Avery Fisher Hall offers a wide variety of performances for all ages. (Just found out that Avery Fisher Hall will be retitled David Geffen Hall in September 2015). Have seen many performances at this venue for the past 20 years. Recently, I have noticed the New York Philharmonic offers wonderful discounts even up to 50% off a single performance without a subscription. During The week of August 9 through the 15th, The New York Philharmonic had a special for purchasing tickets for $69.50 each (regularly up to $148.00 each). Note: You had to choose three or more in a subscription to obtain the $69.50 price per ticket. In order to take advantage of these wonderful offers, you need to place your email on their mailing list. If you haven't been able to afford to attend a performance in the past, these discounts can definitely ease the wallet pressure. In May, I attended "Bugs Bunny at the Symphony!"(Folks, Sorry for the review delay). For you Baby Boomers, remember all the Classical Music from the Bugs Bunny cartoons? Well, that's exactly what you got!. The Superb NY Philharmonic performed along with Bugs Bunny and his friends cartoons that were on a super widescreen TV above the orchestra. The audience had perpetual smiles on their faces :) Some "What's Up Doc!" extras at Avery Fisher Hall: -Excellent and friendly customer service provided by employees at purchasing windows, intermission refreshment tables, ushers and security. -Souvenir T-shirts such as The Rabbit of Seville (The Barber of Seville) were sold. Avery Fisher Hall is a bit of a Monet (I'm stretching this metaphor a bit, humor me). It's pretty on the outside and in the lobby area, but once you get closer and actually enter the music hall, it's a big old ugly mess on the inside. More like time stopped in the 1970's. Looks aside, our box seats near the stage along the wall had limited view of the stage, but acoustics were good. I would have to lean completely over from our box to see the full stage. I had a good view of half the stage across from me and the conductor in the center. The NY Philharmonic put on a good show. They won't let you get to your seats if you're not on time, so make sure you're on time, the performances generally start exactly when they're supposed to. Intermission was short, I barely had time to go downstairs and grab a drink and a snack. Didn't have time to use the restroom and didn't want to risk not being able to get back to my seat - the usher warned me that she wouldn't be able to let me in if I didn't get back before intermission was over. They're a little overly strict about this in my opinion. Reasonably priced tickets can be found. Come here if you really like the performer or performance. Don't come for the looks or experience or if you're trying to "wow" your out of town guests...they will not be "wowed." read more

Went to watch the New York Philharmonic play Rachmaninoff's Second Symphony. The piece was amazing and the orchestra was great. All of the seats on the left and right side of the first, second, and third tiers do not have a complete view of the stage. Also, the sound isn't nearly as full as other concert halls I've been in. There is no problem hearing the orchestra, but it doesn't sound like you are being engulfed in sound the way it should when you are at a philharmonic concert. The concert was great, but the acoustics in the hall could be much better. read more

This is my second JBF awards event as I was a member of James Beard on and off for years, this was the first time working here. Highlights: Meeting Gina and Pat Neely- she is so adorable and delicious- a true food star. Changes: Serious Eats Food blog was nominated and won. Food blogs are here to stay. Food Highlights: Bacon Soup with diver scallop and an oyster cracker from Brinkleys restaurant in Arizona- BANGIN' Caramel Budino with salty sweet caramel and whipped cream- delectable Felidia's pear ravioli with pecorino romano- Divine Michelle Bernstein's almond brittle mole with chocolate- Delish Many more too numerous to mention as I waited 4 hours to eat then went into a two day food coma following the event. read more

