The store is a hidden gem in the city. I went after reading reviews so I knew I had to knock to get inside. The store front also says to knock so it's not a secret. The store has SO many nail tools and supplies. I ended up staying about an hour just looking and left with a few gel polish and a tool. The price is definitely cheaper than Amazon, or other general stores. However, the store may not have every color you're looking for. The worker was also very kind with any questions that I had. Do you know how fortunate beauty lovers like myself are to have a shop like Yo's around in the city?? Prices on nail polishes and gels here are a fraction of what drugstores and beauty supply stores charge, and even 40-50% less than what a license-only store like CosmoProf sells them for! I think "Nail Supply" describes the store more accurately than beauty supply. The day I went, the staff happily answered all my questions since I was purchasing gel polish for the first time. The man told me that I should also purchase a gel top coat and base coat to go with it (clearly I failed to do my research before coming in) otherwise I wouldn't get the durability of the gel. I'm so glad he informed me, otherwise I would've been so disappointed if my gels chipped off! The staff treated all patrons in the store kindly the day I was there. Pro tip: don't be offended if the staff treats you with suspicion...as you know, the neighborhood isn't the best and judging by the fact that the door's closed til you knock, you KNOW they've had to deal with unpleasant situations. Cut them some slack because the losses add up to a small business owner. I don't stay up to date on which collections rotate in the stock, but I know that they do carry prior season's colors too, so if any colors you like have been discontinued, chances are that Yo's still carries some! They've also got waxing kits, mani/pedi supplies, lotions, and other spa-day goodies, and since it looks like we're going to be staying at home for the long haul, I recommend stocking up and DIYing your own nail salon and spa in the safety and comfort of your own home :) read more

Dude.... This place is NAIL POLISH HEAVEN! I spent over half an hour in this store while my friends were waiting in the car outside just going back and forth deciding which colors I wanted, and looking through their whole selection. THEY EVEN HAVE COLORS STACKED UP IN BOXES OF 6! All labeled with numbers, some with colors... They sell everything from Zoya, Essie, OPI, Orly, and other brands. Also a bunch of old nail polish that has separated in plastic boxes. They carry, nail polish thinner too, top coat, bottom coat, anything you can think of. Beauty supplies from gloves, lotions for salons, shampoos and conditioners, falsies, fake nails, even GEL nail polish. It is vietnamese owned, and seems like they aren't really fluent in english but was pretty helpful when I had questions. Majority of the selection that I was looking at was OPI and Essie. Something I didnt rlly like about this place is that they have so many old nail polish for clearance. Even their china glaze was all yellowish on the top of the bottle. I like the fact that DBS is just down the road from me. I like the prices at DBS. There's affordable and expensive, depending on what you're looking for, and the quality matches the price. I like the huge stock they have, from body to hair to nails. I like the variety of their stock, there's quite a bit too browse through. What I don't like is that when they're low on something, it's pretty obvious, and they're not always on the ball with restocking it. I came in for Manic Panic hair dye (or frankly, any brand of punk hair dye) and there were about 20 bottles of three colours available, colours that I suspect are the least popular. There were no other punk colour dyes available and when I asked, the guy said they wouldn't be restocking the MP for another few weeks to a month. Sadly I left the store without spending any money and ordered my dye and bleach kit directly from the brand. It's not out of my way to stop in, but I'm not sure how often I'll check up if their stock on some products is so low and not quickly refilled. I went in here looking for monomer. They sold me what was their "most popular, most sold" monomer. Later that day I tried out the monomer, it didn't work how it's supposed to. Im guessing it was MMA because it was not setting properly, it was gummy. And when I tried to remove the monomer with 100% Acetone it was this sticky gummy texture. I only used maybe 97% of the liquid so I decided I would try to return it . The man working there was very rude started yelling and did not accept my return. I told him I had problems with the monomer and that it was probably MMA, he then proceded to tell me "No no no we always sell this monomer its our best one". Implying that theres no way the monomer I bought could've been bad. I understand that they have a Final Sale No Return Policy, but I think someone running a nail business should be more understanding & professional about making sure they are not selling MMA products. DONT BUY THEIR MONOMER. Maybe dont buy any of there products everything in that store looks old like they are just trying to get rid of everything. read more

