I work at an upscale hotel in Monterey. We had misplaced the keys to a guest vehicle that was departing. The associate working on 5/15/16 AM shift was outstanding. She made a very stressful situation stress free within minutes. Assisted us with getting our guest a new vehicle within minutes, and they were able to continue their road trip. She then allowed us to return the old car for the guest once we found the keys. For personal use, I usually go to hertz or enterprise in the past, this has now made me an Avis customer. DO NOT COME HERE. If I could give these people a negative number I would. I rented a vehicle in Dec for my sons birthday trip. I prepaid calling the Monterey number. They never answered. So it went to 800 number. I paid the reservation and arrived at the time I was sent an email to arrive. Upon arrival a man wearing a backward ball cap asked for my info. He then proceeded to share that there was no cars. I said how so? I have already paid and was told this was the time for my pickup. He said it's the holidays, it's busy. He said he couldn't help with the cancellation and referred me to the 800 #. I called the customer service # and they told me My refund would take 5-10 days. I was upset because I didn't get a car when I was promised after I had already paid. So I wanted my refund asap. It's now end of January and no refund. I called the Monterey office. Spoke to someone, she put me on hold and then someone else got on the phone to tell me that she couldn't help. That she doesn't know how long it would take for me to receive my refund. Because I purchased it through a third party probably Priceline. Which I didn't. I called their location and it was rerouted to their customer service directly. She proceeded to be super rude by saying she couldn't provide any Info besides call my bank. I said, so when refunds are done, how long do they take to process? She proceeded with I don't know because I don't do that here. I asked, when they have training how long are they told to give information to customers? She cut me off and said I was being aggressive and in her words "now I see why you weren't given the vehicle on the reservation" then proceeded to hang up on me. Absolutely nasty manager named Gavin to say the least. I had made a reservation for a Toyota Camry or similar but when I arrived the girl who seemingly did not want to talk told me she only had either a minivan or Toyota Sequoia left and that I'd have to pick one of those or else she'll cancel. I said I wanted a smaller car because I did not want to spend that much money on gas with the current prices out the roof. She called her manager Gavin to resolve this and put me on the phone with him. When I told I him I wanted a smaller vehicle or some relief on gas upon return, he told me: "you're an absurd guy, there is no way we do that for you. You either take one of these big vehicles or leave." He didn't even let me finish my sentence. I'm a nice and respectful guy who is never rude to people. But this guy Gavin was exceptionally rude and problematic. He sounded threatening on the phone. read more

This is not my first time write the negative feedback for this person and location .Dropped off vehicle at the Monterey location . The customer service representative Joshua charged me additional fuel charge of $4 . He was trying to explain to me their policy after I told him the vehicle was turned with full tank of gas , just filled up from blocks away . He started irritating after I refused to pay the fee and asked him to go out to check on my fuel gauge. After a few confrontations , I was finally able to get the fee adjusted but the 11.11% concession fee of $18.74 still stayed . So the final bill still shows $22 more than what I supposed to pay from my original reservation , which included tax and fees . Joshua is the worst employee of Monterey location, he has really bad temper and attitude towards to the customer when things are not going to his way . Joshua has no customer skills and doesn't know how to talk to guests nice and patiently. He needs to be fired or aggressivly to be trained by customer service experts ! So anyone who drop off your car at this location , watch out your final bills , Joshua will charge you all unnecessary fees ! read more

