By far one of the worst Mexican restaurants in Mount Pleasant. They literally gave my son two small spoons of rice and charge me almost $14 for the plate and on top of it he had shrimp and half the shrimp had the poop still in it fully cooked then on top of that my plate was a quarter of a portion and I was charged damn near $30 for the plate would highly recommend not to eat there. It looks like half the food there is probably old and reused every day. read more

I used to live in Mt Pleasant decades ago so now that I'm back I have no clue where anything is at nor what is available. After searching on Google for terms like "Tex-mex Mt Pleasant" then consulting Yelp (selfless advertising there) I settled on Rio Chico. Located off of Long Point road in a very safe and cozy part of town Rio Chico has plenty of parking in a tucked away little town center area. Outside the facility is a typical run-of-the-mill restaurant façade however once the doors swing open, a bit of "flair and flavor" hits the senses. I lived in Austin TX for 4 years and would frequent San Antonio so I can say Rico Chico nailed the Latino influence on many levels, but not all. The floor and walls have that stuck-O color and feel, rod iron accents and large windows give the impression of the open-air theme with curved brick tiles acting as shingles drives home the point of a south Texas or Mexican experience. To finish up my first impression the dark wooden table and chairs along with booths are new while small accents such as a de la Muerte manakin give a very authentic "lived-in" vibe if you will. The servers are extremely nice and quick to seat the customers in places that have visibility to large TVs. My date was running late, which at a Mexican restaurant is a good thing as it gave me time to devour some chips and salsa. As a side note, I was on time, coming from Summerville while she was late living in Mt Pleasant; women! The chips were slightly burnt to me, a point my date didn't fully agree with but I maintain my opinion. The salsa was spot on - chunky, full of flavor with a slight pinch of heat but not making it impossible to eat. The server had good timing, allowing us to hang out yet making sure our beverages, in this case wine, were optimally filled. As for the beverages I'm not a tequila person, neither was my date, but a bourbon and/or wine person. The choices are sparse for the latter with bottom shelf selections but I realize the offerings are based on the setting so I'm fine with that. As for the menu there are lots of items to choose from and while I debated street tacos (a no win here as I just moved from the capital of tacos) so I went "full on flautas." I loved the shredded lettuce b/c it's what I envision as the perfect style when I eat Tex-mex. Huge dollops of sour cream are piled on with a very tame but lime drowned guac. Now I was supremely disappointed with the flautas. First, they were extremely wide as if their previous life was that of a chimichanga. Every where else I've had them, they're like cigars long, thin and crispy; crumbling to eat bite like a tortilla chip. Next the chicken had exactly zero flavor which is to say, no seasoning at all; no cumin, cilantro, chili pepper, salt, pepper nothing. In essence an almost soggy flavorless shredded chicken abomination; a Franken-flat-lupa if you will. As for my date she ordered the Arroz con Pollo. This dish was a stark contrast to mine and I'll reflect in the opposite of my lunch starting with my only gripe, the rice wasn't cooked in lard. This meant less flavor (in the rice itself) and texture. That said the rice "dish" did have good flavor with nice small veggies in it like tomato and peppers. Besides the once again great accompaniment of perfectly shredded lettuce, lime drowned guac and sour cream; the chicken simply put was outstanding. Long slices of succulent and tender chicken topped the rice. Every bite of juicy chicken burst with authentic Mexican flavor - like a fiesta in my mouth. Whomever cooked this dish - you NAILED it! I don't dig on beans so I can't speak on them but my overzealous female companion enjoyed copious amounts implying my air freshener might have a real job on its hands later, joking aside this was a phenomenal dish. Overall, my experience at Rico Chico, a chain restaurant was enjoyable with some menu items exceeding and others disappointing me. I was there at a slower time of day, that being Saturday 1-6 and never once was rushed, however I left before the night crowd began to file in. The servers are nice and respectful and most of the food is good. While I have heard other opinions of Rico's, I'm not going to comment on their experience, rather just what I can attest to. With that said, it seems like a hit or miss place with being a hit more often. To finish up, if you're close and in the mood, Rico Chico's is the restaurant for you. Stop on by! read more

This is one of my favorite no frills, quick service Mexican spots nearby. The food is always delivered fresh, hot & ready in no time! The chips are perfectly fried and the salsa is on point! Also... The Aquas Fresca! All of them hit the quenched thirst with a nice hint of flavor. My standard go-to is the ACP with grilled onions and cheese over a chicken breast with rice. Just a solid standard. Wow... this place was interesting. The main issue was our waiter. Our waiter was an absolute douche. Whenever we asked him a question or gave him our order, he didn't acknowledge us. It was probably the most awkward interaction I've ever had at a restaurant. We were left guessing whether what we asked him actually went through. What an a-hole To make matters worse, he didn't actually take our orders. He stood at the computer system in the corner of the restaurant and had us go around the table and yell our orders to him while he typed them in 20 ft away. What a joke. Have never seen that before. My friend liked this place so we came for dinner. Not gonna lie was not impressed. The menu was extensive. But service lacking and the food needed something in the way of seasoning. The margs however were great and generous in size. But not large enough for me NOT to notice they a) got my friend's order wrong b) never brought us more salsa when we asked c) charged us incorrectly. We totaled $57 between the two of us and asked to split the check, when they came back we saw they charged both of us $57! They fixed it right away of course and it was all fine but it just did not help matters. I got the fajitas and they were tasteless, the steak overdone to the point it was crispy. The veggies also tasteless. My husband got a fajita burrito and it just wasn't good. There are other Mexican places out there. read more

