This is my go-to spot for Indian food in the area! I always start with the samosas, and for my entrée, my favorites are the butter chicken or the lamb saag paired with a side of Peshawari naan. Every meal I've had here has been full of flavor, and the portions are always generous and satisfying. The service is always kind and welcoming also! This wasn't just a bad meal,it felt like a cultural letdown. We're visiting the area and trying to make some family memories. Ordered what we hoped would be a comforting, mildly spiced chicken biryani. What arrived was anything but. It was more like a confused pulao, frozen peas, capsicum, soggy rice, and even burned cashews tossed in like an afterthought. No aroma, no balance, no care. Just disappointment in a takeout container. This isn't about being harsh. It's about honesty. When a restaurant calls something biryani but serves this, it doesn't just miss the mark, it misrepresents the culture. Indian cuisine is rich, layered, soulful. This had none of that. Some people are fortunate to bring their food heritage to the U.S., but when you take shortcuts like this, you're not sharing the culture, you're flattening it. It was 9:40 PM. Dinner should be a time of calm and comfort, especially while traveling. Instead, we ended the day irritated, and after just a few bites, we had to toss the food and head to another restaurant. The food CAN be great but takeout culture has completely destroyed this place. Want meat samosa? Too bad they sell out in the first hour. Want to dine in? 2 Hours or more before you get your food. The last time we went and sat down for dinner it took no less than 3 hours and the couple at the table next to us sat for 2 hours and their food never came out, they ended up getting up and leaving. Time to cut the phone line especially on Friday and Saturday nights when people have the time and money to go sit down. What's the point of having a full sized restaurant with seating if you prioritize takeout to the point you can't get served inside? At this point why even own a restaurant? The owner of this restaurant came over to our table and stroked our 2 year old daughter's cheeks while we were having dinner. I was too in shock to even speak. He went to do it again and my husband very sternly said " do not touch my child" and he walked away. When looking through the 1 star reviews on google, it appears someone else complained about him doing this two years ago to their 3 year old son, in which the family also told him not touch their child and they left immediately after. Clearly this man learned nothing from that interaction because he is still touching children without consent. He made my daughter uncomfortable and his interaction with her felt predatory and like we were dealing with a pedophile. Do not go here with children. read more

This is one of the few spots locally you can get authentic Indian cuisine. Last year we tried them for takeout. The prices are a little high and portions are on the smaller side. This may be because we got takeout. So we will give them a try for indoor dining. Flavors were good, but didn't compare to some of my favorite spots in Providence area. Great Indian cuisine, always consistent. A few things to consider for dining in...very limited wine selection, as well as beer. And you might have to deal with the owner creeping around the dining floor talking to you! As for take out, don't be in a rush!! Orders take easy 60-90 minutes!!! On a few occasions, tandoori food selections aren't available, but plenty of items on the menu. If you can deal with that, you won't be disappointed with the food. read more

We ordered a lot of food, including lamb saag, saag paneer, tandoori mixed grille, a couple kinds of naan, and a couple vegetarian plates. Everything tasted amazing for takeout. The meat was not dry, the portions were ample for the price. The reason for the two stars is the packaging. On their website they have this whole thing about illness and using food as medicine which I thought as a marketer was a little tacky since yes food is medicine but NO it won't come close to curing coronavirus so why mention it and reference COVID-19. Anyway, the reason it was particularly tacky is they offer all of that delicious, healthy food in styrofoam and in some cases for my order, melted styrofoam. It would be more helpful to at least put up some tin foil between the food and the styrofoam to help from all those carcinogens being potentially released due to the contact with the hot food. The food is good but I'm not sure I'd eat there again for takeout until they make some changes. I would've gladly paid an upcharge for healthier packaging. read more

