Renting from budget was easy, painless, and cheap. They had electric options as well as gas. We opted for the electric car and did a one day rental and dropped off directly to budget at sfo. This also reviews the Avis since they're all one big company probably. It was too good to be true. Pick up the van for a weekend camping trip with the boys right at 8. They hand me the keys and tell me to go to the space 40. Rental van had prior scratch damage. I thought that was reported already or made known. Nope. I'm now responsible. So here we are some weeks after the rental and because I'm the previous person that held the vehicle. It's now my burden to bear...great. I'm appealing their claim. So if/when they give you the keys, ask about previous damages or at least they go out there and walk the vehicle with you. Four months after renting a car from Budget, I was accused of breaking the headlight. The headlight was broken when I got the car and their staff acknowledged that it was already broken when I took the car and when I returned it. I also have pictures that the damage was there when I received the car. They are still trying to get me to pay for damages that were not caused by me. However this MONTEREY AIRPORT LOCATION is special! Some of the staff there are absolute complere a@@ Holes! I will never recommend this business to anyone. I Prepaid for an online rental agreement , however when I went to pick up my rental I was told at the Avis desk (there was no one at the budget desk) that what I paid was just a hold and they needed my credit card , I did tell them it was supposed to be prepaid, again I was told I had not paid. The original card I used online wouldn't authorize a second transaction in the same amount. I gave a different card and left with my rental. However when I returned the car early I received a partial credit for what I paid at the counter but they said the other would not go through on the orginal charge online. It went through and I have contacted customer service more than once and given them all information they asked for. I was told on the last occasion that their billing department would be issuing a refund. SAID REFUND NEVER CAME THROUGH. So in the long run I have paid for the rental 1 1/2 times what it orginally cost. Also on the first call to customer service the agent just kept repeating things I was saying and got rude when I asked to speak to a supervisor she asked why and never did put me through to one. We've been renting a car once a month from this location to visit my son who's stationed there. The last 2 times we've rented the car hasn't been full. The first time I was told they'd give me a credit this was a male rep at the counter, that never happened but I blew it off. This weekend we went rented a car again after waiting in line for quite a while due to the holiday weekend and long lines. The car once again was not full, but with it being so late at night, we decided not a big deal. We would address it later return the car Monday morning at 4:00 AM with a note on the rental agreement stating that it was frustrating that the car was not full with the receipt of filling the car the mileage and everything come home a few hours later after calling customer service to handle the situation because that location specifically has to handle the location. We get our final receipt and which they charged me fuel service charge of $60 on full vehicle so I called the location and it transfers me to customer customer service customer service explains that I need to call and it may take several times of calling but call and only let it ring a couple times and then I can speak to somebody at that location so I do just that the first two times I'm hung up on the third time someone answered the phone, but let it sit on the counter and you could hear the keyboard clicking and then they hung up the phone not knowing what was going on because I'm doing what customer service told me to do. I call back again and which a gentleman at 10:40 AM answers the phone and starts telling me that it's closed to call back tomorrow morning. I explain I just need to talk to somebody to figure out what's going on and he starts getting nasty at me that I've called a ridiculous amount of times and I said I just need to ask a question and he starts yelling at me in the phone that they're closed and he just happens to be there doing work to call back tomorrow and I said can I please get your name sir and he hung up on me so I have to call customer service again to file a formal Complaint and just wait. We have given our customer service to this company for the last four months just this location, but this will be the last time. This was extremely frustrating and irritating and the customer service handling the situation at that location is very inconsiderate and disrespectful. Called today, Tuesday, September 3rd To speak to the location, the car was rented from directly, asked to speak to the manager was told that the gentleman I speaking to was a manager. I informed him of the situation to be called a liar that they would never rent out cars, not full even though I told him I had proof then told I was a liar. Customer service would never tell me to call multiple times to speak to somebody directly then when I asked him about calling yesterday and who would've answered the