My first review made note of the atmosphere, and I cannot say it has changed. However, this updated review includes more notes, such as the fact that I am just realizing how astounded I am to find Vietnamese food being served on a school campus outside of Vietnam. Perhaps there are other such businesses nowadays, after the bánh mì has taken off in popularity in American culinary consciousness, and we are in the midst of an era of increasing Viet food popularity. But being able to get authentic Vietnamese fare at a university campus is pretty nice. I have had the privilege of trying several flavors of bánh mì from Ba Le, and I find them all compelling. The chicken, the ham, and the tofu sandwiches have been all very tasty, and provided me with necessary fuel during a stressful December. Their phở is also pretty nice. I smell it every time I pass by Ba Le. Given that there is usually a bit of a wait here, I'd say Ba Le is quite popular with the community. read more

Got the Spinach Turkey Dried Tomato Panini sandwich which was one of the better Panini sandwiches I've had. Buttery and crunchy bread with a plethora of flavors inside. The cooked turkey complimented the spinach, dried tomato and cheese very well and the pesto spread was just the right amount to add flavor without overpowering the sandwich. Food was 5 stars I'd say the service was good. They were very attentive to customers waiting in line and remembered who ordered what. The only knock I have is with ordering panini sandwiches and pho, there is a bit of a wait to get the food ready especially if it's crowded Ambiance: There are places indoors and outdoors to sit down but it's usually super crowded with college students. And with the tables being in such close proximity indoors it may be hard to have conversations with people you're sitting right next to. I took off one star for the wait time and another for the lack of seats available and the loud atmosphere (but I'm sure if I went at a less crowded time my 3 stars would be 4 stars). This is a great place to fill yourself up for a reasonable price on campus. They will make you a custom sandwich, or a custom pho, or they have several specialty items. My go to here is the eggplant and tofu curry with brown rice. All of the curries come with your choice of white or brown rice or french bread. I don't think anything cost more than $7 or $8, and it's all pretty delicious and filling. Just before Thanksgiving weekend I came here on a whim as I was working on the U.H. Manoa Campus............got a little hungry, so I decided to stop by this place called - Ba-Le Sandwich & Bakery. If you folks dig Vietnamese food like I do, Ba-Le is basically a fast food Vietnamese joint. Where is the Ba-Le Sandwich & Bakery located? It's located on the University of Hawaii (Manoa Campus), just inside of the Manoa Gardens Bar area. This particular Ba-Le is a cafeteria style eatery. You basically walk up to the counter to order your food, then upon paying for your food at the cashiers line, you then look for an open table at the Manoa Gardens bar area to sit & eat. The day I came here, I ended up ordering a Vietnamese style turkey banh mi sandwich. What's a "Banh Mi?" Basically, banh mi in Vietnamese means "bread", or more specifically the French baguette. My Vietnamese style turkey sandwich was topped with pickled daikon & carrots, cucumber, and cilantro. There was suppose to be mayonnaise in my sandwich, but I told the lady to nix the mayo, because you know me and my mayonnaise! Lol! For dessert, I got a giant chocolate chip cookie to go with my sandwich. All of this set me back just $7.00 bucks, which was a pretty good deal considering when I go to other sandwich shops like Subway, or Jersey Mike's Subs, I pay waaaaaaaaaaay more. What can I say about the grub? My turkey banh mi was just okay, nothing outstanding about it............... The sandwich had a fair amount of turkey & vegetables, and the baguette bread had a hard & chew texture to it. If you're not into this type of sandwich, Ba-Le did offer other types of sandwiches on other types of bread like - croissant, honey wheat, or ciabatta bread. I think this has to be the best value for money on campus, even though it is a further walk. You can get full for $6 off a banh mi sandwich! A meal around $5 is rare nowadays. Ba-Le also has some specialty items and the one that caught my eyes were the hainan chicken rice. I eat this regularly at home since my mom makes it and damn! This place gives me a great fix for it if my mom hasn't made it in a while. It takes quite a bit of work to make and for $10, it is a pretty good price. Usually hainan chicken rice is about $15 if you go else where. This also comes with a salad. It is very filling! I also got their banh mi and it is your usual Ba-Le banh mi! I like the selection of food here. I usually get pho, fries, or the vermicelli. For the first time I tried the Mac and Cheese a couple of days ago, and I regret it. It was soupy. I couldn't finish it all. Service is just alright. One time I ordered a Parmesan eggplant sandwich, and the worker gave me a pesto sandwich instead. So this is my fourth year in