I pass by this place frequently and always wanted to give it a try. I really wanted to love this place as the decor was on point, but unfortunately the food was not. I tried four items. The pecan cookie, the chocolate eclair, the cake pop, and the carrot cake. Of these items, the cookie was the best. However, for $2.50 I expected more. It was nothing more then an over-sized Mexican wedding cookie. The cake pop was mediocre, but I did like the outer shell. The eclair was very stale and had a "gummy" filling. The carrot cake was dry and tasted like it was a week old. I would have given this place a single star, but the decor and service moved it up one notch. This is a difficult review to write, because I think that there may be a little bit of a disconnect between their wedding and party cakes, and their regular retail. I had a friend give me a gift certificate so that I could try Azucar. I was excited about that, as I had been reading some reviews and had been checking out their website. First off, Azucar is easy to find and has plenty of parking. The shop is small, and the pre-made selections are not too numerous. They were sampling their dulce de leche napoleon, and it was quite good. I needed a cake for the Beautiful Ms. D's birthday, and they only had two on offer. The gentleman who was working, told me that both would be $25 and then explained what they were. I selected the flan cake, which was a layer of dense chocolate cake, a layer of flan, and a layer of dulce de leche with some icing embellishments along the edges. They were able to write Happy Birthday on the top. When he rang it up, he told me that it was $35. I pointed out that he had told me that it was $25 just moments before. He said that he had made a mistake, and that it was $35, since it was their flan cake. I told him that I was not pleased about that mistake, and he immediately said that he would sell it for $25. Service and communications could have been better. The cake itself was very good. It was not exceptional or excellent, but very good. Then again, I like the cakes from Whole Foods, too, and those tend to be less than $25 or $35. The cake was moist and dense, the flan was wonderful and also dense and the dulce de leche was delicious. While waiting for the cake to get boxed, my son and I looked at their books of wedding and event cake photos. I can see why Azucar is so popular for their larger-scale projects. I am just not sure about making this a regular stop on my dessert rotation. I am not sure that they are as into the retail trade. read more

Our desserts were a hit with our guests and the edible screen print images on the cookies turned out great. I used Azucar Bakery for the cake for my sister's baby shower this past weekend. I already had an idea of what kind of decorations I wanted on the cake, and Azucar replicated them exactly. The cake was as expected, and ready on time. It was also absolutely delicious, and the shower guests raved about it all afternoon. I chose the poppy seed cake with whip cream filling, and the bakery dyed the cake light blue to go with the shower theme. It looked great, and the frosting was soooo good! Not too sweet, and nice and light. I will definitely use Azucar again in the future, and recommend their services for any special occasion! read more

Smallish but delicious, decadent cake choices (ah, those amazing dulche de leche fillings....) and our Americanos were very good. We'd wanted to go in to this bakery for a while and finally did to pick up something sweet for my birthday. It was close to closing time and the woman who helped us did everything she could to make sure we got what we wanted. We left with a dulche de leche napoleon, a piece of pineapple up-side down cake and a piece of raspberry white chocolate cake. Everything was delicious! The up-side down cake was one of the best I've ever had. They also do beautiful work on special occasion cakes. I can't wait to go back and try an empanada. Hands down the BEST bakery in Denver. I've ordered 3 cakes from here and they never disappoint. All 3 times, I emailed them with pictures that I want them to be and every time, it came out amazing. Now for the flavors. I've had their famous dark chocolate, marble with cream filling, and the almond one. They were all good. I have bought cakes from azucar since marjorie ( the owner) used to bake in her little apartment and let me tell you that her cakes are still as amazingly delicious as then!! I got my wedding cake here and I'm already dreaming of my first anniversary cake (that we will get for free!)!! If we lived nearby (i.e. in the same state), I would likely get very fat from going here way to often. Marjorie was wonderful, very nice and helpful, and tolerant of my crazy bride tendencies (changing the design, changing it back, etc.). The pricing seemed very reasonable. Their designs were more updated and cakes better than another bakery we tried. We ended up going simple on the design (and complementing it with flowers) and it turned out beautifully. We chose chocolate/nutella filling, Peruvian yellow/dolce de leche filling, and red velvet/cream cheese filling as our three layers and I ate an insane amount of all 3 flavors. I'm a chocolate girl all the way so I expected to go for the chocolate as my favorite but I think the Peruvian cake layer may have been the best (I'm shocked, seriously what could be better than chocolate?). read more