This was, hands-down, the worst experience I've ever had at any car rental--or anywhere, period. The Monterey Airport Avis staff was shockingly rude and utterly unprofessional. I was outrageously overcharged--$800 for just 2 days--with zero transparency. When I asked Tammy about the daily rate, she snapped that she'd already told me (a blatant lie) and refused to explain. When I pressed for clarity, she accused me of harassing her and became aggressively hostile. I'm beyond furious and disgusted. Unbelievably rude desk attendant. Was doing a drop off return, asked him for a pen to write the mileage down and he literally chucked it across the counter. Then I tried to put the key in the drop box and dude just snapped at me and said "Leave it on the counter." Worst service in ages, Enterprise is always much better. Travis at the Avis counter is an angel. I walked up with no reservation, needing to leave the next morning on an emergency. All the other rental car companies told me they had no cars and did not attempt to assist me in any way. Travis worked a miracle, while remaining calm and encouraging; he found me a car I could afford within minutes. Rented a car this morning, from a guy named Joshua. Got there 15 mins early and was scolded by him, "Your reservation is at 8am!". I said, But I thought you open at 7am. Him: We do, but I'm doing inventory, come back in a little while. Ok Jump in car (Beautiful Mazda 6), and a bit later, the CHECK TIRE warning light starts going off... NONSTOP! We pull over, see nothing unusual so continue on our way. AGAIN, the CHECK TIRE warning light flashes and beeps. We pull over again, do a DETAILED check of all tires and this time we notice a chunk of rubber missing from front right tire, AND a rip in the left rear tire! (I took pictures). We call their hotline and get recording after recording, then finally get A LIVE person who past me to another recording (because it wasn't his department), pushed 2, 1, 1, 1, 0... FINALLY another live person!! Explain the situation, told them I was 2 hrs from home. He said...drive home and call me from there. Demitrious took my number, and said ASK FOR ME. I get home, call the Roadside number he gave me, ask for him...Um, no one here by that name, I can help you. Explain EVERYTHING AGAIN!!! "It will be 3 + Hours before we can bring you an exchange vehicle." I was PISSED, and said...I will return it myself! Last January 14 I rent a car from San Diego to drop the car in Monterey California and in our way back my daughter drink water for one bottle that was underneath the passenger side seat because she took was our water so I check the car and I found 3 more bottles I can't believe Avis said they clean and sanitize they vehicles so I took my daughter to our family doctor to do the COVID test Just to be sure and safe after that I call customer service to complain and they just said sorry. Our experience with the Avis rental car staff this morning was not a positive one. The manager, Josh, used a condescending tone when I arrived, asking if I "was aware" of needing mileage information and his co worker stated that even though they inform customers, most of the time, customers don't bring the information to the counter. I requested a courtesy waiver for arriving 24 min late and Josh said he is unable to provide a waiver. I then called Avis customer service and the rep immediately provided a refund for the addl hour we were charged. The AVIS rep stated the counter staff, esp the managers are able to provide waivers. In addition, I informed Josh that we refueled the vehicle ourselves and he did not remove the fuel charge. :/ read more

Rented an all wheel drive car here. Enterprise didn't have anything or I'm sure I wouldn't be here writing this. Car was rented on a Tuesday. I asked how late they were open Friday for return. Answer was 10:00 PM. I arrive at 5:05 on Friday to find a note on the counter. (Holiday hours 9-5). All other rentals except Budget were there. My wife had followed me for a ride back home. She had to leave to pick up our animals, while I tried to resolve my car return on the phone. I had to set up an Uber account to get home. Phone service didn't speak English, they tried but failed horribly. The first one I could understand insisted that they were open until 10:00 PM, she passed me on and the next person told me the same. He said to leave a note on the key and drop in a drop box, which I finally realized existed. I fixed a note securely to the key stating date and time. Now it gets ugly. The following morning I called for 3 hours every 15 minutes and was rolled over to their national (International?) call center. None of these people spoke understandable English. The Last one asked me how she could help me, 3 times, she never understood I was saying "I want to confirm my car was received". At this point I jump in my car to drive back to the airport to confirm my rental return was received. First thing I do is call Avis while standing at the counter. The phone rings, no answer. I step back and notice all the other rentals have people present. I take their pictures. Then I notice a couple picking up a car and a lady shows up from the back room. I say "Oh, there is someone here". I ask why she didn't answer the phone and she says, "We don't answer when we're helping a customer at the counter". Or any other time for that matter. I told her I just called while standing at the counter and she said, I was busy in back. Yes, busy all morning as I called for 3 hours, not one answer. I had late charges on my bill, which she claims to have removed, even so, my bill ended up higher than quoted originally. I took my receipt and walked. I was about 20 feet away and she said "Have a nice day", with a tone of sarcasm. I called when I got home, same thing, no answer, rolled over to non English speaking, requested manager who listened to my complaint and said, I'll report it. End of story... I just tried calling six more times while writing this review and no answer. Fire the girl who worked the desk on 11/30/2019. Horrible service. Why can't I leave a zero star??? Avoid!!! read more

