. It's annoying being told something is okay by one educator, and then getting in trouble by another educator saying it's not okay. There are also multiple problems with the facility itself. There is black mold in the laundry room and they keep procrastinating on getting it clean. The sinks also have such a hard time draining and it's frustrating when I am with a client and am standing there trying to get the sink to drain. I do not recommend going here unless you want to waste your money. read more

I decided I wanted to treat myself after a recent car accident, and booked an entire day of services at the Aveda Institute. I booked a 90 minute facial, a 60 minute massage, and a manicure. I even spoke to the person who took the appointment about being able to order lunch in, since I was determined to indulge myself, and the girl purposefully spaced out my appointments to give me time to take breaks (which I appreciated). The evening before my appointment I received an automated message reminding me about the appointment, and I happily drove the 30 minutes out to the Aveda institute the next morning. I was approximately 9 minutes late for my 9:45am appointment, but the young ladies at the desk were kind enough to get me checked in, brought me a cup of tea, and directed me to the seating area. I literally sat there, completely ignored for almost an hour. At the 45 minute mark, a woman came over and asked if I was ready for one of my services, and I asked if I'd still have time to do everything since we were starting so late. She looked at her paperwork and realized a mistake had been made...because her paperwork showed my services didn't start until 11:30am, AND I wasn't booked for a massage! It turns out Aveda hasn't actually trained the new class on massages, and there's no one out there to actually DO the massage, so that service was cancelled and my entire day re-arranged (now with no lunch break!) without my knowledge. A supervisor came to apologize for the mixup, explained I received a message the previous evening (which was an automated reminder for what I'd originally booked), and offered me a $10 discount on my facial, but by then I was done. As I picked up my things to leave (after more than an hour at Aveda with nothing to show for it but two cups of tea), the woman who was supposed to do my facial apologized and asked me to come back another time, to which I responded, "Oh, I won't be coming back here." And I wont. When I made it to my car, angry as hell, I did what I should have done in the first place: I just called Woodhouse Day Spa and booked a facial, massage, and mani/pedi (a pedi, mind you, that the Aveda Institute couldn't have done anyway because they don't do gel/shellac on toes!!). Sure, it'll cost me more, but you absolutely get what you pay for. I know I did at Aveda. read more

I've been coming off & on for several years & I always have good experiences. They are students, so expect it to take 2-3x longer than going to a licensed stylist. I have super curly hair & it gives some a hard time but I feel it's my duty to get them accustomed to new textures. I get my highlights, haircuts & straightened hair all at the institute. Other than a student not knowing how to really get my hair straight & instructor going through it again, I've always left happy. Today was the happiest I've been. My stylist name was Ali & she was AWESOME!!! Personable but didn't talk your ear off & most importantly, she did a fabulous job! I went in for a haircut & thermal & it was about 2.5 hrs. Like I said, I have super curly hair. She used the smooth infusion line & it really worked. She also didn't skimp on the products & it really worked. My hair has never been this straight after a student has straightened it. She even added a little curl to the bottom to show off my layers.
