The grouper fish tacos were absolute perfection, featuring flaky fish with a light crisp texture and bright, balanced flavors that let the quality of the grouper shine. Every element worked together beautifully without overpowering the dish. The guacamole was exactly what great guacamole should be, creamy with just the right amount of texture, perfectly ripe avocados, fresh lime, and balanced seasoning that made it hard to stop eating. The Spanish rice, tomatillo sauce, and pinto beans were all equally delicious and clearly made with care and attention to flavor. We sat at the bar and really enjoyed chatting with our friendly and enthusiastic bartender, which made the experience even more memorable. Service, atmosphere, and food were all outstanding. We absolutely love Lewis BBQ and didn't feel like fighting Charleston traffic and parking on a Saturday night, but this was a miss. While the queso and the meat were good (not much of it though), everything else left a lot to be desired. The sauces were not good and kind of ruined the food for me. I'm surprised by how unimpressed we were. It's certainly not awful but wasn't worth $70 for two dinners (no alcohol). I don't recommend it and don't think we'll be back, unfortunately. read more

As a sister restaurant to Lewis Barbecue--one of our top five favorites in Charleston--we were excited to give it a try. We were welcomed with a complimentary trio of salsas and chips before our meal, which was a nice touch. The waiter was exceptionally friendly, even chatting with us about Luna and dogs in general--always a favorite topic of mine. The menu is fairly small, but offers a solid selection of dishes. This is our fourth visit in 4 years. It had fallen off from its first year, so we just hadn't been back. Well, we gave it another go and are so glad we did! Our Queso Asado was fantastic. It had that thick consistency fundito is known for. I had the lunch portion of steak fajitas. The steak was tender and the smoked flavor was just right. Everyone else in our party of four had brisket enchiladas. The brisket was of course so tender and flavorful. Their salsa verde is fantastic too. Had to try rancho Lewis this weekend !!! They have a great menu selection. The outdoor patio is ideal and right next to an open area, so very family friendly. It's a little ways from the downtown area but worth the drive. We ordered the brisket enchiladas, fajitas, and street tacos. I would love to visit again. The free salsa bar with three different options is an awesome touch, and the chile con queso was absolutely delicious. We are a house divided on this spot. Overall, I am happy to say that it is fine. Really fine. I have never been displeased with a cocktail or with the cuisine. The service is always super. For me, nothing really stands out. I never leave saying I have to go back and have that drink or that food item. My husband, however, loves the cocktails, especially the happy hour menu, and loves the food and so do a couple of our good friends. The setting is nice and the happy hour prices are affordable. As I said, I have no real complaints, just nothing sets this a part from other places that I visit. Whether you are a local or new to town, give it a try and make your own decision. read more

Try this place! We loved eating here. First of all, the inside is beautifully decorated. We love the southwest ranch theming-- it reminded me of my time in New Mexico and southern Colorado. The lighting is great, really setting the ambience in there. The service was also attentive. Our waiter was very sweet and was on his game the whole time we were there. They have a salsa bar and every sauce we tried was delicious. Their homemade chips are also great. It's a scratch kitchen! We ordered queso for the table and my husband and I got an old fashioned and a Margarita, respectively. Both were well balanced. His old fashioned in particular had a delicious, Smokey taste to it For entrees, my husband ordered the smoked brisket enchiladas and I ordered chicken enchiladas verdes. The latter was our favorite-- just a really great flavor and the chicken was very well seasoned and very juicy, especially for being in an enchilada. My New Years goal is to try more restaurants in the Charleston area and this one has been on my list for a while. This was my first time here. I made reservations online thru Resy. When you walk in it feels like I am walking into a southwestern vibe. It's so nice and intimate. They have a small little salsa bar which is cool. We got the smoked brisket taquitos and I got the chicken street tacos and my husband got the Christmas Burrito. All the food was delicious. My husband cleaned his plate. We visited Rancho Lewis last Saturday night. I ordered a Mexican martini & it was good. I think the bar tender was heavy handed with the lime juice, as it was way more tart than I've had at Trudy's in Austin, where it originated. Loved the thick, fresh tortilla chips brought to the table & self-serve salsa bar. Such a fun appetizer! For dinner I ordered the wedge salad but had it made with romaine & added grilled shrimp. This salad was a flavor bomb. I loved it. But it only came with five shrimp &, sadly, they were over grilled. Some were even charred black in spots, so almost inedible. This was disappointing for a $6 add-on. I'd get the salad again, but with the pulled chicken. My husband got the beef ribs ($58.) He liked them, but our seven year old noted that there wasn't much meat on them! Overall, I enjoyed RL. It's a pricey menu for Tex-Mex fare, but I'd come back on occasion. read more

