I had a very concerning experience when returning my rental vehicle. After returning the car, I realized I had accidentally left my wallet in the glove compartment. I immediately contacted the rental office, and an employee went to retrieve it. Instead of returning with my wallet, I was told that it had been left inside another vehicle that had already been rented to a customer. I was then informed that the customer would check for the wallet the following morning. Given the circumstances, I was extremely concerned because my wallet contained important personal items. After returning to my hotel, I contacted the police for assistance. Shortly after the police became involved, I received a call stating that my wallet had been located at the rental office. While I was relieved to get my wallet back, the conflicting explanations and sudden recovery left me questioning how the situation was handled. I believe there should be clearer procedures in place for securing and returning customers' lost property to prevent situations like this from occurring. read more

The walk from the Terminal to the Rental Car Center kind of sucked, but that's not really National's fault. It was super easy to get in a car and go. They didn't have a wide variety of cars, but they did have some Suburbans and such from which to choose. I was going to be hauling a few people around so I was "lucky" to snag a Chrysler Mini-Van. Pickup and drop-off were both pretty easy at the smaller BDL airport, and the staff was nice enough to not be memorable either way. This was an interesting drop off... I got there around 4:15AM and I didn't think they were open. It was all dark, but the car in front of me, also dropping off, was being moved by someone in a hi-res vest. Soon after I pulled up and unloaded and then went to the drop box to leave my key, that guy drove back in another car, being driven by someone else, got out and asked me for my key. I assumed he worked there, but after I gave him the key, he drove up the ramp and never scanned the car in. Only reason this seemed OK was that we were on the other side of the secure area, where if they tried to leave, they would pop the tires. Several hours later I noticed I didn't get my receipt, like I usually do within minutes of dropping off and when I checked the app, it said my car was overdue. So, I called the 1-800 number and explained to a lady what happened. She said she'd forward my concerns on to a district manager. About an hour later I got the receipt. So, I assume they did have the car and forgot to check it in. Very odd practices at this location. Definitely doesn't make me feel like a valued customer. Really bad customer service, the woman at the couter made n9 effort to help me telling me it is spring break and that the lot was empty, but even with a reservation they wouldnt honor it. At the counter there was no signs saying no cars available and they kept servucing other clie nts, she offered me pickup trucks when all I needed was a regular sedan. But really she made me feel like it was my fault. Bad service!!!! read more

I would like to commend the great staff at National Car Rental at the BDL airport. They were very attentive and helped me return the car and get into a new one just because I wanted wireless CarPlay. Rented a Premium Suv in April through Priceline. When we get there they dont have the size I rented so I get downgraded. Get a Ford Expedition and only drive it 242 miles before I start having engine problems. Call the roadside Number to let them know that we were having engine troubles with the vehicle. ( car shaking, rough idle, strong gas smell, thick white smoke from the exhaust, check engine light, and didnt want to start). The car was not safe to drive from NY to CT. They get me a tow to replace the vehicle the next morning. Get a Jeep Wagoneer and return it in CT back to Bradley. Talk to a manager and he refunds me the amount we paid for insurance because he felt bad. At that point I thought that was the end of this rental. Fastforward a couple of weeks and I get a notification from my credit card that they are charging me over 300 for the roadside to replace the car that failed because of the engine which is a mechanical failure and should be on them. There is no one to get intouch to dispute the charge and just get told a supervisor will call you back. That never happens. Now its july and they are putting me in collections because they wont honor their cars reliability. At least I finally have a number to call but putting me on the DNR list because your car broke down because of engine issues and charging me isnt right. Edit: to Kim from National. I have already tried that multiple times and they told me they would need a supervisor to get back in contact with me. I have not recieved phone calls back and this is from calling National, chatting with national, facebook messanger, twitter and the contact us form. I have all the receipts showing I should get a call from someone but still havent. And now Im getting an email about going on a DNR list. This has been ridiculous all because they dont honor their vehicles and pass on the charge to their customer because they dont want to pay for a vehicle that had engine issues. That isnt my fault the car developed engine issues. I only drove it 242 miles. Thats either poor mateniance or something was wrong with the car before going out and I just so happened to be the lucky customer it happened to. Just got off the phone with the number provided 18007747578 and it looks like National is trying to push their problem onto me saying the car was fine. If the car was fine I would of drove it home and not called roadside. The SUV WAS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE!!!! even the tow driver was like it looks like a blown headgasket. But to National a malfunctioning engine is perfectly fine. National is a shady company and I would recommend staying far away from them seeing as they dont stand behind their cars. read more

