I am a senior citizens 66 years old and moved to Connecticut on July 1 from an area that had a very high walkable score and I had not owned a car for the last 10 years. I rented a long-term rental from budget on Tuesday, July 8. It was a Toyota Camry hybrid. I went for a hike at a reservoir in Hartford that evening and when I returned to the car, the front tire was flat. I attempted to reach out to roadside assistance and due to the area that I was in, I was unable to text them, which seems to be the only way to get a hold of them. I called the customer service number and explain the situation to the person who I got on the phone and explained I was new to the area. I knew no one, I had about 20% left on the battery on my cell phone And that would he please stay on the line with me when he transferred me over to roadside assistance, which he did, he was very accommodating. When I got to speak to roadside assistance. The roadside assistance person kept asking me questions and repeating the same questions over again finally, she admitted that their system was down and now I needed to call back in two hours. I explained the situation and said would you please take down my location my name my telephone number and when your system comes back up please reach out to roadside assistance and send someone to change the tire. She said there was nothing she could do to help me and she hung up on me. I was able to find a roadside assistance that did not need texting and I called them and they came out to change the tire within 45 minutes. I had to pay $199 for that service. The next morning I called budget to let them know what it happened the previous night and told them what the tire technician told me he said that both the front tires were bald and it looks like they were never rotated in 33,000 miles and that the car was unsafe to drive and that I should take it and get another car. I felt unsafe returning it to the airport because it was further away and went to a location closer where I did not have to go over 40 miles an hour. I received a replacement car and was told to fill out an accident /incident report there was no accident. It was an incident was that the car was rented with two bald tires and that the car was unsafe. The person I had spoke with on the phone that morning had said they were going to credit me for the roadside assistance amount and as of today, when I'm writing, this, I still have not received the credit. Due to it being a long-term rental until I decide which car I want to purchase budget happened to be the most affordable for a month-long rental, but I did review the car that I received as a replacement, checking the tires and the entire car to ensure that I was getting a safer car My warning to everyone is to make sure that you look at everything when you rent a car, including the tires. In addition, do not pay for the roadside assistance because the service is unacceptable and even if I paid for that service that person would've still hung up on me because their system was down. read more

DISHONEST EMPLOYEES and CORRUPT LOCATION. I filled the gas tank to FULL just before pulling into the airport to turn in the vehicle. Get my bill and saw I was charged $170 for 17 gallons of fuel at $9.79 per gallon. Outrageous. And this was after the $200 one way fee from an hour away. Immediately called and of course you don't talk to the actual rental desk at the airport to correct the error. Now having to submit proof that I filled the gas tank. I've rented from Budget for years and typically rent 29 times per year. I've always returned the vehicle on full. This location has dishonest employees who probably are filling up their own cars and charging customers because you cannot fill a gas tank that is already full. Giving one star because I have to. Rental was fine, service was fine, but they don't clean the inside of the windows, so they were foggy from the inside. Very hard to see out back and front windows. I can't believe they can't just wipe it down. I hope this reminds you to have them clean the windows before you take off. read more

We came to CT/MA/RI to visit family after being away for 3 years. They had moved the car rental places "closer" to the airport... yea they're closer, but the walk there, especially with a bunch of luggage, does not feel close at all. You leave the baggage claim, go outside, and walk across aways to another building. We waited AN HOUR in line when there really weren't that many people there, and all were going to different companies (I believe there were 3 different ones including Budget on that floor). Christ in a basket, why the F did this take so long?! I will never understand what on earth takes so long at these car rental places. This was the worst yet by far. The prices are too high in general but the GAS rules nowadays, wow. You have to fill up at one of the most expensive stations right outside the airport, or pay $10/gal for however much they have to fill? Calm the F down, Budget. That