First of all, you need to read my review dated 10/25/09. OK........with that said, Avenue 5 invited me to come back and have my highlights redone. My students name was Marilyn M. She was AWESOME and fixed the problem. My highlights look like I paid big bucks for them. I also had my hair cut as well which also turned out great. I was very pleased and everyone was really nice. They comped my highlights this visit since it was a "redo" and my hair cut was 7 bucks. Can't beat that with a stick. I will definitely come back, and I am looking forward to a facial next. I've been calling daily for 3 days now trying to make an appointment. No one answers nor do they return messages. I've got a banquet to go to in Austin the last Saturday of January and would LOVE to get my hair done here. Several other ladies want to get theirs done as well. Avenue Five offers a wonderful service to many clients at reduced prices while their students get to practice their taught skills on the clients. They also offer monthly specials that are very attractive to those that can work within their guidelines. I requested to purchase a "special" for a massage. I requested a specific date in the near future. I was first told that date was already booked up and then told that the special was only for this month but that this Saturday was also booked. If they can't accommodate you now or in the near future what kind of "SPECIAL" could this be. From a business perspective this is a very poor decision. The person making these decisions does couldn't possibly have a marketing/sales background. read more

I usually don't leave reviews but I had such a great experience here that I wanted to share. It was my first time here and the service was great, from the reception to the facial itself. I had the hydrating facial with Lauren G. She included shoulder, neck, and hand massages in between treatments. They were so relaxing that I fell asleep multiple times during the session. :) My skin felt very hydrated, but light at the same time. The session ran approximately 1 hour but the whole thing only cost $30. I rebooked, this time for a microderm treatment, on the same day. Definitely would recommend to anyone! read more

After moving to the Austin area I had been driving back to my hometown because I was unable to find a hair stylist that is up to my standards for a decent price. I just received a cut/color from EMBER at Avenue Five. After talking for a short time about what I wanted, she instantly got to work and got it exactly right! I normally go to a salon and they style my hair for me to go home and wash all the product (aka gunk) out. She did it just the way I like it and showed me tips on how to do it at home. She was very knowledgeable on hair products and what I should be using for my hair. To sum it all up- Great service and GREAT price. read more

Loved it. I admit I was totally skeptical because I pretty pick on who does my hair. I have naturally thick, coarse hair (African American textured hair). I am between Brazilian blowout hair appointments. So I decided to get just the Global Keratin Deep Conditioning and hair flat ironed. My roots have major growth, but now they are smooth, my hair shiny, and silky. Never thought I would be able to get my hair done for such a good deal. Came to Avenue 5 for a burgundy balayage and impressed is an understatement. First off, I have virgin hair and was afraid to go to a school like this for my first time getting color. However, Ashlyn made me feel really comfortable as she was confident in her abilities. I luckily had both her and Camille to work on my hair which made the process go much smoother and quickly. It did take a while, as they had to first bleach certain sections and then put the toner in, but I am so satisfied with the result. I will absolutely be back in the future to see both Ashlyn and Camille. read more

