I'll state the facts: I completed a purchase through Priceline.com and got a total rental rate of $86.10. When I got to the Avis attendant first tried to upsell me a Infiniti QX56, keep in mind, that I requested a standard (Toyota Corolla). It was just me and girlfriend, so no need for a luxury SUV that seats 8 people. They then tried to clown me in front of my girlfriend by saying, "oh don't you want to drive your girlfriend in something nicer than a Corolla?" I politely refused. They then went down each class of car that would have cost more when I had already decided that I was fine with Corolla...I mean I had to hear all of the features of pretty much every other car they have that costs more. Then I had to listen to the GPS speech, I told the lady that it's 2014 and me and girlfriend have the iPhone 6 so we're good on navigation. She then countered that the GPS they offer is somehow much better, I started tuning out, and then still refused. Then it was the entire ordeal about insurance, I was then pressured into getting all of this useless insurance. I informed them that I'm covered through Progressive and AAA, but then I had to sit there and listen to another speech about insurance! After what was supposed to be just a pickup turned into a 15 minute monologue I was just honestly so ready to get on with my vacation! I signed the stupid screen, but in my rush forgot to see that they'd still tacked on like $105 extra dollars!! I tried calling customer service to explain my case, but of course that guy was like, "well you should have read what you signed." I really don't care what I signed because the $100 doesn't matter as much as me not being insulted in front of my girlfriend and having to listed to awful speeches, I just want to rent a car for the price I paid for online! My advice, book directly through Budget, this was my first and last time with Avis. read more

The lady at the Preferred counter deliberately tried to screw up our evening: I'm a preferred member and went directly to the preferred counter to ask if there are any other cars available, besides the one that was assigned to me during the online booking. The lady who worked there at 10:45pm on 6/16/18 looked like she wanted to go home and was annoyed by my presence there. She told me that all she has are the cars in lots F1-F12, and i can choose any. I asked if she knew which cars were there, and she said she doesn't know and i have to go see, pickup the car i like and show my ID to security at the gate. The woman didn't give me the rental agreement, and i did not have any, nor did she knew which car i will choose - so she deliberately set me up for failure, and back/fourth when i get to the security gate. Of course the security guard at the gate did not have our rental agreement either, and said that my name needs to be assigned to the car that i drive out - so she send us back. At that time, the preferred counter was already closed, and another rude lady who was moving cars around send us to the general counter. After waiting in line for the general line, another lady at the line did re-assign us the car that we picked, however, she said that she just got there and don't know what happened and can't help us further with the 40 minute back/fourth runaround that we deliberately were sent on - no upgrade that is, and that "I can talk to the manager when I return the car to see if anything can be done - are you joking me? Why do i want to waste more of my time talking to your manager when i'm dropping off the car and running to my plane... you could have fixed this situation by giving me an upgrade that i asked for to compensate for my inconvenience, instead you just did bare minimum of your job to print out rental agreement and your customer service of 0 (Zero) ended right there. The entire process wasted 40 minutes of our time because the woman at the preferred counter deliberately send us on our way without re-assigning a new car that we picked, nor printing out an agreement for us to show at the gate. If she hates her job, she should quit and find another one, and not ruin people's evenings to deliberately send them on a run-around. She definitely knew that we can't drive out without a rental agreement or car re-assigned... and just closed down her preferred hut and left home. Let her go and free her of this job that she hates please. I'm not going to use Avis anymore, and will take my business account elsewhere, thank you Avis of IAH Houston Airport! I had a prepaid reservation I made online for a full size vehicle for a five day rental. It could have been a quick 15 minute check-out of the vehicle, but since I had to return to the front desk multiple times while carrying my luggage, it took about 45 minutes with a lot of unnecessary walking back and forth from the car lot to the front desk. That is with no one else in line getting help! Vehicle #1, Volvo S60 T6 Wagon When I went to the booth to ask for the first car, they gave me a Volvo S60 T6 Wagon. The guy (Guy #1) was a total salesman (not in a good way, as if there were any "good" salesmen), trying to up-sell me (with an additional charge) to upgrade to the AWD Kia Sorento. When I didn't take his offer, he attempted to cast some fear into me by googling flooding on his phone and showing me some news articles online while telling me "the worst thing you want is to be stuck in a flood!" I thought he was such a strange person for behaving like that. All I wanted was the type of vehicle I had already reserved--no SUV, no AWD, no up-selling. I was not very fond of wagons, but accepted the offering anyways. When I got to the vehicle to do an inspection, I found that the windshield washer fluid was empty as indicated by the on-screen display. You'd think they would make sure the windshield washer fluid would be full for the next customer since it rains almost every other day there in Houston. You will most likely need to use it at least once a day. I walked around and noticed the tires were nearly bald on the sides (indicating the previous renters probably cornered and drove aggressively) with the tread dead even with the wear bars down the center of the tire. Knowing how much it rains and how I would need usable tires, I brought the keys back to the front desk and demanded another vehicle. Vehicle #2, Volve S60 When I got to the front desk (about 5 minutes since I was last there), there was a new guy (Guy #2) there that acted completely confused at the objections I had about the car. I guess they do not care what danger they are putting the customer in with such ill-maintained vehicles. Keeping in mind that the previous vehicle had tire issues, I immediately inspected the tires for wear. There was a good amount of tread left, however the rear left tire had what looked like damage from a very sharp object. See attached photo. Disappointed, I walked back to the front desk (now Guy #1 was there) and declined the vehicle reporting to him (keep in mind it was now a different person than the first person I spoke too--they must find it entertaining to keep switching front desk people every 5 minutes to confuse the heck out of everyone). The guy looked disappointed that I didn't take the bait of those two vehicles. He had to give me what I deserved and paid for. Vehicle #3, Ford Taurus Limited Since they did not have any other vehicles available that were in working condition, to my expectations, which I didn't think was too far fetched (i.e. full washer fluid, no bald tires, no chunks missing in one of the tires), they assigned me another vehicle in their sister company, Budget. The Ford Tauraus 2015 was a nice car--keyless ignition, entry, good power, fresh tires, leather interior, power everything. The mileage was decent at around 24-26 mpg for my trip, which included traffic, highway, good power for passing, etc. I am disappointed they would try to pass those first two vehicles by me. I am sure someone in a rush to get a car would have to suffer the consequences of these poorly maintained "budget" vehicles. I do not think it is worth the danger and risk it poses to the driver however. Remember to check your tires, brakes, etc. You might get a car not up to the quality you expect when driving on rainy roads. A car accident in another state is something you probably would not want to get into if it was possible to avoid. They are only getting an extra star for finally caving in from their salesmanship and giving me a safe car to drive! read more

