I'm a regular. Took a 3 month break or so. Went to brunch. We did NOT take pics. 3 people Breakfast burrito Biscuits and Gravy Chilaquiles Something was wrong with all dishes. Chilaquiles looked like it came off the kids menu, so small. The Burrito was about half and the tortilla was nearly doubled up across the filling. The biscuits and gravy the biscuit was so stale we scraped bread off the crust. We ordered a table fry. They were so old or under a heat lamp it was like hard chew dark dark leftover potatoes. Grilled Chicken Sandwich, Cubano, House Potato Chips, House Pickles. I'd best describe the menu as upscale pub fare. In general it is well executed, but largely familiar. The meal itself was fine, though somewhat standard and predictable. I was lucky enough to dine with someone who was willing to share, which gave me the chance to try both the Cuban and the Grilled Chicken sandwich. The grilled chicken wasn't listed on the printed menu. It appeared only on the online menu, but was being offered as the special of the day. Of the two, the Cuban was the clear winner. The flavor combination of meats and dairy fats made it hard to compare the sandwiches head-to-head. Every bite was satisfying, and the richness worked exactly as intended. The grilled chicken sandwich had its own appeal, but it felt a little busy. Between the piquillo pepper cheese and the bacon jam, there was a lot competing for attention. It was still enjoyable, just not as cohesive as the Cuban. For a side, I chose the clam chowder instead of the fries or salad. The chowder was decent, but it wasn't a dockside shack in Boston Harbor or something from a family recipe. I missed the deep, rich texture that comes from a buttery roux. It didn't seem like this batch was simmered slowly to developed flavors, it seemed to rely more heavily on flour for thickening. We also started with the pickle plate and the house-made chips. The chips were easily the favorite of the two - crisp, salty, and addictive. If you didn't act fast those disappeared quickly at our table. The pickle plate was a bit more surprising, particularly in terms of the generous portion size of beets, though it didn't leave quite the same impression with our diners as the chips. What really stood out the most about the evening wasn't the food. The real stars of the night were the staff. We made an online reservation for Saturday at 7 p.m., and everything went smoothly on that front. We arrived as the restaurant was coming off the backside of its dinner rush, and you could tell the servers had already put in a long evening. Even then, they remained upbeat and genuinely pleasant. They kept the energy positive and made us feel welcome throughout the meal. Were they perfect? No. At one point a glass broke at our table, and we ended up doing the cleanup using napkins and our bare hands. But considering the pace of the night and the fact that everyone is human, it felt like a minor hiccup rather than a major issue. The staff's professionalism and attitude throughout the evening easily outweighed that moment. We made sure they understood this on the bill. It pains me to write this because Avenues Proper was my literal favorite restaurant in Salt Lake for the past 2 years or so, but recently this place took a turn for the worst. I've gone here 4 times in the past 4 months, and each time gets progressively worse. Today was the nail in the coffin, and I will not be back. Lately, when you walk in, there is never a host at the desk. Instead, you stand there awkwardly waiting to be acknowledged. You'll see servers walking around but not making eye contact with you or alerting anyone that you are there. Sometimes it only takes a couple of minutes for someone to finally come over, but when I went today it took almost 10. The service has gone WAY downhill. The servers are uninterested at best and openly outraged with you at worst. Every single person I interacted with in my last 4 visits was just obviously very pissed off to be at work. I get it, I also hate doing my job, but it ruins the whole meal. I've taken friends here the past few times and left felt completely embarrassed that I subjected them to such a ritual of hostility. The spit in the food seems guaranteed. Then there's the food. I ordered a burger medium well, it came out nearly raw and cold to the touch. I ordered my egg over easy. The yolk was cooked solid. I ordered Diet Coke. I was brought regular Coke. I ask for silverware, I don't get any until all of my food has gone completely cold (like how the burger came out). That brings me to my next point: be prepared to get up and walk to the bar to ask for whatever you need. It takes 20 minutes post-meal to get anyone to bring you the check. God forbid you ask for a box. You'll be there for another hour. I have eaten here no less than 30 times. I never had bad experiences until 2026. Now, it's a total guarantee that my order will be wrong, the server will ignore me, and I'll leave angry that I gave it another chance. read more