I've been going to this place for some times to shop for OPIs. The owner is always rude/hard to communicate with and I expect that. But I had the most horrible and bizarre experience at this store today. Let alone the utter lack of customer service but the owner thinks it's ok to yell at his patrons for asking a simple question. I bought a wrong color and went back less than 5 min after to ask if I could exchange with another. The owner hysterically yelled at me until I told him to stop?!?! I had never asked for a refund or exchange before and his hysterical response to my simple inquiry left me confused and dumbfounded. "I just bought this 5 min ago. Can I exchange with another color?" "No no no no no!!!!! No return no exchange. Nail polish you open bottle no return no exchange (on and on and on)" "ok ok fine I'll buy another" He literally followed me around the store to keep ranting and harassing me, while I was shopping for the correct color. I guess he was soooo mad that I dared to ask for an exchange? Since he previously said its ok to open bottles to look at colors (he said his store is the only store with this policy and I should be grateful lol), I opened a few bottles to find the right red color that I was looking for. Then he comes over and yelled at me for opening "too many" bottles for buying only one polish. In fact, to date, I bought more than 30 bottles of nail polishes at this place. So I asked then if he could help me find the color I needed so I didn't have to open bottles, he said there are too many colors and he can't help!!! By this time, it's almost comical. He basically wants you to come in, find the exact color you want without opening a single bottle (don't know when that policy applies) and leave asap. If you want to feel threatened while shopping, this is the perfect place. read more

The guys who own this place and run it are really nice but there is some serious miscommunication going on. If you speak Vietnamese, you're in luck but I need you as my translator. They're a little slow in getting collections in and they don't understand what you're asking for half the time. For example you need some help? "oh i'm looking for essie french affair collection? no have. we no have. "no? but my friend just bought some from here a few days ago" no. we no have. but we have ballet slippers, blank, good french color but individual. you buy separate, no set. "no no, I don't want those. I want the french affair collection. St. Tropez, Topless & Barefoot?" no. we no have. *sigh* I think he just meant that they're out of stock. Like everyone else said, no China Glaze (sad). Also no NuBar, Finger Paints, or Color Club. Orly selection is pretty small. Their selection on OPI is pretty extensive in permanent colors but hard to find a lot of past collections. Their Zoya is all over the place. The latest collections are usually at the front counter. I guess I have to drive down to San Jose or wait for when I make another trip down to the OC... And yes, I am a girl who knows her nail polishes and yes, I really do know them by name and collection. So what!? So if you're looking for the Essie Braziliant, give these guys a few weeks to get it in because they don't have it yet... and don't bother asking when they'll get it because they probably won't understand you. Try writing it down. And yes, they currently do have Serena Glam Slam and the OPI Pirates collection but they are pretty low on it. Call ahead first if that's what you're looking for. read more

I'm torn between giving this place 3 or 4 stars.. I truthfully want to give it 3.5.. but since that isn't possible I'm gonna go for 3 since I've been to better places. Sort of by the TL.. across from a strip club and down the block from 1000 Van Ness, this small beauty supply store has some hair products, nail stuff and salon items. We came here for the discounted nail polishes. $4 for essie and $5 for OPI.. can't go wrong since they sell for about $8+ at regular stores. The selection is not that great, but they do have a lot of OPI collections and their colors are labeled and the owner was very nice to tell us that he had the new collection in and even showed us and everything. As everyone else said, it's sad to see that they don't carry China Glaze.. maybe they should look into carrying it.. looks like they'd get a lot of business for that brand. This place rocks for really discounted supplys for the basics of manicuring, waxing and shampoo supplys for cheap as in hair salon quantity . It's far from glamorous ! And if I have a problem finding something the owners are more than happy to help because it's very tight in this small place. Prices can be sometimes non existent so just ask nicely and / or explain that you don't need a pack of 25 nail files and they give really great prices for individuals. Basically if your not a liscensed cosmetologist you CAN shop here and basically forget shopping at walgreens. It's like a farmers market for beauty supplys. Try it you'll like it ! Actually christmas is comming , maybe buying 25 nail files and giving them as stocking stuffers along with Opi clear nail polish and a buff square in a little velvet pouch would be doing friends a fun favor! I just put that together willy nilly. Add additional enticements when needed.... large foot file for those friends with the callouses from hell and perhaps a bottle of wine when taking them off ! read more

