This was my first time at any Azul location, and I'd definitely recommend it if you're looking for great Mexican food. Our group called about 15 minutes in advance, and they were able to accommodate us quickly and attentively, even with the restaurant being fairly busy. Even though the restaurant was pretty busy, our group could easily hear one another. The restaurant was decorated nicely for Halloween. Our table enjoyed all of our meals, and the service was quick and timely. The only thing I would change is more meat instead of onions in the burrito. Ample parking with several business. There. We had mediocre welcome by the hostess. Rustic inside seating; outside seating as well. Waiter was ok but not as ingratiating as most are. The salsa and chips were ok. Not enough salt on the chips. The salsa was nicely substantial, but very bland. We ordered the traditional margaritas with ice and salted rims. You could taste the tequila, but they used the premix and it was very diluted. The drink tasted like lemon flavored water with liquor. I got the street tacos and she ordered the Azul bowl. Mine had great mixture of well prepared meat, but without the added hot sauce, pretty bland. On singular tacos; they only captured it one shell. Had to eat them with a knife and fork; impossible to pick them up without disintegrating. Most place use two or more shell preventing this from happening. The Azul bowl was a mix of beans, rice, corn, steak, avocado and a drizzle of sour cream. Overall, it too, was very bland. The highlight was the refried beans, but almost cold when they arrived. The cost we thought were high compared to comparable places. This is kind of a run of the mill place, but you can find better, even here on James Island. I can't see returning. read more

My Family first tried the North Charleston location a few months back, and as non meat or dairy consumers, we were pleasantly surprised at the variety that Azul Mexicano had to offer. As a lover of Mexican food that is authentic, I definitely recommend this place for food, service, and atmosphere. The next location was James island which was even better! Our server greeted us with a smile every time that she approached and made sure to check on us often. Although the music was quite loud inside(even in the restroom) we had the option of eating outside on a beautiful day. This place is just not good, it's not worth going. With so many locations some of them have to be producing a decent product or else they wouldn't be in business. Another return trip to Azul, which did not turn out too well as we went into the very crowded restaurant and stood for quite a number of minutes at the front to be checked in and had to wait and wait. Finally we were seated. Soon our server Migo, a very charming, smiling and efficient server whose requested suggestions were quite tasty. The chips were placed on the table and my wife ordered guacamole dip ($6.75) her favorite with chips. I had the quesaldilla fajita plate ($15.25)with my selected steak filler all of which was really a tasty selection, which also had melted cheese, onions and green peppers caramelized down. Really like this place! We typically prefer to sit at the bar - lots of room and quick service. Very big menu that can accommodate pretty much anyone. My favorite dish so far has been the molcajete - it is a little pricey so certainly not something I'm personally ordering every time, but it's a great dish to get occasionally (and it's plenty large enough to share!) The street tacos are always 10/10 each time, as well - so that's also a very safe option to order. As a side note, I LOVE all things spicy... the spicier, the better. I've been to this location 3 or 4 times, and always have had a great experience! I'll never turn down free chips and salsa, which is what every meal starts with here. Let me start by saying there's a reason why we go to Señor Tequila in West Ashley. The salsa at Azul is very tomato pasty and had the taste of tomato paste. The habanero dip is very good, spicy and hot. I ordered three street tacos and they were good. Nothing special. The thing that really provides a two is when I ordered a frozen classic margarita, they provided me a frozen margarita that taste like cucumber. I returned it and they gave me another frozen margarita. It did not taste good. I didn't think I needed to tell her to take the $10 margarita cost off my bill. I was still charged for the poor tasting margarita. I chucked that up to the poor bartender and the server who didn't even take it off my bill. I almost selected did not give her a tip. But I still gave her a small tip. We will not be going back here for at least another year or so. read more