is just ridiculous. When we finally finished the unnecessarily lengthy transaction, we were told what car we had. Why did that happen just then? What happened to picking out your car ahead of time or them choosing it based on your type option and them having it ready to go when you're due to arrive? Everything took for f-ing ever! We waited MORE in the parking garage. Again, why was this car not ready and right there? Finally we watch one of the techs park what we think is ours (and it was) in a random space off in the distance and just walk away. He had forgotten to radio the other tech we had been initially speaking with when we got to the garage. Why wouldn't he have brought it to the door?! We had to tell him that our car was in fact ready as we just saw it and could he f-ing check. Yep, it was our car and honestly I was surprised this dude even picked up a bag with how sloppy he was. He attempted helping... we had 3 large suitcases and he started putting them in, the incorrect way... the only incorrect way. They would have fit standing up, they would have fit side by side laying down, but he put 2 in the wide way so that was all that fit. Boy I did not miss these people with half a brain cell. We fixed them ourselves down the road after leaving. He also didn't scan the car with us like is normal, to make note of any previous damage/dings so it wouldn't be listed as our fault when we returned the car. Thankfully there was no issue with that but it was still all a WTF ordeal. We'll never be back. read more

Not great experience at Budget. I had asked how much it was to upgrade the vehicle. Christine never gave me the price and automatically added it to my rental and when I said I didn't want that vehicle for that price, she kept pushing and pushing and refused to change the price of the car rental back to the original request. She offered "discounts" to make the overly priced car "more affordable" but honestly she was shady and was not listening to what the client wanted. The car rental line was also extremely long and took forever to get a rental. I wish I had read the reviews before renting from here. The amount of money I saved was not worth the aggravation. I reserved online directly though their website and pre-paid. When I got to the location at Bradley International airport there was a woman rudely telling customers where to stand to wait and actually had some customers walk to a separate building to do the paperwork for the rentals. The agent I was directed to mentioned she was off in 15 minutes. We went through the paperwork and she attempted to upsell me numerous times. I didn't want additional insurance as my insurance covers rental cars, the agent demanded to know who my insurance carrier was. Other attempts at upsell were to pre-pay for gas (about $10 a gallon), no thank you, to pay for gas at the time of return and for a toll transponder. Additionally she wanted to know if I would be going out of state with the car. I was not given a choice of vehicle, just told to go to a space number and that was the car. I asked for directions twice and was told to just "go straight back". Took me a bit but I finally found it. Now, the car....fairly new, but black on black. It was hot! The GPS and Bluetooth didn't work and I was unable to hook up to the car for directions. The radio was stuck on Sirius and it took a good 15 minutes to get that turned off. Unfortunately it turned back on each time I started the car, even if the radio was off it went back on. The child safety locks and window locks engaged every single time I drove even though I disengaged them each time. Finally, the gas gauge was stuck on full. It didn't move until I had driven about 200 miles. Overall bad experience. Never again Budget. read more

This was, hands down, my worst experience renting a car. I cannot recommend this place to anyone. While trying to pick up my car, the woman behind the desk was less than helpful and obviously in a hurry to end her shift. I was asking specific questions about the cars features, and was ready to upgrade if needed. She brushed me off entirely. So I got a car that really didn't work for me. Secondly, the car needed it's oil changed (the alert kept going off) and the cruise control wasn't working properly (which was a feature I had specifically inquired about because I was going to be traveling a long distance). Thirdly, I got stuck in traffic on my way to drop the car off. I tried calling all the numbers I had access to, and kept getting routed to their call center. The call center kept giving me new numbers that would wind up routing back to them. This made me an extra hour late because I had to keep pulling over to write down new numbers, dial, talk to them on the phone, etc. In the end, I was 2 hours late to drop off the car and they charged me an extra $50 for it! The entire daily rate for the car was only around $30! And I would have only been an hour late had their phone systems been setup correctly, and their staff at all knowledgeable. This experience put a huge damper on my trip. I will never rent from Budget again and I suggest you pay a tad more to rent elsewhere,too. read more

