First of all I must start my review by saying this was not my idea to AXE throw on Sunday, however I had family in town and they wanted to try it. This isn't even anything that I would ever put on a bucket list. I am fairly coordinated, but being a female and not having a lot of upper body strength I would definitely not recommend trying this. It is about $25 for an hour on a lane. There is a waiver that needs to be read over and signed. One of the employees went through all of the rules, showing us the AXE how to stand, placement of your hands on the AXE. He explained how to remove the AXE once it sticks in the wood. I felt that the employee actually should have shown us an example of how to throw the AXE. He said for insurance reasons he was not allowed to do this and said that each of us could have a test turn at how to throw. He would critique our position, how we were holding it. What line to stand behind and how to step forward to throw it. Thank God that I had beverage to drink because after my test throw, and then attempting to throw again, without any success I was starting to get so frustrated. I actually was mad that I spent the money to do this and not to have had any success with hitting anything. Each person gets 5 turns to throw and then the next person gets their turn. After half an hour I was done and never cared if I ever stepped foot into another AXE throwing place again. I honestly don't know what the big attraction is with wanting to do this. Maybe it is a guy thing. I have no idea. I now can say I tried it, I suck, and I am done trying again. I noticed they had a decent menu with a variety of drinks and even some nice appetizers. I would rather play mini golf then try to throw an AXE, at a painted target, on splintered wood. There is signage indicating the point system and how to score, along with a bucket of small mini golf size pencils so that you can keep score. There is a ship bell, near the wall, this gets rung when you hit a bulls eye. One of your teammates will ring it signifying that you don't suck. The music in the background was upbeat and a great variety. The people in there were very nice and could tell that I was frustrated. They said don't worry you will eventually get it, it takes a lot of practice. I say No thank you I am not interested in every practicing how to throw an AXE again. Now if you are up for a challenge, and in the MKE area then maybe this is something that you would enjoy. I recommend wearing comfortable clothes. I was dressed up since we met up with family, from out of town, and were going to dinner. Maybe I would have hit the board if I were more comfortable. Whatever excuse I use I can say I tried and I failed miserably. It was an expensive thing to try. read more

Date of visit: April 1, 2023 Some friends wanted to do something different for us to celebrate our birthdays and they succeeded with flying colors! AXE MKE is a very fun place to spend a little time and I want to try and come back with my team at some point in the future. Our friends took care of the reservations so I can't speak to that piece but once we got our waivers signed, we were assigned a lane and a...lumberjill? that would walk us through the process and technique. Madison was incredibly friendly and really set the tone for our time at AXE MKE, shout out to her! While we had mixed results with the actual chucking of the hatchets at the wood, we all had a blast. We rented a lane for NYE and had a blast! The lane came with a cocktail for each person, hats and beads, and a bottle of sparkling wine! Marlee was clear and informative in training us on the rules and Nick gave us a lot of pointers as we figured out the technique. Even though it was late and the employees probably wanted to head out, no one was pushy about getting us off the lane at the end of the night and let us keep throwing. We were very happy with all the staff (Esme, Emily, Justin). If I did it again the only thing I would do differently is not pre-purchase balloons because the staff gave free ones to every lane. read more

Ok, it is like so fun. So unique. Not something you could do often or regularly, I don't think, because it is very pricey. Chucking that axe and getting it to first of all, stick, then land in the spot you want it is harder than it looks! HAH! They do give you some instructions on how to properly hold and throw. Then, some of that goes out the window when you're actually doing it. So, they may come over and re-teach you again :) You get a time slot for the lane. So, you want to get there on time/early to sign the waiver, order drinks and such in order to maximize your lane time and $$ spent. I liked they had the canned Babe Rose. Yelping is my weird, nerdy activity that I don't tell many of my friends about (unless they happen to find me on here. Hi, guys!), and this place was BUZZING before it was open. I knew I had to check it out. When my friend from Chicago decided to come up for the weekend, I knew this is where we were going to go. I had no idea what to expect. How does one prepare for axe throwing aside from worrying about amputated limbs? Being a paranoid human, I was a bit concerned about safety, but the staff have an abundance of precautions in place. It was the good arm workout as well, which was an added bonus. It's not cheap, that's for sure. I think we paid $30 each and then drinks are a bit more than standard cost. However, it's so different than other normal weekend activities that it's well worth the price. Too, because of all the wood, it smells like one of those amazing winter-scented candles. As crazy as it sounds... grab a drink and throw some axes!! Of course there's a waiver involved but everyone throwing axes gets a training beforehand and your trainer checks back occasionally to make sure everything is going okay. Plenty of staff floating around too in case you do have questions. $15/ half hour & $20/ hour (per person) - just pay the extra $5 and go for the hour cuz time flies when you're throwing axes. It was cool seeing a guy sharpening axes outside when we walked up - nothing more intriguing than sparks flying (away from the people walking by) when you're considering actually throwing axes with alcohol. The sounds of axes hitting wood and the crowd heard through the open bar front also lured us in, of course. I would recommend reservations beforehand because as this place gains popularity, I'm not so sure you'll be able to walk in and grab a couple lanes as we did tonight. The atmosphere was so much fun, with people laughing, cheering and good efforts by all throwing axes. All of the staff members were friendly and helpful, even when I ordered something off of their drink menus. Impressive selection of alcohol and even a few snacks if you need a light bite (big pretzels & sweets). It's helpful the bar area separates drink order customers (off to the sides) from the ax throwing signups (front and center) so people don't end up waiting when they might not have too. Definitely check this place out - even if you don't want to throw axes yourself (but you will!), it's just as much fun to cheer your friends on & watch neighboring lanes too. AXE MKE ROX! read more