phone, he said he was there yesterday I proceeded to start to tell him how frustrated I felt the way he was treating me over the phone and then he told me he needed to put me on hold and put on hold for 14 minutes, which I'm sure was really just his way of not dealing with the situation. The best customer service at a busy time! Had a quick turn around-trip from Monterey (Marina) to LA and back. I've never rented a car. Nathan handled everything expertly, and with extreme concern for customer service as I was a nervous newbie. Even with a few people behind me, and we all started talking and having a nice conversation, he was swift efficient and covered all the bases with patience. Just for the customer service alone, I would definitely be back. In fact, I might be renting more cars since it was so easy for my trips out of town. He put me in a Ford Explorer which was perfect for me and three cranky 14 year olds, who did not want to come on this quick trip. Returned a car to Monterey, and my husband left a new blazer (Christmas gift) in the back seat. We went back after realizing it, about an hour later and Nathan at the counter was on it! He first called down to the cleaning area, but they were at lunch. So he left the counter (no one in line) and ran down to the car and came back with it! When there was a problem with my reservation she told the guy helping me at the counter, right in front of me, that they are short on cars, now's the time to be strict with the rules. After marking my friends drive 20 mins back to the airport as they told me someone else would need to rent the car for me, she all the sudden decided to help me after lecturing me that I never should have changed my name when I got married, this mixup would have never happened...seriously?! Budget Car Rental is one of the worst places to rent from besides the fact it is conveniently located at the Monterey Airport (rent from others). We did not see any major errors to the car besides a few scuffs inside. It was when we drove and about 2 hours in, we received a notification from the car our windshield fluid is low.... really? We had an additional 4 hours to go and it's not our job to refill. Then, we noticed the caps on the tires for the air were gone.. is this new? On our way back, from our trip, the Maintenance notification appears. Mind you, going through the grapevine on the 5, isn't exactly something you want to see. When I called to discuss these issues, the employee working cut me off every single time I tried to communicate to her, her responses back when she did give me time to finish were short and condescending. She mentioned the maintenance notification is routined and when they service the car the business doesn't always turn the notifications off. Still finding this hard to believe but I asked if there was a chance this notification could go off, why was that not specified at pickup? and what about the windshield fluid and the caps? If the car is getting serviced as you say then at the very least the windshield fluid would be full. Every response was an excuse and it's up to us to return the vehicle at any location if something is wrong with it. I did not appreciate her attitude, her lack of customer service, and disrespect. On Sept. 9, 2021, I traveled with my daughter into the Monterey, CA airport, where I arranged a car rental with Budget/Avis. Since my daughter is young and had never rented a car, I took care of all the details, including renting the car online, then initially speaking with a woman named Colleen Brown at the site, who told me that she was the owner/operator of the franchise. Unfortunately, our conversation deteriorated rapidly due to an issue that began when Ms. Brown when she found out I couldn't hear her. I was wearing a mask, as was Ms. Brown, and there was a wall of plexiglass between us and a small slot in which to converse. The airport was noisy, and I have some hearing loss, which seemed be unconducive to a proper conversation.  I tried hard to hear Ms. Brown speak to the best of my ability. I kindly asked her to repeat herself several times because I couldn't hear her, and apparently it angered her. I then asked her co-worker Mr. Gavin Brown, who was not behind plexiglass (nor was he masked) if he was vaccinated, so I could speak to him closer and hear him better. I wanted to be safe and not catch the Covid-19 virus, and as he was not masked like everyone else in the airport was that day. But he got very offended and started yelling at me saying that he didn't get vaccinated, had already had Covid-19, and refused to answer any of the questions I had regarding the rental. Then, he kept yelling at me, asking several times: "What's wrong with you? Is there something wrong with you? Because you need to leave!" I was absolutely appalled at his actions as well as the actions of Ms. Brown, who by that point, refused to speak with me any longer. My daughter stepped in and completed the transaction while both Ms. Brown, Mr. Brown and another employee (name?) unleashed a verbally assault on me in full view of other customers watching the entire scene.  This scene went on for a full 15 minutes or so. I was absolutely shocked and appalled at this kind of behavior coming from people working at an Avis/Budget business!  