"That was a horrible dinning experience" We were aware of what we we're walking into. We have been here before and loved it, but tonight, woof... my boyfriend and I ordered food and in 10 mins or came out. His was perfect, mine was a completely different menu Item. They brought back a second dish, also not what I ordered. Third times the charm, we hoped. After an hour I got my order, but I'm allergic to mushrooms, which I specifically told them. When my correct meal came out it had mushrooms. I immediately got sick. We called the manager over and he said "well if you're actually sick I'll call you an ambulance". Biggest slap on the face... Sometimes you just want some cheap run-of-the-mill Mexican food. After leaving Target near IOP I was disappointed to see that Los Arcos was closed. It was a holiday so I called Rio Chico to make sure they had regular hours and headed over to long point. I'd been before, but it had been years so I didn't really have any expectations going in. It was pretty quiet in there but it was a Monday night so that's not unusual. The menu is huge... honestly it's too big. There's no need for that many items and combinations. It would take an hour to read all of the options. Eventually, you just end up pointing and picking as it's pretty overwhelming. I noticed they had an authentic section that I'd be interested to try, but that's for another day. I ordered the queso with ground beef as an appetizer and a mix of enchiladas. My server asked me about the queso multiple times and I clarified that I wanted the one with beef. He still brought out the plain queso and had to correct it afterwards. Once it arrived, it was pretty tasty, but it's queso so it pretty much has to be. The enchiladas were fine but nothing over the top. They definitely did the job. Then we waited. We waited, and waited... looking for our waiter to flag him down. I saw a couple workers go in and out of the kitchen and never our server. Eventually, I stood up and went looking for him. I found him sitting down with three other coworkers eating dinner. He saw me looking for him and immediately popped up from the table to attend to our table. He then showed up to see if we needed anything as if he hadn't just ignored our table for a half hour and ate dinner with his coworkers. I am very disappointed at the fact that I spent $30 and I didn't like my food. I ordered the grilled tacos. I got carnitas and the lengua. My plate came to the table and it looked so appetizing but it had no flavor, at all. The only thing I could taste was the corn tortilla they were on. My husband ordered the pollo con crema, it looked like a mess but I was hopeful the taste would be there. He could barely find any chicken in it and it just tasted like sour cream. He picked some pieces of chicken out of the crema and ate it with some chips. He barely ate anything on his plate. Had the Caldo de Pollo/Chicken Soup for a late lunch. It was very tasty and just what I needed on a cold day. I was really impressed with their chips and salsa. Chips were warm and fresh when brought to the table. I asked for mild salsa bcz my wimpy palate cannot tolerate any level of heat. They obliged and it was very tasty. Requested the soap minus rice (yep, I'm a southerner that doesn't love rice) and again, they obliged. The chicken was plentiful and tasty, with chunks of vegetables. Couldn't finish it all due to my live affair with chips and salsa, so I took the remainder to go. My server offered me a to go box for the remainder of the chips, ahhhhhhh YES!!! If this were Texas, I would still give a very good review for this place. Easily the best Mexican place I have eaten at in the South. It's difficult to find anything resembling authentic Mexican food outside of Mexico or the Western US, so we were skeptical of this place, even with the mixed reviews but it was my daughter's birthday and she really wanted Mexican food. I am so glad she did! Excellent, fresh, filling and flavorful food with fantastic service! The Asada Burrito is muey bueno! The beef is tender and the dish has a slight kick to it. The flautas are good, but nothing to write home about. I would certainly eat them if someone in the group wanted them. The Carne Asada is tender and the onion gave it an added boost. My wife added avocado slices, which was absolutely the right thing to do. I certainly liked the unsweetened iced tea, but my wife ordered the margarita on the rocks and I wish I would've too. They don't skimp on the alcohol. This place is excellent! read more

This is the 2nd time eating here. Great Mexican place. Walked in and got sat right away. A waitress was at our table in less than 2 mins to get our drink order. We both ordered rice, grilled chicken, chorizo, mushrooms and cheese sauce. While you wait, they bring you chips and salsa, I am not a big fan of fire roasted salsa, which is the kind they bring to the table, so I let the boyfriend have control of the chips and salsa. The food couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes to arrive. It was really good. The chorizo was very tasty and spicy and mixed with the chicken and cheese well. First things first: ALERT! There is *peanut butter* in the ground meat! That fact is not on the menu, and that is a potentially deadly omission for many people, including my son! For that reason, among others, I doubt that we'll be going back there. Fortunately, my son did not order anything with ground meat, but I did and tasted the peanut butter immediately. Its presence was confirmed by our waiter, who was very nice and promised to speak to the owner about including that information on the menu. I'm a Texan, and I prefer Tex Mex, which this food is not. However, the tortilla chips, salsa and guacamole were tasty, so I had hope. Unfortunately, my food was barely warm, I needed a magnifying glass to find meat in the tamale, both the tamale and enchilada were extremely salty, the noticeable peanut butter flavor of the ground meat in the taco was weird and unnerving, and the refried beans were runny. Our meal was $30, and was definitely not worth the price. This makes me sad because I'm still in search of really good Mexican food in Charleston after 30 years! read more