I've been traveling through BDL for about 15 years and have exclusively rented from National Car Rental (this equates to hundreds of rental days) This recently opened location replaces the remote site a few miles down the road, so I guess the value of repurposing the property at the former location justified building a new rental complex on the airport property. No more walking a few feet to the curb outside baggage claim and waiting on a shuttle bus then taking the pothole ridden bouncing ride to the offsite location, I took this ride so often I developed a wonderful rapport with the drivers who never seemed to change over all these years I am especially fond of "Olsen" the most friendly person you'll ever want to meet, the remote lot was filled with cars and within a minute or two I was on my way driving the car I picked and I skipped the counter using the Emerald Club Perks, I will sort of miss that. Fast forward to today - I walked and walked and walked to the new multimillion dollar onsite rental car facility, I admit this place is beautiful, shiny polished floors, giant picture window lined walkways they definitely spared no expense, but I'm not so sure it's an upgrade for the customer considering the selection of cars has dwindled to an all time low - I reserved the rental a few weeks in advance only to arrive and find only a few cars available - (3) electric vehicles (no they weren't Teslas) (1) minivan and (1) BMW X3 SUV which was locked up tight and the attendance told me there would be a additional $20 per day charge since it was a premium car - after tactfully explaining to him I wasn't taking the minivan or one of the electric cars nor would I be paying an up-charge for the Beamer he gladly provided the exceptional customer service I've come to expect from National Car Rental and fetched the keys and I was on my way without an additional fee. I do like that it's all indoors now since the walkways are completed so it's will be nice and toasty in the winter and air conditioned in the summer and no more tromping through the snow and battling the blustery wind. I've been with these guys since the 1980's so I'll adapt and continue to be a loyal customer... read more

The rental counter here is accessible by a covered walkway from the airport. This was one of those cases where several companies were housed nearby, and while no one was staffing the National counter, someone who was ostensibly staffing for another company was able to get me my rental car with reasonable speed. It is in a garage with easy access to roads outside the airport; there was not a ton of obstacles as there are in some bigger airports. My car didn't have all the features I'm used to but was functional and I did not have any issues. Returning the car was likewise straightforward and I was able to drive straight in and leave the car and keys with minimal hassle, only to receive a receipt by email. I did not have any trouble making my flight, but certainly the efficiency can matter if you're pressed for time. I did not have any greater needs than that. read more

This is very new in 2022. The biggest problem is it is a long walk from the terminal and it is NOT covered. The rental car companies are separated by different floors. We had Hertz/Budget/Thrifty on the 4 floor. New so very clean and industrial looking. read more

Picking up the car we were not impressed due to walking over two blocks, then have to take a elevator up to the car rental office with our luggage in hand, especially being two eighty year olds! Now returning the car was very easy. Directions to the place to return the car was very good directions and easy to do. When we arrived at the office, I told them we needed a ride back to the airport and they said no problem!! Took us right to the door, unload our luggage right in front of the check-in and we were on our way. A real improvement would be getting from the airport to pick up the car. read more

National Car Rental is my preferred rental car company. I'm sure other companies are quite good as well, but I have almost always been treated very well when I rent from National. Because of that, when I needed a rental car at the Bradley International Airport near Hartford, Connecticut, I chose to book it with National. This location offers their Emerald Aisle service where you can get off the airport shuttle bus before it goes to the main counter and then just walk along the parked vehicles until you find what you want. Then you get in and drive to the checkout booth located at the exit from the lot, all within a matter of minutes. Yes, other rental car companies offer similar programs and many people are happy with them. But my personal preference happens to be with National Car Rental. read more

Many issues. Rented the SUV, got on the highway, 4 check engine alerts appear including tire issues, filter issue, and other unknown issues. A day later, bad smells come from the engine. I email National help and support and no response. Drop off a day later anyway. It never broke down on us, but seems like someone should be checking for issues and fixing them prior to renting out an SUV in this condition. When I return the SUV, I hand "Freddie" the keys and go to get my bags from the trunk. Return guy "Freddie" presses the automatic trunk button and closes the trunk door right when I'm turning the corner to get my luggage and it hits me in the face and knocks my glasses off. He comes around the back of the SUV, tells me he didn't push any button, laughs as I'm searing in pain, offers me a bottle of water, and tells me "he hopes I feel better." I walk to find the shuttle to the airport. Coordinator tells me to stand right in front of the building. Wait 5 minutes, the shuttle arrives. Shuttle driver tells me to walk to the other bus at the other building. I walk to the other building and ask the shuttle driver, "hey, you're going to the airport, right?" He shakes his head sideways in "no" or disbelief. He doesn't say anything. I say, "Did you shake your head because you think it's ridiculous I'm asking you if we're going to the airport or because you aren't going to the airport?" He then raises his hand in disbelief at the other customer, like I'm an idiot, and 'welcomes' me on board. I tell the customer standing by about the "great service I've experienced at National today..." All of this should have been easy and it was painful, annoying, and demeaning at best. $500 SUV rental would be the same at any rental business. Why would I choose National again? read more

I was really worried that they would be closed when I got there, because the DEN flight is delayed over half the time. Arrived at the counter at 12:35. The staff were so nice, and said don't worry in the future- they always wait for the last flight; sometimes until 3am! The car was average- definitely had a smoker in it recently, but since I wasn't stuck in the airport overnight I just dealt with it. read more

