This review is long overdue. I've been coming to Ayla since June 2019 when I found out the shop carries May Lindstrom products. May is really strict about where she stocks her products so I knew Ayla would have similar standards and they do. Ayla is my one-stop-shop for skincare, sunscreen, makeup, hair care, body wash, lotion and oils, hand creams, supplements, and even chocolate. No other green beauty shop in The Bay Area compares. I have eczema and sensitive skin so I had to cut out conventional products from my routine and switched to green makeup and skincare lines. Since I initially came here for May Lindstrom, I've discovered and tried other skincare lines that I love like Twelve Beauty, Vintner's Daughter, Marie Veronique, and Kristina Holey, MyHavtorn, and Yuli. I suggest getting a sample kit to get you started. Dara and her team are so knowledgeable about skincare and can help guide you to the best regimen. If you are looking for makeup, I've had my makeup done by Melissa multiple times and she is great at teaching new techniques to best accentuate your natural features. Sara's Gua Sha oxygen facials are lovely I really do miss them. I'm so happy the shop still offers curbside pick up and virtual consultations during COVID. While I can't get a facial right now I am enjoying Ayla's in house seaweed soak. It's an intense bath set that is the definition of a spa treatment at home. Before covid, the shop hosted fun events where you meet the makers of the products. Such a great pl to geek out about green beauty products. I live in the neighborhood walked by this tiny hidden gem 100 times, never noticing it. It was only when looking for a product online that I clicked on their website and realized I live just 4 blocks away. I've come in several times now and I always leave feeling like the experience could not have gone any better! Unlike many other shops in the beauty category, there is no attitude in this shop and no pressure or sales tactics. I felt that everyone who works here had a real desire to help me find exactly what I need by assisting with color matching or recommending what could work best for me based on my skin concerns. Then after I've been assisted the staff just lets me make my own decisions in whatever time I need. I also appreciate that the people who work here are nonjudgemental and treat you with respect and kindness no matter what you look like. I've come here twice on the way to a workout with no makeup on and scuffed up shoes, an old hoodie, and a baseball hat. Nobody batted an eye or treated me like I was lesser or going to steal something! This happens to me in a LOT of other beauty stores. As long as I keep using products that are carried here I will support this store not only because it's so close by but also because the service is great and all the staff are so kind and knowledgeable. Also definitely planning on trying the oxygen facial with Sarah some time this summer. read more

My favorite beauty / skincare shop!!! It was about a year ago when my best friend living in London asked me if she can order some skin products online and deliver to my apartment in New York, then I got to know Ayla. They picked my interest because they offer a consultation kit at a very reasonable price, for which you fill in a very simple survey which helps them to prepare a great sample kit for you. The sample kit is very generous, the goal is for you to find out what products work the best for you. After you receive the samples, they will follow up with you by email, even though I live in NYC and they are based in SF, they are very responsive and I feel that they take great care of their clients! So far I have interacted with Nora, Dara and Lin, they all are delightful and attentive, they check in with me every now and then to see if I have any question and they never try to sell me anything for the sake of selling, which I really appreciate. Whenever I have skincare question or need their suggestion on products, they came back to me very quickly and also send me different samples depending on what I need. Because I can try the samples, I feel more reassured when I make actual purchase. I love Ayla and highly recommend it! read more

Thoughtfully curated shop with with products that are reliably clean, which takes out a lot of the ingredient-scrutinizing if you have very sensitive skin. The product descriptions on Ayla's website show how much care and thought the team puts into choosing the products (who writes the descriptions?? She/he should win an award). If you subscribe to the email list, you get notified of special events and workshops that Ayla hosts, featuring facialists/makeup artists/etc. If you visit the store in person, you get very personalized attention and great recommendations. So with all that, I wish I could give 5 stars...Ayla fortunately carries the amazing Kristina Holey + Marie Veronique line, including the Barrier Restore Serum that's quite hard to find (Credo doesn't carry it). I regularly order from the website and one time my package got lost...it was around a $40 item but Ayla would not help replace the lost item or give a refund. I got to Ayla per the recommendation of a friend after my skin DRASTICALLY changed post the birth of my son & my long standing skin care routine was not working, AT ALL. Before I got to Ayla, I had a BRUTAL trip to a few skincare counters in Union Square. With my newborn