I ordered two cakes for my daughters bridal shower. One glutted free and one regular. They both tasted fabulous. They were both decorated exactly to my specifications. This place surpassed my expectations! I visited their website and saw that they can be contacted online. I needed to order a cake but had no time to come in. I emailed them and they were able to accept my order. I then called to pay ahead of time. The cake they made from my email was perfect. While I am not a fan of whipped cream frosting that is what my husband wanted it was for his college graduation. While I wish there was more fruit in the filling everything else was perfect. The white cake was moist and delicious and the frosting was surpisingly good for whipped cream even though I am not a fan. I cannot wait to get a cake from here with buttercream frosting as some of the decorations were made out of it and it was delicious. Update: We picked up our custom cake last week and it was everything we had hoped for! The almond cake was delicious - light and held together very well, the raspberry filling tasted fresh and not too sweet, and the chocolate icing tasted great - fresh and lighter than most buttercreams, which is how I prefer it. I recommend this bakery, in general, but absolutely for Wedding Cakes. Our son and beautiful bride, love offroading and wanted a unique cake that included a Ford pickup truck. This cake was amazing. The details in the truck were incredible. The "mud" was realistic, but tasted even better than it looked. The Baker delivered and setup the cake on site with no issues whatsoever. Ordered and paid for a cake online for my daughters bday ( first mistake ) very easy process and very specific for what you want . When we arrived for pickup it was plain white without the trim color I picked. Older man that brought it out acted put out that it wasn't right and said they could throw sprinkles on it ?? I said no we just want the trim color specified on the order . He went to fix it and still had an attitude when he brought it back and explained next time to write out online in the instructions as if it was my fault he didn't follow the cake order instructions . I first discovered this place when I was searching for a bakery to order a birthday cake for one of my coworkers. I looked at a couple of different bakeries on Yelp, but ultimately chose Azucar and boy am I happy I did! The cake was a last minute thing (leave it to men to tell me I needed the cake last minute) and the bakery had NO problem accommodating me. No one mentioned that it's like this bright and sunny bakery that would be adorable for sitting in and relaxing. Then, the service, wow again. They are so nice and helpful! The woman helping us offered to let us try the Peruvian cake that I was interested in and came back with a whole tasting plate of thin slices of several cakes. Everything was amazing. We went with the Peruvian cake after all, and selected from the many options for icing, sizes, shapes, etc. And, it wasn't even all that expensive to order. Growing up, my friend's mom from Peru used to make alfajores for us all the time. They are probably my favorite cookie ever. I have never seen authentic alfajores at a bakery in Denver until I tried azucar. The cookies are buttery and melt in your mouth with a ridiculous dulce de leche crime center. I would recommend the mini ones as they are the perfect size with out being too sweet. I have been back a few times to try other pastries and everything I have gotten has been flipping fabulous. They always have beautiful wedding and event cakes as well. If you are on Broadway, you need to check this place out. Look for the bright pink building. They have a small parking lot on the north side of the building that can hold a few cars and there is also free street parking. read more

Azucar Bakery was wonderful. From the tasting- to the wedding everything went smoothly. At the tasting they offered us about 6 or 8 different flavors, I can't recall for sure. But they were all delicious, made for a hard decision! We ended up choosing 3 flavors (1 for each tier) We did the traditional white cake with cream cheese filling, red velvet with cream cheese filling, and the double chocolate chip which was my very favorite! Unfortunately I was so busy at the wedding, I didn't get to eat ANY of the cake :( I am sure looking forward to the free anniversary cake they offer. Azucar was on time for set up and delivery.
