Setting an appointment was easy and quick. I did a wash and hairstyle and to get my makeup done. You do have to find street parking and unfortunately for me, the park was blocked off that day for an event so I had to park at 2 hour parking. The students were super understanding of me having to leave mid session to situate my car. The hair service could've been better and I was low key salty, but I got what I paid for! The first time I went in it was great, now I came back to add some more highlights and I specifically said I still wanted my natural brown visible just with more blonde highlights, now basically my entire head is different shades of blonde, yellow tones, silver, it just looks a mess. And the top of my head? My natural brown is gone, it's orange/red! I was able to come back to get it fixed and I trusted them yet again, just for my hair to still be orange/red and look even worse! I truly believe this was instructor error, as the student seemed knowledgeable, and did great on my hair the first time with advice from the one male instructor. Now all I want is my hair to be one simple color, and I'm stuck paying 300+ dollars and waiting 2 weeks+ with hair I feel so ugly with for somewhere else to fix this mess. I am very upset! read more

This is as a terrible experience! I don't say that lightly. I really had to give some time to think on this. I don't normally write negative reviews. It really has to be bad. In fact this is my third one and I'm 48. So, that should tell you something. The woman cut 5 inches when it was supposed to be 1.5. Then she started giving my layers real short without asking. I caught her and she went to get her teacher. I have been trying to grow my hair out for three years! I had told her that. The color was also off. Not even close to what I wanted. I held back tears until I got home. This was November. It's March. Even with the extra supplements..one inch. I hate my hair everyday. The woman IHAD TO PAY said well you can come back. Great. What are they supposed to do? Glue my hair back on?! No I'm never going back! I suggest if you don't have the money don't even go there for a trim. read more

Previous students did pull my hair just a bit but noticed my discomfort and were then more gentle. Just be aware that your experience here may not be consistent. Their student emissions department is absolutely a a joke. They were beyond disorganized and dysfunctional. Their financial aid person I believe her name was Jasmine had no idea what she was doing or if you asked from help she said she didn't know just to read it. We were even told just to guess. Been a fan of Aveda products for a long time- they carry nature inspired products that are also environmentally conscious. I usually get my hair find here but they do have a selection of cosmetology and esthetician services. Their prices are super reasonable especially due to the use of high end products and they are a teaching program. They also have a retail store and usually run sales on some products from time to time. At this appointment, the service was awesome ( in all the time I have come here, only had one not so good experience). The facility is clean. Parking can be a bit challenging - but worth the annoyance. There is a park across the way that sometimes has some unhoused people that can you make you nervous leaving the salon after an appointment at 8 pm... but there is usually a security guard outside and enough people traffic that does not make you feel unsafe. Went in for a cut and style. They burned my scalp with boiling water and the teacher tore out half my hair because he kept brushing from root to ends instead and using all his force. They dry brushed my curly hair and blow dried it which made it look awful. I immediately went home to fix my hair because they did my hair so bad I was embarrassed. I never get headaches but I left here with a headache and a mild burn on my scalp. It's not worth it. I'm still in a decent amount of pain. read more

I had a really nice experience at the Aveda Institute! My husband had some work to do, so that left me with time to kill. The school is short walk from a couple of hotels. That is so convenient! The reception desk was very helpful and found me a spot right away. The instructor was smart and assigned my operator a helper. That's team work! They seem to stop listening to customers over 50-55. Had nothing but great cuts (even though they would take 3-4 hours even on short hair!) but last 3 visits have been a nightmare for me and my curly hair. 1) they don't listen or even pay attention when you bring pictures. 2) asking for just a trim of the same style you have, ends up in a completely different cut. Best part is, if you miss a mistake until you get home and start messing with the style yourself, they charge you for a whole new cut to fix their own mistakes. Supervisors just gaslight you when you try to point out they just chopped off one side so much there is no way they can give you the haircut you asked for. I guess they think once you're a senior, your voice doesn't matter. I'm done. Have had way better cuts at lower rated schools. Now that is sad. read more