in tow, I was slammed for letting myself go, using horrible products & upsold on multiple expensive alternatives. I explained that I was low maintenance & could not have a 6 step routine. In addition to not listening to my needs, the counters were very stingy about samples. I said that I need to see how something feels on my skin for more than a minute before I make a purchase. ANYWAY - the point of this review is not to slam the traditional cosmetics industry, but to explain how pleasant & simply amazing it was to work with Ayla. Before they had their storefront, I communicated with them online & they sent me numerous samples to try before making a purchase, with out putting any pressure on me. Ayla also understood that I did not have much time to put into my skin routine & respected that wish. Now with the Ayla storefront, I am able to stop in for a quick consult & products. Each time I visit they are incredibly helpful, honest, unassuming, more interested in listening & finding a solution, versus trying to sell lots of expensive items as quickly as possible. I've been ordering from Ayla for over a year and half. I love that I can relax and order anything from their site and not worry about harsh chemicals or unsafe ingredients. (I'm vegetarian and I equate this to going to a vegetarian restaurant and being able to order *anything* from the menu. Love it!!) Ayla carries a wide range of interesting products and are always introducing new ones. In my time with them, I've tried several brands/products. It's been fun. And now with their new shop, I can simply hop over and pick up new product. Yes! They give great advice and throw in carefully chosen samples with each order. Ayla offers a beautiful array of safe skin care items (very important to me as skin absorbs much of what we put on it!) and everything is available on line or in the store, so you don't have to live nearby to order conveniently from them. They are committed to finding the right balance of products for each of their clients and they really care, which is so wonderfully different from the big box stores I used to purchase from. This review has been a long time coming. I walked into Ayla 5 years ago with a toddler on my hip, pregnant with my second son and in a search for organic skincare or anything to solve my skin problems. Feeling no judgement and no pressure to buy a thing, the women at Ayla solved my skin issues in 10 minutes by looking at my skin and asking questions. This was something 16 years of dermatologists/medications/topical creams couldn't do. My skin has never looked better and the women at Ayla have truly changed the way I look at what I'm putting on my body and in my body and how these things affect my skin. Shortly after my kit arrived in the mail, I made an in-person appointment with Dara, and I have become a devoted regular Ayla customer for almost a year. The ladies are helpful, practical and responsive. They don't try to pressure me to buy products I don't need or can't afford. They are great about adding sample products to try out and Dara provides detailed notes on how to best use whatever products I've purchased. As a world traveler and living abroad for short and long stints, my skin takes a beating. Add on the living with Celiac Disease and another dimension is added for skin care needs. Feeling frustrated while living in Alexandria, Egypt I came across a review for Ayla. Knowing I would be returning home to California, I contacted Ayla about my skin needs. I was surprised by the quick and personal responses I received from Lisa and Dara. My point person daughter went to Ayla and received some advice and her sample kit. It was an immediate "Yes" that this would be a safe skin haven for me. Lisa had my samples waiting for my return to SFO and I was into trying the samples that evening. Perfect choices, a week later into the cute little shop and purchasing the correct products to get my skin into better condition. I cannot say enough for the service, the meticulous caring for what each person's skin needs (they have counseled my daughter, son-in-law, son, and husband), and they listen to your needs for skin, routine, and cost. I was originally looking at trying some products from Organic Pharmacy but they don't accept any returns (I would hate to spend a good chunk of money on something that my skin didn't react well to). I looked to see where their products were sold and found Ayla. I filled out an online form regarding my skin and was given a consultation (free!) with Lin. When I showed up she had products lined up for me and gave me her honest thoughts on products as well as what other customers have said. I made 2 purchases that day (although there is NO pressure to buy anything) and also purchased the sample kit. Although some of the samples look small, they've lasted me a while and it's been a great way to try out some of these products. I loved everything I purchased and thanks to the sample kit, I know which of the products I like more than others so I know what I want to purchase moving forward with Ayla. Also, they were doing a promotion for a line they carry where they were offering free facials. Lin contacted me to let me know and was able to schedule me in. I really appreciated it. She is really there to help answer any questions and make the best recommendations possible and I'm picky (I prefer organic and vegan without crap chemicals).