I'd leave less stars if I could. I ordered my food as pickup. Was supposed to be finished in 55 min. I arrived 1 hour after placing my call. They took my payment and said my food was almost ready - be right out. I asked for an itemized receipt. Turns out they charged me for meat samosa when I ordered veggie. No big deal, I alerted the front staff about it and she told the kitchen. A WHOLE HOUR goes by and I'm still waiting for my food. The poor cashier at the front appears to be totally overwhelmed. Despite this, she was very sweet. THIS PLACE NEEDS MORE STAFF! When I finally get my order this is how it was: The kulcha tasted like it was made from pancake batter w not one onion in sight. Potato was undercooked chunks and barely visible. Flavorless soggy samosa What the curries lacked in masala they sure made up for with salt :( Additionally, when I asked to be refunded the price for the difference of the meat/veggie samosa, the employee reached for the tip bucket to refund me. I refused to take her tips. She sure earned them over the course of the evening as she apologized to multiple disgruntled customers! The food is average, some hits (lamb korma) and some misses (the veggie pakora, garlic naan). Unfortunately, everything takes forever. Whether that's getting a table, getting food, or even paying the bill. You have to try to get the servers attention and beg/remind them of things you ordered. The food is always super fresh and amazing. The owner speaks to the customers and they take pride in serving fresh made food. The wait is forever and it's usually quicker to order for take out but otherwise we have no complaints. If you're coming here expect a long wait and fresh food. It was my birthday yesterday and I wanted to try this place out. I love Indian food but didn't feel like driving to Providence, so this place made sense. Got there around five PM. There were no other people in the restaurant except for a woman getting take out. I went to the front desk and asked for a table for six. The man behind the counter told me they wouldn't be able to serve us until 6pm because they had a lot of takeout orders to fulfill and they were backed up. So he wanted us to come back in an hour. I'm unsure how this place has such high ratings... maybe because it's the only Indian restaurant of note around? I tried the lunch buffet here and couldn't believe how bland everything was. Almost nothing had any real spices. There wasn't even a very good variety. Admittedly, the price was great if there was actually some good food to accompany it. The spinach/saag tasted like creamed spinach and the chicken offerings, while cooked decently, had flavorless sauces on them so that I couldn't even tell them apart. I didn't even finish the "meatballs" (I don't know what they're called). The buffet was supposed to come with naan and I didn't even get any until after I was practically done eating. I feel bad for leaving one star because the food is amazing, but I have never been more flabbergasted by a restaurant owner in my life. I can't understand an owner standing awkwardly at your table for 10 minutes making guests feel supremely uncomfortable. Great Indian food Ayur-Shri is a great Indian restaurant in an unusual building. Very rustic looking, I couldn't quite figure out what it was in it's former life but it certainly works as well in it's present incarnation. Lots of room inside and cool pictures and decorations on the walls. When we went in Indian music was softly playing in the background. Enough to be heard and to be enjoyable but not loud enough to make conversation difficult. We were there for the lunch boofay and were very pleasantly surprised. Most boofays are adequate but certainly not memorable, but the food here was superb. I don't know enough about Indian food to understand the subtleties and why it was so good but just about every item in the boofay was among the best I've ever had. The service was efficient and pleasant and the entire building interesting. A great boofay that is worth going out of the way for. I have no idea if the food was "authentic" and it really doesn't matter. A remarkable and very tasty experience. read more

