Authentic Thai food at its best. This has got to be one of the best Thai places in the metropolitan area, up against my other favorites, Nusara and SriPraPhai. It's far enough to not draw the masses from lower Broadway, but for those lucky enough to come here, you won't be disappointed. The place is quaint with only about 14 tables seating two people each. They can be connected to form larger groups, but overall, it's a small intimate place so don't plan on bringing large parties. And what really validates this place as being authentic are all the Thai people that come here. I was surprised that about 1/2 of the clientele seated where Thai. I didn't even know that many Thai people existed in Elmhurst!! Ayada doesn't try to cater to American palates, they serve traditional Thai dishes that you won't find at other places!
The ambiance was modern and up to date with the lime green and red walls yet appeasing to the eyes, and they kept it simple with what appeared to be photos of royalty and some mini (faux?) cactus-like plants. Dark wood-lacquered tables and chairs, with a large 8" tall candle sitting on each table. Somehow, it all tied together to make it one homey experience. Table service was superb, first beginning with our waitress who greeted us with many smiles and letting us take our time perusing through the menu. She brought two very large glasses of water, which I can say is a great idea because some of their dishes can be spicy!! But throughout our meal, another gentleman constantly came by to refill our glasses of water before they ever neared empty. All the staff there just seemed to be in really good spirits and their genuine kindness really flowed to us, making us feel right at home.
For appetizers, we started with the Raw Shrimp Salad ($9.00) which is a MUST TRY! Seven raw shrimp each topped with a thinly shaved piece of garlic, chili and lime juice. There was also a thin slice of bitter pepper /melon complimenting each shrimp. In the middle was a mound of pickled and spicy julienned carrots. I didn't know what to expect as I never had raw shrimp before. I was expecting them to be slimy but I was wrong! The spice was insane but it wasn't overwhelming. It might be to the curious spice eater, but for those that really like spicy food, this is one dish that you can truly appreciate. The spice was more than enough to keep the tongue and mouth heated for some time, yet not affecting the throat. But through all that heat, the saltiness, acidity from the lime and semi-firm texture really made for a refreshing and outstanding ceviche that I could come back for time and time again. If you're not one to eat spicy food, ask for it not too spicy, otherwise, you'll be in for a surprise!
Next was the Sauteed Chinese Broccoli with Crispy Pork ($10.00). The bitterness of the Chinese Broccoli was there as this vegetable is naturally bitter, but they sauteed it perfectly to only give it a hint of bitterness. The crispy pork had a nice layer of crispy skin, tasty fattiness and tender piece of meat. Oooh, and I forgot about the little pieces of crispy bacon-like bits. Yum!! The dish as a whole was sizable, however I found that most of the dish was Chinese broccoli with only several pieces of crispy pork. For $10, I would have appreciated some more protein, but as the menu states, it is Chinese Broccoli WITH crispy pork, rather than the other way around.
And finally the Drunken Noodles ($9.00). Sautéed wide and flat rice noodles with chili, basil leaves, and choice of meat, which we opted for beef. The noodles were neither oily nor clumped together. Every flat noodle was covered in the sauce and consistently soft throughout (I can't stand when some restaurants make the error of having parts of the flat noodle firm and other parts super soft). The beef was tender and flavorful. As an added treat, there were also broccoli and carrots to give it a crunchy texture, and onions to give this dish a subtle sweetness. The chili, red and green Thai peppers gave it some notable spice yet the layers of flavor were so distinct and complex (salty, sweet, spicy) which made for an unbelievably delicious dish. I honestly have to say this was one of the best drunken noodles I've had in quite some time.
My taste buds are salivating just thinking about this place. I'm hesitant to post this review as I want to keep this place to myself, but I wouldn't be a true Yelper if I didn't share my positive experience to all my fellow Yelpers! So if you're looking for Thai, this is the place! Forget the overcrowded SriPraPhai and crazy traffic by Nusara. Ayada is priced right, the staff are very personable, food is fantastic, and it just makes for an overall very enjoyable experience. Oh, and I forgot to mention, Ayada is BYOB. We didn't know, but we saw other customers with bottles of wine chilling in buckets of ice, while others brought cans of beer. Truly, a place that cannot be overlooked. read more