Though I'd visited the Park Circle location I'd never been to the Charleston/James Island location. Upon arrival we were greeted promptly and shown to a table. We ordered the Shrimp Burrito and the Enchiladas Poblanas with a side of refried beans. My burrito was a decent size, and I really enjoyed the flame grilled taste of the shrimp. The tortilla shell was bland, I wished that I would have ordered it fried, like a chimichanga so that it would have had some crunch, texture or added flavor. The guacamole salad was good, however I wish there would have been a bit more guacamole on the salad. When it comes to service, there were a couple of times that I wished the waiter would have checked in on us, because I actually needed or wanted something but he seemed to be assisting other patrons, or out of site. Service was just ok overall. Both meals were a decent size portion wise and we thought it was pretty good but overall it was just average. It wasn't the best Mexican food that I've had but it also wasn't the worst. I had a mango margarita along with my meal and it was good. We enjoyed our dinner at Azul tonight! The restaurant is open and bright. They have ample outdoor and indoor seating. We decided to eat inside and we were seated quickly. They brought us chips and salsa (a salsa container per person). It was refreshing to get complimentary chips and salsa as so many restaurants charge for chips and salsa now. We both ordered the Burritos Mexicanos. They were delicious. They were probably heavier than I needed, but they were good. The chicken, onions and peppers were cooked perfectly. Great place for families or social gatherings. We went to the newer suburban location, very spacious and classy decor, easy to park. It's mainly a family business and I think the owner was mostly serving us as it was pretty busy so he was helping out. Not perfect English but a perfect gentleman and extremely accommodating. My family is picky (I'm not) so we actually sent a couple of side dishes back due to cheese or onions being there when it didn't say that on the menu. Which was handled with speed and grace. Speaking of the menu it's huge. They must have like fifty things on there. Sometimes that's a bad sign but not here. Their range is so broad that my son found 'gringo tacos' with just ground beef, cheese and lettuce (exactly what I make for him at home) while I found Chile Colorado, a specialty dish I've never had before. Stopped in on my way home from the beach with a couple friends. We were really craving a frozen margarita, unfortunately the machine was broken. We decided to settle for one on the rocks. It was an okay margarita, nothing to write home about. It was well priced, $8.50, and really big. The restaurant decorated nicely, super hip with a modern Mexican design. The bar was super large and there was tons of seating indoor and outdoor. The highlight of our experience was the girl behind the bar. She was super personable and funny. She definitely made the experience more enjoyable. She brought us out chips and gave all 3 of us individual salsa bowls, which I found to be a nice touch. He got all of our orders correct and handled some really hot plates for us with his bare hands! He was very friendly and I think the manager checked in on us a couple times as well. Our food came out REALLY fast and was hot. Overall, very good service. Atmosphere- super cutely decorated restaurant! Definitely cantina themed and lots of indoor and outdoor seating. They have booths, tables, a bar, and can definitely host big groups. Good music and good vibes all around. Food- good food but nothing outstanding. And even ordering at the tail end of their order window around 9:25 pm, my food was great! I got the steak Quesadilla Fajita. I also opted for cheese sauce on top. Azul's new parking validation system is not only a pain but you have to up front commit to paying $$$ for parking there for a specific amount of time and then remember to get it validated within that amount of time... if you don't, well, then your card is charged. Great outdoor patio with seating and umbrellas. My go to order is the Azul veggie bowl. Some restaurants really fail with their veggie items, but man this veggie bowl is DELICIOUS. I've ordered it at least 5 times and it is consistently excellent. Rice, black beans, corn, onion, bell pepper, zucchini, carrot, avocado, broccoli, cauliflower, with a little sprinkled cheese and sour cream sauce. Even if you're not a vegetarian you HAVE to try this! So good! Their chips/salsa/queso is good. My son loves the kid's pizza, plenty of side choices including carrots and broccoli. No thanks. Came in for dinner on a Thursday evening at 845 - called first to make sure they were still serving. We walked in, and the first booth was filled with staff eating. This became a big factor in our dining experience since our server was eating the entire time, we were waiting to place orders, get help, and waiting to order cocktails which never happened. They were several tables of people eating and drinking and a number of people at the bar so it's not like we were closing down the joint. At the same time not overly busy so definitely not in the weeds. We had to ask multiple times for water, chips, and walk around the restaurant looking for help. Queso was delivered completely cold. Cleaning staff were walking around and we asked them for help and they let us know that they weren't our server. Ultimately, the waitress took the queso, after we found her eating at the family meal, and she brought it out with her fingers in it and curdled film on top. It seems like several of our items hit the microwave. Guac was brown- definitely not freshly prepared. While we were eating, someone started using the leaf blower to clean tables around us. Happy hour from 4-7 is $1 off domestic (nonlocal) drafts, house margaritas, & Tecate A large menu which I feel is a sign that nothing is done very well.
