Best banh mi in the east coast, hands down. I've been going here since I was a kid, and now that I moved away, it's one of the things that I miss about Boston. I always get the banh mi thit nuong (BBQ beef), and I also recommend the banh mi dac biet (combination pork) if it's your first time. Everything about it was perfection. Banh mi is roughly $6-7 each. You can even buy containers of their homemade butter and pate. They also have baked goods, snacks, desserts, drinks and other vietnamese dishes. I haven't tried their baked goods yet, but everything else has always been good. Their drinks are also popular and are a separate line. It's always busy, especially on the weekends and the line wraps around. The line moves efficiently, and sometimes they'll let you skip ahead if you're only ordering banh mi (I've only heard them announce this in Vietnamese though). Ba le used to be the place to go for a good banh mi and sugarcane juice. I grew up coming here with family. I remember when one banh mi used to be $3 and now it's over $10 I think the quality has certainly gotten worse over the years with their gaining of popularity amongst westerners. Cutting corners on quality to keep up with cost and demand was not the way to go. Now that banh mi is trending in the food world, there are plenty of other places to grab a good banh mi - some places have even better quality with a cheaper price tag. (Ie: banh mi Boston in quincy and downtown, banh mi le in quincy, lumi in braintree, chau's in Dorchester and randolph) It's not that I don't like the banh mi here, it's just not worth the price tag in my humble opinion. The banh cuon is $7ish, portion is much smaller and there was no pork or mushroom inside. Simply paid for empty rice rolls. That's issue one. The next, egg tarts, tasty but no price tag. After it was paid for and we looked at the receipt it was $1.50 for one tiny egg tart. Most Asian bakeries charge $2.00 for nearly double the size. If I knew I wouldn't have spent $6.00 for basically 2 full size egg tarts. Banh Mi Ba Le is honestly a great spot for affordable and tasty banh mi and pandan desserts. I got the banh mi chay (4/5), or meatless with tofu, and it was very flavorful. I don't know what they put in that yellow mayo-like sauce, but it's packing flavor. I also really enjoyed the pandan cake (4/5) for its strong pandan flavor and great chewy texture. A visit to Ba Le feels like Christmas, no matter what time of the year it is. The staff are really kind and some of them love to chat while you wait on the line, which always snakes around the store. I love waiting in line and picking up new things to try-- it's the best way to discover new treats. On my most recent visit, I bought cơm cháy chà bông, which are these delicious rice crackers speckled with pork floss and their house fish sauce (which is perfectly spiced) that were so addicting and reminded me of Thai khao teen crackers but a savory version. In addition to the snacks and goodies, I always make sure to pick up an order or two of the their bánh cuốn đặc biệt (steamed rice noodle rolls flecked with pork and mushrooms and served with a heap of charcuterie and mung bean sprouts), their bánh da lợn (steamed layered cakes with mung bean and pandan), and of course, their famed bánh mì. The top two bestsellers are their #1: đặc biệt (cold cut) and their #2: thịt bò nướng (BBQ beef). Both options are incredible, and I would recommend you get both because then you'll have a tasty sandwich for later. I have to give major props to their homemade rice flour baguettes they use for their bánh mìs because it is one of the best I've had outside of Vietnam. It's light, fluffy, and crisp but not enough that it will pierce the roof of your mouth. I also love their house pâté, which they sell by the pint and whatever black magic scallion oil they drizzle over their bbq beef because they are both heavenly and truly the best part of the bánh mìs. PS- Sorry I have no idea what the prices are because they're not always labeled and I go wild like a kid in a candy store. I've heard so much hype for this place and while I do not have the expertise to comment on whether the food is authentic or not, I will say that I enjoyed everything I tried from them. I paid a little under $20 for a beef banh mi, a steamed pandan layer cake, and a banh tet filled with pork and savory mung bean paste. The beef banh mi was super tasty! Come here if you want the BEST BANH MI in the Boston Area. Banh Mi ingredients seem simple but I have never had better banh mi elsewhere than at Ba Le. I had their banh mis growing up and still love it till this day. My family lives an hour away but if they are in the area they would bring back banh mis from Ba Le. My go-to is their BBQ beef. The freshly baked baguette, bbq sauce, special butter, and veggies combo makes me genuinely so happy. They also have a variety of other vietnamese dishes that I enjoy. I love the rice rolls, clear shrimp and pork dumplings (banh bot loc), spring rolls. For drinks, I love the freshly squeezed sugar cane drink and coffee! They used to mix the sugar cane with orange juice which was heavenly but I don't think they offer that anymore. Nonetheless the sugar cane drink is still delicious!! Tips: There is 1 line for everything and this is more of a grab and go than dine in due to the size. I usually find parking on the side or around the corner. For the newbies: you wait in the same line to buy anything, be it banh mi, snacks from the store area, buns, etc. If you want banh mi, just stand in the line until you get near the cash register. There are a couple aunties busting out the sandwiches there. When it's your turn, one of them will sort of look at you, so this is when you give your order. I think it's better understood to say the name of the flavor rather than the number on the menu. For example, "one BBQ pork, one BBQ beef" rather than "two number 2s, one pork and one beef". Learn from my mistakes friends. Now, the banh mi themselves are so good. I'd recommend the BBQ pork personally. The meat is so fresh, tender, and flavorful. The sauces and toppings they use complement the meat perfectly. This is not a sit-down place, more of a grab and go food court counter vibe - trays of hot food ready to be scooped into tupperware, bakery items, drinks, and some pre-packaged meals and desserts. They're known for their banh mis which are delicious and light on the wallet (my go-to is the pork bbq), but their rice plates and noodle dishes are definitely worth a try too. Everything is reasonably priced and I always spend less than I would typically expect for a meal around Boston (I think, occasionally, they will genuinely forget to charge you for items). Visited on a Sunday morning ~11 AM and it was already very busy with a long line but it moved fairly quickly, thanks to the highly efficient workers. We ordered 3 banh mi (combination pork, braised pork belly, and BBQ beef), 3 beef and 3 shrimp spring rolls, and a combination fried rice. The banh mi were phenomenal. The bread is really the star of the show, warm, crispy on the outside and pillowy on the inside. Just exploding with flavor and contrasting textures with the crunchy fresh veggies packed inside. Possibly the best banh mi I've ever tried in my life. The spring rolls were delicious and super fresh as well.
