OMG. Got lost today. I took a wrong exit and stumbled upon Pagoda Chinese restaurant. Best Chinese food I have ever eaten. Friendly staff, who listened to my spice request and got it just right. Clean organized restaurant. Staff wore gloves while preparing food and took off to tender payment. Excellent food. You have got to try it. This place is on my route to work, but I never stopped in because I couldn't see it from the street. Regardless, I knew it was back there somewhere so I decided to pull in one day to look around. Once parked, I was able to see the large sign pointing toward the restaurant and then I was able to find it easily. I called ahead to order my usual General Tso's tofu and Szechuan tofu. The food TASTED great but the tofu was definitely dried out and/or overcooked. It was almost to the point of being hard to chew. Not all of it, but definitely certain parts. I mean, the food was still really good and it wasn't that big of a deal, but it's hard to be super excited about a meal that was difficult to eat, even if the taste was pretty good. It was tough to decide between 3 and 4 stars but I had to go with 3 because I've given other places 4 stars, places whose food was just as good but not dried out or overcooked. I'll definitely be going back to Pagoda, we'll see how everything goes the next time. read more

Warning!! This review is a novel. I've been eating here for months so now I will give a review. The most decent general tsos near me. I found this place because I was looking specifically for a place that served good general tsos. the closest Chinese restaurants near me either serve super sweet general tsos or super hard, bone-grisle filled chicken general tsos. So yeah, found this place and enjoyed it the most despite the 20 minute drive from my home. The woman at the front has been friendly every time i've gone in. The food is ready fast So why 3 stars??- I don't think I've had a dish made so inconsistently every time I order it. The egg rolls? amazing. The hunan chicken? Really good but the general tsos?? The very thing I come here for?? It's like a gamble with how it's going to come out. Some days it's spicy with soft but tender chicken (so, the way it should be). Other days it's hard and sweet with very little flavor. not sure why this is or how it's so hit and miss but oh well. Will I continue coming here? It's cheap and it fills my fix for general tsos so yeah I will....until i find a better place at least. read more

To be fair, I have yet to eat here, but I did try to place a take out order online the first time I couldn't get the website to work, I tried setting up an account but it kept kicking me out. The second time I got all the way to the pay screen where a "suggested" tip was added along with a $1 conveniences fee. Then it told me I had to go inside to pay, how is that convenient or fee worthy? I do usually tip on takeout orders, but I like to decide that myself. I stopped in for a quick bite of takeout food here at Pagoda and had a terrible experience. The first issue was the initial call. They hung up on me three times before I finally got through. I was then rushed through my order and of course once I got back to my office it was wrong. I specifically asked for no pork in the rice and a spring roll. I guess it depends on what you order. Last time, I had Chicken with Garlic Sauce, which was delicious. This time, I ordered Chicken Lo Mein, Fried Rice and Chicken Teriyaki. Both the Lo Mein and Fried Rice were absolutely tasteless, and the Teriyaki had an odd after taste. I didn't want to add soy sauce (and a ton of sodium) to give it some flavor, so after one small helping of each, I threw the rest of the food away. I love this place! Friendly, fast delivery and delicious!! My go tos are Roast Pork n broccoli and Hunan chicken. Human not spicy enough, so I'll fix that next time. The pork is always tender. The food arrived nicely packaged in recyclable cardboard containers -- still hot aside from the 45 min delivery. Everything we got was delicious and fresh! Not worth it at all. I used to come here for the convenience of location but I am completely done with this place after finding a piece of metal in my food and them messing up my order completely. I called to see if I could get a refund on my order and the woman on the phone started yelling at me about how I'm lying and I probably ate everything when I literally couldn't because it was something that I don't eat. Ordered delivery from them, which was fine but the food was absolutely sub par. The sesame chicken was edible. I ordered crab cheese wontons and didn't get sweet and sour dipping sauce and the wontons weren't good at all. When they mess up your order they try to scheme you by saying "we will give you a credit next time you order" meaning they're not going to replace it and they next time you call and order and try to redeem your credit nobody in the restaurant knows about it which means they never was going to replace it to begin with so they're actions are basically saying "Better Luck Next Time" read more

I tried a lot of Chinese food restaurants when I moved to North Haven and this one is consistent and tasty. The big things I personally look for are good crab Rangoon, general tsao's and any general brown sauce like shrimp with broccoli. All of them are great, especially the sauce for the general Tsao's! The hot and sour soup is good, the wonton is a bit disappointing since it is only dumplings in chicken broth, I like when they add scallions and/or shreds of pork to the broth as well. My co-workers and I order from here frequently. It is a pretty standard menu. That being said, the food is pretty good. You can tell that they car about the quality of the food that they serve. Their lunch specials are great! I was shocked whjen I say all the food that I got for less than $5.00...yes less than $5.00 and that included an egg roll and a soup! I have been here several times before, and the food is okay, but they never have spare ribs on the bone, occasionally forget to include things in your order (like mu shoo pork with no pork, or no side order of rice), and now they sneakily add on an extra service charge without you knowing about it. I went to pick up my order, and was given the credit card receipt to sign. I then had to ask for the detail receipt. When she gave it to me there was a 25 cent SC at the end. I asked what that was. She told me costs went up, and they didn't want to raise prices. I can understand that, but there is nothing anywhere telling you that, so this is a very sneaky way to do business. I wouldn't mind paying more if I knew about it beforehand. It was only 25 cents, but it could just as easily have been $10. This is no way run a business. read more

The best generic Chinese take-out joint in the greater New Haven area bar none! The Food actually tastes good & even moderately healthy:) Don't go expecting gourmet quality , but for no-frills "Americanized" Chinese grub you can't go wrong with Pagoda. We've ordered the same thing from here every time we crave Chinese food for the last few years. Beef and broccoli, the house special lo mein and two egg rolls. Yesterday we got it again. Something has changed. The shrimp in the lo mein were clearly frozen cooked salad sized shrimp. They were soggy and the size of a nickel. Not the usually regular 4-5 large shrimp that it used to come with. The taste of the noodles was also off putting and there wasn't much pork or chicken either. The beef and broccoli was tasty but the portion was noticeably smaller although served in the same sized container as prior orders. The egg rolls were chewy and tough. What a shame. We will be looking for another take out place going forward. read more

The open view of the kitchen reveals a clean operation. My go-to meal is either the Triple Delight or the Happy Family - both made with first rate ingredients with the shrimp in particular - large size with no iodine odor; great fresh vegetables with a nicely seasoned sauce that doesn't drown or overpower the dish. read more