ANNOUNCEMENT!!! They now carry China Glaze! Yes this is a big deal, especially to polish lovers such as myself. When I came in (aka today, I couldn't wait to yelp this) they were on sale for $2.50 each, buy 12 or more get them for $2 each! You can't beat this! There's an adequate amount of colors, and I was able to pick up Unpredictable, the Chanel - Peridot dupe. They also carry Essie, OPI, Zoya, and Orly. Their restocking schedule seems to be random, because they have the brand new Mariah Carey collection from OPI, and they also have the Ornate- Holiday/Winter collection from Zoya. However, their Essie selection looks like it hasn't been updated for years lol, save for a few colors from the holiday collection. I only come here for polish, so I can't say much about any of the other products offered. Also, many people may be put off by the customer service, but I've always had positive experience with the men working here, not so much the women. Also, I am vietnamese, so that might make a difference.. I definitely recommend you come here for any polish needs. You save so much money, and for the true polish addicts out there: we all know its worth it. read more

They were willing to lose a customer over $2.00!!!! Uggh! So disgusted! They've lost a customer for good! SF is a tough market for a black woman to find hair care, and I guess this store figures they have a captive audience. I'm used to paying high prices in SF, but it's amazing how I can come into the store one week and pay one price then the next week pay a completely different price. On this occasion I didn't complain (see captive audience comment above). I paid for my shampoo dutifully. I went to my car and double checked that I purchased the right item.. The drive from my neighborhood is a trek I didn't want to repeat. As it turned out, I bought the wrong item. I promptly returned to the store :LESS THAN 5 Mins later to purchase the correct item. It cost a little less, BUT they wouldn't give me a refund. They offered me a store credit which I will NOT be using anytime soon! When I questioned their policy and asked to speak to the manager, the woman behind the counter sighed and rolled her eyes! I approached the "manager" and she wouldn't even make eye contact with me, in fact she had her back to me the majority of the time! I felt unappreciated and ignored. When I asked them if they were willing to lose a customer over $2, the staff seemed completely unfazed. The woman handed me a handwritten receipt for a store credit and explained that that was their policy. End of story. My friend and I just dropped by earlier after hearing all the rumors that San Francisco too has a place with cheaper nail polish. I'm not gonna lie, after stepping out of the car and being in the TL, we were second guessing ourselves and questioning whether or not the nail polish was worth it. We were scurred! BUT, luckily the shop is the less shady parts of the Tenderloin. So ladies, no worries. We can still feel safe getting our discounted goods. The place did seem a little cluttered but hey, we're all going there for the nail polish anyways right? It's in front, middle of the store. OPIs, Essie, Orly and Zoya, and the newer collections are on the counter. No China Glazes though so I was a little sad off of that. Almost like a stocking warehouse for beauty supplies for hairdressers and beauty salons. They have brand names like Essie, OPI, and China Glaze, and Zoya at around 50% of what you'd get at traditional drugstores like Walgreens/CVS. They also have lots of shellac polishes and NYX products. I paid around $12.50 for 3 bottles of nail polish. Totally worth a $2 Muni ride over. The organization of this place could use some work though. Again, it seems less like a store for the public and more like an outlet. Products are still in coded boxes and scattered all around. It's best to ask the staff if you have something in mind that you're looking for. They usually have a good idea where everything is. When I was there, they were sold out of several Essie colors, but said they would be restocking soon. Will be back soon to check on that! Bonus: they even accept credit card! read more

