Let me first start with what the picture is- pumpkin bread pudding. I HAD to have it because ... well, PUMPKIN. It's like pumpkin pie and pumpkin bread had an affair and this is their beautiful child they never knew they needed or wanted. It comes with a praline sauce but honestly, it doesn't need it. It covers up the spices. Tip: heat the bread up. Now.. the pasties. When we first moved to Reno from the Midwest we stopped here... and then on another trip back across the state, we had to stop again! Pasty spots aren't easy to come by so this spot is such a treat! We've had 4 different pasties. All great. My favorite was the Chile verde. We also tried the mini pecan pie which hit the spot. We will keep stopping in here when we can. I've been loving the Cornish pasties from here since they first opened in Palo Alto. Marcie was great, her son carried the tradition to Elko, and the new owners continue to keep the flame alive. The various pasties are all great but my favorite is the Cornish, which is basically a big chunk of ground beef and diced potatoes in a pastry crust. Very filing and a good deal. Sometimes they have frozen pasties to take and bake. The sweet pies are also still excellent; I'm partial to the strawberry rhubarb and pecan pies. The new shop is fine but very limited seating; it's pretty much a takeaway. We make a point to go through Elko every so often just to get a bunch, and we live in Western Oregon. I can't comment on the pasties, since I stopped here after lunch and only ordered dessert, but their double chocolate walnut brownie was very delicious. You can either get a room temperature dessert in the case at the counter or pull one from the refrigerator for a cold one. Not really any place to sit down inside since most all customers are ordering to go, but the service is very friendly. If I'm ever in Elko again, I'll try one of their famous meat pies. read more

Amazing food and excellent service! I am usually pretty hesitant to try new foods but was impressed by the overwhelmingly positive remarks on Yelp & decided to give this a try on our way to Lake Tahoe, we were not disappointed! The pastry is fresh and flakey and the filling is dense and delicious! They have two different sauces you can use if you'd like (I'm a purest). The restaurant itself is small with limited seating and no soda fountain but a cooler with a nice selection of cans. We didn't try desert this time but plan on stopping next time we're in town with a cooler so we can take pasties and pies home with us. Had a Cornish pastie for the 1st time yesterday, and they were awesome! Love the flaky pastry and perfectly seasoned fillings. I had the breakfast one, with scrambled eggs, sausage, and potatoes, and tried a bite of hubby's beef/mushroom (should have taken 2 bites, LOL). Both were delicious, especially with their sweet, spicy sauce, and I'm normally not much of a sauce person. I also bought a small blueberry pie that I'm looking forward to eating today. I wish I'd have bought a dozen frozen pasties to take home as I didn't realize they're closed on Sundays, and I'm craving one now! Can't wait to go back! I stop here every time I pass through Elko. It is great if you stick with simple, classic items. beef and cabbage is the best. Beef and potato is also great. Rhubarb pie is excellent. Some items are less appealing - beef and mushroom has big, whole mushrooms - kind of ruins the pastie. (Slice them up!). -Chicken pastie is dry (one of the gals there said they only make it because some people insist on eating chicken). -I like the Chile verde OK, but it is too hot for most people (hint: good chile verde doesn't have jalapenos). -Fruit pies are a mixed bag. Crusts are very good, although a bit thick. I love the rhubarb (very simple recipe). I bought a pie labelled as rhubarb, but it was peach. Peach pie had zero spices. just peaches in a crust. I've never had a Cornwall pasty before so I was intrigued to stop by to try one. I asked for the most popular pasties, and the cashier told me it depends on the day, but chili verde, beef & cabbage, and beef & potato were popular. I ended up getting a beef & cabbage pasty, since it was the first one on the menu. Anyway, I was asked if I wanted to eat it here or to-go, and I looked around and decided to stay, despite covid. The counter seating had three stools with six feet apart, so I sat and ate. The pasty was okay, it was lukewarm but not very flavorful. I saw the sauces when I was ordering and paying, so I went over and got some of their BBQ sauce and spicy sauce. That made the pasty a lot better, but it was still really bland. If you've ever had the pleasure of driving across the country with all your stuff and several screaming, pooping cats in the back seat of your car, and yourself having eaten nothing but truck stop buy-one-get-one-free ice cream cookie sandwiches for two days straight, then you'll understand what absolute paradise in the I-80 desert B.J. Bull Bakery is. And you know what?Even if you aren't under those pretty specific circumstances I'd still say this is a must-stop on any journey through, in, or around this area. Even worth going out of the way for, in my opinion. Their specialty are Cornish pies, of the savory and sweet variety, and they really out do themselves. The storefront is adorable, the family that works here is equally as adorable, and the pies are tasty as heck. So much so that after we scarfed down our first order, we went back purchased some frozen pies to take with us on the last leg of our journey to California. There's no shortage of savory meat options and we were told the beef and cabbage was the most popular, and it also has bits of sausage in it as well, so we got one of those frozen to-go, along with a frozen veggie and cheese for me. For our "dine-in" order (we actually ate it in the parking lot in our car with the cats) and we were sure to purchase a side of their habanero and regular bbq sauce for dipping - which is a must. The habanero is perfect and something even non-heat-seekers can handle given the correct pie to sauce dip ratio. We loved the sauce so much we yet again went back in purchased several more containers of it, though in hindsight I probably should have just ponied up for the bottles they sell. I stuck with the veggie option for my dinner pie, and it was chock full of hearty root veggies and apparently cheese, though the veggies filling really kind of takes over... not that that's a bad thing. My Dad got the beef and mushroom and immediately noted how fantastic it was, just before he lead the suggestion to head back in and get more pies to go. In addition to our savory pies, I scooped up a kale salad (which was ok- nothing crazy special but they do have a deal where you purchase a pasty (pie), kale salad, and a bottle of ginger beer so $8.50, so that's nice and it's certainly enough for a hearty meal and then some. It was nice that the pasties are easy to eat with just your hands and the paper bag packaging so it wasn't an ordeal for us to enjoy them on the road like the melting ice cream sandwiches were. And since we're not dummies, be also took a fresh, hot rhubarb pie with us since it seemed like the only sensible thing to do, and we certainly had no regrets on that one. It was the perfect-est rhubarb anything I've ever had. It was crazy tart or crazy sweet - it was just right and exactly the way I always hope rhubarb desserts will be. They had a number of dessert pies, several of them seasonal like the pumpkin, which I kind of might have to come up with another excuse to drive all the way back out here for. read more

