The server was friendly. Nothing special. The salad bar was decent. I ordered the 6 oz sirloin and shrimp. The shrimp was really good. The sirloin wasn't cooked enough (I asked for medium well) and wasn't very warm. So a little disappointed. My boyfriend ordered the 16 oz prime rib. He said that was really good. Its been like 10 years since we last visited the Hitching post with my dad they use to give you free popcorn as you waited to be seated my dad loved giving it to the grandkids.. I believe its under new ownership - my dad passed 7 years ago and we just have not gone back but finally decided to try it again.... NOT disappointed at all! It has since been remodeled since i last remember its very cute inside and they added a soup/salad bar... I ended up with the Friday night special of Broasted Chicken and Fried Cod OMG it was soooo good the cod was so tender and juicy at the same time the chicken moist inside and crispy outside - the salad bar was great as was the chicken orzo soup i had - hubby and my daughter both had burgers and enjoyed them.... we definitely will be back - our waitress was lovely and sweet and hostess attentive LOVE this place all over again! :) also can't beat the great prices for the amt of food you get! read more

Always a fantastic meal with fantastic service. We have been there several times and no matter the amount of people there the food is always consistently excellent. Great breakfast, great steak, fantastic fish fry and amazing desserts. The soup and salad bar is soooo good with homemade soup daily. Just don't eat the tuna pasta salad, cause I don't want it to be to popular and then their won't be any when I go!!! It's delicious!!! Food was pretty good. My kids had pulled pork and a burger and my wife and I had fish. The hostess was very friendly and tended to us very quickly. This rating could have been a 4 star but this place was packed with people and only one mask could be found. NO social distancing was practiced. NONE of the staff were wearing masks! This is the height of the pandemic (so far) and our hospitals are full. I've been there twice in the past 2 months, both experiences were the same and both experiences left me feeling unsafe. This place is a small little area behind our house that we actually really enjoyed. We had the Soup and salad bar. We also had Hot chocolate. We also had the spinach dip and a Montecristo sandwich with sweet potato fries. To start off with the salad was a basic tossed iceberg lettuce combination that had carrots and an assortment of vegetables. I am not a fan of iceberg lettuce so the salad was not that enjoyable. They did have a good variety of toppings and one thing I really enjoyed there was there a tuna salad. It was homemade when I asked the waitress in tasted very very good. I would give the salad it a two out of five but their tuna salad a five out of five. Their soups were phenomenal. I do not know if they were homemade or not but they were very very good. My favorite of the Soups was the cream of broccoli followed by the ham and bean soup. I also tried the beef and barley which was pretty great but was forgettable compared to the other two soups. The ham and bean how to surprising lime kick to it. The hot chocolate was pretty decent but they did not have any marshmallows. I'm glad they used milk instead of just hot water like a lot of places do so that's a bonus. For an appetizer we ordered the spinach dip. The spinach dip was a huge portion and fantastic one of my favorite things from there. It came with butter toast and tortilla chips which both complemented the dip very well. My boyfriend had the Montecristo ham sandwich with a side of sweet potatoes and pickles. He said that it blended very well together and the food was a great experience and the sandwich had a great pop of flavor to it. I will definitely be coming here again and I recommend it for anyone else. If I would have to say anything I would say skip the basic salad and have the tuna salad and soup it is very very good. read more

This place is surprisingly good! I have known of B&B Hitching Post for some time now. I have family that lives in Portage and we would often forget about this being option when we wanted to dine out. We decided to try it one night during the week and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, quality of the service, and the cleanliness of the place. Everything was perfect. The soup and salad bar provided many options. The menu had tons of different choices. I had Cod which is available any night of the week, it was really good! Another family member also ordered Cod. The third person decided to try the chicken strips and he described them as home made and VERY good quality. The waitress was very personable and even had a southern twang to her accent! She was quick to provide the check when asked too. The only thing that kept me from giving them 5 stars was the fact that we never received our appetizer, cheese curds. We asked for them and requested we get them first. We never did get them, when we received our food we decided to forget about it. They weren't on the check either so we didn't get charged. Generally I'd say something but we celebrating an occasion for a family member and I didn't want to sound like I was complaining. We will be back for sure! read more

Wow! The menu was versatile and very tasty. Serving sizes were VERY generous. Service was prompt, courteous and professional. We tried the Octoberfest beer on tap. Light and refreshing. Prices were incredibly reasonable. Their beef barley soup was excellent, generous vegatables in soup and not salty. Burgers were 1/3 lb. or larger. Flavorful and served hot. Beef chimichanga was enourmous, which included rice, beans, and a lovely little lettuce, diced tomatoes, cheese and olives at its base. Food was fresh and well prepared. The dessert case had homemade fruit pies, cheesecake and cake slices. Dutch Apple pie was made with organic apples. Yummy. This is a gem of a restaurant. They have a large screen TV around the bar. We recently moved to Portage, & have been trying local spots to dine. Short and sweet. We ordered from menu. They also offered buffet. ~ We were not told about buffet. My dining companion asked for American cheese over her hash browns. She got mozzarella/cheddar mix. My potatoes were old & had been reheated multiple times. They tasted of nothing but old oil. The texture was waxy and oily. & although they were hot when served, they went immediately cold. So, that's microwave reheating. The waitress cleared our plates. My potatoes were intact. The steak was a huge disappointment. Probably the worst steaks I've ever had. I got the 22oz ribeye and my husband got the porterhouse. Both were awful. It tasted like hamburger smells when it's been left in the fridge too long. Old meat. Both were extremely gristley as well. They were cooked correctly, beautiful grilling and perfect on the temps, but just bad meat. The salad bar was great, and good soup too. It's a shame they served us old meat though. ** I forgot to mention, the "au jus" they gave us, was not au jus but soy sauce. My family and I had dinner here and it was the best food we've had in a long time! I had the ribeye steak and it was cooked to perfection. I also highly recommend the beer battered fries and if you get ribs (also super fantastic) get the house BBQ. So delish!! Try everything....it's all terrific. They have the best breakfast around! My favorite is the spinach and artichoke frittata and my husband always gets the country skillet. This is a top pick for office lunches, service is quick and the food is always as expected. Their fish fry is perfection! The steaks are always done as ordered. Stayed in Portage for a 2-day hiking trip to Devil's Lake and found this place via Yelp. There was about a 30 minute wait to be seated, which wasn't surprising as it was a Friday during prime dinner hour. Sat at the bar and got a couple of amazing Old Fashionds from the attentive bartender. Once seated service and food were both great - we got the fish fry - I had the beer battered cod and my husband got broiled mahi mahi. Both were juicy and cooked perfectly. There was a great seafood chowder on the salad bar, and everything else on there looked fresh and appealing. The more they change the more they stay the same. Fish has changed. Not for the better. Kinda skimpy on the fries and the size of the patty in the patty melt. The decor is much improved. The best part of the meal? Seeing Jodi and Lisa. Probably the only reason we go in now. Especially with the way the hostess behaved, again. I want the meat loaf..no..broasted chicken, uh..ribs? Liver and onions..NOT! And you get enough, if you are a light eater, hello to go box. Monday even includes a little dessert! Of course there is always the large salad and soup bar that fills you up before the meal! Feel free to order off the menu. Each day has a theme special.