This place is a hidden gem! My latest beauty obsession is nail polish and Walgreen's just doesn't cut it when it comes to selection now that I appreciate quality nail lacquer. I only work 2 blocks away from New Look, so I can't believe that I didn't know it was there, but that's prolly because I wasn't looking. (I think this place used to sell "eh-hem" dvds for "grown-ups" - but don't quote me on that) The store is a decent size, but it's packed with lots of goodies, so the aisles are small and if there are several other shoppers - particularly in the nail polish sections, it's a tight squeeze. No matter though! Where else can you buy OPI, Essie, Zoya & Orly for 5 bucks or LESS? (Plus 2 or 3 other brands that I've no interest in). For you nail fanatics in the know, they also have Poshe (but no Seche Vite - boo!) So sad that I bought some Essie nail polish on eBay only days before finding this place. There is a grandpa looking dude who kinda eyeballs you when you first come in, but I'm sure its because he's had to deal with some sketchy peeps from the TL. The way I see it, the prices are already a steal, so why bother with the 5-finger discount? I want this place to stay in business to feed my need! Oh yeah, the hair supplies rock, too! The people there are a little scary though because they watch you while you shop like your going to steal something .... especially the old man that barely knows how to speak english. Cheap Essie, OPI, and China Glaze? I'M THERE. I was so excited when I found a place that sold cheap brand name nail polish. I seriously want to kick myself after sending $8 to $10 on a teeny bottle of paint. $4 per bottle still hurts, but much less. With this economy, it's pretty good. I love that there is such a HUGE selection of polishes to choose from. It is literally heaven in here, and I often can't stop at just one bottle. The Vietnamese guy is also very friendly, the first time I went, I think he could tell that I was a student (carrying a monster-sized backpack + 3 textbooks!) and he didn't charge me any tax! Whoohoo! The second time I went in he charged tax, but honestly I don't mind! I could buy two Essies here for the price of one. Who can beat that? Tips: Find out the number that Essie polish is before you go there. Every Essie bottle has a number on the label if you find it at Walgreens, for example. Google it and it will tell you the number. There is a chart with all the Essie names and numbers in the store. All the polishes are listed by number on the rack, so you could use this to find your polish, instead of looking at the bottom of each bottle. I don't think this applies to OPI, but I'm not completely sure. Pick from the little cardboard boxes at the bottom of the racks, a lot of the ones on the rack are old and have separated. Don't bring anything big and bumbly in here. The aisles are super narrow and can really fit one person in the aisle, otherwise you might find yourself knocking over a bunch of tiny glass bottles! Here is something I cannot figure out though, on Google maps it says that this place is closed? Is this true or not, I cannot figure out. I really wanted to like Discount Beauty Supply more than I was able to. After all, it's just a couple of blocks from where I live and I'm getting tired of paying full-price for the few specialty items that I need, from Pure Beauty. So I called DBS. A man answered the phone "Hello?" "Uh...hello -- is this Discount Beauty Supply?" "Yes." C'mon, folks: announce yourself when you answer the phone. I then asked if he had the item I was looking for -- Redken Water Wax. "Yeah, we have Redken shampoo." "I'm not looking for the shampoo; I want Redken Water Wax." "OK, OK, we carry Redken. OK, bye-bye" *sigh* So, on the chance that they had the product in-stock, I walked over. As others have mentioned, it's a crowded store -- more like a warehouse store in miniature form. I found that they did indeed have one tub of Water Wax, which made me happy. It had a price tag of $17 on it, which is what I have to pay at Pure Beauty, which didn't make me happy. But, since I was already there, I decided to get it. The manager (owner?) said "You get 20% discount", which made me happy again. I paid and left the store with my purchase. On the way home, I decided to unscrew the lid and look inside. There was a big finger-gouge out of the product as if someone had used it as a tester. Nowhere on the container did it say "tester".
