We had a dozen large steamed crabs. They were all very heavy. Length of crab is not my method of crab measurement. Weight is what matters! We've had steamed crabs at other places for the past four nights. All large and most more money. None as nice as Avery's. And all were $90 a dozen. My wife and I ate at the bar. And we're so glad we did. Our bartender was Marv. At least that's what I recall. He's been there 40 years and takes excellent care of his customers. THE REAL DEAL!!! There's a reason this place has so many good reviews. They do it right. A legitimate Maryland crab house. They cook the blue crabs fresh...no reheating precooked crabs here. Everything was spot on. Service was great. Food was great. We are coming back for more. This was our first visit, and the steamed snow crabs were 25% off. So we went with that. We also ordered steamed spiced shrimp. I ordered the crab stuffed shrimps with sides. Cole slaw was great, and red potatoes were also fine. I want to try all the sides lol. (This place runs some really great specials. We saw that at Happy Hour they offer cheap draft beer prices and 75 cent raw oysters.) We will come back again. Soon. We tried a new crab house on 5/10/25 since my go to crab house was closed. It is off Route 144 in Frederick MD. This restaurant used to be Jug Bridge many years ago and was a crab house we frequented often. Avery's is now in the same place and the crabs that we ordered were exceptionally good. The service was excellent and the restaurant was extremely busy. Wonderful menu besides the steamed crabs. We will definitely be back soon. read more

My first time having Maryland crabs was not disappointing at all. We put our names on the waitlist an hour prior to arriving to the restaurant, and was quickly seated when we got there. The service was super friendly. Looking around, it seemed like every table got the all you can eat crab deal. We ended up ordering an array of dishes, which was probably where we went wrong because the crabs were bomb. Definitely 5/5, but the other things were not so great like the oysters (2/5), the snow crabs (3/5). The crab cakes, the shrimps and the mussels were 4/5. So I've been to Avery's a few times and the food is always really really good, this past time I'll have to say it was the icing on the cake for me, it was my first time trying the crab legs, they came out nice and hot, had the melted butter to go along with them, hush puppies and fries, can't go wrong. I also have to say that the large crabs you get a ton of meat inside, it's pretty amazing. Service was great it took a while to be seated due to the high volume of customers but that's always a good thing, but once seated we had been waited on quickly and food came out felt like minutes later. I love the feel of this place when sitting out the deck outside, you get the best of both worlds, a nice breeze, good music and just a nice summer feel pretty much. Great place. read more

Avery's is one of my favorite crab spots in Frederick. We always pick up half a bushel there and some sides. Off season they serve crabs from spots like Louisiana and North Carolina and they have never disappointed. If you eat in it's got a very casual fell and the bar upstairs is fun to go grab a drink at. Got here pretty early on a Saturday (before they opened) - a few cars were in the lot. You can park in front of the restaurant or further up back and to the side. Entrances are on either side of the restaurant. They opened on time at 12pm. The host came and welcomed everyone that was in line (by this time the folks who were waiting in their vehicles had come out) - I would say there were less than 15 folks in line. Within the next few hours, that parking lot got full. You could be seated inside, or outside (covered but kind of still inside) and then there was outside the restaurant too. Each table has its own bucket and paper towel. Since we were getting crabs, we also each got a wooden mallet. Our waitress announced herself and gave us each a menu. We already knew we were there for the All You Can Eat Crabs special, and they had 5 options to choose from, all at market price (per person). We went with Option A which on the menu stated it is all you can eat crabs, crab soup, fries, hush puppies, cornbread, coleslaw, corn (seasonal) and watermelon (seasonal). I also got a drink (which was extra) called Danielle's Dreamsicle Crush (menu states it has Smirnoff Whipped Vodka, triple sec, fresh-squeezed orange juice and a splash of lemon-lime soda). It was so yummy, that I had a second, however I did not really need that second one though. We both started off with the crab soup and then dived into trays of crab and the extra fixings. The crab soup was just okay (I'll pass on that next time). The other side items I made sure to taste and were amazed they were so good. The hush puppies were delicious (I wanted to take them home, so I ate a lot of those). The fries were not your typical hand-cut thin fries - they looked more spirally but thicker and those were good too. I had at least 2 of the corn and could only eat 1 of the cornbread - those items could be a meal in itself (I still had to make space for the crabs, so could not eat too much). The food was plentiful, and the crabs were a good size. I am not a big fan of having to crack the crab and then clean it out to go find meat, but knowing I was coming here, that did not matter as I heard about how great their crabs are and so I pushed that to the side to enjoy my visit here. The crabs were delicious, meaty and had the right temperature and was well seasoned. For what I paid for Option A, it was worth it, and I would do it all over again. Our waitress, Hannah was great too. She came at the right times checking on us and knew when to bring in a new tray with more crabs. Hope to get her again on my next visit. The other employees I came in contact with showed great service as well. If you haven't checked this place out, you should. It is worth visiting, even if it is just once. read more

