I had a long-term rental as my personal car was in the body shop; I had to extend that rental a few times due to replacement parts arriving damaged. After a third delay, Avis would not allow me to extend the rental period again, but allowed me to make a new reservation, for which I prepaid. So I made the one-and-a-half-hour trip to Asheville, dropped the car I had off, then walked across the street to pick up the new car only to be told they (meaning the local branch) do not honor reservations made the same day, and that they had no available cars. I told them I had literally just dropped off a car and would be happy to take that again, and the agent just pointed at the sheet of paper that said they do not take same day reservations. I called Avis customer service who told me that their system showed that there were cars available; they wanted to talk to the local agent, but he refused to talk to them, saying "I don't need to talk to them, I already told you". No apology, no help finding me an alternative way home. read more

Worst rental car experience. I'd avoid this branch if possible. Walking in, you see a wall of full-page warning/commandment notes between you and the agent - it's literally about 8.5' high. Don't do this; do that; you'll be charged for breathing wrong etc. (Think Delores Umbridge) No one greets you, though two people are behind the counter. One is a young, barely dressed guy in a small tank and smaller shorts. He never, ever looks up from his phone. The other is the person who will take care of you; she never, ever smiles. She takes care of the paperwork (the sound of the loud dot matrix printer might take you way back depending on your age), then the best part happens. She hands you the keys and waves vaguely at the mall exit outside the doors of the Avis. "It's outside, on the left. It has TX plates." Nothing more detailed than that. So you'll be left to wander around in the parking lot like someone who has forgotten where the heck they parked, hitting the key fob repeatedly and scanning license plates for row after row of cars. We found ours eventually. The car isn't that nice or well taken care of either. Lots of damage. Just an overall nope. read more

Can I give zero stars? How is this place allowed to stay in business? One hour before pick-up we got a voice message saying they cancelled our reservation because they have no cars. We tried calling but got re-routed to AVIS corporate, who tell us we still have a reservation and their system is showing plenty of cars. We finally get through to this location and they just blow us off, say they don't have any cars, and when asked what we are supposed to do they just hung up on us. Horrible service. I have never in my life had such a terrible experience with a company. I booked a rental through paisley jet blue (also never again) and got a price of 588 $. After my rental was returned, I got a final bill of 1111$. Apparently the Asheville Avis upcharged me for stuff I never agreed to, so I called them. Four phone calls and confirmations later, maybe about 2 hours of phone wait time, and I STILL haven't gotten my money back. And get this.... after a phone call where the agent stated 'you will receive a 258$ refund', the company CHARGED me the amount instead of refunding. I am currently on hold with someone at Avis customer service for the 5th time to try to get my refund. I have a case number, they have notes in all the phone calls, but they still can't get anything done. DON'T USE AVIS EVER. read more

Horrible customer service. We rented a vehicle while in town for a wedding and when the check engine light came on we called customer service. We were told to stop by any Avis location for assistance. That was a lie. We had to return it to the airport. When we arrived they asked if we topped it off with gas! NO!!!! THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON!!! No we did not bother to stop because we're only trading it in because YOUR vehicle failed. So off we go to get gas to exchange the car. I took a cab from the hotel to the rental car store. The lady there told me I didn't have a reservation because they don't honor reservations made by the national company. This was the worst rental car rental experience I have had out of dozens of times that I have rented cars. I thought it would be convenient to rent from this Avis at the mall. I reserved an intermediate car well in advance. When I arrived, there were handwritten signs everywhere that this was an independent business and Avis and Budget provided the cars. I was told I would be driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and when I objected, I was told it was either that or a pick up truck. Those were the only two cars they had to rent. I had no choice but to take the Jeep. It was only 3/4 full of gas and I was given a pink piece of paper to present when I returned it 3/4 full. I went out to the parking lot and found an absolutely filthy car inside and out. The inside smelled of that weird perfumey smell that they spray. I had no choice since I had no other vehicle and had to get to Atlanta, so I took this car. Within about two hours, the weird smell subsided and I could definitely smell cigarette smoke. The staff was rude and dismissive. I would never recommend this business. It would be better to go to the airport and rent from there. read more