After reading all the horror stories about the acoustics in this place, I expected it to throroughly suck... and I am a music signal processing specialist, so I was super afraid. But, basically, suck it didn't, at least in our seats. We were in row D, which is indeed the fourth row from the stage for the performance of the Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra that we saw. (The nytimes mentioned that group tried pushing the stage out over the first 11 rows a couple years back, and to my eye, it did look like the stage extended very far into the main hall... even if row D is the actual fourth row in the nyphil website.) Anyway, to make a very long and boring acoustics lecture very short, you get two types of sound in your ears when you watch a concert: direct (from the musicians on a direct path to your ears) and indirect (from the musicians to the walls / ceilings / other patrons / chairs / etc. and then bouncing into your ears). When you sit in the fourth row in the center and watch a small ensemble situated towards the front of the stage (like the Mostly Mozart) you get lots of direct sound and not as much indirect. Therefore, any suckiness of the hall effects you less. And it didn't hurt that they played brilliantly, with a stirring performance by soprano Christiane Oelze. Basically, if you've found the acoustics to be a problem, I'd encourage you to sit as close as possible and to go for a small ensemble performance. You won't be able to see the back row of musicians as well, but curiously, the fourth row is substantially cheaper than the 7th or so. In any case, after a handful of renovations, Avery Fisher is at least visually beautiful inside, but the lobby suffers from a bad case of the sixties. read more

This is a smaller venue in Lincoln Center. That has pros and cons. Cons are not all seats are great, be sure to ask before you buy where they are and about obstructed views etc. Pros are it offers a more intimate experience. Ive only been on the floor where the acoustics are good. Traffic flow here is pretty easy actually, for a NYC venue. Restrooms are busy here. Be prepared. read more

I came to see the Ring of Fire show in this Beautiful performance hall. Picked up my tickets quickly, was ushered to my seat quickly, and enkoyed the presentation. In case you csnt identify the building, the Avery Fisher Hall is in the building that uas the New York Philharmonic sign above it. I just saw a great orchestra show here, performed by two different High Schools. Getting to watch them perform really put into perspective how horrible my Junior High School band was because I mean these kids sounded like true professionals! This has always been a nice venue to hold events, so I knew I couldn't have any real complaints aside for a bunch of people around me talking loudly, some lady having a suitcase where I actually should have been sitting, and this one baby continuously crying but whay'cha gonna do? Lol, these things are always expected... well, maybe not the suitcase lady =P All in all this and my prior events here, have all been a great time. read more

Beautiful concert hall at the Lincoln Center, and home to the NY Philharmonic. I've been here a couple of times to hear the Symphony play and it's always a pleasure. I usually try to make it there to hear Tchaikovsky at least once a year since he's typically my favorite to see performed live. Anyway it's a very nice concert hall and everybody is usually pretty dressed up. It's always fun to speak with the mostly older crowd, especially because they always comment on how young I am. But people of all ages should learn to appreciate music don't you think? Tickets are usually reasonably priced as long as you're not in the middle orchestra or loge levels. There are rush tickets as well. If you're looking for something to do after, there's always plenty of restaurants and other venues nearby. It is the upper west side after all! read more

I might be one of the few people who doesn't like the acoustics in this venue. I've been to 2 concerts so far this season for the Mostly Mozart festival, I have sat in the second tier both times (maybe that's the reason) and I just don't think the acoustics are that good. The sound doesn't really carry and I don't think the venue is optimized for the sound. The venue itself is bright, clean and nice. The lobby is nice and it's easy to get up and down to the the upper tiers. But the acoustics just didn't wow me. The first concert featured a solo vocalist and her voice didn't carry at all I could hardly hear her. It would have been nice if she used a mic or if they amplified her somehow. Same issue with the second concert that featured a solo violinist, it sounded think and I couldn't really appreciate it. I suppose you need to get better seats that are closer to the stage to maybe get better acoustics but for a big hall like that, the sound should be optimized and you should be able to hear well regardless of where you sit. read more