I travel a lot, and this was one of the better rental car experiences I've had in recent memory. MDL is a medium sized airport and the rental car companies are not actually in the terminal. Even so, I stepped out of the baggage claim area onto the curb and there was a Budget rental car shuttle sitting right outside the door. I stepped on board and we were on our way almost immediately. The shuttle driver was very friendly and appeared genuinely eager to please. He found out my name, radioed ahead, and found out which spot my rental car was in. It wasn't a long ride. I think within about 5 minutes I was stepping off the shuttle and immediately into my rental car. There was no wait at the exit from the parking lot and I was on the road right away. Even though I'm forced to use the lowest bidder rental car company for my business travel, I was very pleased with the car I got here. It had bluetooth so I could connect my phone and talk hands-free while I drove. It had cruise control so my leg didn't get tired on the 1-hour drive to my destination. It had a backup camera so I didn't have to retrain myself to twist around and look out the back window like I often have to do with other rental cars. Check-in was quick and easy. No wait. I parked, the attendant scanned the bar code, checked the mileage and gas, printed my receipt, and I was on my way. A shuttle bus was waiting. I got on and was at the airport about 5 minutes later. After a long day of flight delays due to bad weather up the Eastern seaboard, my plane finally landed at Bradley-Hartford Airport and I made my way out to the curb to wait for the Budget Car Rental shuttle bus. I called the Budget counter when I landed to be sure they were still open, and they had a shuttle bus waiting for me as I exited the terminal. There was only one person in line ahead of me at the off-site facility, and come to discover that Budget had pulled up my reservation and automatically given me a free upgrade on the car before the shuttle bus arrived. I was expecting the typical Ford Focus or Chevy Impala, but they gave me the peppy little R/T Dodge Avenger. This spunky little car had lots of pick-up out on the open highway, and it probably should have come with a few pre-printed speeding tickets just to be safe. There are several things that Budget has done to disappoint and lose a customer. 1. I'm upset that pressure tactics were used to scare me into buying a $34.99 per day (I was told it would be $30 per day) "extra insurance" not covered by my own insurance company. This would be in case the car was damaged, then I would be responsible for any revenue loss that Budget would incur due to not being able to rent out the vehicle while it was being repaired if I chose not to buy this. This, I believe is unethical and something Budget is using to scare customers who are confident that their own car insurance will cover them if an accident should arise, into buying this very expensive and unnecessary "extra". 2. In addition to this, I had extended my trip by 5 days and Budget refused to allow me to use my AARP card to receive the discount. They said it was the policy of Budget that I could not do this at the counter but I would need to make a phone call to Budget and say that I was making a separate 5 day trip rather than extending my trip. This isn't what I was doing and I was unable to jump through their deceitful hoop since I was beginning my vacation at the time. 3. When I arrived home, I found that the gas PrePay I opted for, so that I could return the car with the tank empty, "at the going rate of the cost of gas per gallon" which was $4.89 per gallon ... well, my receipt shows that Budget took the liberty of charging me $9.79 per gallon. These things are very deceitful and there is no way I could trust this company or recommend Budget to anyone from this point forward. I paid hundreds of dollars extra because of the pressure tactics I fell for. This company is not helping or looking out for their customers, only their bottom line. read more

Unaware that Budget has recently relocated in Bradley airport (Windsor Locks, CT) and no longer down the road at the address on the rental agreement, I used the airport rental car phone to call Budget for a shuttle, and no one answered the phone. I inquired at the airport information desk and was told to walk along the sidewalk half a mile to the new garage. I stood ONE HOUR and FIFTEEN MINUTES in line at the Budget rental line with 12 customers ahead of me and one desk clerk who waited on the same customer for 45 minutes. The adjacent Avis counter had 3 clerks efficiently processing their customers with no waiting. After 35 minutes, a second Budget clerk appeared and slowly processed customer rentals. When a Budget Fastbreak Express customer arrived, the desk clerk would immediately leave