What a nice experience I had at Aveda. My favorite salon was just getting too pricey for me so I decided to look elsewhere and remembered that a former coworker went to Aveda on occasion so I called. Called on a Monday and had an appointment for Tuesday! Yay! Staff and students are friendly and I got compliments on my cut. Because the students have their educators right there, I feel the margin for error is small. The student first talks to you about what you want, tells you how they'd like to proceed, goes to their educator to go over their plan and then goes to work. The educator comes to you when the student is done cutting to check all their lines/cut/etc so if there is something wrong, it can be corrected right there. Once finished with the styling, the educator comes back to check in with you. I like the process. I'll be coming back for sure. read more

I went in for a hair cut and partial highlights and only the highlights were completed. The highlights were orange and chunky. I asked for a blending highlights for grey coverage. Due to the student taking 4 hours on application, a haircut was not done since they needed to close. The instructors checked in once the whole time. They washed my hair and let dye in my forehead. No blow dry, nothing! I emailed them to let the Campus Director know about my experience and after much back and forth they offered a haircut. They didn't want to do my coloring and the director kept telling me a professional needed to do it. They gave me a check for 100$ but to get to this point. I tolerate gaslighting and unfair treatment. At one point the director asked me to not return for coloring to Aveda. I have been here before and never experienced no check ins from staff. I did get my hair corrected elsewhere and the stylist struggled with the correction and told me that something other than bleach was used and it was difficult to get a consistent lift from my hair. Please don't go here until leadership changes. Don't gamble with your hair. read more

I've been getting my hair cuts here regularly since they moved to this downtown location and had good experiences up until recently. Aside from the occasional uneven trim and slow service, I've had no complaints with the students or services. My gripe is with the front. I scheduled a cut and color for a week out with their latest appointment being 1pm. I told them that may be too early and the girl on the phone said if something changes just call them. The morning of I give them a call and the guy on the phone says to change the appointment this late they'll have to charge me half the fee of the service, and that I was told this. I was not told this and he said well it's policy. I told him he should let his front desk know that and he rudely replied "I'm the front desk and we tell people that." The person I had talked to before was obviously not the same person, but he didn't care to listen and reiterated that I'm gonna get charged and hung up. Nice facility, friendly students, but extremely rude front desk. I will not be returning. read more

These are students learning a trade. They pair you with a student depending on where they are in training and your needs. The instructors keep an eye on the progress while they cut color perm or style your hair. I got a hair cut for $19 and they did just as I asked. Everyone was very nice and professional. For guys haircuts this isn't the spot unfortunately, came out lopsided with half my hair cut by a professional teacher and the other half looking a mess. I'll have to get it cut again soon. I'm giving this a two star only because I went the day before and received a body wrap that was fairly good. But when I went the next day for a hair cut and style, it was the worst. I know that you get what you pay for and it is a school where they are learning. But I have decided that I don't want them to learn on me. I paid for the Advanced Hair Treatment. What I got was so inadequate. and when I checked out, the girl at the register said "wasn't the scalp massage the best?" Was I supposed to get one? I didn't. She only patted on the scalp treatment and didn't even rub it into my scalp. I only wanted her to layer the back of my hair and not touch the front. Not good. And at one point I had to take the brush and blow dryer out of her hands and do it myself because she wasn't even doing that correctly. I could go into further detail but there isn't enough writing space. Needless to say, I walked out with the worst haircut of my life. (and I'm 75) Thank goodness hair grows out. Customer service and client communication is non-existent here. I made an appointment to get a 90 min facial. Last time I went to Aveda, it was located at U of A. I live way on the east side, and drove all the way out only to find that the location had been changed to downtown. I wouldn't have made an appointment in the first place had I known that it was now located downtown. Who wants to deal with the awful traffic and ZERO parking? It's the worst possible place you could put it. The exact opposite of relaxation. You would think that my location would be saved to some kind of client profile, or they'd at least have notes on me that would alert them that the last time I came in was at the U of A location. They didn't communicate to me AT ALL at any point during the booking OR confirmation process that the location had been changed. I called them before my appointment time to let them know I'd be a little late due to their lack of communication. Nobody answered the phone, and I left a voicemail. I really tried to make it downtown. Between multiple road closures and there being absolutely nowhere to park, I wound up being about 15 mins late for the appointment. Nobody called me back until I had literally JUST pulled up. Their call wasn't to see where I was at or check if I needed help finding the hidden place. They called to let me know that they were not only cancelling the appointment, but charging me for it. They didn't even offer to still do my facial minus the 15 minutes that I was late (due to their lack of communication). They just flat out robbed me of my money, time, and gas and told me to pound sand. The girl on the phone had the nerve to tell me, "Well next time you should call." As if there will be a next time after all that! And I DID call! What's particularly disturbing for me is that these aren't even licensed estheticians. These are students that are supposed to be learning skills to take with them into their careers. Spa services should always be high touch concierge. People pay a LOT of money to do these types of services, and should be treated like royalty. Aveda is clearly teaching these students that it's ok to ignore the phones and provide poor customer service. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. BTW this was all after they rescheduled my appointment at the last minute. AND it still shows their location as Main Gate Square here on Yelp. read more