What a difference a few months and a different student makes! First off, yes, I understand this is a school. Students learn in different ways and show expertise in varying services. However, when a student claims to be graduating in a week, I expect him/her to be comfortable and knowledgeable with very basic techniques. As I witnessed duing my first visit, the instructors confirm the student's assessment at consultation, give advice and sometimes jump in to assist w/ complicated cuts or services but instructor Terri practically executed my entire basic cut, and saved the day at that! Nothing crazy here. simply 4-5 inches cut off to sitting at the shoulder, no blunt cut, layers, movement. The male student seemed confident and assured (this soon turned into self-centered) while discussing the procedure w/ the first instructor. (it was shift change right at my appt time) During the shampoo, his basin-side manner was a bit rough around the edges, including cold water. Back at the chair he seemed overly cautious about cutting off the length. Once the actual layers began, he needed instruction on which direction to hold the hair to make the cut, then asked the instructor to stay put to make sure he got it right on the next attempt. That's when I knew we weren't in Kansas anymore, Toto. Not good. This continued until Terri got more info from me, found out I asked for layers vs looking like I'm wearing a cardboard box on my head, and proceeded to show him more techniques (still pretty basic stuff), finishing the cut herself. She kept telling the student "it's the State Board cut". The cut worked out fine thanks only to her! While I'm not familiar with whether a student can be "held back" and placed in a remedial class or they are released w/ a diploma simply for completing X # of hours and it's all up to the Board, I can't comprehend how this person is one week from graduation with the "skills" he has. It's one thing to ask a question to confirm your actions but this was a complete lack of knowledge. Maybe since he made it clear he prefers to be a colorist since "that's where the real $ is", he couldn't care less about cuts. The upside is haircuts to me are the equivalent of a massage so for 1 3/4 hours I was, for the most part, in heaven. Avenue Five, there's sooooo much more I can say but it's really directed at the student's horrible attitude and commentary which included some about your staff but those are his own personal demons , not yours, since you will have him "out of your hair" soon. Ha....see what I did there?! But if you'd like more tidbits, I'd be happy to share. ****Update to update**** The owner and operations staff went above and beyond researching this review including meeting me in person at the school. This shows they take great pride in their business. They took a negative review and intend to use it as a teaching tool for future students. The "What Not To Talk About With A New Client" role play class should be highly entertaining! Chalk up the original experience as a bad match all around but the leadership team turned that frown upside down. Now THAT is outstanding customer service! read more

I am a former part-time esthetics student (currently Licensed Esthetician), and I attended from October 2015 to July 2016. There were two instructors that made my time there worthwhile. One of them being Carla. That is one person that KNOWS her stuff. From waxing, to facials, to product ingredients. She is also incredibly relatable and talks to you, not at you. I'm starting to lose track of who does what when I come to Avenue, mainly because all the good ones graduate and move into that big real world with real big salon prices. Except Raven, she has great arms. For academias out there who are accruing fixed interest rates on their loan demons, or for people who just want an affordable luxury in their lives without breaking their piggy, there is Avenue. If you sign up for their emails, you are notified their weekly discounts each month. And if you schedule a color or a cut on the right day of the week, there's $15 off right there. Right in your face. The students here complete 200 hours in-class and 1500 hours 'on-floor' cutting, coloring, styling, and learning by doing. Thanks to asking questions about how to tame the more unruly 'kicks' of my hair, I've gained invaluable information on how to more clearly convey what I want. In order to create more volume atop your crown, there needs to be some graduated 'stacking' of layers to support and lift, making for a structurally sound cut. Try not to cross your legs in the chair - it tilts your entire torso, including your neck, head, and subsequently your haircut. The back two 'corners' of my head are particularly