I came here for AYCE seafood, found this place through Mikey Chen the Youtuber, and I was not disappointed especially after driving nearly 4 hours to get here. It had just rained a little bit, but we still go to sit on the deck which still had some airflow for outdoor seating wise. Some staff members wore there masks. I was very happy to know that they had an online waitlist. So make sure you check it before you go because the wait could get up to 90 minutes! We came on a Saturday afternoon at around 3:40 PM and there was.a 25 minute wait. Not terrible at all when you join the waitlist online, we got seated immediately when we checked in. We went all out for the Option D for all you can eat. Unlimited snow crab legs, Maryland crabs, clams, shrimp, popcorn shrimp, and fried clam strips (which unfortunately they were out of). I was honestly a bi disappointed with the steamed clams. They didn't have much flavor and just tasted like they were sitting there for a very long time. Like not very fresh. But the shrimp had great flavor, the popcorn shrimp was surprisingly very good (It actually was real shrimp just fried! I had low standards for popcorn shrimp from previous experiences). The Baltimore crabs were pretty big! Doused with a ton of old bay seasoning, The snow crab lets were definitely the highlight because they were the largest snow crab legs I've ever had! And they tasted amazing! Yes you have to work for your food but it's totally worth it I promise. For drinks we got the upgraded blood Mary which i thought at the end of the day was very redundant since we were getting all you can eat seafood. I think getting the regular would had been just fine. The grapefruit crush was a bit too sweet for my liking probably because of the triple sec. The waitress was super nice and attentive in always making sure with whether we needed more food or not. I appreciated that because most all you can eat places wait for you to ask them to order. I would definitely recommend this place if you're willing to splurge on the AYCE, go for the Option D. Avery's is an extremely popular place (45 minute wait on a Tuesday night when we went) and for good reason! Our meal there was outstanding. Their system to deal with the wait times is actually pretty efficient - no reservations, but they have an online waiting room where you sign up and it counts your time down online. You show up with about 15 minutes remaining and check in. Obviously not as easy as being able to set up a reservation in advance (as some nights run very long waits), but if you are in the area it is definitely worth it. The food and drinks for the adults were both excellent. We had a Maryland crab soup (tomato based, not creamy), which was very tasty but not a must try. We then had the crab cake sandwich and the shrimp salad sandwich, which were both among the best versions of each that we have had - fresh and delicious. The shrimp salad wasn't small bits of shrimp, but whole large shrimps - I'm getting hungry again just typing this! The kids meals were also very solid, with lots of choices. One kid got the popcorn shrimp, one cheese quesadilla ("mmm, it's the best"), and one pretzel bites. Many options you can choose from for the side as well (although all 3 chose the Mac and cheese). My husband and I hit traffic and were surprised that there was already a wait when we arrived 30 minutes after opening. We way over-ordered and started with the crab pretzel and rockfish bites. My wife and I visited in the late evening on a Friday. No reservations were needed and just a few open parking spaces when we arrived. The staff was excellent and the service was very good. I give the service and staff 5/5. We enjoyed the atmosphere and it absolutely felt like a seafood restaurant between the decor and seafood scent. My wife got the cream of crab and mussels. Both were good. I had the Rockfish imperial and it was average. I don't feel as if I received a good cut from the fish. It was fine, but not what I'm used to having at other restaurants. I would not get the rockfish on a return visit. It may just be that I am spoiled growing up near the bay and being surrounded by seafood restaurants that I expect everywhere to be just as good as the places I grew up with. We have lived in the area of Avery's Grill for nearly 15 years. A neighbor raved about how good was the food, so we decided to give it a try. We chose the pick-up option and waited almost one hour for our order to be ready. When we arrived, the place was packed and cars lined the streets. Wow, we thought this was a great sign. A parking spot was found and I went to the front desk. The young man was quite courteous and directed me to where I could pick up our order. The young lady at the register barely looked my way and it turned out that our order was on the counter. I paid and left with the food. What a disappointment! The photo I posted was of the stuffed flounder. It turned out that the top of the flounder was 'cooked' but the bottom half was near raw. The potatoes appeared a little overdone; however, they were okay. The crab stuffing was okay as well. It's not worth describing my hubby's meal. Overall, it was a pricey experience with a lack of taste and unappetizing appearance. One last thing, they didn't provide one item of our order. We felt it wasn't worth the trouble to go back and get it. We won't go there again. Two stars for the restaurant and five stars for the young man at the entry! read more

This was EXACTLY what we were looking for in a seafood spot for dinner. We were in the area on the way to a festival and stopped by on a Saturday around 4:30p for dinner. They had a 35 min wait but found a table at the bar downstairs (several tables open) so we went and ate there. Brown paper on the tables, reasonable prices and well-cooked seafood. The mussels were delicious!! The snow crab legs were cooked perfectly (none were stuck to the shell) but a bit small so just know what you're getting for the price. The clam strips were a good size but slightly burnt. I was not happy with the stuffed rockfish as it was underseasoned for the price. The hush puppies were good. The watermelon wasn't ripe at all so a little disappointing on a hot summer day. The staff were friendly and just a bit busy. No one had masks on, for those who are worried. It's a great, casual seafood place that is huge and you definitely want to get added to the wait list before heading over if they're busy. However it's a cool spot and worthwhile! We were greeted quickly by everyone, and our waitress came by and took drink orders promptly. We tried the super bloody mary which came with olives, shrimp, and a crab claw. SO LARGE and SO YUMMY. I'm used to Calabash style cooked fish, and since moving to the north it's been difficult to get just the right kind of fish that reminds me of home. I've lived across the street from this place for four years and finally got to try it out. IT WAS AMAZING! Service was fast and friendly. Multiple servers checked on us all the time and had everything refilled in a jiffy. They were truly wonderful. The crabs were AWESOME. They were plump, juicy and tasted so good. Super impressed with the quality. They had different levels of AYCE that included different items. We chose AYCE "C" which included clams and steamed shrimp along with MD crabs, hush puppies, cream of crab soup (for a upcharge) cornbread, fried clams, steamed clams, fried shrimp, steamed shrimp, French fries and corn on the cob. SO MUCH FOOD, and I loved every minute of it. The soup was sub-par but everything else was delicious. Their regular entrees looked decent and seemed like they had a wide selection.
