2025 REVIEW: Once again, Maui Cruisers was simply the best option for car rental for our recent trip to Maui (April 5-19)!!! The most important factors were: - for convenience (you could not ask for an easier location to pick up/drop of the car).... - for price (so much more affordable than any other option...especially appreciated with our weaker Canadian dollar)... - and for AMAZING service by Josie and Paul!!! We also love supporting local and this couple is just wonderful! Yes, the Toyotas are a bit older but they run beautifully, are spacious, and the AC was perfect! Renting a car from Maui Cruisers (Paul, pictured with us on our departure day) for my first visit ever to Maui has to be one of the most unique experiences I have had! My friend and I absolutely loved Paul's personal attention, service and awesome sense of humor! I usually DREAD renting from an agency. Paul treats his customers like his family and friends: He left the car for us at the airport parking lot, although my card was declined! He just left a note to ask me to sort it out with him, which I did soon after. BEST DECISION, hands down! I only leave reviews when things are really, really bad or really, really good. And going with Paul was GREAT! I read through a lot of reviews, and the reviews for maui cruisers had the same theme and after the trip, everything I read was true! The process is SEAMLESS. I didnt have any mix ups, I didnt have to stand in a customer service line or be on hold. All i did was fill out my info on the site and got an email from Paul pretty quickly. Once I provided the info, he called me and the entire conversation was effortless and we talked like we already knew each other. Easy pick up/drop off. We had a fantastic car rental experience working with Paul. The online booking process required a call but it was pretty easy to get everything booked and arranged. Everything was pretty intuitive, from finding the car to using the car throughout the trip to drop off. The car was very reliable and at these rates, well worth the price if you're in a pinch or on a budget. One quick note is we had a scare on Haleakalā where the brake started to fail every so often. After phoning Paul and inquiring, he was informative and told us it was brake fade, attributed to the altitude and temperature we were driving at at Haleakalā. This reassured us and ensured we got back safely, which we very much appreciated. This is something to also be conscious of if you choose an older model car and reach high elevation areas, however. Overall, very easy and of course excellent rates in renting from Paul. We actually really appreciated his customer service and found him quite funny at times in discussing life experiences and life here on Maui. Would gladly come back to rent again! read more

i start my review with...what does Ohana mean to you? If Ohana is what you desire to experience the most during your vacation stay, then dealing with Josie at Maui Cruisers is priceless! Knowing that there are people here in Maui that puts your family vacation experience ahead of making a profit is appealing and gratifying. Josie was honest and forthright when it came to explaining our rental. Again I ask, what is it that you desire most from your experience. For me, knowing that Josie had our best interest in mind was more valuable than any product she could provide. I had trust in her word and that put my mind at ease. I have had numerous experiences with many rental companies in the past and none of them made me feel assured that I would be looked after. If anything, I felt like I was just a number to them. With Josie, well we feel like family! So beyond the intangibles I speak of...now my experience... we arrive after 11 hours of flying and sitting in terminals. Seemingly everyone on our flight then heads to the rental car agencies. Our van is waiting for us in the parking lot (arrive at 9:30 pm and on the road 10 minutes later). We are in the pool by 10! Pretty sure those renting from rental car businesses were there a lot longer. Sure our vehicle was older and used, but how else can you get such an amazing deal? What I can say is that the promise given is worth its weight in gold. I was told if I had any issues to contact Josie immediately and the problem would be rectified. True to form, on the 8th day of our trip on the road Hana we experienced an unforeseen mechanical event. To keep us on schedule Josie had us in a different vehicle within the hour (saving the day and putting us first). Our trip ended flawlessly from that point on, as easily as it had began...drive up to the parking lot at the airport and proceed to your terminal. Never having to wait at the national car rental chains. So why choose Maui Cruiser rentals...I can speak for my family..., we support locals instead of big chain dealers, we get better service and attention to detail. We get door to door service. We save money on our rental that can be used for other experiences during our stay (contribute to the economy). By far the most important reason is simply Ohana! We are treated and cared for like family. I can see why dealing with local rental companies may not be as appealing to everyone because you come to Hawai'i with pre determined desires and experiences and many of these smaller business do not have the inventory or capacity to help you fulfill those requests. So if you want your hair to blow in the Hawaiian sun while driving your mustang convertible or cruise the HiWay in your pimped out SUV, then deal with the big ticket rental providers and pay the premiums to do so. However, if you are just looking to assist the local business community, hoping to stretch your dollar, looking for easy accessibility, are ok with driving a used clean and maintained vehicle that has working AC, and to be treated and cared for like family...then look no further than Josie at Maui Cruiser car rentals! We walked straight outta the airport into the parking lot, care was there with hidden key, fast, fast, fast and efficient...not to mention the great price. Paul is the man! He's got a great personality and he's always reachable by phone. He is a man of his word, "my cars have some marks but they have cold AC, they run well, and they'll get you from A to B". My wife and I got an older Toyota Corolla that had its dash lights on, but he told us not to be warned ahead of time. The tires were in great shape and the temp gauge never went over half heat. In my book, that's a dependable car! we drove half of the road to Hana twice, to the airport about 5-6 times, Costco, to different beaches on the west shore.... It was fuel efficient and comfortable. Don't get me wrong, it isn't going to win any car shows lol, but it's perfect, and the money you save can be money spent on the island. Support this small