rebellious, and need extra attention with sushi-like shears. Don't be fooled by the agility and poise of your hard-at-work student, those puppies are capable of slicing a maki roll, and they are certainly capable of more painful things. I should know, I lost a nice girl once to their merciless wrath. She's ok now, poor thing. HUGE tip I've learned from becoming serially styled: bring a handful of photos, preferably printed side by side for comparison, and point out what factor you want from each photo. The students are learning largely hands-on, but also visually, and if you can make what you want crystal clear instead of referencing some sitcom character your stylist has never heard of, you'll be saving everyone a lot of headaches. Another tip: if coloring is in your ambitions and time is scarce in your schedule, try going in twice as often as you usually would: one visit for color, one for a cut. Rinse, repeat. Color takes a while to get the right ratios, apply, set in, and wash out. On top of those 1.5 hours, try explaining how you want your hair cut, having your student stylist consult with senior stylists to confirm how they're planning to cut your hair jives with what you want, cutting the hair, cutting some more, blowing out and finally styling. The process is an exercise in patience, which is why I've been known to bring a snack and reading material. However: since most of the students training here are youthful bright-eyed visionaries, if you start up a few stimulating comments you can bet you'll be discussing live karaoke bands and trailer desserts detrimental to your bodacious figure you worked so hard on instead of finishing that chapter about reseeding Earth after the apocalypse. I feel like I scored the deal of the century. I can't believe it, I received a fantastic haircut, shampoo, blow dry, color and conditioning treatment for $47. Yes that is right. Unfreakingbelievable. I can't even score a decent haircut in this city for under $50. My secret is Avenue Five. Have you not seen the glowing, raving reviews for this place? Read them, they know what they are talking about. I can't even offer up a solid negative experience...maybe a few slight inconveniences. The sticky barrier cream was left on my hairline. My stylist did get water down the back of my shirt during my shampoo. I forgot to mention my Yelp discount. Doh! The entire process took 4 hours. Yeah, that one was a bit hard to handle, but you know what? I left with this amazing cut and color, good conversation and an insight into how Avenue Five works. I really enjoyed hearing Jessica, my stylist, ask her teacher questions on how to cut my hair. She knew what she was doing, but wanted to make sure her method was correct. I would rather have her ask a million questions before cutting my hair. Having 6+ inches taken off can leave you nervous and scared. Jessica made sure we started long and worked our way shorter. I liked being in control of the length and not having to worry about a sudden chop of the scissors. It took me almost a month to get in, since I needed an after-hours or a Saturday appointment. My advice would be to make it way in advance and early in the month. I was on the waiting list in December and never received a call. They are a very busy saloon. Avenue Five uses the Vidal Sassoon method of cutting hair. From what I gathered, it is an honor to be one of those schools. Avenue Five carries the Sebastian and Kevin Murphy line. Love these products, even though they are pricey. The esthetics section was bumping! They had a constant stream of people coming in and out. I hear fantastic things about their facials. 2 days later I am 100% in love with my cut and color. 4 hours and under $50 later, I have no regrets and only soft, fluffy, fabulous hair. I didn't have the best experience here at AvenueFive. I received an appointment reminder and when I showed up I 'wasn't on Lindsay's books'. I was rushed out and did not receive a tour or really any other information for that matter. I drove to AvenueFive with my child in rush hour traffic and felt I was an inconvenience to visit your school. Everything looked sloppy and unorganized. Trash, paperwork, food, and personal items were scattered throughout the school. The office that I was taken into after she finally agreed to speak with me at all was a total wreck. It's no wonder she couldn't find my confirmation for an appointment which I had in an email that I saved (because I'm organized like that). I can't imagine anyone could get a proper education at such a disorganized establishment. I will forward this email along to make sure it gets in the right hands. I feel my time and my business were wasted and unappreciated. read more