While we love Lewis BBQ, this second visit to Racho Lewis was a bit of a disappointment. Staff is fantastic, but the food is lacking given the price point. The venue is comfortable but the music very loud, especially when they aren't that busy. It's hard to have a conversation across the table whether you are sitting inside or out. The drinks are light on the alcohol and nothing notable flavor wise. The food is attempting to be an upscale version of basic southwestern/Mexican influenced cuisine. The portions for the money seem out of alignment. If the quality had been super high, I'd understand the portion sizing, but the chicken and beef in the fajitas seemed to be the type I'd expect from a lower end fast casual restaurant. The beans and rice are fine, but rarely do you find "amazing" or unique beans and rice. Regarding pricing, as an example, beef fajitas are $34 and if you ask for a mixed portion, they charge an additional $4 for chicken. As you can see from the photo, this is not a $38 portion of meat. Additionally, if you ask for more than 3 tortillas, there is an additional $6 upcharge for 3 more. That feels excessive for some flour that was put through a machine. I did enjoy the hot wings. The spice was great, but they were somewhat over sauced. Their green salsa is fantastic. This is NOT a necessary stop in the Charleston area. All things considered, there are so many other dining options so best to move on and try something else. read more

Night 1 on our weekend in Charleston we dined at Rancho Lewis. We made reservations a while back since there were 12 of us and when we got there they were finishing setting our table. It was nice that they were on time with our reservation and we didn't need to wait any time for our table. Service : our waiter was great. He welcomed us to Charleston and then told us he would give us a few minutes for us to review the menu and then told us about their tortilla chips and the Salsa Food: chips and salsa bar didn't disappoint. The issue a few of us that ordered chicken enchiladas or chicken tacos all said it was way too salty. The fish tacos were really good and tasty. A few minor issues was incorrect drink was brought to us as well as the food runner didn't know the difference between a chicken taco and fish taco, so the person who ordered the fish taco ate the chicken taco. The manager did bring the fish tacos when dinner was almost done. Would I go back yes, but maybe with a smaller group. read more

Small but diverse menu with great drinks. Part of the Lewis BBQ company so their brisket is to die for. Bartender makes strong and worthwhile drinks. The food was good, nothing amazing- all came out hot and correct, which is a plus! The service was what really brought the meal down a lot. I love this restaurant so much! It's incredible and the most authentically Southwest and Mexican style restaurant on the east coast. It rivals some of the best restaurants in Santa Fe for flavors and quality of food. I'm Colorado born and raised, with many trips to Taos and Santa Fe, and all over the Southwest. I had my graduation lunch at Rancho Lewis with a party of about 15. They knocked it out of the park! It could not have been a smoother experience. We had a reservation for 1:30 and they let us sit a bit earlier. We had pre chosen the courses we wanted to bring out for the entire table instead of letting everyone pick their own meal, and there was an option to pay that way. Our server was absolutely delightful and kept congratulating me and making me feel special! There is also a salsa bar with a bunch of different salsas, cilantro, and onion. That had to be my favorite part. You can also watch their tortillas be handmade and put on a conveyer belt! It is such a cool experience. Don't even get me started on the food. It had an amazing taste. We had vegetarians with us and it was no problem- they accommodated everyone. The veggie tacos actually tasted better than the meat to me! We were Downtown and the timing was right to finally try Rancho Lewis. It is legit, authentic Tex Mex and you can taste the quality. That being said... It comes with a pricetag. However, portions were large and definitely splittable. Plenty of parking and plenty of space down at the old workshop off King St Ext. The place is authentic from the breezeway to the kitchen... From the music to the pueblo wagon wheeled walls, wooden furniture, steer skull heads hanging and strings of chilli peppers. We had the lunch fajitas with steak (4 slices, approx 6oz) and chicken (4 slices, approx 6oz) sour cream, guac, pico, lettuce, rice, charro beans and fresh made corn (or flour) tortillas $22. You can order additional tortillas for $3 and it's sooo worth it! Also, get the So Far So Bueno... It's like a refreshing Paloma out of a bowl... So take a dive into some goodness while you're eating some of the best TexMex in town. And go ahead... While you're at is... An array of options to choose from, from traditional burritos, to fajitas, nachos, and several meat style options. I was feeling something lighter and got the tortilla soup-- it was amazing. Let me start by saying that I am b very lucky about my Mexican food. I like fresh, homemade dishes not smothered in sauces and cheese. The restaurant is really nice inside. We had a reservation but arrived early so we sat at the bar. We were given bowls of homemade chips which were amazing and directed to grab salsa at their self service salsa bar. All three salsa were delicious. My favorite was the tomatillo one which had just the right amount of spice. The bartender created me a spicy grapefruit margarita since it was in the menu and it was really good. The bartender's were great! Once seated we were greeted by Jackson who was amazing! He told us about the history of the family, the food and then offered up some suggestions of dishes. I ordered a tortilla encrusted fish that was absolutely delicious! I'm so mad I didn't take a picture of the menu because they haven't posted an updated one so I could give all the specifics of the dish. The sauce was just enough and the homemade coleslaw made it a 10 out of 10. My wife had a burrito which she loved. It didn't say that it was spicy but it did have a little too much spice for her so if you don't like spicy, you may want another dish. Our friend got the fajitas, as she apparently always does as they are great every time. Consistency is the key to keep regulars coming back! Overall, I really loved this place. If I went back I would order the same exact dish that I got! The only disappointment was that they didn't have churros yet. We were seated quickly and a server came to bring us water. We had plenty of time to look over the menu and were brought a bowl of chips. They explained the salsa bar options for us newbies.