The most dastardly acoustics for a concert hall to be found anywhere in New York. Seriously, WHAT were they THINKing. The original plan was to build Avery Fisher as a replacement for Carnegie Hall (once AF was finished, they meant to tear down Carnegie). But because of the insistence of those holding the purse strings, the intended acoustics of the hall never materialized. Instead, weird things were added here and there, other facets of the architecture deleted, so that the hall simply does not work. Afterwards, everyone realized how horrible it sounded and decided to keep Carnegie. To this day, people are still trying to 'renovate' Avery Fisher to make it sound decent. It is extremely unfortunate that such world-class talent is hosted at this hall. The sound is swallowed up, it doesn't live or breathe, doesn't reach the audience. It never congeals. It's not allowed to reverberate. It sounds like every musician on stage is playing in his or her own concrete box with a hole on top. A darn shame. Truly, a darn shame. read more

I don't think there's a bad seat in this house. We came here to see "Company" and was concerned that our tickets said "limited view". When we got there my stress eased. We were up high in the 3rd tier and the only time we couldn't see is if the actors went under the balcony we were in, which really wasn't that often. I could see Neil Patrick Harris's facial features. That to me made it worth it. My only gripe are that there are 3 bathroom stalls on each floor. Intermission nightmare! The balcony outside made for a nice escape during intermission though. Looking over to the ballet and the opera house. Amazing space with great sound. So happy I got to experience it. read more

I saw the philharmonic here and, while they were superb, I left with only disappointment for the Hall itself. I was in the first level balcony in the back row, D, so I didn't expect the greatest sound experience in the world but wow, it was no better than cheap ear buds back there. It sounded empty and there was none of that "enveloping" feeling one hopes for, and indeed goes to feel, in a live concert hall. The orchestral pieces(Berlioz's symphonie fantastique and Lalo's symphonie espagnole) were downright dull sounding. The encore by the violin soloist did sound brilliant, not needing that resonance that a full orchestra requires, and would make me reconsider not coming back for small ensembles. I heard they're renovating to improve their acoustics. One can only hope they do it well! read more

Great accoustics, but not the most practical architecture. If you're sitting on the sides, you aren't facing the stage, you're facing the people sitting in the middle of the room. It made it pretty hard to see past the people sitting next to you (if they lean a few inches forward). The auditorium was pretty disappointing. But of course, the music is amazing! Next time I'll opt for the cheapest tickets since I know I probably won't see the stage no matter where I am. I attend last night to see the National Chorale perform Beethoven's 9th. While I won't review the performance (great by the way), I was very disappointed with my first visit to AFH. The seats seem to have the orginal padding on them which is worn, tattered and a mustard yellow. Also, the chair used on stage seem like they are something that would have been sold off as non-usable by an events company. Whil I understand that it is built on the basics of harmonics and accoustics I have still been to many great and less renowned places that don't look like the inside of a barn with plywood everywhere. The lobby, patios, staircases and everything else about the Hall except for the actual performance chamber are great. read more

Strange Theater, Odd Acoustics This is only about the theater, not about the performances. Right away, you're struck by the strangeness of this place. When you first enter, you are on the ground floor. After getting your tickets from Will Call (as was my case), you're thinking, okay, where do I go? The answer is, upstairs! There, the actual theater begins. You find the restrooms are at the very back corners of each floor. And, the drinking fountains are tucked in tiny corners. I found one and one only the time I was there. The seats are older, with what seem to be the original cushions. Plus, the seating in the Rear Orchestra is tight. The sightlines are mediocre, as you are looking over or around different people's heads. Now, the acoustics, which have been getting plenty of comments. They are sharp and harsh. Really no warmth to them. You can quickly tell why: all the corners above the stage and in the auditorium are tight, 90-degree angles. No curves. From that, you are going to get harsh reverberation. The warmth of the sound is going to be absent. You can tell, as has been commented, that all sorts of additional devices have been installed to try to mitigate this. But, to no real effect. This is New York City! And, you would expect our city to have the kind of concert hall that matches this city's greatness. I am guessing that might be Carnegie Hall, but I haven't been there yet! NOTE: Want to have fun with the ushers? Simple. Bring out your camera at any time near the start of the performance. Drives them nuts! They will curtly hand you a red warning card. What it says is that you cannot take a photo during the performance, but you can before, after, or during intermission. So, even though it's technically still intermission, the house lights are up, and the musicians are still milling about the stage, the uptight ushers are going to confront each and every "offender." I came here for the special New Year's Eve concert with the Philharmonic. The concert was fun and really great. We sat in the top tier center section. The acoustics here are pretty good and we could see pretty well also. I love that the ushers were very friendly and helped me locate the men's room quickly during the intermission. If you do go to a concert here I suggest getting the center section of the balconies since you will have to stretch your neck if you are on either side. But overall a must for any new yorker who wants to experience a live orchestra like the NY Phil. read more