When my daughter and I left the counter to pick up our rental car in the lot, a couple who had observed the entire incident at the same counter, came over to me to see if I was O.K. and I burst out in tears, because I wasn't O.K.. They couldn't believe the way that the employees treated me either. This incident has severely traumatized not only myself, but my daughter as well. We will not be renting cars at Avis/Budget again after this nightmare of an experience. There were two other issues that we had was upon turning our car in. There was no attendant on the premises and no way to contact anyone by phone to assist physically disabled passengers like myself. My daughter had to tote 2 full suitcases, a camera bag, and a backpack up a hill from the parking lot to the airport all by herself with no assistance. There was no way to call anyone for assistance at the rental car parking lot either. I will be filing a report today with the ADA regarding this incident so that no other disabled person has to go through a struggle like this again. Also, we were charged for gas, even though we returned the car with a full tank. How I wish I had read the reviews here before I made this reservation! I give this company ZERO stars. read more

I am so pissed off with this Budget rental at Monterey airport. My plane was three hours delayed getting into Monterey. I had confirmed and paid for reservations with Budget for Sunday. Well they closed at 2 pm on Sunday...plane didn't land due to mechanical delay until 3:40 p.m. Well the Budget rental was closed. No keys. No rental. NO transportation. Screwed. Rented an all wheel drive car here. Enterprise didn't have anything or I'm sure I wouldn't be here writing this. Car was rented on a Tuesday. I asked how late they were open Friday for return. Answer was 10:00 PM. I arrive at 5:05 on Friday to find a note on the counter. (Holiday hours 9-5). All other rentals except Avis were there. My wife had followed me for a ride back home. She had to leave to pick up our animals, while I tried to resolve my car return on the phone. I had to set up an Uber account to get home. Phone service didn't speak English, they tried but failed horribly. The first one I could understand insisted that they were open until 10:00 PM, she passed me on and the next person told me the same. He said to leave a note on the key and drop in a drop box, which I finally realized existed. I fixed a note securely to the key stating date and time. Now it gets ugly. The following morning I called for 3 hours every 15 minutes and was rolled over to their national (International?) call center. None of these people spoke understandable English. The Last one asked me how she could help me, 3 times, she never understood I was saying "I want to confirm my car was received". At this point I jump in my car to drive back to the airport to confirm my rental return was received. First thing I do is call Budget while standing at the counter. The phone rings, no answer. I step back and notice all the other rentals have people present. I take their pictures. Then I notice a couple picking up a car and a lady shows up from the back room. I say "Oh, there is someone here". I ask why she didn't answer the phone and she says, "We don't answer when we're helping a customer at the counter". Or any other time for that matter. I told her I just called while standing at the counter and she said, I was busy in back. Yes, busy all morning as I called for 3 hours, not one answer. I had late charges on my bill, which she claims to have removed, even so, my bill ended up higher than quoted originally. I took my receipt and walked. I was about 20 feet away and she said "Have a nice day", with a tone of sarcasm. I called when I got home, same thing, no answer, rolled over to non English speaking, requested manager who listened to my complaint and said, I'll report it. End of story... They don't take care of their customers and provide horrible customer service. Even worse, they question you as if it's your fault they provided such a bad vehicle. I have rented many cars from the Budget at the Monterey Airport and the rental process is always seamless and smooth. My car is always available and ready upon arrival and the staff are always friendly and courteous. The last place I rented a car from gave me all the insurance scare tactics and the clerk got quite pissy when I would not buy their rental insurance coverage. On top of that my car wasn't ready --it had to be fetched from another site across town and cleaned and I had to initial like 12 pages of documents. I decided to go back to Budget after this less than satisfactory experience. This weekend I rented another car from Budget and was pleased again with the overall experience. Scored a great rate too. When I called later to express concern and point out that their website states that all employees will be wearing masks and that it is CA law to do so inside public places, a different employee was extremely rude to me, saying that I could go elsewhere if I didn't like it and those are just the chances I take when I go out in the world. Pre paid for the car, returned it as agreed and put the key in the drop box since no employees were working at 8:00 am on a Friday. Budget proceeded to charge me $74.36 for another day because they never took key out of drop box. No help at all getting my money back at this point. Have my