Rented December 2021 avis at IAH. Front Windshield was broken before I left the lot. I took time stamped photos of the broken front window, and told Avis employees about it. They said "I wouldn't be charged and they recorded in my records". I got a letter in the mail charging me ~$250 for a broken front window. I provided the photos. They ignored those, and responded with a form letter "Our records do not reflect that you purchased either the Extended Roadside Assistance (RSN) or the Loss Damage Waiver (LDW)" and I am liable for the full cost. I will continue to argue it, but avoid using Avis/Budget. read more

I rent from them almost every week for work, and I've gotta say I'm pretty fed up with them. First of all, you can never, ever get in touch with them on the phone if you need assistance. It's an obnoxiously long automated message which always routes you to Avis central customer care, or disconnects you if you actually find an option to transfer to an agent. If they weren't a massive chain, it'd feel like a scam from that alone. They do have a good selection of cars, but many are in very poor condition. They've rented cars to me with blatant damage before (not telling me of course beforehand, so I freak out when finding it during the rental), and some are just plain filthy. If you return a car after hours, good luck getting them to actually check it back in and close the contract in the morning. Often takes several days and several calls (an incredibly frustrating call experience as outlined above) to close the contract. Also, why can't an agency as big as theirs actually staff someone 24/7? Hobby airport Avis does and they are so much smaller. The avis distinctive aspects are nice if you are preferred, like just taking your car and leaving. But make sure you check that car for damages, don't return it after hours, and you better never have a question that requires actually speaking with a live human there over the phone. read more