business. My rating is really 6 Stars but there are only 5 here. This guy is a character and we really appreciated our experience even with a minor issue. Loved arriving at the airport and walking into the first car parking area across from the station to find our car and key and info. Our car didn't exactly look like the cars in this YELP! cover page...our Toyota Corolla was missing two rear hubcaps which I guess gives you the local look (no one should want to look like a tourist here....cops keep a special eye out for the Mustang convertibles according to a local we spoke to. No matter...we just wanted a reliable car and no hassles. The car worked fine until the driver's side door handle broke (plastic handle) in half...but was still operable. It was a couple days later that the other half broke off making it impossible to open the door on the outside of the car. We called Paul and left a message. We got a call back in the morning and he as so cool about bringing us a car out to Lahaina by noon to replace it. We will happily call on Maui Cruisers the next trip to Maui. Thanks a million Paul! :) Mahalo! p.s.- We dropped off our rental car at the airport (so easy) and caught our flight last night. Today I discovered my camera wasn't in my bag. A Nissan Sentra is a Maui Cruiser :) My wife and I travel a lot for her job on contract work. For our Maui contract we were on the island for 10 months and had to have a rental care the entire time we were there. These cars are not new and each one has it's own personality and quarks. He rents out 96-98 Nissan Sentra's for roughly $20 bucks a day (on a monthly rate). That is nearly half what the other major car rental companies are charging on the island. Renting from Maui Cruisers saved us nearly $300 a month. The first three months we were on the island we rented from Enterprise and it was a nightmare. They screwed up the billing and we always had to take time out of our schedule to swap cars each month. It was a pain in the butt. Two nice things about renting from Maui cruisers is 1.) they will drop a car off for you at the airport so it's there for you when you get off the plane. 2.) when your vacation is over you drive back to the airport and park it where you picked it up. And to address the issue of the owner. The guy is funny, not abrasive. He's an east coast transplant that decided to move to Maui after taking a vacation there some 20 years ago. But he hasn't lost any of his east coast mannerisms, slang, accent, or the crazy "I'm going to bust you up side the head Italian tone". :) If he bust your balls, bust his. He can take it. ha ha ha!!! Paul is such an amicable guy with great, reliable cars to get you around the island. I'm a big fan of not looking like an a-hole tourist and his old school Camry really did the trick. For the most part roads are paved but when you do get to those unpaved gravel roads you gotta go slow- which is totally fine in the most beautiful place in the world! Check here before Turo and any rental Agency. Paul really stepped up and provided us service not even the big car rental companies cant even match. Seriously. Showed up to the airport and got a text from Paul with pictures of the car, location, keys, full tank etc. Sweet! Turo host will charge you $100+ for this. Paul did it free of charge (we just paid for the $15 parking on exit). Went across the baggage claims and there was the car in the stated aisle. I requested 2 child seats and Paul threw those free of charge. Paul advertises "ICE COLD AC". He wasn't kidding, AC worked great! 3 days into our trip our car developed a misfire when I stepped out to get milk one night for the kids. I messaged Paul and it was already past 11 pm and we had breakfast reservations at 8am the next morning. By 6 am Paul responded, said he was on his way with a replacement car. I walked out and there's was the replacement car parked in our spot like nothing ever happened and all before 8 am. Paul definitely showed me the spirit of Aloha that alot of these big rental cars monopolys have never adopted. We traveled to Haleakalas summit and portions or Road to Hana, so no doubt his cars will get you where you need to go. They are USED and not perfect, but they are clean, and WORK. Also, Paul talked to me like I was good friend, even after I made the reservation, we still were just talking. Don't expect the Ritz Carlton treatment from Paul, he will give you the "Maui Aloha ohana local keeping it Pono" treatment which I prefer any day. From the moment I spoke with Paul on the phone a week or so before my trip to Maui, I knew I was in for an amazing experience. His unparalleled customer service, friendly nature, and desire to provide cars at reasonable prices was evident from that initial moment. As others have noted, the rental car scene on Maui suffered due to COVID - when no tourists were visiting, the large national brands were stuck with loads of inventory of vehicles that they were unable to rent - so they were sold and shipped off the island. With the return of tourism, the supply of rental cars could not nearly meet the demand for them and prices at those places skyrocketed - Maui Cruisers has kept it real and is not charging ridiculous prices. Paul simply made it happen for us on our vacation to Maui and allowed us to see all the sights Maui has to offer and we will be forever grateful! It may not be a new mustang convertible but it is a local-type car that will reliably get you around safely and reliably and help you get where you need to be to enjoy this beautiful island. Paul definitely made us feel taken care of with the car and we felt we were in great hands. The car ran absolutely great with no issues at all and had ice-cold AC. I cannot emphasize enough that Paul is an awesome, down-to-earth guy who totally "gets it" and knows how to run a business and provide for customers. I called about a month in advance to try and reserve 2 cars for a group of friends traveling together. Based on the high Yelp reviews, I was expecting stellar customer service! What I got was someone who was clearly not a local -- he sounded more like someone from New York City, with the famous matching attitude -- and who ultimately said he would "pass" on renting our group any cars! The reason? He only had older cars left in his stock and didn't want a large group of people angry at him. I suppose this makes sense and a small part of me appreciates his honesty. But the delivery was some of the most brutal "customer service" I've ever experienced. I was in so much shock at the time that I really didn't know how to react on the phone. It's only a few hours later that I realized how rude this was. I guess I'm glad he turned us away because we won't have to deal with this company longer than that short phone call! Buyer beware...
