During our whale watch boat ride, a local family recommended Boston Sail Loft. The place is on the water, smaller, but has better prices than the competition. First come, first served poilcy. We first came on a Sunday afternoon, but were met with an hour and 45 minutes wait for a table of two. The following rainy Tuesday, we tried again and were able to get seated immediately, next to a window overseeing the water. I had the seafood platter and a cup of chowder. My wife had whole lobster for $40. TONS of delicious food. Four days prior, Union Oyster House had whole lobster for about twice the cost. All of the food was delicious. Busy restaurant on the water and one of my favorite lobster rolls on this trip. Huge portions and very lively in here. Server was a bit slow but due to the influx from the FIFA fans. Started with the cup of clam chowder that comes dripping from the cup. They use a lot of dill here and come out hot. A bit on the salty side but oyster cracker helps with that. The lobster mac and cheese came with a salad. The lobster mac had a nice broiled cheese top and a creamy inside. Nice lobster and cheesy flavor to it. I got the warm lobster roll and changed it to come with onion rings for $1. The onion rings tasted homemade. Slight crisp to it and thick onions. The lobster roll was massive and the amount of lobster it came with was incredible. Poured the hot butter and squeeze lemon on it for an amazing bite. This was just a great overall experience. The food is solid, the vibe is excellent, the service is pretty good, location is nice on the water and it is exactly what one looks for in their visit to Boston. Tourist trap. Best clam chowder? I beg to differ, had way better at the Chelsea Market fish market. Our plan was to sit outside at a table on their SIDEWALK area with my 10lb dog in her stroller, but the hostess said, with an attitude, no dogs allowed in the patio area. Patio area? You mean the sidewalk? Isn't the sidewalk a public area? We were confused. We tried to clarify because maybe he was confused? But no, he said no again. My mom was hungry so we opted to get a bowl of chowder to go and we put our name down at the restaurant next door who was UBER dog friendly and even gave my girl a dog bone when we checked in, and lots of pets. Sail me to the moon with the Clam Chowder they make here! Our first stop on a food tour, we came in for the legendary Clam Chowder. It was an absolute treat to say the least. Thickest, most seasoned, and most delicious Clam Chowder I've ever had. I wanted a second one but knew we had more on our tour to enjoy so I had to resist. Please forgive me--but sometimes people really do get it so wrong. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the good reviews about this place, as I fell into a tourist trap-- like a bear to honey. We were visiting Boston for the first time and, after a long day of travel on a cold, rainy evening, we were looking forward to a "classic" New England meal--especially clam chowder and a lobster roll. The restaurant was very crowded and loud (Sunday night), but we were seated fairly quickly. However, service was underwhelming; our waitress wasn't particularly engaging or helpful with recommendations. We ordered the clam chowder and a cold lobster roll, along with lobster mac & cheese for my child and a rice and stir-fried vegetable dish for myself. The clam chowder was decent, but quickly forgettable. The lobster roll was fine, but nowhere near the reputation it carries. The mac & cheese was similarly underwhelming from the first bite. The veggie stir-fry dish was inedible. I returned it after the first bite. Unless you enjoy food straight out of a mall food court in 1985--stuck in time, and not in a good way. They should be ashamed to offer this as the ONLY vegetarian option: too sweet, too sticky, and completely underwhelming. The manager did acknowledge that this dish is not well received in general. So why is it still on the menu? Overall, the experience didn't live up to the reputation or the reviews we had seen. After walking our way through Boston for the day, we stopped for a late lunch at Boston Sail - we were seated immediately on a weekday for a late lunch, right by a window. My husband and I both opted for clam chowder and a lobster roll. The chowder was probably some of my favorite - the amount of dill in it was heavenly and made it taste so fresh! Perhaps my favorite stop in Boston right after an aquarium day. We were maybe 6th in line and glad we were because this place gets packed very quickly! We opted to sit outside on that beautiful day and our server was very kind and chatted with us a bit about our visit. First off, clam chowder here is a non-negotiable. Place was busy so we put our name down and told it would be 45 minutes. We went on a little stroll and 20 minutes later got a text saying our table ready. Cute restaurant well known for their chowder! We arrived around 11 to wait for the opening of the restaurant at 11:30. It was well worth the wait and were seated at the bar. I had an entree size garden salad and the appetizer