By far the worst experience I have had with a car rental company. I went in on Thursday after a flight from OC to Houston and picked up my vehicle. I waited a while in line to speak to a rep. They only had 2 reps with plenty of computers. That's not really my complaint though. My complaint is how the the whole thing is situated. They give you the space you need to get your car from inside the parking structure. This is my first time booking with Avis so I had no idea how it worked. They said you got out and down to the left, ok so here I go. I walked outside down to the left and was walking around waiting for personnel. No one was around so I finally figured it out that I had to walk myself to the designated space. I got to the car and in white letters written on the window it said "hard hold 12/18" ???? What? Ok so I go back to the counter and another woman helps me by the name of Rachel she was apologetic and nice then asked me if I had a preference in cars I said no so she gives me another space. I go out the the car and it was dirty and the items in the glove box were sitting on the floor with the glove box opened. It was a mess. Whatever I drove out because I needed to go before dark hit. I'm driving and the maintenance required signal comes on so I pullover and realize there is a maintenance card in the dash for the employees at Avis. Ugh!!! Here I go back to the parking lot because I had a long drive and did not want thIs car to breakdown on me in the middle of no where. Mind you this is a HUGE car rental center so it was a hassle. I go all the way back to the counter and tell them that this was my 2nd time back and 3rd car I needed and asked to waive the gas fee. She didn't bother to say yes or no just undermined my question all together. Rude. The whole time I'm hauling my big luggage like an idiot while these ladies at the counter are just chit chatting with no care in the world. People have to get places. So they gave me my new car and here I go for the 3rd time to look for my car which now happens to be on the waaaaay far end of the parking lot along with my big luggage. I have rented many many times from this car rental area at IHA and it's always with Alamo but thought I'd take my chances with Avis because the rate was cheaper. Never again. I will pay the extra money next time to rent with Alamo. They treat people better at Alamo as well. Lesson learned. read more

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS LOCATION! Front desk people are pleasant. But the people at the check out gates to leave the airport are incredibly rude. Terry H was very unprofessional and condescending. At one point he started yelling at me demanding an apology! All over me choosing a different car than I was assigned! I was told by the front desk that if I did not like my car, I could chose another in a designated row for the same price, which I did. Terry H freaked out on me over this, telling me I committed a serious violation. There is never an excuse to yell at and be disrespectful to customers Terry! The Avis rental location at IAH told me they only had SUVs but they would charge the economy car rate (which was pretty high without discounts). It was 1 a.m. and I had to be at work in 7 hours, so we hurried through the endless 'initial here' fields and I departed. Later while reviewing the bill for the five day rental there was a fee of $150, and I noticed on the agreement I had 'accepted' 1 SGU 30.00/DY. A quick web search revealed this is a 'Select-n-Go upgrade', which means I was charged to upgrade to the SUV and not the economy car rate. This is a sleazy practice as I was explicitly told I would be charged for an economy. The fee was likely displayed on the many screens I had to swipe through, but regardless the person at the counter lied and having an upcharge under a non-descript acronym is deceptive. Fortunately there are many other rental agencies, so I will avoid Avis for any further rentals. On that topic, I've had great experience with the Hertz at IAH, and I will rely on them for future rentals. read more

I priced rental cars for a Texas vacation, our cheap airline ticket was to Houston. The car rental prices here seem to be a bit more than I prayed recently in San Antonio. Avis was the lowest priced car I could find... opted for the cheapest car a Ford Focus or similar Payed in advance and got $20 off. A week rental cost $177 with taxes fees etc. etc. It was $278 - way too much in tax and fees. Get on the bus and go to rental car facility. When I got to the rental counter there were 5 or 6 stations but only 2 clerks working, and a line of 5 customers waiting. When I got to the counter I had to answer all the questions again that I entered on line. They need more staffing and the check in process could be faster for non-preferred customers. I was not charged for the toll optional fee, and I did not get on any of the toll roads. We needed up Nissan Versa, dirty on the bottom, and very small. I had uncomfortable seats, rode rough, and though I did not check mileage, I could tell it was not that great as I bought gas 3 times. You get what you pay for. I should have played an extra $5 /day for a larger car. Return was easy but we should all complain about the taxes and fees. Maybe an off airport place would be less, but less convenient. read more

The car itself was fine; it's the customer service that leaves lot to be desired. I returned my car on 19 July and on 20th realized I had forgotten something in it. I called as soon as I realized by leaving message in Lost and Found extension. On 21, received called saying they found it and I should call their number. This is when the "I want my stuff back" nightmare began. NO ONE has returned any calls, I have not received my found items. I left my address and credit card number, but to no avaiI; have been calling nearly every day to get a person to call m back. :-( I then called AVIS corporate; although the rep tried to be helpful, no result. She orginally didn't change my name on the reservation, so I had to go back and get a new contract. Did that and for some reason I will can't leave. So, was hoping it was a one time event. But returning the car was just as bad. No one to check us in downstairs, like I had done every other time here, the guy who reluctantly directed us upstairs as an alternate option was rude. Then got upstairs and at least this lady was "concerned" about helping us as she tried to focus. But it was obvious another supervisory role person was trying to instruct her on following up with some reports that seemed more important than the client......I think this franchise just simply has a leadership issue. Husband and I arrived in Houston and reserved a Jaguar F Pace. They couldn't locate that car in their lot but they did give us an acceptable Luxury SUV instead (same class of vehicle). We were told about a curbside service in which you bring the car back to the lot, hop in the backseat and an Avis employee would bring you to your gate rather than taking the shuttle. We told the gentleman that we would be getting our return flight very early and he assured us that someone starts this service around 3-4 AM every day. So we did it. Upon return/ arrival we were told by the lot attendant that no one ever comes in that early for the curbside service. So we then had to go inside to complete paperwork and get the refund for the curbside charge. We were a bit upset because we specifically asked about the time and it threw off our morning schedule and then had to rush a bit. I would book with Avis again, I'd just be more careful of the "upselling". read more

