$3000 purchase Let me start off with the good. A nice family owned business for decades and was one of the reasons I chose them for my tank purchase. The staff was more then friendly and helpful during the purchase. Now for the crappy part. I bought a 125 gallon setup for my family as a Christmas gift in Dec of 2021. It's a beautiful tank and we were thrilled until about 8 months later the tank started to leak from the right side corner. I was told it was under warranty for a year. I contacted the store and was bounced around for a couple of days telling me someone would get back to me. They stated they were waiting to hear back from their distributor. That day never happened so I called once more 8 days later to be told there was nothing they could do. I ask if they could send someone to my house since they installed it and was told to buy aquarium waterproof silicone and repair it myself. They sell it there if I wanted to stop in. Keep in mind I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm a novice to the hobby and was shocked that this was my answer I received from them. Fast forward I purchase the silicone online and follow instructions of install. I still wasn't able to correct the leak. I'm praying that it doesn't get worse so I'm searching for a local company to come and see if there is anything that can be done. I have been to every pet store on Long Island(not kidding) I am a huge enthusiast of both reptile/amphibian, aquariums, and even birds like small finches. I have over a decade of experience in animal keeping. I kid you not, these are the worst conditions I have ever seen animals kept in. I get that it is retail conditions but you have a Day Gecko housed with hermit crabs, 3 snakes with bad sheds and malnourished body frames. Lizards of varying species housed together. One with an open wound on his abdomen, another with mouth rot.. Full grown Matamata turtle housed in a 20 gallon tank. It physically cannot move in any direction. It's enough space for it to sit and stay beneath the water. Please for the love of all that is holy... avoid their animals read more

I recently got a feathered friend, a cockatiel, from BTJ's. i'm happy that my birb is well tamed, hand fed, and warmed up to me within a few days. you just don't get that from "pet$mart" type stores. the staff was super accommodating, they entertained and helped with all hundred of my questions, and i absolutely will go back to them should i decide to add to my flock :) read more

Bought a 2.6 gallon Fluval Aquarium yesterday for my grandson's birthday along with the rocks, food, conditioner, plants etc. PLUS 3 fish. Turns out my daughter already had a 5 gallon all set up ready for the new fish. Today, less than 24 after I paid $79 for the aquarium I stopped by to return it. "Store credit only" I was told. Mind you I dropped $170 all told yesterday but nonetheless I couldn't get a refund for the aquarium which was never even opened. I'll save it and maybe one of my other grandkids might want an aquarium. But, seriously, what a lousy, dirty store. Probably has hundreds of health and safety violations. Stay clear. Stay away. Disgusting husbandry. Young birds of different species crammed into a 10 gallon aquarium. Rabbits bred to high hell. Axolotls in cramped shallow enclosures sometimes with fish. Fish tanks almost all have dead fish. Large fish kept in tanks that they barely fit in. Around 10 turtles shoved in a small bin climbing all over each other. Ball pythons housed in large groups. Some of the staff are rude and/or unknowledgeable making terrible recommendations ie. 5 neon tetra/white cloud mountain minnows in a 2.5 gallon tank. Store is insanely cluttered like a hoarders house and there are too many animals to reasonably take care of properly. Not sure where to report this place. read more

The man at the front is not friendly at all. He was sitting on his phone when I went to check out. He gave me a quick glance, continued scrolling through photos on his phone and then decided to get up and help me. He through my card on the counter after he was done. Just rude as hell. Do not support this business! Please just read the reviews and do your self a favor. Place should be shut down. Purchased two rabbits, a baby and the breeder mother.. the baby died within two days and the mother just died after only 3 months. Paid $160 for two dead rabbits and devastation. (Both kept in huge indoor enclosures, fresh food, water, bedding daily) no reason this should have happened. Place is disgusting and employees say one thing and then tell owners it was never said. Completely inadequate and cruel bird care. The birds in these photos are different species, which should never be kept together- let alone cramped into an aquarium. This is a vector for injury and disease, especially considering the size difference between species. If BTJ's jungle is unable to properly house birds (each species in its own cage, with a proper bird cage with ventilation) they should not sell them. The person running their Facebook page claims they are babies and "cannot stand yet", and while these birds may be young, they can very clearly stand and are eating solids, and need to be housed separately. read more

The tall guy at the register has a nasty, unwelcoming & rude vibe. Ive taken my mother here when she visits and the 3 times we've visited, the same man is as miserable as can be to her. We'r very supportive to local business, but something tells us the big guy could care less whether he loses customers. If he's the owner - shame on him ! Went in today with my daughter just to look at the animals and saw the saddest looking bunny that was very friendly that I was ready to buy just to get her out of there. I asked her age and was told 1.5-2 years but she's not for sale she's their breeder. This poor bunny is just being used for breeding to make them money, no quality of life whatsoever, she's full grown in such a small cage with just hay and bedding in it. I can't get this poor girl out of my mind and wish I could save her from this horrible life. The store was also quite dirty all the birds were stacked on top of each other over 10 feet up in the air all crammed in cages together. read more