They didn't give us any information about why we were able to book it online if it wasn't available. They said they could maybe help us at 1:30pm even though our reservation was for 9:30am. The staff were very friendly and conversational, but ultimately that's not what matters. A rental car company needs to deliver a car. I had a 9a reservation. My car wasn't ready for me until 10:10a as the rep said that she had to wait for someone to bring her more keys and that all their cars were reserved that day so she couldn't give me anything else. Much more convenient if you are in-town than going out to the airport. It is also less expensive to rent here than at AVL. Nice staff and easy to find in the mall. This location has been short on vehicles but that seems to be easing now with new car deliveries. There is never more than one representative and if there are others you might have to wait a bit. They work to make you happy but the car shortage has been a challenge. I like going to the mall as there are other stores nearby as compared to the airport. This is my "go to" location and I do rent cars often. read more

They put me in a car that had a weak battery. The car did not even get me home when I pulled over to a store to pick up something. it would not start backup again. I called them to report my car had not got me home and they sent someone out to give me a jump. Then they charged me $250 for it. I called them back up and told him I was not informed about a fee I would have to pay and I only had the car 30 minutes, so why should I have to pay for a car That did not even get me home on the very 1st day. They really show their greed. They stuck to their guns about making me pay $250 for a jump when the car had a weak battery to begin with. If zero stars were possible I would leave absolutely no stars. The "customer service " at this place was absolutely horrible. I don't even want to call it customer service because I was not treated like a customer and I was definitely not provided a service. Immediately upon getting there the lady at the counter, Angela Jacobs, had an attitude with me. At first I thought it was my imagination. But as the conversation progressed, it was apparent that it was not my imagination. She was not only extremely rude but very short with her answers and continuously cut me off as I was trying to speak. I asked her if there was a reason why she had an attitude with me and she just stared at me with a blank look on her face. I had a reservation for 2 o'clock and even though it was 1:45pm she told me that I had two people ahead of me so I would have to wait. I was confused by her telling me that so I asked her what she meant and she repeated herself in a louder more irritated tone. She told me that I would have to wait because there were two other people ahead of me. Again I asked her what did that mean because I had a reservation at two and since they close at two what is the process? Is the place going to stay open later to accommodate me or is she going to close the gate and forget about me the second I walk out of the office? The way she was acting I wasn't too sure that she wasn't going to do just that. Were they short on cars because people didn't return cars that day? How did she know if they were even going to return these cars at all? She didn't even try to reassure me that I would still be renting a car that day and not be waiting around for nothing? She wasn't explaining anything and basically just told me to wait. And wait I did....for 30 minutes. When I returned at 2:30 to see what the status of my vehicle was, before I could even get the question out, she looked up at me with an annoyed look and I just told her to forget about the car. I told her that she needed to work on her customer service skills because they were horrible. She told me with sarcasm and delight that she was sorry I felt that way and to have a good day. At that point I asked her what her name was and she screamed at me Angela Jacobs and proceeded to spell it for me. And as I walked out the door she screamed over and over again have a good day. Ironically, a few minutes later while we were standing in the parking lot, my daughter received a phone call from Avis telling her that her car was ready for pick up. My daughter asked the lady on the phone if she was the same lady who just yelled at her mother and was so rude to her mother inside the store. The lady immediately turned nasty on the phone and yelled "YES! I am Angela Jacobs!" Then she hung up on my daughter. What kind of crap is that?! I know that companies are hurting for workers but is this really the kind of bottom of the barrel, deplorable workers you want representing your company? And apparently she's not going anywhere because she's been nasty for a long time. Just look at all the previous reviews of this place. So Angela Jacobs, if that's her real name, must be related to the owner and they can't get rid of her. That's unfortunate. One final statement. I am a veteran. And I'm not saying this because I should be treated differently from any other customer because we all should be treated with dignity and respect (especially if you were shown that from the beginning). I drove from Fort Bragg to Asheville to visit my daughter before she starts college and to rent her a car to get around in while hers is being repaired and this was the treatment that was given to an army veteran? And to top it off my daughter gets hung up on?! If this is the way Avis/Budget car rental treats army veterans and retirees and their dependents, then when I get back to Fort Bragg, I'll be sure to let all my veteran buddies and the soldiers I work with on a daily basis know not to EVER rent cars from this company again! read more

