We come after dance class on Tuesdays because my daughter lives the tacos and my son gets the kids queso. The first two weeks we did this we got just okay service. Tonight we had Piper and she was great. It really makes all the difference in how enjoyable a night is...

I was reluctant to leave a review here because I came here for a Wine and Food event with a tasting menu but I truly believe that even after eating from this menu that their food from the regular menu has to be just as good! Every course was packed with flavor, texture and enjoyed it with a margarita! The atmosphere was vibrant and fun and I definitely want to come back and try their regular menu food. Big shout out to their amazing staff,Morgan and G4 tequila for putting this together!

Next time, I may lessen my tip if I'm going to get some fee.

The food is usually good, but beware the shrimp: I ordered a banging shrimp, and the shrimp were rotten (tasted like chlorine). Also, watch out for a secret "surcharge fee". See the attached photo. Even though we spent over $100 for just two people, we got charged the fee.

I had the Bangin' Shrimp Tacos, Chips and Salsa, & a Pineapple flavored beer! The inside of this little restaurant has such a cool vibe. The Bangin' Shrimp tacos had a delicious sauce that was drizzled on top - spectacular! I could eat these tacos every day! Our waitress was really bubbly and gave us great service, including a sample of the beer that I bought to make sure that I liked it before I committed to the big glass!

I've been here twice and while the service is always stellar, the food has been hit or miss. The first time I came here, I ordered the fajitas. Absolutely amazing, definitely get this if you come here. Second time I ordered the nachos mama with ground beef and it was not that great. The queso seemed to be put on the bottom so when it hardened, it just stuck to the parchment and I had to scrape it off. Toppings were scarce as well if you look my my picture. I go crazy for nachos but these are at the bottom of my list of nachos I've had sadly. Also ordered a pineapple mockarita which was tasty. Will stick to fajitas next time!

Food is good. Pricing is typical for Charleston. The water has an off taste, so you're better off ordering a tea or soda. $1 wings all day on Saturday and Sunday is advertised but we were told it's actually only during happy hour. Not really a fan of that.

This place is a must. The house margarita was great and the nachos were really delicious. They use a liquid cheese which I wasn't expecting but it really works. We also added beef to the nachos which was great. Vibes in here are beach coastal and it's honestly a mood. They also advertised a Taylor Swift themed drink which was cool being a swiftie myself.

Great service, lively atmosphere, and great deals for happy hour. The fall specials are really appealing and experience is always consistent. Nachos are next level!

Ordered takeout from here and was very disappointed. First of all, the portion sizes were abysmal. The picture is a picture of the fajita with beef that costs $24. The mexi-cali burrito that we ordered was not much better and was barely half the size of the photo and costed another $20. The taste of the food was nothing special either. The flavor was dull and the beans tasted like they had been frozen. Overall a complete waste of money. There are numerous Mexican food options in Charleston that are way better than this location.

First time to Charleston, first time to Mex1, first impression was a delight. Taco Tuesday!!!! The atmosphere is active. TVs throughout for viewing various events. Full bar. Outdoor seating optional. Waitress was pleasant and knowledgeable of menu. During the day, family friendly. At night, trivia night Tuesdays and I'm sure other lively activities on other nights of the week. The MexiCali Burrito! Everything rolled up in that, yes, even the french fries! Cheese, yes! Get this again, YES!! First time to Charleston or back again, stop by Mex1 for your Taco Tuesday or any day Mexican food cravings.

It's not my favorite type of Mexican restaurant, as it's a little more upscale than I *personally* prefer, but if upscale Mexican is your vibe, then this'll be the perfect restaurant for you! They had an alright selection of beers, to include a couple of IPAs, but my friends and I didn't really enjoy their cocktails. They were expensive, but lacking in much flavor or zest. Besides looking cool, the taste didn't really match the aesthetic. Furthermore, the food was solid, but not that much better than your basic Mexican restaurant. As for the service, our waiter was nice enough, but he always seemed to be in a hurry, and was walking away while we were still trying to give our order. All-in-all, I'm probably making Matador sound worse than it was, but it was merely a slightly above-average Mexican experience, not a transcendental dining experience that I'll never forget. I'll give it 3/5 stars, and would recommend it based on your personal preference.

The experience got off to a poor start at the door. The doorman handed out 21+ wristbands without even checking IDs, which didn't inspire much confidence. Once inside, the restaurant was uncomfortably hot because the air conditioning either wasn't working or wasn't keeping up. It made watching the game pretty miserable. We also had an issue with seating. The owner refused to seat us until at least 50% of our group had arrived, despite there being more than eight empty tables available throughout the restaurant. The policy seemed unnecessary given how many open tables there were. For a sports bar, the TV setup was surprisingly bad. None of the TVs were synchronized--one was live, another was about 20 seconds behind, another was nearly 45 seconds behind, and the audio didn't match any of them. Every big play was spoiled by people cheering from another part of the restaurant before we even saw it happen. The food was mediocre at best. I ordered the steak, chicken, and shrimp tacos. The steak and chicken were both dry enough that I had to drench them in salsa just to make them enjoyable. Later, a friend arrived and pulled up an empty chair to join us. The owner immediately told us we had to move because the chair was supposedly blocking the aisle for his staff. Normally I'd understand that, but there were four empty tables surrounding us, so there were plenty of other options that could have been handled more professionally. I've been here before for Tuesday night trivia, but after this experience I can confidently say I won't be coming back. If you're on King Street, there are plenty of restaurants and bars that offer better food, better service, and a much better atmosphere. If you're visiting Charleston, I'd recommend skipping El Jefe and spending your time and money somewhere else.

The process is a bit confusing as far as grabbing a menu then ordering at the counter then they bring your food, so we decided to sit at the bar where it's full service. The bartender was amazing. She had recommendations and let me try a drink before fully committing. We ordered the Golden Hour fries with yum yum sauce (amazing), the crab rangoons, pulled pork noodles and red beans and rice with chicken. The crab rangoons are not what you think of for traditional rangoos. They're actually hush puppies with a crab dip. The hush puppies are incredible and we just spooned the dip on top. Different but delightful. The pulled pork noodle bowl was a bit of a let down. It truly was just a heap of noodles and some pork. The pork was really really good, but I was surprised the noodles had no flavor and overwhelmed the bowl. The red beans and chicken had much more flavor, it was bone in chicken however the flavor was really nice. The drink menu is thoughtfully curated and crafted with some really unique options. We tried a highball and a frozen drink and both were really tasty. Next time I think I will order a BBQ plate so I can have more of the actual meat because it was really good, but I'm glad I tried something a little different.