Do not buy any animals from this store, their customer service is despicable the manager John is nasty and unsympathetic not sure why he works with animals. Bought my daughter a baby bunny from them October 22 nd bunny suddenly died November 7th, she was well cared for not sure why she suddenly died, we rushed her to the vet but it was to late. I called the store and had the pleasure of speaking to John the manager, who did nothing but scream at me and question why it took me a week to call him. Um we are devastated, I am a single parent working 2 jobs living paycheck to paycheck, this horrible bastard has the WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER EXPERIENCED IN MY LIFE, all he did was continue questioning the timeline which I can prove from my credit card and the vet the bunny was brought to. i Very calmly explained what happened and that I live paycheck to paycheck this was a financial hardship for me the ,east he can do is refund the cost of the bunny. Hi, I am writing to raise concerns over the terrible living conditions of the small animals at BTJ Jungle -- which, as you can see from several other reviews, are TERRIBLE. The small animals, including birds such as parakeets and cockatiels, are stuffed into extremely small cages that give no room for flight or really walking around more than a few inches in any direction. They have parakeets and cockatiels in the smallest cage, with ALMOST NO SUNLIGHT or room light barely making it into the cages, and no room to fly around or even hop. The food and water bowls are dirty. You can tell the ANIMALS ARE MISERABLE and not in the right environment. Even Petco and Petsmart have more spacious habitats for their smaller animals, and they don't have an insane number of animals (like birds) at any one time. Unlike BTJ Jungle, Petco and the like (i.e. corporations) are decently responsible and know birds don't sell as much and have longer life spans. I know BTJ Jungle is a small business, but that DOES NOT EXCUSE THE TERRIBLE LIVING ENVIRONMENT FOR THE ANIMALS HERE. None of the birds have toys nor items for enrichment or keeping occupied while they wait to be sold.They have so many of them stuffed into cages and enclosures because they only care about the money the birds sell for, otherwise they'd only carry as many as they typically sell -- and I bet they don't even sell many, so these birds are stuck there for so long in their lives. This is a terrible establishment and pet shop and I hope you don't support the miserable living environments they keep their birds and small animals in by not shopping here. This place should close down or greatly reduce the amount of animals they maintain because they obviously cannot house them ethically. read more

I'd say about 1/3 of the fish tanks either have dead or dying fish. The guys in the fish department are rude and have no problem selling fish together who shouldn't live together in one tank - whether it's from ignorance or apathy I don't really know. At one point they had baby piglets for sale and now have one 6 month old which they adverse as full size. Pigs grow until they're 3-5 years old and even a Juliana pig will reach between 100-150lbs unless you starve it. And the poor pig isn't even neutered which will cost hundreds more to get done. But of course they don't tell people that. read more

I've been coming here for years and I love this place! I've bought cockatiels, rats, my cat of 5 years and supplies for my snake. Their prices are great and the animals always look clean and happy. Do not buy fish from this store. I recently purchased a fish from this store and it had no signs of illness. My tank of chiclids that I bred and raised for 4 years all suddenly got ick. I followed all the necessary steps to treat the infection (medication, raise water temperature, remove filter media because carbon neutralizes the medicine, and 80% water changes). 2 days after infection all 20 of my chiclids are dead. Considering I haven't had a fish die in this tank in over 2 years and have extremely good tank maintenance this leaves the culprit to be the fish I recently purchased from this store. read more

This is hands down the best pet store on the island. Not only have I been coming here since I was a kid, but so has my father. The reviews about not caring for the animals are completely unfounded and down right wrong. I've never met owners and employees who care more about animals. I bought a beautiful chinchilla from here. She is so healthy and makes the absolute best pet. Jenn was so helpful in helping me get everything I need. She even gave me her personal number so I could call her at anytime for feeding advice, etc. Their birds and bunny Larry did not escape their cage- they're aloud to roam free so they're not trapped in cages 24/7. Larry is a wonderful, potty trained rabbit who gets to spend his days greeting customers. How cute! This is a pet store- fish are inevitably going to die. Every time I visit B.T.J.'s the tanks and cages are being cleaned, ph tested etc. I also purchased a fish tank here. When the light broke after a couple of years, the owner John helped me to get a new light and was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. He gave us advice on how to decorate and set up the tank as well and what fish to get to make sure they all get along. I wouldn't go anywhere else! We look forward to using BTJ's for our outdoor koi pond this summer. They do amazing work. A great place to take your children and hands down the best pet store on the island. read more