The National lot is a few minutes drive on the shuttle and you'll be dropped at the Emerald aisle. There's always been a variety of cars to choose from. Pick the car, head to the gate. Morris the shuttle operator is an asset as a driver and as a human being. I was in a huge rush after having problems with work-related tasks and needs to make it to the terminal ASAP. He gladly loaded some business materials into the shuttle bus straight from the rental car as I finished up my return. He made it a priority to get me to the terminal as fast as possible. For a change - at this airport I was picked up very quickly by the rental car shuttle and taken quickly to the National rental location. The selection of cars was limited - though there were plenty to pick from - the actual selection of various models was about non-existent and rather disappointing. My car itself was clean and though it was almost full of gas it was NOT - I hate that! It was just under the full mark, which meant I get ripped off. Could I have mentioned it - yep - would they have done something - perhaps, but the problem is - I shouldn't have to worry about such things! Though the car was clean and ran nicely! The location was easy to get out of and I will bet as easy to get back to, but filling up might not be so easy! read more

I'm really disappointed in the service I received from National. I just had a simple question about the gas stations in the area. I chose the option to fill up the tank on the way to the gas station and I just had a simple question about if the gas stations are open 24 hours in the area. I had a very early flight and wanted to take care of the gas before I got to the airport. I was not told that National does not answer their own phone. They have a third-party that is out of the country and I could not get to the front desk. The operators that answer the phone do not know the area because they are not in Connecticut so I asked them if they can get a hold of someone at the front desk. I was on hold for 20 minutes! Finally the front desk person answered and he basically told me that he doesn't know anything about the area and then told me that there was a customer in front of him and put me on hold again! I got back to the customer service line and asked for a supervisor and told them that I feel because of the inconvenience that I went through, I should get the remaining gas filled for free. I notified them that it was only about a quarter of a tank. When I spoke to the "supervisor" and she (her name was Janaya) told me that gas was only $3.73 a gallon. I asked her if she felt that I should pay that. She then said that she was only a secretary and could not give any type of opinion. Then why did she open her mouth and tell me she was a supervisor and then say that it was only $3.73 gallon. I was offended and took that as that she was saying I was cheap. I am not being cheap, I just have a very early flight Friday and I only have about five hours sleep and if I knew that the gas stations were not open then I would've filled it by my hotel. She straight out lied to a paying customer then offended me with her rude comment. They wasted about 45 minutes of my life with all the holding and all of the bad customer service and then told me that all they could do is give me a reference number and that someone in an "escalated position" would give me a call. I don't believe that for second. After all she lied about being a supervisor, so she's probably lying about someone calling me.. I will tell you though, I work for a company that has an account with National and I'm going to notify them about this bad customer service. I am also going to request that I use another service for rental cars from now on because this was the worst customer service I have ever seen from a rental car company. They are very disappointing and condescending and I will never using National car rental again! Very unprofessional and lousy customer service. read more

On December 8, 2016 I had one of the best customer service experiences of my life at the National Car Rental location at Windsor Locks/Bradley Airport. I returned my car late in the day, in a hurry to catch my flight home. While being checked in by 'Sam', I realized that I had lost my wallet. Needing to re-trace my path in a hurry, Sam offered to drive me back to the gas station I stopped at and look for my wallet; we were unsuccessful. By the time we returned to the rental lot and re-checked the rental car and my bags, the local police dept. called to tell me that a good Samaritan had just turned my wallet in, intact. The police station was 10 minutes away. I quickly sought Sam out again and asked if he would be willing to drive me to the police station to retrieve my wallet. He was in the process of clocking out of his work shift, so he hurried to clock out and then drove me in his personal vehicle on his own time to the police station; we retrieved my wallet and he then drove me directly to the airport to catch my flight. With time running out, I checked in to find out that my flight had been delayed 15 minutes and I was able to board and return home on time. Without Sam's selfless commitment to customer service, I would have been in a very unpleasant and inconvenient situation trying to retrieve my wallet (with no license, no money, and no credit cards on my person). Sam went way out of his way to make my problem his problem and he dedicated himself to solving it. He put himself in my shoes. I cannot imagine a better example of customer service that goes "above and beyond". I have always had a good experience renting from this National location, but my experience with Sam on 12/8/16 has truly made this location one of my best customer service experiences ever. James and Brendan - you deserve credit as well for encouraging your employees to serve your customers in exemplary fashion. Well done! Thank you Sam!!! I had reserved a compact car on-line at a rock-bottom coupon price. Shuttle was instantly available curbside at BDL airport and dropped me within minutes at the rental lot. I checked in at the counter where several staff were available. Friendly greetings and directions to my car. No paper work necessary if one is an Emerald Member. Manager Karen invited me to select a 4-wheel drive vehicle without up-charge since snow was in the forecast and for me to have a safe drive. I have used other rental car places through out my travels but not longer. I will only use National. After being on a business trip for 20 days and returning the car. I left a company card in the rental vehicle. Called them from the airport and not only did Reana find the card but she also found a way to get it to the airport. I work in the customer service industry and this is how a business should run. National has a special person. In Reana!