airline info, boarding passes and uber receipts from airport home. Eventually they will have to refund me since the car was sitting on their lot for an entire 24 hours but it shouldn't be this difficult. Guy working put me on hold and then hung up three times, Nov 24 3:00 shift. Don't recommend using their drop box. Hertz and enterprise had employees working. I did not rent a car from this establishment therefore I cannot speak to the quality of the car. However, I am a secretary and had to make travel arrangements for my boss. When I called the national number I received immediate help and had a confirmation emailed to me within a minute or two. Very professional and efficient. My boss picked up the car at the airport in Monterey, CA without a problem. When she arrived back to the office a few days later, she could not find her receipt. I called the rental office in Monterey, CA (over two weeks after the fact) and spoke to a very nice woman (didn't get her name, my bad!) who was extremely professional and very helpful. Once I gave her the confirmation number and confirmed my boss's name, she pulled up the receipt and emailed it to me immediately. Ended up being a jeep wrangler with no bluetooth, noisy roof and too high for my elderly mother to get into. I rented a car from budget for one day. I drove it for an hour and half and filled up the gas tank in Monterey. No one was at the counter when I turned in the key, so they said I didn't filled up my gas tank and charged me for gas. Basically paid for gas twice. When I called them, they were extremely rude and basically said they couldn't do anything for me. It's not about the amount they charged me, but how awful customer service. I have rented from Budget for decades- business and pleasure. Never again! Rented at Monterey Airport when in town for week of business. Have to go to Avis counter for Budget service. Long walk to car to find you can't see out of the windshield that's so dirty inside. Bring car back for early 6AM flight. Fill out paperwork at dark counter (says indicate gas tank level- I just filled it). Get home and see email receipt- charged $33.61 for fuel service). First I was told the the SUV I'd booked 7 months in advance wasn't available - but would I like a town car ? Er No thanks and I'm off to Sequoia and Kings Canyon ! Then we see plenty of SUV's in the parking Lot - turns out I had a really good deal that they didn't want to honor. Promised an upgrade when I head south and can change the car in another Avis - "It'll be fine" 1st chance we fill up and guess what - Gas Gauge works fine - so already out of pocket Arrive in Santa Barbara and head straight to Avis for the promised exchange or upgrade - guess what booking has been altered and now we're being hit with a $600 bill to change teh vehicle Call Avis Monterey and that's when it all goes bizarre - Some guy called Gavin (and he pops up in other reviews) starts shouting at me down the phone : screaming at me that I'm an idiot for booking the wrong sized car , telling me I abusive to his staff ( strange that there was a cop chatting about Carmel to my father in law all the time I was booking in and he didn't seem to have noticed this altercation - despite being 3ft away !!) Gavin tells me he's the man that'll "sort me out" if I ever come back - I explain he must have the wrong person - oh no !!! "You want to take me on pal ? You come back and talk to me - I'm that man " !!! Am I in a Scorsese movie ? Am I missing something ? If I could give zero stars I would. I picked up my compact on 21 May 2012 without any problems, but as I drove it around the next couple of days I noticed a problem with the transmission: even though it was an automatic, it was rolling backwards on hills. I was not comfortable driving it so back to the airport I go, where they swap me out for another compact. There didn't seem to be any issues with this one, until about a week and a half later when I came out and one of the tires was extremely low (nearly flat). I drove it to a nearby gas station and filled up that tire, and topped off the other three, which were all low as well. It was fine for about two days, but then went flat again. Another call to the office, and another drive to the airport for a swap. At this point, I was already frustrated with the whole experience. I had only been here less than three weeks and was already on my third car. I asked if they could upgrade me to compensate for the inconvenience of three cars and three trips to the airport but they literally laughed. A few weeks later, I got a phone call from Budget requesting a mileage update. I was just shy of the 5,000 mile mark so they said I had to swap it for yet another car so they could do an oil change (they also said I could bring it to Jiffy Lube myself, which I had no interest in doing: I am paying for the convenience of not having to worry about car maintenance and spending an hour in the shop for a car that is not mine did not appeal to me at all). I still do not understand why they gave me this car only weeks ago, knowing that it would be due for scheduled maintenance. So yet another trip to the airport (this makes four) for yet another swap. This car was by far the filthiest thing I have ever seen. It was wet, so obviously had just been washed but once we really looked at it, the wheel wells, inside