college and ba le is one of my lunch options on campus. I've never really had a problem with this place until today (maybe because it's just Friday the 13th). There I was, in line to order my usual: ham on french bread with everything else and extra cilantro, toasted. Before they even grabbed cilantro I looked at it and they were ridiculously old and had BROWN SPOTS. I'm specifically picky about my cilantro because I ALWAYS get extra. They had a container full of bad cilantro and I couldn't believe that they were serving that to customers. There was a little bit of good ones and she was grabbing those for me but she still got some bad ones. I thought I'd be fine if I ate some of it but....... a few hours later it came out of me and it wasn't pretty. Thanks a lot Ba Le. HOWEVER, their curry chicken is good but sometimes they put more potatoes than actual chicken. The employees also rush people all the time. This review is for the UH location but I loved also going to the previous downtown location, which is sadly now closed. (I believe there is a super small location located in a mini mart along Fort Street Mall...but that place feels a little dirty haha). I usually go with the Chicken Sandwich ($4.50) on the original french bread. Their breads are SUPER YUMMY, baked fresh daily. If anyone is interested in just buying their bakery/bread products they sell their goods on Tuesday's & Friday's in the downtown farmer's markets! This sandwich is just plain chicken (the lemongrass chicken sandwich is also super popular). It also comes with a special mayo/sauce/shoyu, pickled carrots and daikon (radish) piled high, and parsley. You don't want to miss out on this yummy goodness! They cooked the beef and meatballs on their stove next to the items. They have trays for the pho which they handed over. Difficult, especially when you're trying not to spill. It is cafeteria style so there were other fridges that stored drinks and other cold snacks. Other areas there are displays with more food if sandwiches or pho isn't what you're craving. $7 for this and it's alright. Sauces are provided after ordering,along with other sauces. Bum Mi is pretty easy to make, freal, and 3.75 for a chicken sandwich is kinda steep considering at lee's sandwiches you can do better for 3$ but hey it is on campus and it's still pretty good. My biggest gripe with them is their summer hours suck 11am opening is too late for my 10am bun mi cravings, and i assure you i have these cravings regularly. Best bale on the island. Only bale I know of that has a bar in it! The guy who decided to put a bar in a Vietnamese resturaunt surrounded by college students is a genius! This Bale may not be the best place to get bahn mi or pho but after a few drinks it may become the one of the healthier choices to make in dining. I don't usually go out of my way to eat at BaLe anymore. I see them more as a gateway restaurant into the wonderful world of Vietnamese food. It was, after all my first Vietnamese food experience (at the Kahala Mall BaLe many many years back). Since then I've been to, and experienced, many other Vietnamese restaurants, and have seen that there is so much more out there than BaLe. PROS: + The best (only) Vietnamese food on campus! + BaLe bread + Pupu menu at pauhana time + Open later than other things on campus + There's a bar next to it! CONS: - Not the best deal in town. It can be kind of pricey for what you get - Most of the workers aren't very personable - They're like Nazis with the utensils, and sauce cups - Lines can get long at times This location is a little different, though, because of the circumstances that surround it. What sets this BaLe location apart from others is that it's on the University of Hawaii Manoa campus. This makes a big difference because they've got a captive audience here, and they're the only option for any kind of South-East Asian food on campus. They've got the standard BaLe items, like bahn mi sandwiches, summer rolls and pho, but they also got some other hot foods, like curries, noodles, spring rolls, salads, sandwiches, pizza, and chicken wings. They also serve some kind of sweet and creamy iced coffee/tea drink. I'm not sure exactly what it is because I've never ordered one before, but my co-worker seem to love it. Another great thing about this location is that it's open later than the other eateries on campus because it's connected to the on campus bar, Manoa Gardens. They also have a pupu menu that starts in the afternoon just in time for the after class/work crowd. I've stopped by the bar a few times after work to watch a game on TV, or listen to a band in the courtyard, and I've ordered some of the pupus from BaLe. The service here isn't the friendliest. Most of the food servers behind the counters seem like they have just about no personality when it comes to serving their customers. The cashiers, on the other hand are usually personable enough, and seem to remember their regulars. The cashiers are also the guardians of utensils and sauce cups. Apparently you have to ask a cashier for it if you don't want to eat with your fingers, or want to put sauce in something other than your dish. Unfortunately they don't tell you this until after you pay, and are standing at the sauce station looking for cups and utensils. But apparently if you're a regular they'll give it to you when you pay. If not, then you've got to ask for it. Can you tell that I wasn't given any of those things when I paid? It's a good option if you're already on campus, but I wouldn't go out of my way to come here to eat. Especially with the cost of parking on Campus. It's pretty much your standard BaLe minus some of the normal variety, but with some extras to compliment the bar that's in the same room. Check it out if you're on campus during lunch, or meeting up with someone to watch a game at the bar. read more