Nothing horrible, nothing too special about this concert hall. Home to the New York Philharmonic, you're guaranteed to hear some amazing classical performances here. As for aesthetics, though, nothing really stands out. It's definitely nothing like the Met Opera Hall. The last concert I attended here, I sat in a second tier box on the left side. No complaints about the sound from up there, but if you're someone who needs a clear full view of the stage, I wouldn't recommend these side seats. The far left quarter of the stage was cut off from my view. The lobby is extremely crowded before a performance. Lines are long for sandwiches. However, when I went up just one level, there were additional food vendors with no lines. They sold simple sandwiches and bottled drinks; my salmon and arugula sandwich was actually quite tasty. And please, for God's sake, if you're sick, STAY HOME! And if you have electronics, SILENCE THEM! I could barely enjoy Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 because someone would cough or a beeping phone went off approximately every 11 seconds (yes, I counted). And DON'T CLAP BETWEEN MOVEMENTS! Saw the final Harry Potter film here for it's NYC premiere and had mixed feelings about the hall. Since i was watching a movie in a hall that usually has live music this review might not be as helpful so i'm going right dowen the middle with it. I love the area around Lincoln Center and really had high hopes: Everything about Avery Fisher Hall is classy, the outside of the venue is obviously massive and very pretty, the outer concourses are nice and wide and offer nice views of the Lincoln Center property through the windows. The seats are comfortable enough inside but the sound was some of the worst i've experienced at a hall/theater. YES i was watching a movie, but this was real bad. I was about 15 rows from the stage and had difficulty hearing. There was no food available and there were not many stalls in the men's room. The space is beautiful and i really wanted to be a huge fan of the hall but i just couldn't find any qualities that would make it an exceptional venue. read more

I've been here a few times for the NYU Philharmonic but never decided to yelp about it until after I experienced the London Philharmonic here (2/27/09)....maybe because the conductor, Vladimir Jurowski was SO SEXY!@_@ Well, as always the place was a raucous before the performance, people wining and dining and waiitng in lines for the bathroom, coat check and getting into their seats...etc. I finally planted my butt into my seat and prepared myself for an evening of classical music. I was excited because Leon Fleisher (80!) nursed his RH well enough to play tonight! Woah, when Vladimir walked out among his orchestra, I swear my eyes did widen a little more...was it that wavy dark hair? No! It was definitely the way he carried himself, tall, slender and confident ...I swear I only had 1 glass of wine @ dinner..^_^!!! The evening was splendid....one thing about New Yorkers, they are in hurry to get to where they have to be, but they are not in a hurry to finish giving people their opinion and praise...we clapped continuously for over 10 minutes at the end..even after the encore! Vladimir ran in an out from back stage and took his bow with the orchestra at least 6 times before people gave up on the idea that he wasn't going home with anybody from the audience that night!! Then once again, the place stirred up its entropy and people couldn't slow down to get outside. read more

Attended a performance of the American Symphony Orchestra-The Remains of Romanticism. The space is solid-maybe looks a bit shopworn now that places like Disney Hall In Los Angeles exist. The family next to us was more or less having a picnic. I feel for anyone in the performing arts with everyone's attention spans being so fractured these days. I've come here a few times over the past year for various events such as the philharmonic, friends' graduations, etc. The coolest feature of this place is that the subway exit/entrance is connected directly to the building, so you can exit the turnstile, walk up the stairs, and be directly in the main lobby of Avery Fisher. The main auditorium is large and nicely spaced out. Other than that, I'd have to agree with Steve that the sound quality is less than perfect. Although I do like several of the other halls around Lincoln Center a bit more, this one does comes off as a bit less pretentious. read more

