Being an avis preferred member seems to have no benefit when it comes to the quality of vehicle you are getting. As you can see in the photos attached to this review the vehicle had never gone through any type of QC (quality control). The vehicle use to be a zip car before Avis purchased the vehicle and introduced it into their fleet of rentals. The vehicle had dents all throughout the body, check engine light, interior looks like it's never seen any type of cleaning chemical. As a preferred member with Avis I'm looking for quality and service and both of those I did not receive.

I rented a full sized car that I needed for work travel. The first car I received was a Toyota Camry with 65,000 miles. Certainly well worn but fit the bill. I got ten minutes up the road and all of the sudden the "maintenance required" light went on. So, I turned the car around and went back to Avis (frustrating). They put me in car #2, a Nissan Altima - which as soon as I started the car, the "oil change" light came on. I don't know who is checking on these cars and keeping them up and running but there is something seriously lacking in this location. This wasted almost an HOUR of my time. Then I asked for a manager and spoke with Joe who told me he would "upgrade me" (which by this time I should have been able to pick any car off the lot of my choosing, but alas that did not happen) and "upgraded me" from a Toyota Camry to a Volkswagen Passat. I am sure that you, like me, are confused as to how that is any upgrade of ANY sort to compensate me for the trouble of not one, but two unfunctional cars. Had I gotten on the road with either of these cars, I could have had a breakdown en-route to Boston and that could have been dangerous to me. I just wanted to message my frustration with the way that this was handled and I am acutely aware that I was not "upgraded." I paid for a Toyota Camry and got another full size car. Explain to me how that is any better for me. Anyhow, as an Avis Preferred member, maybe you guys can take better care of customers that you make mistakes for. Thank you.

Rented from Enterprise for a four day trip from Boston to Connecticut and New York, ending here in…read moreHartford. The experience was a good mini road trip, with no hassles or complexity from our rental. One-way car rentals are always quite a bit more expensive than a round trip, so was pleasantly surprised when finding a luxury car (Audi A4) rental from Enterprise being cheaper than an intermediate rental from competitors. It was for 4 days, with return happening at this location early morning before our flight. The Hartford airport has a modern rental car center, connected to the main terminal via an indoor land bridge. Returning was as simple as following the sign for Enterprise car return, leading us to Level 3 of the big parking garage. The attendant directed us where to park, actually scanned us in, and gave us a receipt right then and there. It was then an easy 5 minute walk to the terminal, taking a long skywalk to departures. The process maybe added 10 minutes to what it would have been if we had just been dropped off at the terminal. Addendum: There are a lot of tollways in Massachusetts, and I should have done a better job of figuring it out before we went...would have saved us time. Growing up in Illinois, I'm old enough to remember the workings of manual toll roads: planning out your route, determining how much cash you would need, and then either getting your loose change or changeable bills ready. During most times of the day, there would be lines so determining what queue was the quickest would add yet another driving decision to your trip. Then bulky transponders came out, allowing you to take the bypass (skipping all the cars in line) if you had a working one. After college, living in Wisconsin meant no tolls since the state has proudly never had them on any of their roads. Thus I didn't really keep track of tolling technology much except for the visits to Illinois for family, or the rare car rental in a toll-heavy state. My experience with rental cars and tolls is what really turned me off using a provided transponder. The concept of rental car agencies providing these were new, so wasn't much regulated then The rental car agencies used the same tact as they do for gas fill-up and collision insurance (liability insurance is already included as part of your rental): push it real hard to unsuspecting customers for convenience, but at very high (and profitable) prices. They would include a transponder in your car, and then offer unlimited tolls, for a daily charge often higher than the daily base rate of the rental itself. They would warn you if you didn't purchase it and either 1) use the transponder through a toll or 2) not pay a toll and thus have the toll agency send a bill to the rental car agency much later, they would fine you an amount much greater than what what you would have originally paid. This wasn't as big a deal when there were still manual toll booths to pay as you go...but with the disappearance of them (Massachusetts no longer has any manual booths...everything is electronic), it became a lot trickier. Thus we've chosen to just skip toll road altogether, but we found that this was a huge time suck...a lot more than anticipated. We were still able to do so on this trip, but added a lot of wasted time and stress. For our next car rental in heavy toll road areas, we will consider this (if renting from Enterprise...guessing its similar for other agencies as well...there just wasn't much documentation on-line before...it seems a lot better now): 1. Get a EZ-Pass transponder from a state that doesn't charge a rental fee (like VA or IL). Once we get the rental, tie the license plate to it, turn off the rental transponder. OR 2. Rent a transponder. Every day that it is used, there is a $3.95 fee, maximum of $19.75 per period i.e. 5 days max), plus the toll itself. OR 3. Some states (like Massachusetts) will just bill to the license plate without penalty. Enterprise will not charge a penalty, but instead just act as if you had used their rented transponder (i.e. $3.95 fee daily plus toll). #3 is the case for a lot of other states as well (CO, FL, TX, NC, GA, WA). Previously, I had conscientiously checked the state site to pay for the toll by license plate before they billed the car owner (rental agency) triggering that massive fine. Good to know that rental agencies have gotten rid of that tactic, either because it was better for the consumer or more likely because they were forced to by the individual states.