Never ever dye your hair there! I brought my mom here with me this week. She had a touch up . I only give this place a one star because they use good product. The color was everywhere, on my mom's neck forehead, face ear . It took an hour to wash her hair. And her shirt was soaked and stained. I am so regret bring my mom here. I don't look like a Yeti (much) since discovering this place. They are cheap, which is my favorite price. Cheap. They give manicures that don't involve filing your nails down, supergluing plastic claws on my hands and painting it all down with acrylic. They even pay attention to cuticles and everything. They do facials and extractions and peels, oh my. They wax. They cut and color hair (even colors that aren't primary, if that's not your thing). GO SEE HER! my hair was in BAD shape. i'd bleached streaks in my ashy brown hair months ago and had been dying it various shades of red. BUT i was getting tired of the maintenance. i had ventured into a pricey salon in december to see if they could help but without much luck. they seemed baffled by my "fire streaks" as i had named them since they faded from deep red to a orangy blonde on the tips. jessica seemed more confident to tackle my situation and did an extremely better job than the "professional" for next to nothing. im going back very soon! read more

After being a member of Yelp since September 2009, I figured it's time. Enough with attempting to be a non-contributing Yelper. Here it is, in the web, my first review. But honestly after holding out this long to write a review I knew it had to be a good one. It's kind of like waiting to lose your virginity... if you hold out long enough - it comes to a certain point where you want it to be "special".... right? Anyways, enough about me - let's talk about my hair!! Oh Avenue 5, you know what's up. This place is a god-send. Not only is it a dream to my wallet but to my hair follicles as well. The haircut I got from there last night by the wonderful, oh-so talented Diamond Mueller (this is not a friend-endorsement, this girl really is amazing), was my best haircut to date. After many years of deliberation and questioning, I decided in a spur of the moment - in the salon chair to get BANGS! Holey Guacamole - my side bangs just got an upgrade and the richter scale on my compliment meter is off of THE charts. I feel like a new woman. I didn't get a haircut, I got a hairstyle. They do take long at Avenue Five, but that is only because of their incredible attention to detail and yearn for perfection of their canvas' (your hair). I decided to get red streaks underneath my black hair as well. (You can check out my 'do on my profile) ....So full color dye, streaks, haircut, & tip for all around $60, but a life-changing new look - priceless. I wanted to reply to the post written by one of the students that went here. Her review was completely wrong and disrespectful to our amazing teacher Rebecca. Number one Rebecca NEVER "actively helped the students bully" her. In fact she had a meeting with me and this student to try and resolve the issue of her thinking the class was "bullying" her. Rebecca took all the steps necessary to try to defuse the problem the best way possible. Number two Rebecca was the best teacher i have ever had. She really took the time to get to know her students, and teach us in the way we learn the best. Im a very visual learner and she always took the time to not only explain what and how to do things but she showed us as well. I had a great experience here, which yes also had some ups and down but everything in life thats worth doing will have that. I learned not only to be a good aesthetician but I also learned what it would take to own my own business and about the customer WOW through the training of the NUTS AND BOLTS PROGRAM. I wanted to take the time to write a real review instead of someone who just wanted to write something rude and untrue to get back at someone who only tried to help. Alright, so today was my third time at Avenue Five. I've gotten two all over colors and a hair cut there and have been incredibly pleased each time. While I'm not picky about color at all (hey, it's all one shade? sort of? perfect!), and I go in realizing that it is a student salon, I still have walked out nice and happy each time. Today took the freaking cake. I went in for a $12 shampoo/cut/blow out. I haven't had my hair cut in almost two years. It was a mess. I got an appointment with Nikki and she immediately made me feel incredibly comfortable. I told her I was game to let her have artistic license and do whatever she wanted to the cut and she immediately asked a couple easy questions (all one length or layers? we'll have to take 3+ inches off to make it fully healthy, capiche?) and told me what she wanted to do. She politely mentioned some tips to keep my hair happy and healthy while shampooing- and I have to say- that was the least stressful shampoo/conditioner on my neck... ever. I've gotten them before and had water running down my shirt and a crick in my neck, but Nikki somehow made it comfortable like no shampoo I've ever received. She also conditioned it (which I didn't know was part of the shampoo/cut/dry deal). I LOVE the cut. It's absolutely wonderful. She was fast, friendly, fun, and I think I've found my hair stylist for life. PLUS, when I got to the front to pay I remembered that the salon is giving all their hair cut proceeds to the wildfire fund. Oh, and guess what the total was. $8.40. They're having a 30% off deal for hair cuts this month. $8.40 for a shampoo, conditioner, hair cut, blow dry, and style?! AWESOME. read more