Ayur-Shri is located on Route 6 and there is plenty of parking behind the building. My girlfriend and I came here yesterday around 4 o'clock and saw only one car in the parking lot and a dimly lit building. A torrent of gauche questions raced through my mind: Did the hostess, waitress and chef all carpool? Is electricity now considered a luxury in America? Do Indians dine in darkness? I assumed they were closed. But upon opening the door, we were greeted by a kind woman and sat by the windows in the front. I was impressed by the cloth napkins and immediacy of service. I know; it doesn't take much. But more importantly, I was fixated on the pleasing smell of fresh spices and chutney. The restaurant has its own charcoal fueled tandoor oven and a decent selection of Indian beers - yeah, they keep it real. The building itself looks like a cousin to a mountain lodge - woody and rural appearing, but not quite rustic. A dining area on the second floor has a sloping roof featuring numerous skylights. Crossbeams dart across the expanse of the upper stairwell walls. Hindu and Indian artwork titivate the rooms. Free Naan-like chips w/chutney were brought promptly and consumed gleefully. A Kabab Platter appetizer (seekh, lamb boti and chicken tikka kabab with tandoori wings) offered what seemed to be the most diversified beginning plate. I cannot say any one part was better than the other; all were excellent in both texture and taste. If you are not clinically insane, you will order bread at Ayur-Shri. The Onion Kulcha (spicy and hot naan bread stuffed with onion) was a necessary addition to the delicious curries and at $3.00 an order, you can't go wrong. She ordered the Nepali Special Chicken Curry (extra spicy) and it arrived mixed with Ajwain, Nepali spices, spring onions and fresh tomatoes. The flavor in this dish cannot be understated. My Shrimp Saag (cooked with spinach and blended with green herbs) may have cost the Atlantic Ocean an entire school of shrimp. It was delicious in a very earthy green kind of way and when poured over the accompanying Himalayan Basmati rice, filled me entirely. But I couldn't let that stop me from trying dessert. Due to a gluttony easily scapegoated as indecision, we ordered two types. The Galab Jamun arrived first. It's a north Indian sweet made from essence of milk, deep-fried cheese and flour munchkins and soaked in honey syrups. It tastes exactly as it reads - get it, it makes you happy. The second to arrive was the Ras Malai, a dessert from the eastern part of India. Fresh cheese dipped in sweetened milk, topped with nuts. What can I say, I'm a cheese whore. I didn't notice any nuts (the 24 ounce brews go down fast with such spice) but I won't let that stop me from giving Ayur-Shri five stars. read more

I have had the pleasure of tasting a medley of Indian Cuisine in California and am humbled at the sheer brilliance of Ayur-Shri! Imagine walking into an Indian restaurant in New Delhi. Picture the native music filling the cozy establishment. Behold various paintings of life in India scattered about the walls. Marvel at the meticulous care given to every plate, bowl, table cloth and ambiance. That is my description of Ayur-Shri, which does not even give them justice. All three of my cousins (myself included) ordered the chicken tikka masala, which comes with a bowl of steaming basmati rice. They offer various degrees of spicy hot goodness for your masala. Keep in mind the medium level packed a fiery bite. To finish the order off, four garlic naans. Every bite was gratifying, I mean EVERY bite. All conversation stopped as we began to feast on ambrosial morsels of tandoori chicken, masala smothered pieces of naan, and the aromatically awesome rice. Throughout the feast, a kind waiter paid us a visit often and regularly. The staff were satisfyingly genuine and open to comments and suggestions to help their business grow. I stupidly have driven by this place because I wasn't quite sure how to get into the parking lot and I was getting tailgated by someone on Route 6. No more! We found the nice parking lot around back and had a truly amazing Sunday night dinner here. Delicious well-spiced food, an attentive and friendly server, and literally the best and freshest naan and lassis I have ever had (they make their own yogurt and bread on the premises). We were seated next to a couple who had never been out for Indian food before and the host graciously explained what dishes might be best for them after talking to them about their food preferences and dislikes. We had two types of naan and a variety of lamb and rice and chicken dishes all of which were flavorful and cooked to the spiciness that we ordered it. The inside of Ayur-Shri is well decorated and quiet even though it's right on the road. We had a comfortable booth and had the place nearly to ourselves for an early dinner on Sunday. Prices were reasonable. Service was fast. Pleasant music was playing. A great way to wind up a holiday weekend. read more

My husband and I went here for the first time recently. When arriving, we had to wait a few minutes for a table. Once seated, it took a very long time for our server to come by for our order. Service continued to be very slow throughout the evening. The food was excellent. We started with the paneer kati roll. It was quite large; perhaps next time I'd order that as a meal! I then ordered the mango vegetable curry and my husband got a chicken curry. Everything was bursting with flavor.