portion of the the fried Ipswich clams. I love these clams and Boston Sail Loft does them so well-light and crispy coating and the clams are so fresh, tender and briny. I was in Boston for work and wanted seafood. Found this place with great reviews. Since I was a solo eater I was seated quickly. Service was quick i had one of their specials lobster roll, i got it warmed with butter and fries. It was just OK. The lobster was overcooked (it was rubbery) fries really didn't have much seasoning. I could've and probably should've stopped there, but I chose to also order a lobster roll. The lobster roll was good, but nothing truly note worthy. The bread it came did taste bakery fresh. For $40 I was hoping I would be blown away by this lobster roll but it was not meant to be.. The roll did come with a generous helping of fries and a tiny, albeit delicious, side of coleslaw. I can't recommend this place enough! When in Boston make this one of your meals! We brought our adult kids and grandson. He tried lobster for the first time. We actually ate two meals here during our short stay :) I got my favorite meal- clam chowder and a lobster roll (New England style). We did wait over an hour but we walked around the to the nearby shops and it wasn't too bad. The service was great with everyone being so friendly and attentive. Clam chowder, calamari, and service were 10/10. The clam chowder had flavor and nice chucks of clams. The calamari was fried perfectly! This place is a locals favorite and a traveler's secret. If you like being outside, there are three little tables on the back deck - otherwise it's snug bar seating. Probably my favorite seafood restaurant during my 4-day visit to hear the Boston Symphony. The batter is light, the seafood fresh, the views great, the staff very friendly and chill. For not being a local, I thought it was a great idea to have a lobster roll every day of our trip. Boston sale loft did not disappoint with their warm lobster roll accompanied with crispy fries. Sidenote, the side of coleslaw was also great to balance the buttery lobster. We were hesitant to try the clam chowder due to the significant dill appearance, but it truly has a mild taste. If we weren't so full at the time, we would've loved to indulge in their desserts as well as fresh seafood, but we are very pleased with our order as well as our service. This restaurant and bar has their regular menu and also daily specials. The clam chowder was pretty good with pieces of clam and potatoes. I wanted to try their lobster bisque, but unfortunately it is only available on certain days as part of the daily special menu and not available when I visited. The calamari was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sauce was good and paired well with the relish in the sauce. They also have cocktail sauce if you ask. For the lobster roll, you can either choose to have it warm with butter or cold with mayonnaise. I appreciated the generous amount of lobster. The fries were plump and delicious. The Cesar salad was ok, but nothing to make it stand out. The seafood pasta (sautéed seafood portofino) had a good amount of seafood containing scallop, lobster, and 2 big shrimps. It came with red peppers and artichoke. The sauce was a bit on the sour end, so if you don't like sour stuff, the pasta might not be for you. The pasta itself was cooked to my liking where it was not too hard. The Daly peach drink was good if you don't like strong drinks and only had a hint of alcohol and felt a bit diluted. They don't have coke and only had Pepsi. However it was flat and we asked for a replacement which was better and had more bubbles, but still not as bubbly as the canned version. This is one of my favorite places to visit when I'm in the Boston area. You will have the best clam chowder of your life here served in an overflowing cup or bowl. I love to pair my clam chowder with an ALMOST overflowing espresso martini. Truly a delicious combination. The restaurant sits right on the harbor and is really picturesque. If you're not able to sit outside on the deck, the inside area has plenty of windows to watch the water. The owner bends over backwards to make sure you have a good experience, and his staff are always great. My last visit, I was there at opening time and the owner greeted everyone in line and gave a little speech about how long they'd been in business and how important his staff are to him. I was amazed by this place so much I was showing all my family the photos. It's waterfront which is picturesque but it's narrow so there aren't a lot of tables to accommodate the demand. The tables are close together, the foot traffic is one way (you have to pull over between tables to let servers pass) and the bathrooms are tiny. But it is packed for a reason and that's the great seafood. So we started off with clam chowder which is poured to overflow from the mugs. The soup was full of clams, potatoes, dill, and so good and creamy that every spoonful was bliss. A cup is a bit expensive but it is filled to the brim. In a city full of chowdas, this has to be near the