Rented from Enterprise for a four day trip from Boston to Connecticut and New York, ending here in…read moreHartford. The experience was a good mini road trip, with no hassles or complexity from our rental. One-way car rentals are always quite a bit more expensive than a round trip, so was pleasantly surprised when finding a luxury car (Audi A4) rental from Enterprise being cheaper than an intermediate rental from competitors. It was for 4 days, with return happening at this location early morning before our flight. The Hartford airport has a modern rental car center, connected to the main terminal via an indoor land bridge. Returning was as simple as following the sign for Enterprise car return, leading us to Level 3 of the big parking garage. The attendant directed us where to park, actually scanned us in, and gave us a receipt right then and there. It was then an easy 5 minute walk to the terminal, taking a long skywalk to departures. The process maybe added 10 minutes to what it would have been if we had just been dropped off at the terminal. Addendum: There are a lot of tollways in Massachusetts, and I should have done a better job of figuring it out before we went...would have saved us time. Growing up in Illinois, I'm old enough to remember the workings of manual toll roads: planning out your route, determining how much cash you would need, and then either getting your loose change or changeable bills ready. During most times of the day, there would be lines so determining what queue was the quickest would add yet another driving decision to your trip. Then bulky transponders came out, allowing you to take the bypass (skipping all the cars in line) if you had a working one. After college, living in Wisconsin meant no tolls since the state has proudly never had them on any of their roads. Thus I didn't really keep track of tolling technology much except for the visits to Illinois for family, or the rare car rental in a toll-heavy state. My experience with rental cars and tolls is what really turned me off using a provided transponder. The concept of rental car agencies providing these were new, so wasn't much regulated then The rental car agencies used the same tact as they do for gas fill-up and collision insurance (liability insurance is already included as part of your rental): push it real hard to unsuspecting customers for convenience, but at very high (and profitable) prices. They would include a transponder in your car, and then offer unlimited tolls, for a daily charge often higher than the daily base rate of the rental itself. They would warn you if you didn't purchase it and either 1) use the transponder through a toll or 2) not pay a toll and thus have the toll agency send a bill to the rental car agency much later, they would fine you an amount much greater than what what you would have originally paid. This wasn't as big a deal when there were still manual toll booths to pay as you go...but with the disappearance of them (Massachusetts no longer has any manual booths...everything is electronic), it became a lot trickier. Thus we've chosen to just skip toll road altogether, but we found that this was a huge time suck...a lot more than anticipated. We were still able to do so on this trip, but added a lot of wasted time and stress. For our next car rental in heavy toll road areas, we will consider this (if renting from Enterprise...guessing its similar for other agencies as well...there just wasn't much documentation on-line before...it seems a lot better now): 1. Get a EZ-Pass transponder from a state that doesn't charge a rental fee (like VA or IL). Once we get the rental, tie the license plate to it, turn off the rental transponder. OR 2. Rent a transponder. Every day that it is used, there is a $3.95 fee, maximum of $19.75 per period i.e. 5 days max), plus the toll itself. OR 3. Some states (like Massachusetts) will just bill to the license plate without penalty. Enterprise will not charge a penalty, but instead just act as if you had used their rented transponder (i.e. $3.95 fee daily plus toll). #3 is the case for a lot of other states as well (CO, FL, TX, NC, GA, WA). Previously, I had conscientiously checked the state site to pay for the toll by license plate before they billed the car owner (rental agency) triggering that massive fine. Good to know that rental agencies have gotten rid of that tactic, either because it was better for the consumer or more likely because they were forced to by the individual states.

False $150 toll charges applied without verification 10 days after return!!!…read more please write a 1-star review for Alamo Rent A Car at the Hartford airport: My reservation was from October 9th to 11th. I drove the car within CT to attend the family weekend at the Hotchkiss School. On October 18th, I received a receipt and a notification from my credit card that I was charged $150.9 for toll charges. I was very confused because I've been to Hotchkiss School many times and there are no tolls on the way from the airport. The person at the desk also confirmed when I was taking the car on Oct. 9th. And what toll charges add up to $150 in two days?! So I opened the receipt only to find that the tolls were all the way in Ohio. If any human being was even checking the record, they would see that I picked up and returned the car at the Hartford airport, and the mileage they recorded would not indicate that I drove all the way to Ohio from Connecticut, and back. But they didn't check. They didn't call me. They just charged my credit card.

We had reserved online and rather than rent when we flew in earlier in the week for a local event, our hosts suggested renting just from the morning we headed out to part two of our trip. They generously picked us up from our flight the first evening, we stayed with them for the first part of our trip and then they dropped us back at the rental car site to pick up the car. They live just 20 minutes from this airport and we are so lucky they do. The biggest surprise was that the car was not only ready and waiting, though we had requested and paid for a base model, a brand new Jetta was waiting for us. Please know that what we drive at home is very basic, one is very, very old, the other is middle aged. This car had all the newest connectors to use my phone for navigation (without any adapters like last time) and comfy seating, great AC and a toll transponder in place. It had gadgets we did not even recognize. It took looking in the owner's manual to figure out how to open the gas tank latch to fill mid-trip. It was as clean as it could be. We really enjoyed it for a treat. It operated perfectly the whole trip. It got fantastic highway mileage, which matters these days. (note: It did mandate premium gas though.) Nevertheless, this comfort aspect plus the flawless pick up and flawless quick return at the end of the trip, with amazing staff both times, certainly rates 5 stars. I highly recommend customer service training to the exit gate woman. Again she was extremely rude! I've worked for hertz car rental for 4 years and chose to go with Avis I will never do that again. I never treated a person like she treated me mind you it was a very slow day we were there at 7am on a Saturday morning. I would hate to see how she treats people when it's busy!

