I went to Aveda Vicara in El Segundo last week with really high hopes because I've always had great experiences with Aveda salons in the past. Unfortunately, this experience was incredibly disappointing. I showed the first stylist multiple reference photos of what I wanted, but she ended up adding a very dark root color to my already lightened hair, which was the complete opposite of the look I asked for. After expressing my concerns, the salon did have another stylist step in to help correct it, which I appreciated, although I waited nearly two hours in between. The second stylist made me feel much more comfortable and did improve the situation, but I still left unhappy with my hair overall. The correction consisted of using a color remover on the roots and applying toner to the rest of my hair, and I was charged $265 for it. At the end of the day, my hair looked better than what the first stylist did but still nowhere near what I originally asked for or envisioned. I'm leaving this review because I think communication and transparency are incredibly important, especially with color services. What upset me most was not just the outcome, but the way the situation was handled overall. I understand that corrections can take time and effort, but if I was going to be charged $265 for a corrective service after my hair was initially mishandled, that should have been clearly communicated to me beforehand. I truly wanted to love this salon and leave feeling taken care of, but unfortunately I left feeling disappointed, uncomfortable, and unhappy with the overall experience. read more

Vicara Salon has become my go-to hair salon in SoCal which says a lot considering I spent YEARS only getting my hair cut when I went home to Buffalo, NY. As you can see in my previous review, I had finally taken the plunge and got a local trim after a friend recommended Vicara at The Point in Manhattan Beach and I guess a couple years later, I'm glad I did. The salon is clean, airy, and generally welcoming (depending who's working the front desk) but the free parking at The Point is a bonus in the South Bay. Every visit I've had has been good - from the shampoo to the cut to the blowout. I savor every second because, honestly, I still feel I am in and out a little too quickly for the price. They use Aveda products, which I love, and I've absolutely spent more money than planned on shampoo and conditioner while I'm there. Every stylist I've had has been good - skilled, friendly, and patient. I think I finally have a regular now, though I forgot her name, despite asking her 10,241,029 questions during my last visit. I let my hair grow out in the winter and get it cut at the beginning and end of summer, and he always does a great job! My hair always feels so nice, and looks so good after an appointment. I have so many issues with the woman at the front desk: 1. I called asking to book with a master or master 2, and got booked with the only senior stylist on the list at the time. 2. When I called back trying to change it, I got put on hold for like 5 - 10 mins at a time a couple times. If you've ever been here, you know the front desk is never that busy. 3. She then said that the stylist had been promoted to master, but the website hadn't been updated. I said I wanted someone listed as a master or above on the website, and her response was "Ok why don't you give me YOUR list since you're going by the website." I listed all the people that I would want to get an appointment with and she said no for each of them one by one. So none of them were available that day, but you still wanted me to read the entire list? 4. When I did finally get my haircut, the booking deposit wasn't applied to it. read more

I had an amazing experience with Janelle. I've struggled with taking care of and styling my hair for as long as I can remember. My hair is fine but wavy/curly, and whenever I tried to wear it natural, it would look frizzy/dry. Went in for a blow out and toner. I came in with blonde/caramel highlights on my brunette base and said I would just want to slightly tone the warmth out. She said she understood but I should have known better as she was a new stylist. I left with hair COMPLETELY DARK LEVEL 5. Could not even see my highlights, my money piece almost looked green in sunlight. She said she wanted me to get my moneys worth and not do slightly. I was furious. Manager was not there, I didn't trust her to touch my hair again. I called later and left a message with the gentleman at the front desk for the manager to call me. He said she would and I NEVER got a call. I asked to speak to the stylist and he said he would talk to her - and came back on to say it washes out over 4-5 washes so just wash it. I got the worst haircut I've ever had at this place. The stylist thinned out my hair without asking me and she gave me the ugliest haircut I've ever seen. I was so sad, then she refused to fix it. I have a round face, with curly hair, that I have always worn straightened out because in my 54 years on this planet, I have never found a stylist who gave me the cut for my face and curls that I was happy with. Until today! I had a consult with Janelle, and I fell in love with her instantly. I made an appointment and had my cut today, I left feeling like a million dollars. What I loved the most with her was her approach to my hair. She worked with what she had, she didn't try to sell me an idea that wasn't mine, she didn't dream up her own version of what I should do with my hair, and she didn't once try to sell me a line of products to make my hair work. I wanted bangs, but as we got to that stage of the cut and she experienced my struggle with my hair, she advised against it, and let the idea of bangs slide. My daughter was referred to a stylist there for a particular haircut that the referent had. Additionally she took a photo of the style. She paid for cut and style and the stylist blew out her hair after the cut rather than styling it the way my daughter asked for. Instead she assured my daughter that once she washes it, she can add product and style it as the model in the photo. Why didn't she just style it as my daughter requested? Why blow it out? I'm a curly haired girl and this review is for Janelle. I have fine, thinner curly hair that is extremely prone to frizz and after a brief stint with The Curly Girl Method book and some Deva Curl products, I went back to my old ways of dealing with my hair like it's straight, including getting my haircut by stylists who only know how to cut straight (wet) hair. After my last wonky hair cut, I said enough! I dragged my feet for almost 2 years, every now and again trying to find a curly hair stylist (let alone in South Bay!), finally catching a review on Yelp for Janelle at Vicara. Janelle did not disappoint! She retaught me how to take care of my hair in a more manageable way, she shared a bunch of products with me that I can try out that are travel sized so no more breaking the bank with products that don't work out, and she gave me such a beautiful cut!!! I'm so disappointed to give this review! I went into the salon this weekend for a trim and asked the stylist to give me an undercut. She seemed uncertain so I asked a couple times whether that's something she's familiar with and know how to do. We even looked at pictures together so we were on the same page...and this is what I got. I couldn't see how uneven and utterly not an undercut it was until I got home and showed off to my roommate that I got to see what it really looked like back there. Customer service is abhorrent!! I have been a customer for over 10 years and when I tried booking I was told I had to leave a deposit. I asked for them to check with a manager before I booked and was told that they couldn't hold the spot. I said that it was unfortunate to treat a long time customer this way... The woman then said she would hold the spot and would ask the manager to waive the fee since their card reader wasn't working. The next day at 6:27pm I received a call from a different woman whom was incredibly rude and she said they would charge or cancel the appointment. I told her to just cancel. Well, then she said she was going to charge because the appointment wasn't cancelled on time and that I was being rude and she wasn't going to speak to me any longer. OMG!!! The whole conversation was insane!!! Vicara was not accurate regarding their policy, they did not provide any service, they bullied, lied, and emotionally abused me and charged $50 for absolutely nothing. read more