I am editing the review I wrote last night after a bad customer service experience at Avenue Five. Brandon, the President of the school and salon, wrote me soon after I posted my negative review and was completely open and receptive to my feedback. He also agreed to make it right and look into my concerns. I am really surprised that a business owner nowadays would take such an interest in what one client, me, had to say about their service. I recommend this place hands down. One bad experience, especially when totally made right by my giving feedback, is not going to tarnish my opinion of this place. I use to go here all the time and you couldn't beat the prices but lately I noticed they've went up on their prices drastically some more expensive than an actual spa. I would rather pay high prices for someone who has graduated school and has a few yr experience than someone who I'm a test dummy on.. I love Avenue Five. Seriously love this place. As someone who is quite vain about her hair and really wanting to get every bang for my buck (and then some) when it comes to hair salons, I feel like I've found my go-to place. I will go here forever and ever and ever as long as I'm in Austin. Prior to this, I had gone to another beauty school to get my hair done but it took so long just to dye the whole thing and get a swing bob. I had also gone to Supercuts and whatnot, but I just can't justify the prices there and the quality of hairstylists there is always questionable and scary. I'm so glad that I did my research and found Avenue Five. My first time here, I wanted a trim and layers as well as balayage highlights done. Oh my goodness, it was amazing. It turned out absolutely beautiful and I got compliments on my highlights all the time. They give you awesome head massages!!! Also, the instructor came around often and would take over for a good amount of time to demonstrate the technique and give pointers. I really enjoyed that since I sorta got to learn as well. They really know what they're doing and the instructors are awesome and so are the students. Thanks, Yolanda! Recently, I came here for a second time. It was really last minute, but they were able to squeeze me in! I checked in and waited for some time and my hairstylist came out to get me. He told me that he was just called in and that the student that was supposed to be with me cancelled and so he'd get ready as fast as he could. My mission that day was to get a dramatic haircut. I cut off 8 inches of my hair and donated it to Locks of Love :) Then, I told him that I wanted to get my hair cut into an asymmetrical bob. The student and his instructor were really happy that I was very open to changing my hairstyle that dramatically. They always asked me what I wanted and if I was okay with this or that, which was really nice. They're always so informative and talk about the products they use on me and why it's a good product. The instructor told me that I would get the haircut for free due to the mishap with the student cancelling etc, so that was awesome!!! Much thanks to Chas for being super outgoing and positive and such an enjoyable hairstylist to be with. You're awesome! Anyway, I received a ton of compliments on my haircut. It takes courage to rock a short do. I still receive compliments on my old highlights too! People ask me if I recently dyed my hair, but I tell them I got those highlights way back in August 2013. Bottom line: Avenue Five is the best beauty school in Austin. I don't mind that it takes longer to get my hair done here. It's faster than at any other beauty school I've been to. $12 gets you shampoo, cut, and blow-dry. I'd say that's a great deal. From time to time, they'll post one-day specials on Facebook ("call NOW to book an appointment and get 1/2 off your haircut" etc). read more

At first I was super excited to check it out and there were many good reviews. The girl who originally cut my hair made a small mistake easily fixed by putting in layers. However, the professor decided to cut all my hair off losing 6 inches and now I literally have a politician hair cut. I asked for a trim and I lose 6 inches? What the hell? I will NEVER do that again, I'll be paying full price at a salon from now on. read more