South Tunnel Road Avis (Asheville Mall) has acquired a very sketchy reputation. They are within shouting distance of my house. But I will literally go to the airport Avis (a half hour away) to avoid them. In the four times I've transacted, three were nightmares. My latest (used them because I had to) experience was the same 'didn't have their act together,' followed by unbelievable indifference, followed by my having to get stern, followed by their back-talking the victimized customer as if it were his/her fault. I have dealt with Angela Jacobs the "agency operator" twice now and both times she was extremely rude and completely unhelpful. The first time she lied about refunding money (because the car was picked up with an empty tank), and the second time after the Avis location was moved she called me crazy because I was flustered after not being able to find the new location and parked the car in the wrong place. I let it go the first time but after the second time I was left completely speechless. Worst car rental place I had ever been to, rude workers. Moved locations in the middle of the work day. They told me over the phone they took prepaid cards because I didn't have a bank account, when I got here they told me they didn't take prepaid. So I went and made a bank account and went back and tried use my debit card to rent a car. They did a soft credit check (which doesn't look good at all on your credit) but they didn't inform me until after they did the credit check that they were doing one. Then told me I should have gotten a credit card and I would have been able to rent one. Something they could have told me at 9am this morning. Now it is 3pm, I have no car rented and my daughter's birthday party in South Carolina that we won't be able to do unless we somehow rent a car. Very displeased. read more

I booked an SUV through the Asheville airport website for Oct 8 2021 on a site (operated by Priceline) called AirportRentals.com. As it turned out the car was 30 minutes FROM the airport. I would assume that a website called AIRPORT RENTALS would be IN the AIRPORT. So I was going to have to take a Lyft to pick up the car and then drive back to the airport (ONE HOUR total driving) to pick up our group of travelers and our bags. I called and was not able to get anyone on the phone in this Avis/Budget offsite location which was beyond frustrating. But the national Avis/Budget rep said I could not DROP the car when returning until 10. Well, our flight was leaving BEFORE 10, as MANY flight do. I found out later that the off-site rental company was in a MALL. Come on, Avis, Get your self together. Piss Poor. And frankly embarrassing. We ended up having to take TWO very sketchy Lyfts and a shuttle back totaling $600 and frankly putting our lives in danger. BE BETTER. read more

After a decade of frequent business travel, I can honestly say this is one of the worst car rental experiences that I have ever had, and definitely the rudest, most unprofessional staff I have encountered. If you don't have time to read the details, just stop here and find a different place to rent a car in Asheville. Where to start? I took advantage of the Avis local pickup service. On the way to the location, the driver blatantly ran a red light and did not use turn signals. I will say though, that she was the only person at the office that was even close to nice. When I arrived, I saw they wanted to planned to give me a Ford explorer (significantly larger than the Escape and with significantly poorer gas mileage). I reserved a particular size SUV. I even called the location and had them note on my reservation that I needed that particular size, not a larger one. Avis is supposed to call you if they are changing your rental vehicle size to a larger class, but no one called me. The young lady at the desk was unapologetic and unhelpful. She said I could call the airport myself later and change to another vehicle. I asked her to call them, and she did, but she was unhappy about doing so and that was obvious. The airport did not have a smaller SUV at that moment, so I took the Ford Explorer, having no other options. The clerk wasn't apologetic about the situation. She did not care at all that I had been inconvenienced. She even said, "There ain't nothing we can do if we don't have the vehicle you reserve. We try to get you into something close to what you reserve. If someone tried to reserve a car we didn't have right now, they could do it." I understand that sometimes these things happen because other renters return a vehicle late or a vehicle needs unexpected maintenance, but what was hard to understand was why they didn't call to tell me ahead of time so that perhaps I could do something about it. I called Avis and confirmed that this is actually Avis' policy - to call about the vehicle change, but it just wasn't done by this location. Further, what was so amazing to me was just how rude the young lady was about this whole situation Later, I called the airport and was able to switch vehicles to a small Tucson SUV. Note that the experience with staff on the phone at the airport was positive, the exact opposite of what I had experienced from Avis local on S. Tunnel Rd. Because I live a good distance from the airport, the trip there and back robbed me of more time out of my day, but I had to do it because I am uncomfortable with driving large vehicles and didn't want to pay for more gas. Further, the airport clerk said the office could have called the airport any time earlier in the day and got an SUV from them, but they did not. When I was ready to return my vehicle, I called ahead to let them know I would need a ride home and that I was planning to get there at a specific time. The lady that answered said, with a bad attitude, "We don't have to give you a ride home if we are busy and we're going to be busy at that time." I asked if there was a better time, etc. Again, I understand that sometimes you may have to tell a client that they might have to wait for a ride home if the office is very busy at that time, but I was flabbergasted about how rude she was about it and how she didn't say I would have to wait, but that they didn't have to give me a ride home at all. When I returned the vehicle, I did have to wait before someone could drive me home, but the person at the desk told me she would call me as soon as she could take me, in case I wanted to walk around in the mall. This was really the only thing that went OK in the whole visit. She was decent to me, the vehicle check-in was smooth, etc. read more

