The food is consistently amazing and the service is top notch! We always get the chicken tikka masala and palak paneer for dinner (and then share). One dish is plenty for two but we like the leftovers the next day. For lunch they offer a buffet, the weekends have more items as the cost is higher, but it's nice to take advantage of the spread to try new items. And yet, when we order dinner it's always the same two items! I would highly recommend to anyone who enjoys Indian food. You know it's good when you come towards the end of lunch and the kitchen staff comes out to make themselves a plate to eat off the buffet Amending...they appear to have new ownership/management and I think the service has really gone downhill. Went for lunch today and the female server had to be told to bring us water after we had already started eating. She kept talking on her cell phone via Bluetooth ear buds...loudly! The other staff member had to keep telling her to be quiet. At one point he came to the bar and took her phone, ended the call, and took it to the kitchen. She of course followed where there was more arguing. We had to take the pitcher and refill our own waters. We could have cleared our own plates too! Eventually she came out with her phone and 10 minutes after eating we finally got our check. This is not the first time the cell phone has been an issue. The last 2 times we've been there. Might be time to find a new place, which is too bad because the food is delicious! read more

One of my favorite things to do on Saturdays is coming to the lunch buffet with my husband. We came here for lunch with a friend last week. No matter how long it's been since we have last come here, the waiter always recognizes us and is incredibly friendly. He is attentive and kind. The food is just awesome!!!! They always have such a great spread and everything is labeled for allergy purposes. This last time that we went, they had some sort of spicy fried hot pepper. It burns your mouth but is so addicting at the same time! Their chicken tikka masala was on point, as always. They also usually give out naan or some sort of pancake thing, which is a perfect the other food. Love this place!!! I believe lunch buffet is $12.95pp. read more

This is one of the best Indian cuisine restaurants we have come across in CT. Food is as close as you can get to the original dishes as you will come across back in India. This restaurant is not that bad!!! I love the food went here today for lunch time at 2 pm! I loved the buffet they had! My parents loved the rice and the pita bread! One thing that was strange is that the waiters kept on staring at me and my family in a weird way like they thought we were crazy or something... My family is from Argentina and we did speak Spanish in that restaurant they probably just thought it's weird for people to speak that language... Anyways this restaurant is good! The food was almost an edible and I threw everything out after tasting it. It's like the coated each meal from chicken to shrimp to lamb in the same Breading and marinade. We've eaten here a few times. The food was adequate, but not exceptional. The last time we were there, my husband had unsweetened iced tea, his usual drink. They served it in a relatively small glass, and he asked for several refills. When we received the bill, they had charged more than ten dollars for the iced tea. We Haven't been charged for refills on unsweetened iced tea for years, and it is the drink my husband orders in virtually every restaurant. I asked the manager/owner (?) about it, and he was curt to the point of rudeness, explaining that no one gives free refills on unsweetened iced tea. Although that is certainly NOT true, it was his demeanor that left a bad taste in my mouth. In retrospect, I realized that he was super eager to refill, and I had the sensation that he was just imagining the bill adding up. I wish they had been more transparent about the policy (some places indicate no refills on menu), but I guess they aren't obligated to do so. It just felt kind of icky, the manager was smug and condescending and just kind of a jerk. read more

Super friendly staff and deliciously affordable buffet! We went here on a whim for lunch on Sunday when we realized all our favorite Thai places were closed. We were SO pleasantly surprised to walk in and find out there was an $11 all-you-eat buffet offering all of our favorite Indian dishes {tikka Marsala, curry, lentils, korma, etc.} The staff was very warm and welcoming. And attentive! Our glasses never went empty and our naan bread basket was quickly restocked. I am not a fruity drink gal but the waiter insisted I try their mango rum cocktail. It was amazing! {see the attached photo} We definitely plan to include this place in our Sunday lunch rotation going forward. If we worked closer by, we would totally take advantage of their weekly $9 lunch buffet, as well! read more