A great gastropub in the Avenues! I came here for my Valentine's Day date on a Saturday night via Opentable. We were seated immediately in the bustling dining room, primarily with groups of patrons vs couples. Such a fun vibe though! Our waitress was fantastic, engaged and friendly. We enjoyed our cocktails and dinner - I needed some iron and loved the Avenues Proper Burger - the House salad is amazing! He had the beef stroganoff and boy, I was jealous I didn't get that! We live really close to this restaurant, so my husband and I love to pop in for a Sunday brunch. I want to start by shouting out their mimosas because they are only $3!!!! Such a good price and fun to take a group. We pretty much always get the same thing because we both like it so much. We start with the biscuits and jam. If you aren't getting something else with biscuits, I highly recommend getting this to start. It comes with 2 biscuits, butter, and jam. I love the jam so much!!!! My husband gets the eggs Benedict and loves it. I get the sunrise burger with the egg on the side. I get the egg on the side. This is my perfect burger. Also, they are really consistent about doing a good job with it! My only complaint is that they don't have a Diet Coke fountain, but it's a brewery so I get it. The service is good but can be slow even if it's not busy. They have both tall stool tables and regular ones. The lighting is dim and they did have a light burned out so that made it harder to see the menu but not impossible. I was actually a fan of their burger and fries! What I wasn't a fan of was that my party of 6 was asked sit outside in the quiet alone when there was literally only one table filled inside. They said it was due to reservations (we arrived at 4pm) BUT while we were outside for the next 1.5 hours, we watched 20 come in and out of the doors, all for pick up orders! I can't understand why we were made to eat outside. On that note, the food was decent and the drinks are beer. One of my favorite travel YouTubers recommended this in his Salt Lake City "must-do" videos. It's in a quiet section of Salt Lake City, high on a hill - like north of downtown and not far from Ensign Peak. It's a nice place and it's got the hipster vibe to it. I ordered their famous Chicken and Waffles dish and it was alright. Only because I was still hungry and the portion size wasn't that big. Luckily, the ice cream place next door cured that! But I had a couple of their beers (SLC pils) and they tasted good. Service was alright. Still, I felt like there was something missing about this place when I was there. This is a reliable place for good food, drinks and ambiance. We started with their signature cocktail the Pear Gin Fizz which was refreshing and delicious. We ordered the Steak Frites, Pork Chop and the Sweet Potato Gnocchi. Dinner was served promptly. Steak Frites is always my favorite dish here. They are very generous with the bed of frites on the plate. The steak is cooked to order and flavorful and arrives resting on the bed of frites. The Grilled Pork Chop has a cherry mostarda on top and comes with roasted potatoes. The flavors compliment each other nicely however the pork chop was thin and appeared flattened so it was a little tough. Sweet Potato Gnocchi cames as an ample portion including roasted butternut squash and spinach. The flavors were amazing and I could have licked the bowl. We ran out of room for dessert but there are several sweet options to try. Great place for lunch or dinner. Their parking lot is small and fills up quickly but there is street parking available all around the area. read more

I got the chicken and waffles half order which was the perfect size for me. My husband got the Proper Breakfast. He enjoyed his too but on our way home realized the menu said it came with baked beans and his plate didn't have them... but the food was great. Our waitress was very attentive and answered all our questions. I had The Daily high point can. It was good, but $12 seems a bit high comparatively to other breweries for a West Coast IPA high point can. It was more than my food. Finally got around to giving this place another try! It was pretty busy when we arrived at 730 but we were lucky and got a table with no wait! The service was great and our orders were taken pretty quickly and we didn't have too long of a wait for our food. I started off with a pineapple mule, I wanted a pomegranate marg but they were sold out. The drink was okay, made well, just not my favorite. I wouldn't get it again. The brisket sandwich is a favorite, so I'm told. It got a bit messy, but I tried a bite of the brisket and it was cooked perfectly! definitely would try this next time I go back. The beef stroganoff was delicious! The beef was tender and everything you'd want. I felt like the portion size was perfect. I also loved the sauce. Definitely reminded me of the beef stroganoff I grew up eating, just slightly more elevated! All in all this is a great spot to grab dinner. In the end, I went with a Tropical Storm rum cocktail on the rocks that was light and perfect for the evening. We had three appetizers: the Pork Belly was perfectly crispy on the outside and succulent on the inside. I'm salivating just thinking about it. The Proper Poutine was good, but it was a little too salty. The Kung Pao Cauliflower was delicious, but to be honest, what fried food isn't? The Carbonara with bacon bits is cooked in a light cream with a raw yolk on top (broke the yolk and mixed it in the hot pasta). The waiter says it's an in house made from scratch spaghetti. While it tasted good, the pasta was too soft and airy for a creamy dish like Carbonara. The dessert, a Coffee Pana Cotta was fluffy and not too heavy. The area is a very small space, and the tables are a little crowded. However the dim mood lighting and cozy rustic interior is perfect for any group setting, professional or casual. read more

This spot is a gem in our little neighborhood. Situated across from a little park and next to an ice cream/chocolate shop, it is a great place to enjoy a night out. We both enjoyed a Proper Burger with fries. It tasted incredible, but was way overcooked. Both of our burgers were definitely not "medium," which was disappointing, though the flavor redeemed it. The fries are DELICIOUS. Very salty and well seasons, crispy and fresh on the outside, fluffy and warm on the inside. I don't know what the dipping sauce is they give you, but I could have put that on everything. I enjoyed a great drink called "Poolside" per the waiter's recommendation. It was really weird. Love the setting here up in the avenues of SLC. I normally come here for lunch but today we came here for a date night. It was great although it was much like we were in NYC with how close we were to everyone. We could hear others conversations and constantly eavesdropping on others conversations was somewhat tempting. Now for the food. My wife and I went safe with the burgers. Always a safe choice. Very well cooked and I love the Brioche bun. Everything stayed together just fine. We also split a spinach and artichoke dip. Was very good and was the perfect size for two. Much more spinach and cheese than artichoke which is how I like my spinach and artichoke dip. Service was great and we got a reservation. Unfortunately there was traffic and we had to call and let them know. They were fine with it but give them a heads up. The host recommended a plethora of draft beers that would go well with brunch and I landed on the "Whispers of the Primordial" due to its pineapple taste and it was amazing! The bar itself is located in a separate room that is a lot more dark in lighting but it still had a really cool atmosphere! Ordering from the bartender there, she was really nice and helped a lot with my order of the brisket hash! I had never had a brisket hash before but it was amazing!