Yep! Been there and (gladly) done that. When a fun random Friday ends up in this, you know Milwaukee is getting creative by the day (and night). Went there after a Moth show and just happened to pass by it and really got intrigued by this concept. The place is sort of rustic with a lot of wood (obviously) and was very open so gives you great summer vibes. They had a fun cocktail and beer+wine menu and I tried the Texas Bull which has Grapefruit Vodka and was a really nice drink. They charge $15/person for half an hour for a booth and $20 for an hour. The hour seems to be a better deal if you know you will hang around for a while but if its your first time and you are just there to try it out then half an hour is plenty of time. One person from their team will come and train you and explain you the rules before you can start throwing the axes around. It's a decently heavy axe but not too sharp. It's a lot of fun to throw it and aim at the Bulls eye! You can compete and have fun :) A great place for a group event and hang out with friends with nice drinks. Highly recommend this to anyone who would like to try out something fun and different in Milwaukee. read more

Some of my friends and I went here to celebrate my birthday. There were 7 of us and we had 2 lanes off to the side. For Covid you have to wear a mask the whole time except when you are drinking and then you have to pull it back up. They give you a tutorial and have you throw a couple of practice throws. He also checks on you while you are there to make sure it's going well. We had so much fun doing something different! I would def do this again maybe for a couple night. My only complaint is that especially with the snow, parking is not great in the area. read more

Went to Axe MKE a few weeks ago and I am definitely not cheap but I thought it was pretty pricy for 4 people in one lane for an hour of AX throwing. The place was virtually empty at 8:00 on a Friday night so I assume the cost has an impact on how busy it is. We had fun but they charge $30 per person per hour in one bay so with 4 of us we paid $120 for an hour. Frankly we could have gotten twice as much throwing if we came in and did two lanes of two people for the same price, but we did not understand the program and the staff did not recommend that. (they were 80% empty) I go to Top Golf and pay $60-$90 (depending on time of day) for a golf bay for up to 6 people for an hour. I guess I was expecting something similar for Axe MKE. Of course, Top Golf is packed with people... Go figure! I probably won't go back. read more

Loved it! This is still pretty fresh to Milwaukee and I have had it on my wishlist for quite some time. My friends and I called ahead and reserved a few lanes for a Monday night and were glad we did because it was surprisingly busy for a Monday. You arrive and fill out a waiver (or you can do this ahead of time online), pay and grab a wristband. You are welcomed to grab a drink if you would like or head to your lane to wait for your safety session. We were quickly greeted at our lane and got the rundown which was the perfect amount of info. Enough to keep you very safe, but not too much that you are wanting to rip your hair out with boredom. In no time we were on our way. I will say it was a little more challenging than I thought at first, but once I got the hang of it it was a blast. Everyone we were with had a great time-it was awesome to try something new and laugh along the way. We can't wait to stop back in the summer when they can open the garage door and let in the summer air. What a fun activity to try! read more