I've been fortunate enough to eat in may Indian restaurants throughout the US as well as in London and in India. The Avon Indian Grill is different from most others I've visited. You'll notice it the second you walk in. The decor is urban upscale minimalist, clean and uncluttered. There is virtually nothing in the restaurant to identify it as Indian-if you were led in blindfolded, you would have to look at the menu to find out what kind of restaurant it was. The "non-Indian" theme extends to the serving dishes and the plates as well-none of the traditional stainless steel that most places use. All in all, it worked and added to a pleasant dining experience. The food itself was very good. It was not the best I've ever had, but also far from the worst.. It was nicely presented and very tasty. There was a long wait between appetizer and entree on a not too crowded Thursday night, but that could have easily been a fluke. The entree arrived warm, but not hot, which could have been the result of a long wait before pickup. That aside, the service was excellent. I was warmly greeted and checked on often to make sure everything was going well. The style was elegant, yet friendly and sincere. I did find it to be a bit pricey. My dinner-one appetizer, one entree, one nan bread and a beer was $38, including tip. Overall, a good experience and I would likely go back if my travels take me to the area again. The ambiance is nice but the food and service are average and pricey. First of all, it took a while for anyone to come by. Then, when they finally brought the poppadoms, they were stale and clearly from a bag, not freshly made. The bhaji were also fairly tasteless. The entrees (lamb tikki massala and chicken phaal) were actually quite delicious, but expensive at $16 and $15, respectively. My main issue with the service, however, is that the server clearly thought he knew my tastes better than I do. I ordered the phaal extra extra spicy and specifically told him "I've never tasted anything too hot for me". My phaal was not that hot and when he came to check on us, he told me that he had given me the regular and there are three levels hotter. He should have given me the choice at ordering instead of second guessing me. read more

I'd give 4 1/2 stars if I could. I had the lunch buffet, but as a take-out, so I guess the food not being completely hot and fresh had something to do with the missing 1/2 star. When I got there, I was impressed with the decor - very elegant and clean. The buffet is a tiny little stand in the corner. Online, it touts over 20 offerings, but that's not what I counted. It was a little misleading, because they include the chutney and raita and the like in that "20". There were 10 main dishes. Also, a soup (I did not sample), two desserts (not for me) and the chutneys and pickled vegs. I took a box of Bombay Bhajia (vegetable fritters, I got the spinach (divine) and the fried cauliflower (awesome!), tandoori chicken (moist and flavorful), a spinach and potato dish, a cabbage dish, and a simmered vegetable dish that were all absolutely delish. The stand-outs, though, were the Dal Makhani (so tasty, the lentils were perfect) and a chicken dish called Chettinad. It was spicy and spiced, perfectly seasoned and the best thing to dip my naan into! (came with 2 pieces, free). I also grabbed some raita and mango chutney. As a beginner with Indian food, I'm hardly an expert. However, for a $9 lunch, it was awesome. I'll definitely go again! read more

