Lovely ambiance, delicious food, great service from Chelsea. The special Spring Salad with fava beans and ricotta was especially good. I had the ravioli, my friends had French fries (don't judge, they were handmade in-house and divine) and the duck rillette appetizer as main. It's a 4-star just because the portions were so small. I didn't leave full and that's a shame.

I was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars here because of the negligent and inattentive execution of the cassoulet. The beans were semi raw, the sausage and pork belly past their expiration dates, while the duck was fine again. The cassoulet is the ultimate test for a French restaurant and also, ordering this dish bears the highest risk of disappointment because it's typically cooked once and then reheated and reheated and ....invariably resulting in old, dry, tasteless meats of questionable suitability for human consumption. In this cassoulet I also noted the beans were still undercooked when they should be ready to pop so soft. But enough about this low point. It's possible other dishes are worth the 4 stars here. I very much enjoyed the endive-pear salad and the tripple-cooked French fries. One of only two places I encountered on my trip that actually celebrated the Idaho potato with special dishes like this. Service could not have been better and I would rate the ambiance as maybe 70% cozy, given the semi- colder temperature ceiling lamps, although the dining room is rather dimly lit. As my last note, they do not have cozy booths. There are only semi booths along long benches and it squeezes guest into close proximity that perhaps shouldn't be given the....uhm....large spectrum of patrons I observed.

Came here for a date night and we were not disappointed! Food was amazing, and everything was well-balanced. Our server was also wonderful and made really great recommendations. The wagyu onglet was a standout and a definite must-have.

Avery Restaurant in The Avery Hotel. Yelp reviews for restaurant all seem to be under the hotel banner and not listed separately.

On the first floor of a circa 1920 building that was a couple of years ago renovated and crafted into a boutique style hotel and restaurant with design details reminiscent of its' original timeframe. The chef here is a talented one and his menu leans old school, of the era, European. The food is top notch with the associated prices one expects for on the cusp of fine dining European menu and well trained, friendly service staff. They are open for lunch (11-2) and dinner (starting 5p) on weekday and brunch (starting 9a) and dinner on weekends. For dinner service as cost planning, I'd say $70ish /pp with tax is doable before tip if ordering appetizer, main, maybe sharing a side and having dessert without libations. (Service here is 30% tip worthy territory.) They have a full bar so if ordering cocktails, plan accordingly for increased price. DISCLOSING A PINCH OF DISCOMFORT: The Avery's promo materials say this about their chef: ""Cal Elliott is a Michelin-Star chef..." This makes me go "hmmm..." in the way of not so much. At one time this chef worked in a Michelin starred restaurant in a big city; NYC, I think. But Michelin stars are awarded to and stay with the restaurant, not the chef who was leading the kitchen. I have also seen comments along the lines of "...come to the Avery to enjoy Michelin star food". Again, it is not this restaurant that has been awarded the star. That this talented chef, who has been a Beard nominee a couple of times, including semifinalist nominee for his Boise work - those nominations do remain with chef - creates great food is a true thing. So is the fact that he once led a kitchen at a Michelin starred eatery. But The Avery restaurant has not earned Michelin recognition in any way and so it does not serve "Michelin star food". I'm going to chalk this up to the people writing the promo material and press materials not knowing better, not that they are attempting to mislead diners who don't know better. Okay then. THE SPACE - as in limited - IS THE RUB: The only drawback I can name for this restaurant is that the small sort of up-end cafe look tables are too small and the seating is so close together that one almost feels like a sardine in the proverbial can. See Robert K's 3 star review and I say "ditto" to his space criticisms. It makes it a "I can recommend it for you to try but I won't return" kind of place. If this was based on comfort of space alone, it would be 3 stars but they get so many other things right. EATS & $$$: Open for lunch and dinner weekdays and brunch and dinner on weekends. Preparing oneself for prices at dinner service, you know like if you were treating your friend to a birthday dinner or taking a date can be helpful. To that end: DINNNER: Appetizers (maybe 6'ish) run from $11 (green salad) to $23 for seafood in ceviche style. Mains (also maybe 6'ish) run from house made ravioli with seasonal treatments ($26) to a duo of beef (filet and short ribs) $54 but when lamb is on the menu it always gets my attention and as example lamb ragout here is $38. Sides, a handful, in the mode of what one might expect at a steakhouse of that day at $11'ish each. As I remember a handful of desserts with in the $12 range. The lavender creme brulee gets the buzz but I don't enjoy the floral flavor and when they have sticky toffee pudding on that menu, save room! LIBATIONS: Full bar, spendy but expert craft cocktails, good wine options. Up the bill depending on what you order. LUNCH: (11 - 2) on Weekdays with prices from $11 to $25'ish and some items that would work as brunch-time choice. I think they call that section of the lunch menu "Late Risers" and that is very clever. HAPPY HOUR: 3 - 5 weekdays, I think, some discounts on libations. AND MORE: Tiner's Alley is a casual sort of pub style place with more limited hours open at the back of the building. As you walk from front to Tiner's (which you can also get to off the back alley but I don't recommend it) you'll see the working kitchen on both sides. ACCESSIBILILTY: Level in from sidewalk into building. The dining room set up has only a couple of tables that could be used by diners using wheelchairs and the people dining with them. Side note: The ADA is 35 years old this month, which is also Disability Pride month, and they ought to do better for seating. There are some standard height seats alongside the wall in the bar. PARKING: In downtown Boise is a bear on street. But they have added valet service here to park for you in a local garage. Valet service is free at lunch. (But tip them, of course.) BONUS: They have a chef's table option and I don't know where it is in the restaurant but I hear it accommodates up to 20 guests and the chef will work with you to plan a menu if you have an event there. All ou planning grad, engagement, wedding, birthday special events take note.