I love this place. My boyfriend and I come here just to look around and get a few things for his bird. We could both spend hours in this store. Let's just say, it is a jungle in here! So many fish, birds, rabbits, hammys, guinea pigs, frogs, snakes, turtles, spiders, lizards oh my! On our last visit, we were walking around and I spotted something on the floor and was like "is that real?!" It was a huge tortoise just chillin' on the floor. The animal selection isn't the only thing that is a jungle, but the store itself is a little all over the place, crowded, and just doesn't seem like the cleanest place in the world. It's all good. We always admire the fish area first. Upon on our last trip we noticed a lot of "floaters." In one tank, all the fish were stuck to an air vent in the top of the tank. A man that works there seems to always be on his cell phone "closing a deal" is what I think he said last time. After that, onto the main area with the majority of the animals. There is a beautiful parrot that is not caged, pretty to look at but no touching. I love hamsters. The first time I went one of the ham's just had given birth. I was excited to see the wiggling hairless bodies in the cage. A young employee was picking through the babies and one had apparently died. She just scooped it up, and tossed it in the big trash bin. Literally tossed it. My boyfriend and i just looked at each other in shock. We nervously laughed it off and the employee was embarrassed. She apologized profusely! Staff is always there to making sure you don't need help and realize most are probably just browsing. The bird selection is stunning. So many different breeds. We will def. come here for the next bird. My favorite was a house parrot (caged) who talks! I was hysterical when it cat call whistled at me! Very cool shop. Great rainy day activity! read more

What is animal cruelty? B.T.J's jungle is animal cruelty. They need to be shut down immediately. No filters are provided for any of the fish including the axolotls. The woman that claims to breed did not provide a filter for any of the axolotls nor any effort of a keeping the axolotls tanks at the appropriate temperatures, 58-64 degrees is where they range the most comfortable. Not only to mention fungal infection on most of the axolotls and very poor full health. This place should be shit down asap !!! Every fish/ animal was crammed in a cage/ tank with multiple others. Very sad ASPCA should get involved immediately before more of there endangered specifies pass away due to poor knowledge of proper care or the shop owners lazy routine of barely maintenance any of there habitats let alone making sure there on a proper/healthy diet. Very dissatisfied with this store and even more heartbroken for All the animals there I cannot rescue. read more

One time I went and watched an employee eat his sandwich for lunch while handling the rabbits with no protective gear. Not too sure what to make of this long time West Islip pet store. Their original location burned down some years ago and they no longer have many exotic animals on display. The store itself is a bit of a mess. Inventory seems to be scattered around and piled up so finding something specific could be challenging. They have an impressive selection of fresh and salt water aquarium fish but there were a few dead ones floating around so I was iffy about buying any from them. Their aquarium supplies seemed a bit pricy as well. They have many different birds and reptiles as well. Rabbits, rodents and sometimes puppies and kittens as well. As an alternative to the big name pet stores, this one is okay but I did find it slightly over priced and the store too messy and tight. You be the judge. read more

This is the worst pet store ever the owner is rude the staff don't know what the hell they're doing they have no knowledge of what fish they're giving people I went in there looking for a Cooley loach I left there with some kind of a Siamese cat fish that attacks it killed a rainbow shark of clown loach Upside down catfish and a guppy when I went back to the store to show them what they gave me the man said that I was all over the place and didn't know what I wanted and and this that and the third refused to give me my money back refuse to replace the fish that that it killedI didn't ask for this fish they gave me the wrong fish I believe they should have replaced the fish that were killed I am so upset about the whole ordeal watching this fish literally eat my other fish was absolutely horrifying there was blood everywhere pieces of fish everywhere it was absolutely horrifying and when I gave him back the fish he was very nasty and told the guy to give me 2 Cooley Loches I've had my fish tank for a little over three months now and I haven't lost any fish until now and all my fish got a long even fish that they said shouldn't have got along did and like I said the staff doesn't know what they're doing and doesn't know what they're giving you when I went back there to try to replace some of the fish that were killed they didn't know what anything was in the tanks they were selling me things that were going to be aggressive oh no that's not aggressive and then they're telling me they are aggressive they don't know anything do not buy anything from the store unless you want a dead fish tank I have never been so upset in my life watching my fish get an eaten and bloody everywhere read more

Birds, lizards, snakes, scorpions (blech!) and tarantulas(blech!) check. 2 fluffy puppies in the front check. Fishies and turtles check. Ok so this store pretty much has most of what the others offer (maybe minus cats and lots of dogs). The store doesn't smell and the animals look happy and healthy. The prices seem to run midrange compared to other stores I've been to. The staff is accommodating and will help you. A cool little store to bring the kiddies, they will love it. read more