She demanded I trek and retrieve miles from odometer (robust and lazy)- she is so lazy she didnt even pull up the rental, she just asked questions and taakes your word for it: too lazy. ZERO STARS. First they rent me a car that's NOT economy like I RESERVED so they obviously do not know what "reservations" mean. Secondly the car they gave me just flat out died in traffic for over an hour while myself & others tried to get this car re-started. I finally get it started & go back to Avis, tell them my complaint & all I get is 'SO WHAT DO YOU WANT?" I shoulda reached across the counter & back-handed that stupid lil twerp if I wasn't in such a hurry & needed a car fast. Suffice to say, Avis has seen not just the last of my hard-earned dollars, but I will tell EVERYONE I KNOW, never, ever rent from Avis because this is how you get treated. My suggestion to Avis ? Let customers know that the car they are renting doesn't have or require a key & that its fully electronic. Showed up, reservation in hand for a two-day rental. My flight landed 30 minutes early, so the kid at the counter tagged me $66 extra for the ONE HOUR. Didn't mention it, or ask about drop-off time, swiped my card, then hands me the contract to sign with the inflated charge. I'm sure it will all come out in the wash when I turn the car in, but what a bozo. Also, the car tank was not full, and he was aware. Told me to bring it back 7/8 full. How am I supposed to do that? I think it was on purpose so customers bring it back full, and they save money by not having to top off the tank. Too many other choices to get stuck with Avis. Big mistake. read more

Avis Rental Car - Disappointed and Unsatisfied. Scheduled pickup at airport and provided our arrival info; however, flight was delayed and the office closed (10pm) before our arrival 1030pm. All other car rentals were open but Avis had not left any info with them. We called Headquarters at 1040 and told we should have called ahead and needed to call in the morning. Called In the morning when they opened and informed it would be a new booking and additional $200. Asked to speak to a supervisor at the headquarters level and informed they don't take calls. Avis -- Problems with communication and customer service. Definitely sharing as Enterprise not only matches but is coming out to pick us up. First time using Avis is not happening!!!!! read more

Cancellaon Policy If you need to cancel at least 24 hours prior to your scheduled pick-up me, you may cancel and request a refund less a $50.00 USD cancellaon fee. To cancel and request a refund you must submit a request on Avis.com, Avis.com.au or Avis.co.nz at any me before 24 hours of your scheduled pick up me by entering the reservaon number and last name into the appropriate fields on the View/Modify/Cancel page. Once the reservaon is displayed, click the "cancel" link and connue through the process to submit the refund request. If you return the vehicle before the original return date (early return), you will not be refunded any poron of the payment. First I was told the the SUV I'd booked 7 months in advance wasn't available - but would I like a town car ? Er No thanks and I'm off to Sequoia and Kings Canyon ! Then we see plenty of SUV's in the parking Lot - turns out I had a really good deal that they didn't want to honor. Then I'm told the gas gauge is broken - but don't worry just return it 3/4 full ................like that'll go down well in SFO ! Promised an upgrade when I head south and can change the car in another Avis - "It'll be fine" 1st chance we fill up and guess what - Gas Gauge works fine - so already out of pocket Arrive in Santa Barbara and head straight to Avis for the promised exchange or upgrade - guess what booking has been altered and now we're being hit with a $600 bill to change teh vehicle Call Avis Monterey and that's when it all goes bizarre - Some guy called Gavin (and he pops up in other reviews) starts shouting at me down the phone : screaming at me that I'm an idiot for booking the wrong sized car , telling me I abusive to his staff ( strange that there was a cop chatting about Carmel to my father in law all the time I was booking in and he didn't seem to have noticed this altercation - despite being 3ft away !!) Gavin tells me he's the man that'll "sort me out" if I ever come back - I explain he must have the wrong person - oh no !!! "You want to take me on pal ? You come back and talk to me - I'm that man " !!! Am I in a Scorsese movie ? Am I missing something ? COMPLAIN. THEY CALL COPS. As others mentioned, the going over time even 5 minutes will cost you a bunch and they won't tell you that until they have charged you. The manager called the cops on me when I asked to just keep the car another day instead of pay the over minutes charge. She said that's not possible, it would be a new reservation. She also said its up to you to tell them the mileage and not to be a liar like everyone else. I said what's your name, she said Colleen "see the plaque on the wall". Apparently she is the manager. Not a very good face of the company in my opinion. I am a father of three, an adult, and assertive. I don't let people walk over me or my kids. Imagine my kids face when this lady we borrowed a car from told the cops to come take daddy away because he was disappointed in how he was being treated. Think before you rent here. This is a seriously odd little rental car return in general. All vehicles regardless of affiliation are partitioned off into groups in one big super lot. If you drive in looking for someone to wave you in, you'll just drive in circles because no one is there at least not at 6 AM on a Wednesday. Find a parking spot labeled with your car rental company's logo, collect the keys and paperwork, note the mileage and head into the terminal on foot which is exactly adjacent to the rental lot. When we got to the counter, again, no one there. We took the paper jacket, inserted our paperwork writing down the mileage, car info and timestamp of the return and put it in the drop box with the keys. No issues later with the billing either. It's very efficient, convenient, easy... and odd. read more