TEN! Where are more stars?! The Avery has come out swinging in the ever expanding downtown Boise restaurant scene. The restaurant takes up 3/4 of the ground level of the hotel (last 1/4 is Tiner's Alley bar, also great!) . The inside is very tasteful design, not overly done, just the right amount of gorgeous Parisian style, feeling like you are in a place far away from Boise. We started by enjoying some Vancouver BC west coast oysters, our favorites! Since Little Pearly Oyster Bar closed we were left wondering where would be a good alternative, come to find out Avery has us covered. One special on this night was truffle gnocchi which my wife ordered and thoroughly enjoyed. I almost went for another special that sounded amazing, but got sucked in by the Lamb Ragu which was just out of this world! Finished with creme brûlée and chocolate cake.

Took a group of 10 to The Avery Hotel & Restaurant and I gotta say it was impeccable! The service the drinks the food. The dessert all perfection!!! I haven't had a meal this good in forever!! Chef Cal knows what he is doing! Plus we ended the evening with a tour of the hotel, so adorable and well done. I'm booking a staycation asap. 10 out of 10 highly recommended.

This is a review for the restaurant. So good! My brother-in-law and his wife took us there for brunch this morning during our visit. With many good choices on the menu, I settled on a starter order of Scotch egg and a side of breakfast sausages for brunch at the last minute. The alternative I considered was grits with a sunny side up egg and cheddar. The egg was perfect 8-minute egg with a slight soft-core yolk coated with layer of deep-fried meaty goodness. It was a generously sized egg placed on a small bed of green salad and bacon pieces so I wouldn't have needed the sausages in retrospect as the side came with 4 fat juicy pieces. The service was very attentive and friendly and the decor was inviting and cozy. It was a yummy start to the weekend.

Pistachio Soufflé, served crème anglais. It's worth the 20 minute wait.

Tasted like my parent's homemade "cut up potato and throw them in boiling oil" fresh. The lamb chops I got were made to order/you could choose how rare or done it was prepared - great details honestly. The person who waited on me/served me was so great...their name was Teagan, and they even gave me other suggestions of places in Boise if I was interested. It came with a soup, salad, bread, and sides of fries and rice. The soup was a flavorful cream of mushroom and it came with a slight kick since they had put red pepper flakes in it. You can choose one way or the other or both. I got both and it came with pimento and peppers on top and the other was baked in a white butter sauce. Very well cooked! Delicious. The cod was flaky and moist. It was perfect! Staff are so nice and attentive. I think the ambiance is comfortable.