Even so, I stepped out of the baggage claim area onto the curb and there was a Budget rental car shuttle sitting right outside the door. I stepped on board and we were on our way almost immediately. The shuttle driver was very friendly and appeared genuinely eager to please. He found out my name, radioed ahead, and found out which spot my rental car was in. It wasn't a long ride. I think within about 5 minutes I was stepping off the shuttle and immediately into my rental car. There was no wait at the exit from the parking lot and I was on the road right away. Even though I'm forced to use the lowest bidder rental car company for my business travel, I was very pleased with the car I got here. It had bluetooth so I could connect my phone and talk hands-free while I drove. It had cruise control so my leg didn't get tired on the 1-hour drive to my destination. It had a backup camera so I didn't have to retrain myself to twist around and look out the back window like I often have to do with other rental cars. Check-in was quick and easy. No wait. I parked, the attendant scanned the bar code, checked the mileage and gas, printed my receipt, and I was on my way. A shuttle bus was waiting. I got on and was at the airport about 5 minutes later. All-in-all very efficient.

Worst rental car experience I've ever encountered will never ever rent again from budget or Avis…read moreand Bradly BDL we booked a vehicle in advance to accommodate my mother who turned 100 for a family visit BD celebration - when we arrived Budget/Avis only had two vehicles left!!! WTF! My mom could not get up into the vehicle so we had a hoist her up then the vehicle showed that the left rear tire was deflated with a flat. We had to wait four hours for a tow truck. The replacement SUV smelled so bad cologne ass vomit. We had to leave the windows down overnight. It was disgusting. We attempted to swap that car out in Saybrook CT on our day trip to the beach with her, but they only budget rental in Saybrook, Connecticut after reaching out to customer service and getting somebody overseas , or who knows where they said they would comp the entire rental. I just received an email from Sawyer, the head manager for Avis and budget saying he's only going comp two days. What should've been a really amazing lovely experience was hit with this unpleasant unacceptable experience. Even the key fob for the SUV replacement was jacked up with scotch tape and was falling apart - so unprofessional I will never rent from these two companies ever again.

I arrived after midnight and was fearful…read morethat the place would close before I got there, so I stressed a bit when I did not see the van right away, knowing that they closed at 1am. Luckily it showed up and there was no line - I was the last customer of the day and the woman behind the desk was wonderfully helpful and sweet. She got me into the rental in minutes. Since I was her last customer, she waited until I got situated in my car. I did have an issue with finding how to turn on the interior lights - I was used to them going on automatically. At least that is what I figured, when she quickly solved the problem by telling me to turn on the headlights. Unfortunately, once I had driven to New Haven I realized that the USB port was not working so I was not able to charge my phone. I was also unable to connect it to the stereo and hands free calling option. I had to purchase a charger that fit into the cigarette lighter for my phone to be able to charge. That, however, is an issue with the car. When I returned it I informed the valet, and I saw him make note of it. I probably should have used that to ask for an additional discount, but it was not such an inconvenience, I already had received an AAA discount, and the shuttle driver was waiting. I rushed to catch it and was relieved to be a little early for my flight home to CA. Once I got home, I filled out the feedback survey. I gave excellent reviews for the service as it was relatively fast for the most part. Then, I realized that I left my parking pass in the vehicle. I figured that it would have been discarded or lost forever but I had to try and call. The main number gave phone tree options which led to a recording telling me the office was closed and to call back during business hours. It was 5:20 am California time, and therefore after 8:00 am and should have been open according to their message. So, I searched their website online and finally found - under Contact Us - their Lost and Found department. It gave a number to reach a human at the Bradley International Airport branch in Windsor Locks. That is when I found Wausa (pronounced Wah-soo). He called three different places; the office, their valet service, and the cleaning crew. He found my parking pass and took my name and information so he could FedEx it to me. I was so grateful for this. I have in the past left behind items in taxis, on the bus, or in a hotel - and it is only on a rare occasion that I am ever able to recover them. This pass would have taken months to replace as I would need to find original paperwork, fill out more forms, resubmit them, and wait for a duplicate copy to be issued, and then mailed to me. Now, with his help, I am able to get the pass in time to use it on Monday. He saved me a lot of stress and bother. I do not rent cars often, but I have used this office twice already and will use it again the next time I visit CT. Their prices are the lowest and my complaints are minor. I am overjoyed that they found my lost item and am grateful for the kind service.

My plans changed and I changed the pick up time to 3:30 PM via a 'manage your reservation' link. Unfortunately on the day of the pick up I spent the morning in urgent care and called them at 2:00 PM to cancel the reservation because I was no longer able to travel. They refused to cancel the reservation 'because the 10:30 AM pickup time was exceeded'. This company is trash and I'm stuck with a $540 bill STAY AWAY!!!

After returning to my hotel, I contacted the police for assistance. Shortly after the police became involved, I received a call stating that my wallet had been located at the rental office. While I was relieved to get my wallet back, the conflicting explanations and sudden recovery left me questioning how the situation was handled. I believe there should be clearer procedures in place for securing and returning customers' lost property to prevent situations like this from occurring.