the customer she was waiting on and process the Express customer for 5 to 10 minutes. This practice is extremely rude and poor customer service. Now down to 10 customers ahead of me, Avis agents began assisting Budget customers. My turn came and an Avis agent called me over. I received my rental agreement and was told to pick up a Dodge Charger (which I requested a different vehicle and was told that was the only full size car available) in spot K-13 in the garage. There was no vehicle in spot K-13, and no Dodge Charger in the vicinity. The garage attendants were extremely friendly and helpful, and promptly assigned me a Chevy Malibu. Do you recall that I mentioned the desk clerk stating there were no other full size vehicles?? Guess what, there were several in the garage. So the helpful and efficient garage attendants and the gate attendants had me behind the wheel and out within 5 minutes. Upon returning the vehicle, the garage attendants were friendly and efficient, and also informed me of a bridge to the terminal on the 3rd floor so I wouldn't have to make the 1/2 mile walk where I was initially directed. The helpful, efficient, and friendly garage staff are the only reason Budget has earned more than a zero rating from me, but I will never in my life rent from Budget or recommend Budget to anyone. I usually like Budget for it prices and service. Unfortunately, not at this location. I know how the system works, but reservations should mean something. Otherwise, why bother? Long story short, by the time I arrived, they didn't have the car I requested. Not the end of the world. They had to put me in a minivan, which would have been ok if it didn't stink of smoke, have sticky stains all over, filthy windows, and body damage. Then to top it off, the check engine light came on. I called them the next day to explain what a crap car they put me in and was offered a $25 credit! Talk about a slap in the face! I rented from budget as I always do when I come back to my hometown for a visit which is several times a year. They are usually professional courteous and kind. This time however I waited outside of the airport for nearly an hour for a shuttle bus. A competitor found pity on me and drove me as close as he could get so I could walk the rest of the way through the snow to get to the budget counter. There I found the staff to be unprofessional and uncaring. Two young girls behind the counter on their phones giggling to whatever entertainment they were into.Never again will I rent from this joke of a rental car company. DO NOT RENT WITH BUDGET! No matter the deal they offer you, they cannot be trusted. We rented through our Union so that we could afford to fly to Hartford for my little sister's wedding. We combined our flight and car to get the best price. Our car rental was supposed to be $10/day, for booking together, and that's really a deal that can't be beat. However.... Budget didn't keep up their end of the deal. When we got there, we saw that the "Standard" car that they were offering was too small for our family. We asked if we upgraded to the next size up if we'd be voiding our deal, and the woman behind the counter assured us we would be fine. We'd be paying an additional $10/day, which would bring our total up to $20/day, which was manageable, plus taxes and fees if we brought the car back damaged or empty (we did neither.) We dropped the car off on Sunday, and flew home. Today, the following Tuesday, my credit card alerted me that a large purchase had been made. Budget had charged us not $60 for the trip (which perhaps some surchages and taxes) but $327!!!!!! I immediately jumped on the phone to call the Budget location in question. The young man on the phone told us we'd signed a contract to pay for the larger car, and this had voided our previous confirmation. I explained to him that the woman at his desk had told me differently, and that I would be fine with paying a larger amount, but just couldn't afford such a big leap in prices. He said "M'am, travel is confusing, you signed a contract, I can't take the charge off. Is there anything else I can help you with?" Seriously?! Travel is confusing?! You have to take a bus from the airport to get here. The place is behind a fence and once you choose budget you can't get to another rental company. For some reason their staff will not look at you even when talking, instead they stare at the computer screen throughout the transaction and act like the customer owes them something. Surreal experience with something I pay money for. Their online prices, even when combined with your flight, are a scam. But that's another topic for budget as a whole. This particular location should be staffed by machines. Everyone would have a better experience. Zero social skills, not to mention customer service or problem solving. After years of renting from Enterprise, the Budget experience was disappointing and hostile. (Enterprise closes at midnight and we flew in late, otherwise I wouldn't