I don't doubt that if you're doing dine-in service. We saw a lot of personal attention by family members spent on some of the larger tables. Ambiance was pretty cool, with a lot of Basque cultural pictures and spread over a couple seating areas with inside a larger mini-mall setup. It was a tad loud though. So we went tapas style, ordering 5 dishes and 2 desserts. Mains -Basque meatballs had great flavor within the meatball, but the gravy seemed a bit flat like a powder mix base. -Cod in Salsa Verde was a disappointment. The clams had no significant meat and the sauce was a tad bland. -Really enjoyed the Txistorra In a Blanket. The chorizo had a really nice flavorful punch and wrapped light filo. The coupled sauce had a balanced flavor with spicy kiss. -Really enjoyed the calamari strips. Not chewy with a light breading. Very fresh taste and the sauce was very good. -The Pan con Tomate with Manchego cheese were very nice. The jamon had a great cure and texture with a nice foccacia and cheese base. The tomatoes gave it a nice acidic punch. Dessert -The burnt cheesecake was a crowd pleaser. The cheesecake really let the cream cheese come through without a ton of sugar. -Tarta De Manzana was great. Firm, thinly slice green apples with an amazing crust with great body and featuring caramelized granulated sugar on the bottom. I just wish they would have put more orange marmalade on the base to bump up the aromatics. It really would have made it flavor explode.

The reason we went back the second time was because we remembered how good the food was and how nearby it was too. The second time the food was still really good, but the service was HORRENDOUS. Brittney was such a ***** to me and my parents, my mom especially. My mom was complimenting her and something about the food, and she straight up just walked away in the middle of my mom still talking. And no it wasn't busy. It was towards the end of the night, there was maybe 2-3 other customers there. She acted like we were bothering her the whole time. Then once she'd leave us would just stand up at the bar flirting with the other guy working there and just ignore anyone else. Then on top of all of that, my dad tells me she added $10 onto her tip! FRAUD!!! I've attached photos as evidence. My dad still tipped her even though she was so rude and disrespectful. But apparently that wasn't enough for her and added $10 onto the total. I cannot believe that. And my dad tells me it was difficult to get his $10 back after calling and talking to the manager. He didn't get the name of the manager but he said that they were just making excuses and saying oh but she's our best server. Obviously not! Saying things like oh she must've just been really busy. Again, we were there when it was dead and about to close soon, no it was not busy. It's almost as if this business does this type of thing often because there was no alarm from the manager, then finally after much deliberation decided to send back the $10. Absolutely ridiculous. No : "I'm so sorry here's a free meal on us", or atleast a "here's a coupon or gift card for next time you come in", nothing. This is the type of thing that gets people closed down. We should report to the BBB. This is insane. And to not be offered anything to make it right is what really gets me. Like do they not want us to ever come back??? Not to mention tell everyone we know, etc. Yikes! And this is what we get for wanting to support local businesses instead of going to the big chains. What a bummer.

Visions of warm Nutella, strawberries, and perfectly folded crêpes danced in her head all morning. She even waited until 11:15 to arrive--because she's polite like that. Unfortunately, the only thing served this morning was confusion and disappointment. When she walked in, a sad little man sprinted from the back of the restaurant to the front shouting, "The doors shouldn't be open yet! WHO OPENED THE DOOR?" like he was investigating a major security breach instead of greeting a customer who just wanted a delicious breakfast. My daughter--who regularly handles ACTUAL emergencies--was so startled and embarrassed that she simply turned around and left... still crêpe-less. So instead of a relaxing day off treat, she got yelled at by a crêpe sentry. Not exactly the customer experience we were hoping for. We were genuinely excited to try the food here, but sadly we'll never know how the crêpes taste--because apparently getting through the door is a challenge. Very disappointing. If the crêpes are as guarded as the front door, they must be extraordinary, so good luck to the next person!