I drove the car within CT to attend the family weekend at the Hotchkiss School. On October 18th, I received a receipt and a notification from my credit card that I was charged $150.9 for toll charges. I was very confused because I've been to Hotchkiss School many times and there are no tolls on the way from the airport. The person at the desk also confirmed when I was taking the car on Oct. 9th. And what toll charges add up to $150 in two days?! So I opened the receipt only to find that the tolls were all the way in Ohio. If any human being was even checking the record, they would see that I picked up and returned the car at the Hartford airport, and the mileage they recorded would not indicate that I drove all the way to Ohio from Connecticut, and back. But they didn't check. They didn't call me. They just charged my credit card.

I immediately contacted the rental office, and an employee went to retrieve it. Instead of returning with my wallet, I was told that it had been left inside another vehicle that had already been rented to a customer. After returning to my hotel, I contacted the police for assistance. Shortly after the police became involved, I received a call stating that my wallet had been located at the rental office. While I was relieved to get my wallet back, the conflicting explanations and sudden recovery left me questioning how the situation was handled. I believe there should be clearer procedures in place for securing and returning customers' lost property to prevent situations like this from occurring.

In June, for the first time, we used Advantage EZ Rent A Car at The Denver International airport. Note* We know that some companies train their employees to try to get extra sales from each customer transaction, so we are careful with what agents say and the offers and fine print that they provide. LORENZO, our agent, convinced us to take an upgrade which worked out fine. But he also pressured us into taking the E-Z Toll Pass with the rental ($9.99 USD/day x 9 days=$89.91 USD). We declined but he persisted that it would be very difficult to avoid the tolls which have very expensive penalties if you go through even once. He specifically said that besides the toll charge each time you go through there is a $25 penalty if you don't have the E-Z Toll Pass. Which, FYI, I just went onto the Colorado E 470 Toll Website to see if that was accurate, and it is not. It is a $5 late fee, not $25. The $25 is if you don't pay after several notices and months of tardiness. So that was lie #1. LORENZO said that "if you don't go through any tolls, the amount will be refunded." Based on that condition, we accepted and agreed on the rental. WE WENT THROUGH NO TOLLS; WE AVOIDED ALL TOLLS DURING THE TRIP. Upon returning, we awaited our rental invoice watching to see if that E-Z Toll charge would still be on the bill. Sure enough it was! Which we had a feeling it would be. So we phoned the 1-800 number on the invoice and spoke to a representative to file a complaint and ask for the refund. After explaining the situation, the agent was not able to authorize a refund. So I asked to speak to a supervisor or manager to resolve the issue. He escalated the complaint to a Denver manager (Natalie) to make a decision. He gave me a complaint number, and said the Denver manager would phone us back outside of 48 hours. We left us at that on Thursday evening. As of Monday evening, we had not yet received a call back (surprise surprise), so I called the 1-800 number again. The new agent informed me the Denver manager had made a decision on the complaint not to honour the refund. He didn't have a reason to the decision or why they hadn't returned the call. So, I explained the details again to him. He didn't seem to care. I asked him if he thought it was okay for Advantage employees to lie to their customers? He was quiet and didn't know what to say. I asked to speak to his supervisor. It took over 30 minutes, and the agent kept coming on saying she was busy but could I hold. Eventually, he even said the supervisor authorized a 20% refund. I said it was 100%, or I wasn't getting off the phone. I was transferred to a Sara G. (she wouldn't give us her last name), but her employee number is #30661. She was the top supervisor. But who knows if anything they told us is true. She was very hard to understand, the sound was quiet and muffled. She quickly went into a long 'fine print' rant saying the contract was already closed, and the Denver Manager had made the decision not to give a refund, and that she could only offer us a 50% refund on the charge. I declined. I again asked her if it was okay that the Denver agent Lorenzo straight up lied to us? She didn't address my question... We didn't use one toll, and in fact it was really easy to travel around Colorado and the Southwest without going through any tolls. This is a really short version of everything that was said, but in short an employee lied to us, the company didn't honour their commitment, and don't care that they are scamming customers. In the end, she gave us an ultimatum: take the 50% refund, or the call would be disconnected. How is that for customer service? We took the refund, but we will absolutely, 100%, NEVER USE Advantage Rental Car Ever Again. Customer retention is important in business, android word of mouth. No matter how big the company is.