Sorry to say, but here is another bad review, After renting from Avis, Houston Hobby Airport location, I thought I would be happy. Wrong! The staff is nice just long enough to get the customer to sign the contract. I had a vehicle towed, and was still willing to pay the rental and take up the issue of an illegal tow with the tow company. I was not able to do that because a rental contract gave me no rights to retrieve the car. After I asked the company to pick up the vehicle, because as renter, I could't pick up the car as the legal owner. I explained, that because I couldn't pick up; I would not be able to returned on time. After being told that someone with Avis would pick the car up, they just didn't. No excuses, they just didn't. The car stayed at the tow company's starge lot for almost two weeks. I was given a bill with two fees of 888.00 each. After demanding an explanation, I was told that I had to cover their cost. Excuse me!!! I asked that the vehicle be picked up to avoid a storage cost. I paid for the cost of a tow and everything they could think of to bring my bill to 1,600.00 over the cost of the rental it's self. I am making it a practice not to do business with people who show me such disrespect. I work hard for my money, and they should appricate the fact that I would not have just left the vehicle at a storage lot, knowing that I would be charged by the day. Just avoid them. I now have the time and expense of disputing the charge on a national customer service line and department. Be careful for the Holidays. read more

My wife travels a great deal and always attempt to use Avis for car rental. We do the same in our personal travel. Avis is very good about upgrades for regulars and we always come into contact with professional and friendly staff. One advantage of being a regular at Avis is not having to go through the up sell you encounter when renting a vehicle. We did recently with another agency and it made me wonder how many times I had to say NO to all the up selling. If Avis does that too they don't do it with us. read more

NEVER RENT A CAR FROM AVIS!!! Going to my sister's funeral and received a car with cat urine and deodorizers so thick I had headache and allergy attack. First Avis said they didn't have any more cars, then Avis promised a day off rental price if I would just keep the car, but that was a lie. The car itself was ok. It made this godawful loud sound like an airplane taking off throughout my whole 4 hour drive on the freeway from DFW to IAH. I ended up taking an Advil because of the sound, still not sure why it captured all that noise. It was a light car so moved around easily on the freeway and I needed a good amount of distance to break safely. Everything was tolerable until I dropped off the car and realized they doubled the charges without notifying me and charged me for an upgraded car instead of the one I had agreed to. VERY sneaky. When calling their customer service, I spoke with three different agents and all had very different opinions on how the issue had come about. None of them were convincing. Anyways I was told that the matter should be resolved within 48 hours but I am definitely not trusting their word, I will be calling back in two days. On the bright side, three out of four of their representatives over the phone were very professional and well mannered,but one was EXTREMELY rude. I had to cut him off and end the conversation just to call back and talk to someone else. Oh and also the Bluetooth in the car didn't work so couldn't talk to anyone over the speaker in the car which made it hard during the drive. read more

Absolutely horrible experience with these guys. Their customer service is one of the worst of any company I have ever dealt with. I left my $500 camera in the center console when dropping off my car. Completely my fault. Realizing it on the shuttle ride to the airport terminal, I called them almost right away. I was told they would look into it and call me back. They never did, so I called again before boarding my plane. At this point they told me the car was rented by a Preferred Customer and was gone. I was puzzled as to how this happened so quick (esp since someone would have seen my camera right there) but asked them if they could courtesy call that rentor to figure out how I could get my camera back. I was told they did not have a phone number for him? Um...ok, so I asked if they could e-mail and they said they will and would call back. They never called back. The next day they said the car would be back on 2/18 and they can't help me until then. Long story short after 5 days about a dozen calls, tweets, e-mails, etc. I got a voice mail today saying no one turned in my camera and they can help me no further. I rarely write reviews, but wanted to make sure if I can prevent someone from a similar experience then I have gained something out of this mess. The car also smelled like smoke, and the GPS that they charged me $94 did not work very well, but those issues seemed pretty minimal in the grand scheme of things. read more