Bale...Is by far the cheapest place to eat on campus but I think its horrible. As a UH student I spent most of my freshmen year eating at bale but after a year I said, "no more!" I would always get the chicken sandwich on French or ciabatta bread because It was the cheapest thing on campus. But after getting food poisoning twice...I refuse to eat a bale sandwich. Sure getting food poisoning was a quick way to get a temporary 6-pack but it was so NOT worth it. I then returned one day to try pho. I never tried pho before and after eating bale's pho I was like, "Eh? Why does everyone make such a big fuss about pho?" But I later tried "real" pho and it is amazing. Bale's is just fake pho, nothing great. The only upside is that Bale is the only place on campus where you can drink alcohol starting at lunch. I am uninspired by this Ba Le on the UH campus at Hemenway Hall. They don't seem to really put in the right amount of condiments to make my banh mi go. It always seems a little dry and not enough hoi sin or fish sauce along with the daikon and cilantro. Plus, while it's not their fault, I hate having fish sauce on my hands going back to work. It feels choke icky. I bet no one has ever said "choke icky" ever in the history of Western Civilization. Can get a "first to say" on Yelp? I usually get the chicken meatball banh mi on a french roll. The other day, the meatball seemed to have bone bits in it too. I guess the microwave didn't take care of that on reheat. I don't know what it is because I usually like banh mi places, but I really don't like going here. Maybe I'm just being moody and I am sorry to take it out on this one. Oh pho, I miss you pho, I miss you so !!!! On my top things that I miss from the States that I can not find (thus far) in Florence ... is pho. It's my feel good food . . . big bowl of broth, bean sprouts, basil, pepper, tofu and of course rice noodles. One bowl of this magic combo can calm my most stormy nerves. So needless to say I came here quite frequently . . . during my school days. I agree with Grace O. this place is nothing fancy (I love it) . They've got pho, a handful of pre-made salads, wraps, rice paper wraps with peanut sauce. You also have the choice of ordering a sandwich with your own choice of ingredients. In the same building as Bale, there is a bar so you can order alcoholic drinks or BAle has drinks such as cold jasmine tea (my favorite) or tapioca ball drinks, soda, water, thai iced tea (all bottled) . Coming here during the lunch rush hours it can be tough to find a table, even outside. Bale . . . to this day I still pronounce this place like BAIL (instead of BA-le) because when my mom came to visit me at school she asked me ' oh what kind of food is "BAIL"?' I always come here, since Campus Center is always so packed and I don't have to weave my way through %&*$(@()#*@&($@(*#&$#&$@#)(%&!(@*&@!#((*@# construction that will take another 8 years to complete. Anyways, I like the food here. Standard Bale fare, nothing fancy. I usually get the ham and pate sandwich, or an order of pad thai. The sandwich line is always longer so I tend to get pad thai more often. Sometimes I just grab their spring or summer roll combos, which are great too -- they don't really fill me up though :P I always get the pad thai, but it's not very pad thai-ish. It's still good though, but if you're expecting a really authentic pad thai, don't. As a noodle dish though, it's tasty. I always put a lot of Sriracha to give it a little more of a kick. The ladies aren't the most outgoing, but they are efficient. Even if they are very busy, do NOT give them attitude. This one time I went in line to get pad thai, and I was standing behind these two white girls who were SOOOOO obnoxious. The Bale ladies weren't even busy, but one clearly thought so little of the way the girls were acting that she dilly-dallied with cleaning the pho station when she could have easily come over and given the girls their pad thai. The girls were scoffing and saying some pretty rude things. Finally after about 10 minutes, the woman finally came over and dished out their orders. I am always friendly with them so whenever I go to the pad thai line, one of the ladies will always come over immediately even if they have a long sandwich line to give me my order. I love BaLe on campus! I go to UH Manoa and this is a great place to eat. It's cheaper than eating in Campus Center and Paradise Palms for sure but it's not