Kevin is an absolute hair color genius! He is extremely talented, attentive, patient, kind, and professional. If you are looking to change/correct your color, look no further. Kevin provided practical feedback prior to starting my coloring process, took his time, was gentle/didn't damage my hair, and was very transparent the entire time. To provide some context, during quarantine I was desperate for some color (salons were closed) and ended up doing a self-dye-job (bad idea), which over time, turned into a not-so-lovely burnt orange/copper mess. I recently moved back to the area and didn't have a stylist, but Kevin happened to be available during my only free time. I decided to book with him (3/28/21) despite having never met him. Kevin is a hair magician! I have not had my hair bayalage in over 14 months but since getting fully vaccinated, I wanted to get it done again to treat myself. I didn't do anything to my hair during the pandemic other than two haircuts, as it grows pretty long and thick pretty quickly. First, a shoutout to the rest of the salon staff. Everything was extremely smooth from the check in process on- you're asked to wash your hands and then sit socially distanced in the waiting area. Everyone was super nice and welcoming! When the appointment started with Kevin he asked to see a picture of what I wanted and I showed him a picture from my last bayalage. He took one look and said he could make it better, so I trusted him and he did! Compared to what I remember of my last bayalage, Kevin seemed to be far more detailed, precise yet artistic in the way he approached it. The toner, wash and mini scalp massage was also a delightful treat. After everything was said and done, the last bonus was that I had my hair curled for the first time in probably over five years. I could not believe how it looked, and how much the new hair made me feel beautiful and confident for the rest of the day. I wanted to get some balayage done, so I booked an appointment with Kevin, since he told me he had done balayage plenty of times. I showed him some pictures to show examples of colors I like. Throughout the process, Kevin was detail-oriented and focused. He kept his mask on the whole time, so I felt very safe even though I spent a few hours at the salon. He was friendly and I felt very relaxed. I personally think he made my hair look better than the pictures I showed him. This was the first time I got my hair dyed and Kevin was very informative and helpful with letting me know what kind of shampoo I should use to maintain the color and made suggestions for when I should come back for toning. I'm definitely coming back to Aveda Vicara salon and Kevin when new ideas for hair color come to mind. Kevin's work never ceases to amaze me. I was a bit brassy w roots grown. I showed her the Pinterest inspo pic to bring my roots down, more cool toned and an ashy brown. She's doing my highlights and I noticed her bleaching to my roots and she said "o no the colors will melt to the brown" I said uhhh ok. Bleach and adding my base color. I saw my hair in the mirror and MAN I HAD HIGHLIGHTS TO MY ROOTS.. I just sat there quietly as she washed my hair. Move back to my seat. She finished drying and my hair was. So. Silver and Platinum blonde.. W strands of brown hair. She kept playing it off like no it's bc you're not used to ashy from brassy hair. NO. I said I wanted to bring my roots down and all the tones I wanted were brown. She went to curl my hair and blow drying w brush. She starts to curl and realizes oopsie it's not on. Turns it on and she's like "meh let's just burn your hair with even more heat w the blow dryer while that heats up". See the photos for yourselves. If she forgot the inspo pic, completely fine. But she didn't even bother to ask. She didn't even once say "okay it is way brighter.. let's fix it with xyz". It took me showing my rbf and saying it's too bright for her to take action. Not good client retention skill. But She did have kind courtesy of not charging me full price but we had to tone my hair twice after all the bleach and dye. The layers were perfectly framed for my face and I had so much beautiful volume. The bayalage color was so beautifully designed, I didn't know my dark hair could have that level of dimension. Men: Underwhelming. Large factory feeling salon that charges double a going rate for bad haircut. I walked the employee through what I didn't want and got exactly what I specifically said I didn't want! Now my scalps visible, I have a white line around the bottom of my hairline all around my neck and simply put the hair is not cut professionally as it's longer where it needs not be. I could've gone to the barber and gotten this hair cut for a 3rd of this l price. Th3 fees these people are charging for a bad haircut just put me over the edge and pissed me off. Hard pass.