the gas cap, under the bumpers, etc. were literally caked with reddish sand. The inside of the windows were covered in oil and grease from previous renters' hands (and apparently faces). It was disgusting. As soon as I got it home, my husband and I had to clean the entire interior and all the windows, inside and out. Obviously, I could have gone back inside, or returned for a fifth time to swap it for another car, but I really was/am just fed up with the whole ordeal. On 22 August, I received a frantic voicemail from a Budget representative telling me my credit card was declined. I understand that this is an important matter, but she was practically screaming at me on the voicemail, as though this was the 100th time they've had to call me about it (obviously it was the first). I called them back as soon as I got the message and told them they needed to call Citi and request a "force authorization". Shortly after, I received another frantic voicemail saying that the "force authorization" was declined and they would need another credit card. I'm not sure if you're familiar with how government travel works, but it is extremely common for cards to get declined due to the length of time it takes for the government to process payments to apply to our credit cards, which is why Citi allows "force authorizations". I contacted Citi myself and asked if there was any reason a "force authorization" would not go through. The customer service representative emphatically told me no, and noted that there was nothing showing on my account that one was attempted and/or declined. I called Budget back and told them the only way we could resolve the issue would be for them to get a "force authorization". Unfortunately, by this time, it was 5:30 and there was no one at the office that could help me. I was instructed to call back between 8-2 (you know, the most convenient times possible for someone who works during the day). I began trying to call at 8:50, then again at 9:50, 10:30, 10:50, with no answer. Finally at 11:40, I was able to reach someone who continued to tell me they couldn't do a "force authorization", even though I explained exactly how it needed to be done. Finally, they said they could basically put a hold on my personal credit card until the situation with my government travel card was resolved. The incident yesterday/today is really just the icing on the cake of this experience. I still have over a month left on my TDY so it's certain something else will come up between now and then. If I weren't restricted by the fact that the government made this reservation, I would certainly switch to another company. I have never been more disappointed with a car rental experience and will definitely never use Budget for my personal rentals again. Mind you, this my experience based on a 5 month rental at $900+ a month!! That's $4500, which is about 25% of the cost to PURCHASE one of these compact cars so you'd think I'd get better service. I had to drop off the vehicle at 05:40, I fueled up before dropping it off and made my way over, and due to there not being an attendant I just left the keys and the paper slip in the box- no big deal right? I go online to check the receipt. They charged me $13.99 for "Fuel Service" I have a receipt and a picture of the fuel gauge before I left the car. The tank was full. These people are crooks. I've been trying to call and of course there's no answer. No surprise since when I picked up the vehicle, the attendant was struggling to check out cars to the growing line behind me (grew from 2 to 7 people in the span of 10 mins). The phone kept ringing and he would answer and ask them to hold and then never picked it back up. That poor sap on the phone probably wanted to dispute their erroneous charges too. I was in such a rush, I didn't notice the charge when signing the contract. Stress free and convenient experience with this rental service! Reservation was done ahead of time via phone took 2-3 mins with friendly staff , very fast! Received a locals discounted rate, brand new Prius to drive with unlimited mileage and free coverage for the day with no extra drop off fee at any budget/Avis location in San Fran! The only thing I wasn't told about was the ping driver fee, but the guy at the counted still knocked of ten bucks off of that fee! read more

After I long day of travel and getting delay in all my flights I finally make it to the Monterey Airport to find out that Budget counter had close at 8 and I had a PAID RESERVATION!! No car available...had to take a taxi!! Very bad service!! Not nice at all read more

WORST car rental experience I've ever had. They show no appreciation at all for their customers' business. Rented a car for one day and drove only 30 miles. They automatically hit you with a $14 fee upon return of the car. Review your receipt!!! I had to ask what the $14 fee was (they barely said a word or acknowledged me, just handed me a receipt). It's a refuel fee because I didn't refill the car. Fine, but does one gallon of gas for using 30 miles cost $14?! They then proceeded to attack me for even questioning their pop up fee. I wanted to discuss the matter more, but I didn't want to miss my train. Rent from another car rental company!! But don't go to AVIS....the same employees work for both Budget and Avis at this airport. read more
