We got a couple beef and mushroom pasties and they were out of this freakin world. The problem with them being so good is that we wound up ordering a veggie, beef and cabbage, egg and sausage, AND a rhubarb pie for dessert, and walked out of there smiling, but totally stuffed! Best was the Beef and Mushroom, with the Veggie and Beef and Cabbage a close second. Crust was flakey and delicious. Over 30 years ago this place was in Los Gatos California. I can still remember the smell of freshly baked Pasty's wafting toward me as I climbed the wooden stairs to their little shop. Who knew? A genuine Cornish Pasty shop in Elko, Nevada! This place was a charming, non-chain find...clean as a whistle, super friendly staff, great food. Obviously caters to take-out, but there was a counter facing the window and a newspaper. Only negative was the coffee could have been better. These are hands-down the best pasties I've ever had, including my mom's. Our family each bought one as we stopped for lunch while driving through Nevada. Before we even left the parking lot, we turned around, bought more to share and a bottle of the sauce. The overall favorite was beef and cabbage, and our second favorite was a spicy one, but I don't remember what it was. If I remember, I'll update my status. Their pasties recipe is authentic. We ordered a pecan pie, the chicken and rice, beef and mushrooms, breakfast, and egg and cheese pasties. Smells and looks yummy, however each one was super dry and dense. Couldn't swallow past 2 bites due to the dryness. Where's the juice? This place is wonderful! I was driving through Elko and fate brought me here. I tried the pecan pie with my wife and both of us agreed it was delicious! If you're ever in Elko B.J. Bull Bakery is a must. My husband and I were in Elko for 24 hours and ate here twice. They had a large menu to select from, a little something for everyone. My husband loved his beef and mushroom pastie and their special sauce just added to it. My chicken and rice pastie was perfection, the crust flaky and satisfying while the interior ingredients were ultra flavorful without being mushy. For breakfast my husband enjoyed his sausage and egg pastie while we drove out of town, I opted for carrot cake which was the best carrot cake of my life. My only regret is that I didn't get an extra piece for lunch. This family run establishment is super friendly and has amazing food. I highly recommend you try one of their pasties or pies. read more

Found this place on yelp as we were passing through Elko on our way to Utah. We were not dissappointed! It surely lived up to its high ratings! So I am just in Elko (from Reno) for the week on business and before I left, my coworkers who had been here previously were telling me about this place and how good it was. I wasn't sure if I was going to stop by but I finally decided I better. I went in and first thing, the owner asked me what I wanted and I told him I'd never been there before so immediately he asks me if I like mushrooms and pulls out a hot beef and mushroom pastie, chops it in half, and gives me half to try. Well it was pretty damn good! I had a really hard time deciding what I should get but ended up settling with the cheese and veggie but then wished I'd had a beef and potato or beef and cabbage. If you don't like Lima Beans, don't get the veggie! Luckily I do like them :) I think I will be stopping in again on my way back to Reno! read more