**** HIGHLY RECOMMEND **** What a concept!! Drink a beer, thrown an axe. While this doesn't seem like a safe idea, they keep an eye on you there, making sure no one is intoxicated or acting stupid. And I doubt people will get trashed while there...but who knows, it IS Milwaukee afterall (don't deny it, cheeseheads). With that being said, I'd highly recommend going here for a date night, girls' night out, bachelor party, family fun night, co-worker bonding - I mean, really, do you need any other reasons to throw an axe for 90 minutes? Upon arrival, we were given bracelets and taught how to safely and successfully thrown an axe. They will tell you everything you need to know to have a safe and fun experience. $30/person for 90 minutes. While it was very physically tiring (we apparently need to hit the gym), it was a good amount of time for us. We actually would have been fine with just 60 minutes. Much to my shock, I ended up getting 8 bullseyes (this is the same girl who bowls a 50 and can't throw a baseball without hurting herself). Being good at axe throwing must have to do with my viking Norse blood?? My husband got 12 bullseyes, so really it's less about having viking blood, and more about technique. ;) I hate to brag, but we stopped ringing the 'bullseye bell' after a couple of times. Didn't want to be the show-offs. ;) Since we shredded up that bulls eye - they had to change the middle board while we waited. And then tacked on 15 minutes of play time for us free of charge. Thanks guys!! The workers will come around and watch you throw now and then and give you pointers. I'm not sure if it helped. I feel like I did better when I was doing my own thing. I went on a Thursday around 7:00 and only had to wait about 5 minutes for our party of two. We paid and ordered a couple drinks, then got the spiel from one of the employees. He explained the best way to hold the axe, how to position your feet and how to aim. Can't say it helped much, it really was just getting the hang of it. Went to Axe MKE on a random whim with a couple friends. We got there right when they opened, so we got a lane right away. Walk-ins can get a lane for an hour (apparently if you reserve ahead of time it's 90-minutes). After making sure everyone has drinks (yes, you can drink while throwing axes), they show us to our lane and have an "axe master" go over safety rules, and give us some tips on how to throw the axe. Heads up, this takes about 15 minutes and does count against your time allotment. There's a scoring system to help you turn it into a fun, competitive game. At the end of the time slot I felt like we'd had the right amount of time. We all had a good time. It's probably not something I'd do on a regular basis, but I'd do it again at some point. I have come here a few times now and this is a really unique place to grab a drink in Milwaukee! You can just come and watch or you can pick up an axe and participate (after signing the waiver). I've come here twice for axe throwing, once was with co-workers (makes for a great change up to the hum-drum team builders you could otherwise do) and it was fun to see the boss huck an axe down the lane. The other time was on a first date, thought it would be a more memorable activity than bowling or mini golf. The only thing that really prevents me from putting AXE MKE at a full 5-star is the price. I would love to come more often and throw axes, but at $30/player it's not something I can afford to do regularly. Worth the price once, maybe twice. It's still amusing to stop in and grab a drink while others throw axes and ring bells around you. read more

He was great and repeatedly came to check how we were doing and help out when needed. We had three in our group and an hour was plenty of time. We probably played about 8 games or so which consists of 5 throws per player with different point values based on where the axe lands. It was a nice change of pace to just going and sitting at a bar. SO. MUCH. FUN!! I didn't think I'd have as much fun as I did doing this but it was awesome! My friends and I were laughing and having fun the entire time! So, we went in early. They are not fully open for another two weeks, and in that time between they are doing a soft opening. Right now there is still some building going on but the bar and six throwing lanes are open. The space feels very large and open with high ceilings and lots of areas to move around and sit down. There are large counters that they call the spectator line -- if you aren't throwing, you sit or stand behind it! There is enough space for your whole team (up to six per lane) to be sitting. The bar is kind of a big square so you can sit on either side to get drinks. There is a nice lounge area too with comfy chairs to sit. When it's time to throw, an "Axe Master" guides you on safety and also how to be most successful when you throw. They will hang around during games too and offer pointers. To be honest, it's not easy! The axe doesn't stick always stick, but it was so much fun trying and the longer I was there (and coincidentally, the more drunk I was) I did better! I really want to keep coming back until I'm decent with my friends so we can really compete. For the record - you do not need to be signed up to throw axes to hang out at the bar and drink. I'm so excited about this new bar and will definitely be back. I feel like it's going to be super popular so if you want to throw axes it's probably best to sign up ahead of time on their website! read more

Overall extremely awkward. Definitely plan ahead and make a reservation. I think it was expensive and not well managed the day I went. I booked and paid for my group when I checked in, they charged our group a second time on the card of the person that paid for our drinks. Still waiting on that refund. Our section of the room had 6 or so lanes and they stuck us right on top of another group rather than spacing us out. Then we had to wait 20-25 minutes to start throwing because the group we were not affiliated with had two people running late, so they would not give us the staff overview or let our group start. I'm not sure why we had to squish in next to their lane, no one else came in or played on that side of the room the whole while we were there. Few snack options and expensive for the quality and quantity. Drinks were more reasonable, but very few beer options for a brewery city. read more

I brought a group of friends here this past week for my birthday. We weren't sure what to expect, but ended up have a totally amazing time. We paid roughly $30 per person for 90 minutes of lane time, including a rundown on safety and technique from the axe masters. (For best results, try to release the axe at eye level.) Everyone in my group were beginners, and all but one of us had it down in a few rounds. The house cocktails are great. Try the Paul Bunyan for a refreshing citrusy, cucumber treat. The snacks are interesting options. Ballpark style nachos, warm pretzel with cheese, and strawberry pop tarts. The pop tarts seem odd, but I'll take it. Reservations are made in hour time slots and before we were able to start employees gave us a fast-paced tutorial. Came here to do some axe throwing with my sons- super fun-our second time there. However, the staff wasn't really attentive to us ( came to ask for drinks then never brought them) and the head of the axe fell off as I was starting to throw. No apologies from staff - just brought us another axe. And we were the only people there besides staff. So although it's a fun thing to do- I will probably look for somewhere else to go read more