Horrible service. After making a reservation online I arrive to find no reservation in there system. While making the reservations I called the office and spoke to a Fredrika and asked her about the details of the detail. This was untrue. I explained that I had full coverage and would be using a debit card. I asked if there were any concerns with this. She assured me there were not. I took a cab to the location only to be met with one of the rudest rental associates I have ever dealt with that was more concerned about defending her employees and calling us a liar than by helping. I wish I would have just gone with Enterprise or Hertz. They have much better service and the employees are much friendlier. I would not recommend this location to anyone. Instead check Enterprise at 828 255 0236 or Hertz at 828 225 1776. Either of those options is much better than dealing with the rude staff at this location. read more

I wish there was an option for 0 stars. And that still wouldn't reflect the absolutely terrible experience that I had with this Avis location. I typically rent vehicles from Enterprise, however, I used Avis this time in particular. I picked up at the Alcoa, TN location and needed to drop off at the Asheville location, but my agreement had been made to drop off back at the Alcoa location. Just a minor clerical issue. I actually made the agreement for a full week, just to be safe because I was in the process of vehicle shopping. I purchased a new vehicle on day 4 of having the rental car. I contacted the local Avis in Asheville to inquire about saving money by bringing it back early. They stated that I would, to just bring it in when I was ready. The next day, I brought the key back, and was treated terrible. Upon entering I stated who I was and what my objective was. One of the employees responded with, "oh yes, I spoke to you on the phone yesterday. If the tank isn't full, hurry up and go fill it up because we could really use that car right now." I was still waiting on my uber driver to take me to my newly purchased vehicle and bring me back to Avis to retrieve my personal belongings from the vehicle. When I told them I would be back in 15 minutes, they didn't even respond and just stared at me as I left. Terrible customer service just to start. When I got back, I was moving my bags from the rental to my personal vehicle, and one of the other employees came up to me and said, "let me get the mileage off of the vehicle really quick." (My hands were full and I couldn't get the keys out of my pocket). So I responded with, "okay, no problem, I will as soon as I'm done." I was stern, but not rude, in an attempt to politely let her know she's being too aggressive. She stared me down for about 20 seconds and said, "hold up, who is you, you can kiss my fat ass bitch." I assume that's how people who speak in that manner to each other communicate. I then began filming the incident. I went inside to see how much money I would be saving, to give them the keys to the vehicle and to obtain a receipt. The charges went from a one week rental for $226.24 to $601.33. They slammed the paper on the table and told me to leave immediately. When I refused, so that I could sort it out amicably with them, they called the police. I'm beyond furious. By far the worst customer service I've ever received in my entire life and the most unfair and confusing thing I've ever experienced. Do yourself a favor if you're needing a rental in the area, and don't choose Avis on Tunnel Road! read more

Showed up for 1 way rental and they did not have the car in stock and neither of the assiciates knew how to use the "new software." I waited an hour for them to get my car from the airport. When I went to check out they notified me of a $500 drop off fee for the one way rental. I needed the car because of time constraints, so I had to accept the exorbitant fee.