Went in as a walk in for information about enrollment, highly dissatisfied. The two students at the desk had an unpleasant and unhelpful attitude. The director behind the desk with them wasn't much more help. Very reluctant to give me any information about the school or to go and get somebody to talk to me. I got referred to the Internet. I'm bummed that I'm one of the few people that had a bad experience at Avenue Five. I booked a facial and highlight/lowlight after reading all the awesome reviews on yelp. I arrived at the salon at 10 am on a Friday and immediately had my 60 minute facial which was awesome and relaxing- no issues there (Sandy was great and will be there for another month-so ask for her!) and for $25 before the Yelp discount -the price can't be beat! The hair was a different issue. I have had blond highlighted hair for over ten years and simply wanted to have my highlights touched up and wanted to add some lowlights to eventually try to get back to my light brown natural color. My hair appt began at 11:15 am (I knew I shouldn't be in any hurry since I had read all the other Yelp reviews). The stylist/student said that in order to add more dimension she wanted to add two shades of brown and then touch up my blonde highlights - she consulted with an instructor who signed off on the game plan and helped us pick out the shades. Skip forward to 4:00 pm and after rinsing and toning, my stylist/student is finally drying my hair. The institute closes at 5 pm and I am leaving to head out of town at 5 pm. My first reaction was holy crap- the brown is really dark, not at all what I was expecting or communicated....it didn't look naturally at all. (My husband later said I looked like someone from Jersey Shore with the blond streaks with such dark brown underneath!) But I told myself to chill out because I helped pick out the colors - so I am to blame (although the color looked way darker than the swatches we selected). Now it's almost 4:30 and I start noticing spots all over my hair and some of the blond highlights around my face are actually orange and extremely brassy looking. My stylist calls another instructor over because the one that had helped us at 11 am is now no longer there. Instructor #2 starts asking me how long I'd been highlighting my hair and I told him for over ten years which is what I had told the stylist and Instructor #1 that morning. He then starts telling my stylist that my hair wasn't taking the color because she should have done this and that before starting b/c of how long I'd been highlighting my hair and that she basically needed to start all over. Even though I couldn't stay at the salon any longer because of my plans to go out of town at 5 - I was disappointed that Instructor #2 stated that they couldn't fix it anyways b/c they closed at 5!! My hair was a complete disaster -I've never been so embarrassed by my hair in my life (my hair was the topic of all jokes over the weekend) - and they weren't even willing to stay late to fix the errors. Long story short- I had to make an appointment to go back on Monday night to see a different stylist to get if fixed. I arrived Monday night at 5:30 and was there until 9 pm. My hair definitely looks better but still has some spots, so I have to wear it up or curly to hide the spots until it all evenly fades out. And if you were wondering, no, they did not discount any of my services, even though in total, my partial highlight/lowlight took almost 10 hours. Before the Yelp discount, I was charged $110 (lowlight of $55, partial highlight of $45 and extra color of $10.) My advice: know that no matter what the other Yelp reviews say, this is a SCHOOL and if the stylists are not properly supervised- the results can be devastating and can cost you a ton of time. I just moved to Austin and Avenue Five Institute is 2 blocks from my house so I thought "why not". I'm so glad I went here for my haircut! I've never been to a Beauty School before and didn't know what to expect. Christine was amazing, she listened to my requests and explained everything she was doing along the way. Bangs are not that easy to cut but Christine did a perfect job, even the receptionist commented on how fabulous they looked when I left. Great for haircolor, just invest some time so the students can do a proper job. They need time to check in with their instructor etc. My demi permanent color took 3.5 hours.. but I have long hair. So, plan accordingly. read more

UM, this is a no brainer. $25 for a 80 minute facial. WTF?! I've been here 3 times now for a facials. Yeah, every facial was different but unique in their own way. I've enjoyed every single one. This is HORRIBLE! I was there for almost 4.5hours this morning and I didn't get what I wanted because as they put it "We are a school, sometimes we run out of time." I got highlights in my hair and left with gunk on my scalp (NEVER SHAMPOOED), stains on my face, wet hair and NO HAIRCUT. She should have told me right from the start, mid way or whenever she KNEW/FELT she didn't have time to cut my hair. Not just leaving me with just a shrug/brush off saying NO TIME.ANd she ONLY TOLD ME AT THE END that she ran out of time to cut my hair! I felt so played out! How can the instructors also just shrug it out with NO TIME, how can they be instructors then, if a school does not teach good time management or good customer service? HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. Ugh. I had a really bad experience here last time. I haven't had a bad haircut in ages, but I got one here recently. My hairstyle isn't difficult. It's shoulder length straight across, stick straw straight hair. My new haircut is anything but straight. Some parts are as much as an inch longer than other. What surprised me is the instructor "okayed it." Had I not been sitting in that chair for two and a half hours already, I may have inspected it more. I just wanted to get the hell out of there. My a$$ was hurting like crazy. I don't think I can chance it here with a haircut again. read more

I've been getting my hair cut and colored here for years and have never had a bad experience. Now they offer massages, facials, a rewards loyalty program and monthly specials too! the haircut was okay, not great, not terrible, just okay, decent. obviously good price (i tipped 100% though the haircut is worth like a 10% tip) they are students, expect to get the longest haircut ever. i am a guy, mine too an 1 hr 10 min and that's with help from an instructor. my gf's took 2 hrs. the "good" thing is they have an instructor check over it, but seriously...like...it doesn't matter because the instructor isn't doing most of the cutting friendly pple. mon/wed/fri are a level more experienced than tues/thurs, but then tues/thurs might be better cause they say instructors do more work there while mon/wed/fri it's usually up to the students read more