top of the pack. The lobster mac n cheese is the real star. It usually comes with salad, but I substituted a vegetable medley which was okay, but the mac n cheese was a thing of beauty. Massive chunks of lobster, like an entire claw's worth adorned the top of a gooey cheese mountain with more hefty lobster chunks underneath. It's got in abundance of all the elements you crave in a decadent bowl of heaven. They don't do reservations, so some on an off time if possible. There was not any street parking that I saw right next to the restaurant since it's on the water. Try your luck with street parking. The restaurant looks like a boat house turned restaurant, tiny and charming, nice views of the water/harbor. If it were a nice day I would have enjoyed a table by the window, but it was cold. We were seated right next to the front door. Which normally would have annoyed me with the door blowing cold air in and out. However I was so distracted by the food, I did not notice, lol. I didn't see any tables for outside, but perhaps they have some, unclear. Service- We arrived and had to put our name on the wait list due to no resy. We waited maybe an hour? We had a drink at Joe's Waterfront up the street while we waited, so it worked out. When we came back to be seated, we were greeted warmly by staff, and had positive interactions from managers and servers through out. Food- yum in the tum. Trying this clam chowder has been on my Boston bucket list for a long time now, and today was finally the day! My boyfriend and I stopped here for a quick visit to fulfill my dream. We were in Boston for a cruise stop on a rainy Monday in October. Fortunately our Son and DIL live there and were kind enough to take the day off work to come pick us up and bring us here for a terrific lunch. We arrived early but the place was already packed. We grabbed drinks from the bar while we waited for a table. The place is narrow and with the rain we didn't want to wait outside, so we made ourselves as small as possible for the short wait. They seated us to the immediate left of the door. Service was fast and efficient. Food came out in a timely manner and was totally delicious. All of us were very happy with our meals. **November 2025: Saturday Evening Visit** My friend requested we have clam chowda while staying in the Boston area and I happily obliged. I found Boston Sail Loft in my search and saw that it was praised for their fresh seafood and creamy soup. Parking was a nightmare especially since it got dark early and there were many pedestrians jaywalking. Nevertheless, we eventually found a parking lot and paid the premium ($28 for 12 hours). The parking lot was only a 5 minute walk to Boston Sail Loft and to my surprise there was a crowd of people waiting at 5pm. We checked in and were told that it would be at least a 30 minute wait (regardless of bar or table seating). It was just very busy. The Quincy Market wasn't too far so we loitered there before returning when I received the text summon. We were seated at a table, which was a good thing since I ordered a ton of food. Since it was Saturday I decided to go for the Saturday specials including the Lobster Bisque and Lobster Roll, in addition to a clam chowder. It was way too much food, but since I was at the start of my vacation I decided to live a little lol The clam chowda and lobster bisque came out quickly and were perfect to warm up during the cold day. The first thing that my friend said when we took his first sip was "wow this is the best clam chowda I've ever had" - and I'd have to agree. It was extremely thick and creamy and the dill seasoning just gave it a nice herby kick to it. The lobster bisque was also very good. It had a deep savory taste and there was a huge lobster chunk on top. Pretty soon afterwards my friend's fish and chips and my lobster roll came. The lobster roll had a TON of very plump lobster meat and the bread was nicely toasted. Service was very friendly and quick and there were people here of all ages and backgrounds. It's definitely a no frills vibe and the seafood shines. Boston Salt Loft really is a gathering place for all and while it's kind of a nightmare to get to I wouldn't hesitate to come back again. We had extra time in Boston before the Bruins game and made it a point to go to the sale loft to try out their famous clam chowder. The chowder was terrible. They were barely any clams, it did not taste like clam chowder. And it was overly seasoned with suppose celery. The cream was absent. The trace of onion, which is important was also app absent. It was basically celery soup The service was pretty quick. And then it wasn't when we wanted to leave and when we ask for containers to put the basically on top of chowders into. I'll give it to my mother who is 92 and sometimes likes Bland soup The ambience is still excellent. The Boston Sail Loft was at every weekend hang out for my crew in the old days. It is pretty disappointing that the food has gone downhill. The rest of the items on the menu were insanely priced. I have to how bad the chowder was. We got out of there.