Avery Fisher Hall is beautiful on the exterior and in the lobby, but it's a bit lackluster once you enter the theatre. Lincoln Center is associated with elegance and modern beauty when it comes to the arts, but Avery Fisher Hall doesn't live up to that. I came here for a commencement ceremony, and upon entering the hall, I found myself disappointed. After all the theatres I've been to in New York City and Boston, this was nothing compared to most. It was shocking, considering the level of taste that Lincoln Center represents. I mean, once the stage was set and the decorations were displayed, the setting was a bit better, but that was at the hands of my college. The theatre itself was small, too. It's an odd feeling to enter from the stunningly modernized lobby because the two are such a dichotomy. Going into the theatre is like entering an unkempt past. Maybe I'm biased because I didn't come here for an actual performance, but I wouldn't be ecstatic to come here for another event. read more

I'm not a regular here as I am at the Met, but do come here occasionally when I see a good performance lineup or when I'm able to score some great orchestra seats at a good price. of all the concert halls i've visited around the world, this is by far my favourite. the acoustics are simply amazing inside. regardless of whether you are sitting in the orchestra or up in one of the 3 tiers, you will hear beautiful, crisp music coming from the stage. on most of my visits here, i had the pleasure of hearing the ny philharmonic orchestra perform. personally, i like sitting on the left side of the orchestra section if i want to see the pianist and watch his/her magic fingers tickling the ivories. if i'm there for just the sound, i'll choose the 1st tier, since i feel this section gives the best combination of sight and sound. i have, on occasion, sat all the way up in 3rd tier, and even though the orchestra looks smaller, the sound is still awesome. there are restrooms and water fountains on every floor, which is very convenient. there is also a restaurant on the main floor/lobby. i highly recommend attending a concert at this hall, you won't regret it! read more

Seeing live music is a treat. Seeing classical music in this setting is always fun. We usually go with friends and sit in a first level side balcony The perspective is interesting. We don't bring the average age down as much as we used to when we go. There were more young people than usual last night, which was cool because the conductor was 85 years old (and killed Beethoven's 3rd Symphony!). Beautiful! Grand! Breathtaking! There are some of the adjectives that come to mind when I think of Avery Fisher Hall. AFH is home to the NY Philharmonic and also hosts special performances. One might think that concerts here are out of their price range, but you'd be wrong. If you are a student you can nab rush tickets for a fraction of the cost of normal admission. So, hit up all your friends in grad school and get them to take you to the NY Phil. Alan Gilbert is a musical savant who conducts based on memory... He did two - four movement concertos without a score in front of him. I didn't notice this at first until my attentive friend pointed it out to me. It was a unique New York experience that I wish I had done sooner. I plan to come back, and watch more NY Phil performances using the student rush ticket purchasing. I'm lucky that my wife is in grad school :) read more

I love the location of this theater - something about Lincoln Center makes everything seems nicer... I went last night for the Academy of American Poets sixth annual benefit, Poetry & The Creative Mindsaw with a bunch of fun celebs: Meryl Streep, Katie Couric, Candace Bushnell....and some other great readers. A place that you should see at least once because of the location, the inside was pretty basic, I didn't see anything that popped out at me. I read a few reviews about poor acoustics but I didn't have a problem with that, probably because it was a small reading... However, i did get a peak at their spring calendar and sounds like they have some incredible shows coming up! read more

Came for Bach Variations 2013, and must say this is a beautiful venue. Within the Lincoln Center plaza, this building is located to the right of the fountain and Opera House. The Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA by comparison is more contemporary and built more recently. Avery Fisher Hall has the charm of old glamour. read more