Amazing. Great food. Great people. My family and I are so addicted we'd eat here every day if we could. In fact, several foods we usually don't like (okra, cauliflower, etc.) are delicious when they prepare them. Their weekend buffet is a bargain and is always changing. I was craving something spicy and was recommended this gem by a co-worker. The first thing I found that was different from any other Indian restaurant was the contemporary ambiance, including a nice little bar with some interesting cocktail offerings. The owner, Bobby (great guy), made some nice recommendations - Lamb chops and Phuket fish. I am very picky about lamb, and needed some convincing to try it. I was not disappointed. Finding good lamb chops at a reasonable price can be hard, and this place scores on both counts. An overall great experience. Even writing this review makes me hungry. The staff was very nice. Much better! The tandoori chicken was delicious and tender, the second time, but rubbery and cold the third time. There is a problem with consistency at this restaurant. It never seems busy here. And for me it's hit or miss. There are very few Indian restaurants and after the last experience I probably won't go for a while. The samosa and pakora were excellent and fresh. The overall experience was markedly improved the second time, but the third time (for my anniversary) was a downer. If you get tandoori chicken and order sides, they're a bit overpriced. My wife and I are BIG fans of Indian food, and since we travel a lot have the opportunity to visit may Indian restaurants across the country. It is right in our backyard, but Avon Indian Grill has become our favorite. Since the change of management last year, we must have had the pleasure of dinner there more than 20 times. I must say that each and every time we leave with a smile on our faces (and some euphoria from the hot spices!) I learned the chef is from South India, but the menu is a really good mix of both northern and southern styles. They also seem to have a really good handle on the heat level... my wife prefers something between medium and mild, and I prefer very hot. With only one or two MINOR exceptions, they have been consistent with serving the food with exactly the heat level we want. The decor is lovely... kind of reminds me of New York chic. I agree with the other reviewer that it does not look very Indian, but it is classy, comfortable, and inviting. Kudos to their designer! Service is also outstanding. Everyone is really friendly and seems genuinely concerned that we have a great meal. Oh... they also have a bar, and make THE most delicious lemon martinis. I'm not sure what the secret is, but give it a try. For me, a lemon martini is also a great cool-down from the hot spices. read more

I was at a house warming party and the hosts had catered the lunch. I am generally fussy about food and have rarely found catered food to be good. In fact I do not like restaurant food and one reason could be that I am a good cook and feel that very few cooks know how to cook authentic indian food. Since every one was raving about the food, I went and grabbed a plate and sampled veg korma, kale channa, butter paneer and it was the best I have tasted in catered indian food. A lot of reviewers here say they have had good customer service and the food excellent. I've been to a lot of restaurants, and while this establishment seems to have created a positive image, but I cannot agree with these assessments. My family has ordered extensively from the restaurant, only to find items missing, the wrong items inserted, or the food not ready at the time promised. While dining at the restaurant, I found the service indifferent, and as others have commented - somewhat listless as there appears to be sufficient staff but zero coordination. Why dine here, you ask? Well, there are limited options in the area, and my children liked one particular dish. For the prices asked, the restaurant should be far more professional in the delivery of service; furthermore, when you get an order wrong, don't argue with the customer about it - just make it right, and make it right without question. Over the course of time, given our average dinner check, and the fact that my friends and family will no longer patronize this establishment, I wouldn't be surprised if they lost 50K in business per year. That's a fair amount when you consider that the person on the phone who refused to concede a mistake over a $14 dinner item, could not think of the bigger picture and the implications for their business. read more

Great experience all around. The waitstaff were all very kind and attentive. I went with a group and we shared our choices. I liked all the food I tried. The honey garlic gobi (cauliflower if you're confused.) was good, you really get a mouthful of the honey flavor. Quite sweet. The chettinad curry had deep flavor notes I enjoyed and was quite spicy even with a request on medium(which was fine by me, btw). Chicken Tikka your standard delicious creamy mildly spicy goodness. The Malai Kofta!! So yummy! Granted, everything was great but I think those potato and cheese dumplings were my favorite. The service went beyond my expectations. The staff works hard to try to give patrons an enjoyable meal. My boyfriend had to wait a little longer for his dish(wasn't a big deal) so the restaurant gave him a mango lassi on the house. After our meal, they surprised us with free rice pudding. The rice pudding was good, had a unique flavor. Maybe cardamom? One last thing I almost forgot(we had a lot of food between all of us!) Their garlic naan was some of the best I've had at an Indian restaurant. Soft but a little crispy, that fresh garlic put it over the edge. If you like naan, get the naan! I've never tried Indian cuisine but I decided to step outside of my comfort zone for my husband. We went here to try the lunch buffet so I could get a sampling of several different foods. The interior design is nice. Not fine dining but a decent setting for dinner. It isn't huge inside so I can't speak to the dinner crowd and it's comfort level. They have a nice looking bar as well. The buffet had salad offerings with several sauces like mint chutney, a mango type pudding, varied rices, and main dishes that ranged from mild heat to spicy for the inexperienced. I already knew tikka masala which was very flavorful and rich. I have learned I also like Achari Chicken and their vegetable curry. Everything was fresh and tasty! Because of them I now enjoy Indian cuisine. I'm sure these aren't full on traditional but it is still good food! We have returned more than once read more