The receptionist asked if I have ever been there before I gave her my number and she ruddy stated you had an appointment with us before . It's a teaching environment. The students use a worksheet to interview the client about their hair care needs. Then begin the process. I wear a modified bob, difficult cut with my fine straight hair, the students do a good job. The instructor comes in and goes over my cut and fine tunes while instructing the students. Some students are better than others depending on the skill level. I love my cut, the students try very are to make their client happy. The instructors are phenomenal. They do need to improve their scheduling procedures as I had wanted two appointments at the same time instead I got two, one after the other, my grand daughter and I were at the salon for hours. read more

Went in for a hair cut and a single color dye. Student was nice but it looked like she was struggling with my long hair, took long to add the dye which I understand it takes time. When she washed my hair, she left dye on half my head and didn't clean off the excess that got past my hairline. When she went on to brush my hair, she was struggling, but not a single instructor offered to help her or offer tips (you can clearly see she was struggling and there was a lot of hair pulling). When she finally went on to the cut, again she was having trouble and left it uneven specially around the face framing layers. She dried my hair a little and asked an instructor to come check her work, instructor was having trouble going through my hair and told the student to call her back once my hair was all dry (took forever and wasn't completely dry). Finally when she "finished" she called another instructor to check her work, he didn't even touch my hair to check the hair cut. He just said oh it looks greats. You could tell the front of my hair was uneven. I felt bad for the student, after over hearing her say to another student she knows it's good but still has to have the instructor check her work. At this point I blamed the instructors not the student. I had to go to a different salon to get my hair fixed and they had to cut another inch to even out the length and there was a whole lot of dye washed off my hair. I had high expectations since there were some good reviews, but won't be going back or recommending. read more

I returned to the Aveda Institute for a haircut. I surprised myself by going but I recently had my hair colored (by my long time go-to gal) but still needed a haircut! So I thought for $15, I would give it another shot. In my previous review I was pretty irritated regarding a not so stellar coloring treatment my hair received. I wanted to update my review because today I left Aveda happy. I had a very nice student cut and style my hair and do an awesome job! I showed her a photo of what I wanted and she did her best to achieve it. The instructor was helpful and very nice too! I recommend checking them out when you have time to spend getting your haircut because it does take longer than most salons. However, it's important to remember that it's a school. read more

I had to write another review! Again, Katie R. had the magic touch for my hair. came in for my second session (trying to go blonde). she left my hair feeling healthy, shiny and looking even better! Edit: The instructor contacted me and left a voicemail the afternoon I left this review. His tone was bored and it was clear he called because he had to. I see the manager left a comment saying "there must have been an understanding" on my Google review, which is exactly what I asked myself when I was there, which is why before leaving I found Mr. Frisbie and asked "How exactly did this happen?" He replied: "I honestly don't know." Who would honestly come back to allow you to fix your mistake after your actions have made it so blatantly clear that you just don't care? Why would I trust the same individuals I'm leaving this review for not to just shave my head completely on the second visit? The only misunderstanding that occurred was on the part of whomever is failing to supervise your instructors. It astounds me that you can be this quick about replying to online reviews, yet when I was in the actual salon crying and looking desperately around for you to help me, no one was there until AFTER my hair had been ruined and my trust had been lost. There are tons of incredibly talented stylists out there who would die for the opportunity to work for Aveda, and yet you continuously employ staff who don't have care for customer service, which is evident in so many reviews below mine. Shea Miley does an AMAZING job! She has the most comforting hands of any esthetician I've ever been to. It's like she has a natural positive energy in her that you can just feel while she's working on you. I've been to her several times now. Happy for her that she will be graduating and I will follow her wherever she ends up working. Also, the Institute is clean, welcoming, comfortable, and calming. Everyone is very kind and friendly.