The world-famous Lincoln Center contains a whole bunch of concert stages. Most of them are dedicated to classical music and other upscale events. But Avery Fisher Hall also hosts plenty of rock and folk music - something that's much closer to my heart. With its gilded walls, plush red seats, beautiful design and grand ceiling, the place can turn any music, dance or spoken word act into a magical experience. Like many places built before the advent of electricity, Lincoln Center was built specifically with acoustics in mind, so the sound there is absolutely perfect, on par with Carnegie Hall. Even without amplification, the sound carries through the specially designed space. The walls themselves work as amplifiers. The place can be understandably pricey, being part of the upscale and expensive Lincoln Center. Prices usually hover in mid- to high range, depending on the act. I don't remember ever paying less than $30 to go there. They do, however, offer considerable special deals for seniors and students. read more

I avoid this place like the plague. The acoustics are simply awful and, unless you have a seat near the very front you need high-powered binoculars to see the performers! There are so many better concert halls in NYC but unfortunately some of the best artists appear here. read more

Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center is certainly nice to look at but it doesn't seem to be a very good place to hear music. I agree with other reviewers that the acoustics are just not good. We went to a Mostly Mozart festival event this evening which included the Brahms Double Concerto, normally a wonderful piece but in this case we could hardly hear the soloists. The cellist seemed to be playing quite energetically but there was very little sound that reached us, and we could hear the violinist somewhat but the sound was quite thin and some notes were barely audible. We were sitting about halfway up in the orchestra in row T on the right side as you face the stage. I was thinking it might sound better from the first or second tier but one of the other reviewers said it wasn't good there either. The sound really doesn't carry in this hall, maybe it is better if you are very close to the performers. The view from these seats was also not good -- the people in front of us blocked a full view of the stage. After intermission the orchestra played the Brahms Second Symphony but the acoustics made everything sound rather dull. I think some part of the problem may be that they have sold stage seats on the back and sides, so what would normally be reflecting surfaces at the back of the stage may absorb the sound when people are seated there. For the prices they charge for these and other concerts, at least the hall should not be the problem. If you want to hear a great-sounding hall, you just have to go across town to Carnegie Hall which of course is still one of the best-sounding concert halls in the country. A couple of other issues with this hall, the rest room lines were so long at intermission that it took almost until the start of the second half to get back to my seat. And because they had no cough drops available in the auditorium you could hear coughing at the pause between movements -- why doesn't every concert hall either give out cough drops or sell them at a low cost? It would seem only logical to do so. read more

If your ideal of great concert hall acoustics is a multiplex movie theater, then this is the place for you, as Avery Fisher Hall is BONE dry, and sound does not carry well across the boards. I've heard major barn-burning pianists sounds like ants here, and the orchestral blend seems to favor the low brass (who always blast you out of your fucking seat) and is otherwise underwhelming. Anyway if you like your orchestras soloist-oriented and dripping with attitude, then enjoy the venerable NY Philharmonic at their resident home...I hear another renovation is in the works? I went here to see the NY Philharmonic with Joshua Bell and was extremely disappointed with the acoustics. Probably the worst concert hall I've been to for classical music. We sat right behind the conductor about 20 rows back and it sounded like I was watching the performance on TV or Youtube. No worse, because at least I can turn up the volume on TV. read more

Could there exist a venue more perfect for a Tasting Event/Awards Show than Lincoln Center? Everything is laid out optimally for showcasing VIPs as well as the general public. Working as Staff for the James Beard Awards Gala, lots of nooks and crannies can seem like a labyrinth of endless possibilities, from the front of the house to the back of the house. Arpeggio is optimal for VIPs, where as Portico is perfect for a PlanB in case of a rain out (like yesterday), the Chorus Room is perfect for stashing your belongings for Staff. Dedicated loading docks provide efficient unloading of food, restaurant supplies, drinks, as well as kitchen equipment.