Sometimes things you love end up in the craziest places. I used to frequent the shop in Palo Alto espcially during the snow season when I would stock up on pasties for Tahoe. The shopping center that they were in has now become housing and some minor retail but I was sad for many years when it was idle. Now Elko NV is not that close to Tahoe but its close enough to make a trek every once in a while. It's good to see that they've flourished still, though many miles away from where they used to be. I haven't eaten here and I have only taken the food to go, either in frozen form or in the handy warmed form. I've only experienced super helpful and friendly staff pack up a to go order for me on short notice. I've only taken pies to go and eaten them with eye rolling satisfaction. I've only tried and enjoyed every type of pastie they serve. I've only NOT gone broke buying all these wonderful offerings because the prices are reasonable. But I haven't been disappointed, that is for sure. I am glad I don't live in Elko because, even though they aren't just more dough than anything else, I know I would over-indulge and have way too many carbohydrates than I should if this place was in my back yard. So, the next time you are either staying in Elko or just driving through. I urge you to check this place out. Are we grading on a curve? If this place were in San Francisco next to a similar place selling organic grass-fed cage-free, whatev pasties it might just get 4 or even 3 stars. But it's in Elko, so I wish I could give it 6. We drive through at least once a year and there are few options for decent food at any price, even for omnivores. Plus it's the perfect road food. Eat your fill here, then get a bunch to go. Stop on the road, lift your hood, put the foil-wrapped pastie on the engine, lower your hood, then drive until you smell lunch. Voila! - Internal Combustion Panini Maker. They were delicious. We avoided eating anywhere else on the way back, planning on stopping here - but they were closed. We were trapped and starving in Nevada in winter. To avoid being a Donner Party, we had to get food at Albertson's and Starbucks. So check ahead. read more

We found this place through Yelp and I'm glad we did because it was perfect for our drive through Elko. When we walked in we were greeted by a very friendly man and served immediately.
