I was so excited to try this salon out and left very unsatisfied. I have curly, voluminous hair. My curls aren't tight and can easily be tamed (ask the gals at DryBar). I don't know what happened...but I asked for a simple trim with layers and left with a big poofy mess. My layers were almost nonexistent, the blow out left me with a dry, frizzy 'fro and uneven bangs. There's no exaggeration when I say I could have done better cutting and styling on my own. Less than a month later my hair is lackluster due to the crappy cut. I am completely boggled how this happened based on the earlier reviews. Perhaps Jimmy isn't as experienced with other hair types and textures. Two stars for Jenny and Jimmy who were both very nice and welcoming. But I certainly won't be steeping foot in Aya ever again. read more

Jenny cut my hair and totally hit the nail on the head. I have really typical straight flat Asian girl hair so it rarely looks like it has body. Now it does! I always try to explain how I want my hair to look, "thicker" and other hair stylists have attempted, but only Jenny has succeeded! I'm so impressed! Jimmy is meticulous with every cut and thoughtful about making sure it works with your face, hair texture, and lifestyle. I walked around the promenade after feeling like a rock star with my new bob blowing in the wind like a badass. (Badasses have cute bobs right? hell yes.) I LOVE Aya Salon and am so grateful that Jimmy is in Santa Monica to cut my hair. I just got my cut and color yesterday and now I know what it means to "feel like a million bucks". I was introduced to Jimmy by my aunt who, if you know her, has very discriminating tastes. Trusting her opinion, I went to see him and have never been disappointed in the 7 years that I've been going there. Jimmy is definitely an artist and hair is his canvas. Jimmy is truly amazing! I have been going to him for color and straightening for over ten years and I always love the results. I have difficult, frizzy hair and Jimmy is the only one that has been able to tame it. After Jimmy permanently straightens my hair, it is sleek, shiny and manageable and the results last for at least eight months! A few months ago, I made the mistake of having my straightening done elsewhere to save money. My hair was ruined! It was extra frizzy, dry, and started to break off. I panicked! I called Jimmy. He was so understanding. He was booked for the next three weeks but he fit me in and began the process of saving my hair. It has been three months and my hair is once again silky and manageable. Shoot. If I give more stars I would.I went for the first time in November to get my hair colored for the first time. I was a bit nervous but Jenny is so sweet and really helped calmed my nerves. I wanted a change but not too dramatic. Something subtle and I remember I kept saying not too blonde. I was like a little parrot saying it over and over again. Again I was nervous! lol Jenny did a dry cut with a balayage sombre. I love it! It was exactly what I was looking for. I been going back to Jenny ever since. I came to this salon for the first time today due to a promotion I had bought back in January(Formosi). I came in for a hair-cut and a collagen conditioning treatment that was offered in the promotion. The hair stylist, Jenny, was very positive and informative throughout the entire process. My appointment began with the collagen-conditioning treatment. She was very informative about what the conditioning treatment would do for my hair. It is basically a protein treatment for damaged hair to make it look less dull and damaged. (DO NOT wash your hair with shampoo for two days after the treatment to get maximum results because the shampoo will strip the hair of the collagen protein). The treatment only took 10-15 minutes but I definitely notice a change in my hair. It is bouncier and shinier. Before Jenny cut my hair I told her that I've had bad experiences with getting my hair cut before, especially when I ask for layers. Stylists tend to leave a couple strands of long hair and cut the rest into deep layers which I hate. While cutting my hair she let me know what she was doing as far as how much she was trimming off and when she was giving my hair more texture. My hair does not look shorter what so ever. It just looks healthier and I'm extremely happy with my hair cut. It's been two years since I've walked out of a salon happy with the work they've done on my hair. Also, during the cut I asked her about permanent extensions options because I have been interested in getting some done and she was very honest about all the different options available and how damaging they are to the hair. i really appreciate her honesty. She wasn't afraid to tell me that the permanent extensions are going to damage my hair regardless of how interested I was in getting them done. Thank you Jenny!! I'll definitely go back!. read more

I usually don't write negative reviews, but I felt like I needed to warn others who may have fallen into the same trap. I bought a voucher on the Promenade from a company called Formosi that offered a package deal of a hair cut, massage, manicure and facial for $65 from Aya Salon. It seemed too good to be true, but other salons I have gone to in the area have been really nice so I figured I didn't have much to lose. I had already gotten my hair cut but wanted to add a few more layers to the cut. I went into the salon and asked for a few long layers in the back and layers in the front. I asked her to make sure it looked very natural because i didn't want anything choppy. I also asked her to taper the front of my hair. My hairdresser was super nice but she did not know what she was doing and her technique was very poor. It reminded me of getting my hair done at a hair school. My hair was chopped into several different lengths quite bluntly. It was a terrifying experience and even the front of my hair is uneven. When I pointed out how terrible it was looking and that she seemed to be cutting more hair than I anticipated, she blamed the cut looking poorly on the fact that my hair was darker on the bottom than the top. I am having to schedule an emergency hair cut to save it because even pulled into a pony tail the hair pieces she cut in the front that fall out are completely uneven. Note to self. Don't buy vouchers from strangers on the promenade. No matter how confident they are about the services they are providing. This was a scam. read more

Jimmy, and AYA Salon are the absolute best. Jimmy has been cutting and coloring my hair for over 10 years and he always does such a great job! He is very meticulous and always takes time to make sure that the final cut is perfect. I always walk away feeling so much better than when I arrived. When it comes to color, he gets it PERFECT every single time - whether it's single process or more with highlights, etc. In fact, the reason I went to him in the first place was that I loved someone else's color SO much that I asked her who did her hair.