Crust is perfect and they are stuffed full of home made stuff. Great deal for the family and no need to feel guilty about the usual I-80 fare.. be sure to pick up a pie on the way out. Circa Summer '09, Road Trip from Yuma to Vancouver, BC. After an overnight stay in Las Vegas, we drove up to Elko, NV--which was a logical next stopover since we only wanted to be on the road for a good six hours or so, what with two kids and a senior doggie. "What is that? I think they mispelled pastries", I said, as I noticed the sign that said, "Cornish Pasties". Maybe they have good snacks, I told hubby. So, in went hubby. And when he came out, he had ordered these hot and flaky meat pies. I remember the mushroom and beef, and the sausage and potato pies. Everybody LOVED them! Who knew?????? In Elko, NV? The owner said he used to live in San Francisco. I couldn't help but wonder what the heck is he doing in Elko, NV? (But in the same vein, what the heck am I doing in Yuma? he-he) From now on, it will have to be "de rigeur" to make the trek up to Elko, on our future road trips to the North/Northwest. The pasties came out warm, but not burn your face off hot so you have to wait 10 minutes for your mouth to heal and you can't even taste the pasty anyway. Tasty pasties! This is a great place for a lunch stop when you're roadtripping through Nevada. Pasties are Cornish meat pies in the shape of empanadas, and the ones here are superb. This trip I got a beef and mushroom pasty, and I definitely recommend it. The button mushrooms are very savory and the beef tender. The crust is flaky without being greasy or tough. I also recommend getting one of their sauces to dip in--I love their habanero sauce! On our way to Reno we stayed the night in Elko to visit some friends. In the morning they recommended this place for a tasty breakfast. Their recommendation, as usual, paid off. This place isn't much to look at, filling the role of whole-in-the-wall nicely. We sampled the breakfast pasties and a peach pie. Delish! They conveniently sell their offerings frozen for eating later as well. The lady at the counter was friendly, rounding out a great morning mealtime experience before hitting the road. Having exchanged hands more than once, this place has been around and is a fixture in the Elko community. Spectacular! If you've never had a pasty, I won't ruin the surprise for you (look it up - Cornwall is famous for these), but think basically a UK version of a calzone and you'll be in the ballpark. If you don't know what a calzone is, stop reading; you're dead to me. These things are the quintessential miner food and Elko is a great mining town, so it fits here nicely thematically. If you want local color, this is one of the "must" stops in town. I wound up having the chicken and rice, as it was the only one "safe" (onion-free) for me. It was spectacular (with hot sauce, but a touch bland by itself) and I nearly ordered a bunch more to go. Definitely will be hitting this place up again next time I come again...I'd almost consider making a trip just for those, actually. However, this is primarily a bakery patterned after Britain, so pies and bread puddings are here as well. The peach pie I had was curiously nearly devoid of moisture, but quite flavorful and not at all cloyingly sweet. One of the bigger stories for me here was that this places makes it own hot sauce. I partook and found it excellent, on both the pasty and the pie (yes, I did that) and bought a bottle to take home. I'll probably review it on the blog later, but this concoction is brewed in house and while not especially resplendent with heat, works extremely well with whatever you put it on, which is a mean trick to be able to pull off. It is a bit on the sweet side, but balanced very skillfully. Very clearly, the proprietor here is a master. Inside, there's not much in the way of decor, just a long table with a lot of history and lore of the food, how it fit into Elko and its respective origins from England, which I appreciated. The food it meant to be portable grab-and-go, so I don't imagine there is much demand for interior seating, but know that going in. This is more of an aside comment than anything else. Cornish Miners Tasty Pasty in Elko, Say What??? Elko has a hidden treasure called the Cornish Pasty. It's cheap and worth the stop. So what is a Tasty Pasty? Imagine a Hot Pocket but way better. The dough is flaky, light, and buttery. Hot and Ready. I wanted more but my stomach wouldn't allow me. What did we order: Beef and Mushroom (Simple but yummy, sometimes simplicity is all you need) Apple Fruit Pie (The best apple pie I've ever had and I love apple pie! The only down fall was the pie was served cold. So imagine if the pie was served hot. I WISH I requested the pie to be warmed up with a dollop of whip cream, it would have made the experience so much sweeter. So don't be afraid to ask. The apple pie crust had a sweet glaze crunch, which balanced out the tart and spice of the filling.) I loved the pasty but I gave it 4 stars because of inadequate seating. Always great pasties and friendly service! However, I hadn't been here in a while and wanted to take home some beef & mushroom pasties. It was about 2pm and when I asked to get some, they only had one left. Really? You don't keep a well stocked freezer of pasties??? It was disappointing and I wound up only buying the one pastie instead the dozen that I wanted. You lost a sale and I lost faith. The signage really needs to be updated. It's boring and doesn't make a newcomer want to stop, especially if they don't know what a pastie is. Signs are difficult to read. Also, it would be nice if the business hours were displayed in the window, not just the opening hour. read more

We stopped into BJ Bull because of the yelp reviews and man were they right. We have had the turkey/stuffing/cranberry, the chili verde, the beef and mushroom and the breakfast over the course of several days and all were delicious but my favorites are the breakfast and chili verde. If you don't eat them piping hot they rehear perfectly in an oven and the microwave does an adequate job but if you have an oven go that route. It's worth the time investment. What a surprise. The last thing I excepted to find in North Eastern Nevada was English food. I stopped about 10:30 in the morning. We wanted lunch but it was too early for most places to be serving lunch. We had two pasties, beef and mushroom and beef and potato. They were delicious. Piping hot. Perfect crust. The perfect lunch for a lovely fall day! Me and my husband had the awesome turkey, cranberries, and stuffing pasties with apple beer (very crisp type natural beverage). We just can't get enough of this pastie establishment. Makes me feel like I'm back in the U.K. with the incredible old world tasting recipes.