I went here for the first time last night although I live locally. They have remodeled and the place is very modern looking unlike many local Indian restaurants. The food was very good and the service was outstanding. They were helpful selecting things for our kids to eat that would appeal to their American palates. The kids had a chicken nacho appetizer and some chicken kabobs. We adults who eat mostly vegetarian had the Okra and a lentil dish. The Okra was fabulous. A little different seasoning and very tasty. Unlimited dosas with various fillings and sauces for $11 if you haven't had a dosa, it's a delicious fresh made crepe filled withh things like paneer cheese, potato, garlic and chiles, masalas, etc. 10 different choices. I'm going to give an update and give them 5 stars...they totally deserve a little better rating than what they have currently. This is a fantastic place to order take out and enjoy at home! We have ordered from here several times now for take out, and not only is the food still nice and hot when we get it home (20 minute drive...and yes, we drive it to get this great food!), but the order is always spot on. My only complaint is they never give us enough mint and tamarind sauce (which I like to put all over my chicken tikka masala)...but really, that's such a minor oversight. We've also tried the Chicken Korma which was awesome!!! And my husband's favorite, the chicken vindaloo...which is a little different here in New England than it is in FL and Vegas where we've had the same dish...but nevertheless still delicious! **Note - most places give you 4 pieces of naan per order...just keep in mind the pieces are bigger from Avon Indian Grill, but there's only 2 per order, not 4. My boyfriend and I were driving around CT for the sake of spontaneity, and saw this place while passing through Avon. He couldn't resist, and I love trying new food so we stopped in to check it out. The waiter was polite and spread his attention around the room gracefully as we decided between the menu or tempting buffet. Since I am not familiar with Indian food (with the exception of Trini goat roti and curry chicken), I suggested we try the buffet, which he didn't mind. He ordered poori. It's baked bread, and in his words "the texture and consistency is amazing". It has a slightly sweet aftertaste, and I highly suggest it. From the buffet I tried biryani, vindaloo, and dal tadka (and a few others I can't remember). Some of it was more spicy than others, which I LOVE. Finally, we finished up with some gulab. My mouth is watering typing that last one. It's an Indian dessert that's like a mini pancake ball soaked in syrup. Definitely try gulab if you get the chance. Anyway, if you find yourself drifting along Avon, drop by this place. The service is nice, the buffet doesn't remind me of the average unsanitary bland typical buffet, and the food is d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. read more

Stopped in here for a late lunch due to being in the area. Very nice men from Nepal host/greet/serve the food. It was authentic and delish. The appetizer of a Samosa Chat was really hearty; I could've eaten that for my meal. The Naan was a little thin and flat, but still good. The Masala sauce tasted more like a tomato soup (and was thin/runny) than anything which was odd to me. The Kadai Paneer was very good but heavy in tomatoes again. Also... A Naan quesadilla?! If you really loves Indian Curry and Tandoori, then you must have to come down at Avon Indian Grill. Avon Indian Grill is the best Indian food restaurant in the Avon neighborhood. All starters are the stellar app and not too expensive. Everything is good, Tandoori, saag and especially The Biryanis - nuts, dried fruit and lots of aromatic spices. Highly recommend. I love the plenty of varieties serving here especially during lunch buffet. The vegetarians in our party were also pleased since there were many curries for them as well. Other dishes served included: chicken tikka masala, lamb with lentils, saag paneer, Chana masala, and more. The staff never left a water glass empty. They gave us plenty of attention and we were a big group and they handled us with great expertise. Very good food! The staff and servers are so welcoming - it felt like we were walking into their home. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side, but very clean and modern feeling. The food was delicious. We tried the onion fritters and the cauliflower appetizer, so good! My husband and I are vegan and we had no problem finding things to eat here.