have considered it.) And maybe this is what renting cars is normally like, but that's why I've used Enterprise exclusively for 20 years. Budget is actually more expensive, too. The night staff were really nice. I think these are Budget's problems, not this location's. The guy says "Check the car for any dings so you don't get charged for damage." This is after midnight. The parking lot does not have good lighting. I happened to have a flashlight, but if I didn't, I would have missed a bunch of stuff (there were a *lot* of dings and scratches) and maybe been charged for it? See below about the return experience. The security guard at the entrance is who we tell about any damage to the car. There's one guy, and one exit, and it was enough hassle with just us. What happens if there's more than one customer? There was a broken interior vent--the airflow didn't turn side to side, and there was actually a broken vane hanging out of the vent. Pretty sure Enterprise wouldn't have rented out a car in this condition: if they didn't have the right size car, they would have upgraded me (which they usually do anyway). By contrast, Enterprise sends a person around the car with you, so you identify the damage together: instead of "damage is your responsibility," the relationship is "we don't want you to have to pay for damage you didn't cause." "Fill up the tank, and bring us the receipt so we know you filled it up within 3 miles of the office--some people will fill it up farther away, but the gas gauge still shows as full." The best part is that when we returned the car, no one checked it for damage, nor did they ask for a receipt. To recap: - Nickel-and-diming on gas (while treating me as a likely criminal). - Car in middling condition over all, and filthy on the outside. (It was clean inside, at least.) - General attitude that the customer is a threat, rather than someone paying them for a service. Oh, and the final bill included an extra day's worth of extra fees (which were somehow not calculated when I had pre-paid over the website), plus taxes charged on the fees. Really good experience. I had paid for second-cheapest car, but when he found out that I would be driving around my 80-year-old dad, Steve upgraded me to a Nissan Altima. The Altima was much easier for Dad to get in and out of than the sub-compact would have been (he has had two hip replacements and can't bend over as well as he used to). I travelled across the country to watch my daughter receive an award, only to be told that Budget does not accept debit cards at time if rental. They reserved me, and immediately debited the funds. Now I am stranded here in Bradley, with no wheels,after being given the bums rush at the counter. I am one of the people that did not survive the recession with intact credit, and I no longer have an official credit card. I have a perfect driving record, a job, and cash. None of these are good enough for budget. There's a sign in the lobby that says they take debit cards. Their website says they do. Here I stand. Lied to, cheated out of $150.00. Not happy. Beware. The lady at register said I needed a new card on file as my debit card had expired. I asked what for as I had already paid the duration of the reservation in full. She said they needed a card on file to submit the return. I clarified again I would not be charged anything and she said "no I do not see a balance on your account". She proceeded to swipe my car and hand me a receipt for $631. She could tell I knew she had just lied to me and she immediately called for the manager's assistance. He apologized for the error and blamed it on the original locations error when placing my reservation in the system. I called the main customer service line today and they will be refunding me but my credit card is over the limit with this charge and I am out $630 for 3-5 business days. I very much understand the issues the pandemic is causing with staffing and vehicle shoratges as I rent vehicles on a monthly basis. The counter person at Merillville today told me they did not have any compact cars and I would have to get a full size since my rental was ONE WAY. I looked on my phone to verifiy and sure enough I did not have a ONE WAY rental. I told her this and she said corporate can show one thing when their computers show another...REALLY? Then she told me I'd have to pay the higher rate. I said normally when this happens I get the same rate as it's not my fault you are out of cars. Giving me a gas guzzler for a week is double penalizing ME. She got upset. I told her I understood she was just the counter person and it's there policy. She go stuck on a flowchart of negotiations offering me 5 dollars a day. I told her if the daily rate was a penny higher I wanted to cancel. Instead she yelled at me and told me I was being disrespectful. I hope this is recorded somewhere. She called her manager and asked if SHE could cancel out of spite so it would not show as a dissatisfied customer. And that is what she did.