a cheap eats place (for students, at least). Sandiwches are all good. I really like the lemongrass chicken on the French Bread. The service people always listen to you regarding sandwich choices like the pickled vegetables, mayonnaise, and hot sauce even though I always get everything on it. The Pho is also pretty awesome, a huge bowl for like six or seven dollars and there is a small condiment bar where you can add spice or salty to it. I also like the asian drinks and snacks that they sell but I don't like the cookies (too dry and crumbly) or the chocolate covered croissant (plastic-y chocolate). They also have iced coffee and boba drinks which are nice and sweet. I'm not a huge fan of boba, but the drinks themselves are pretty alright. The salads are pretty salad-y. Nothing too special but I do like the springroll and noodle one pretty good. I didn't care too much for the Chef's salad (though I never do like anybody's recipe for this salad) and the papaya salad. I absolutely love the shrimp summer rolls and the tuna ones are alright too, but the texture can be weird for some people (mainly, my white boyfriend). I also had my first legal drink here on my 21st birthday. It was right after a killer physiology exam and my friend offered to buy me a drink. I told the bartender it was my birthday and got a free shot of Jaeger (don't know how to spell that, sorry). For my birthday drink I got a Starburst, just a bunch of different flavored vodkas topped with seven up or sprite. the vodka filled up pretty much half or two thirds of the 16 oz cup so I was pretty happy about that, Tasted pretty good as well. Very strong for the 7 dollars it cost. I don't think the bar runs too late into the evening, but it's a nice place on campus to drink. Conveniently located on campus, this place is my go-to for lunch! It's quick, cheap and good- they also accept meal blocks + points which was super useful since I moved out of the dorms and never ate at their cafeteria and had so much blocks + points left. I've tried a lot of their menus since they pretty much have the same entrees everyday. I wish they'd switch it once in a while. For the sandwich, I usually order chicken or lemongrass chicken on croissant. I've also tried their pad thai, which is alright. Their curry is a little too much on the sweet side for me. I'd go to India Cafe on campus if I was craving curry. Their spring rolls are pretty legit, but instead of using the sauce that comes with, I normally use the sweet chili sauce instead. Another one of my faves is their hot paninis, especially their turkey panini. It has turkey, swiss cheese and some dried tomato paste- aaah so good. PHO. how can i forget their pho. I'm so accustomed to their pho since I used to eat it almost everyday. I always get it with the flank steak, rare beef and beef balls. My friend goes to UH at Manoa so I came here with her for some student org group thing that was going while I was visiting. Anyway, I didn't really try the food. She ha a plate of fries and I munched on them. While hot and crunchy they were also quite greasy and tasted like they had been frozen before. The people working here are super friendly though sometimes a bit forgetful when you're ordering. The real reason to come here is the cheap beer. They offer a 32 oz beer (of anything on tap) for $5.75. It's a ridiculously good deal and I appreciated partaking in that offer while here. read more

This particular location on the UH-Manoa campus is centrally located on campus and dishes up their sandwiches, warm food items, and pho in a quick orchestration that is down right quick! The sandwiches are made on warmed bread and pick the meat you desire along with your typical toppings such as pickled vegetables, cilantro, and such! The pho is piping hot and not that bad. UGHHHH. I can't remember the last time I ate something so bad that it made me have watery diarrhea poop immediately after. I know, I know. This is TMI and just disgusting, but that's basically what the food does to you. It's so repulsive your body has to have it out just as quickly as you put it in. I should note that the sandwiches, for the most part, are good. Yet their are not consistently good. Some days the french bread is soft and fresh, others it feels like you're gnawing at slabs of stone. The meats on the sandwiches vary in freshness and flavor, so you're in for a real goody bag of potential suckiness when you order them. As for the rest of the menu: Hot Wings -- had them once, never again. First of all, the BBQ sauce on them was so burnt and sour tasting, and it was caked onto the wings (not saucey, it was literally like a frosting texture). I tried my best to salvage them by scraping it off with no such luck. Even the ranch dressing dip that they provide couldn't save them. Oh, and the wings were undercooked, so two of the eight I received were raw and inedible. Pho -- I don't know where to begin. WHY IS IT SO OILY? I don't understand. It's like a quarter inch thick layer of oil floating at the top, which would make sense why I need to run to the bathroom immediately. Your pho works more like a laxative than a refreshing and light meal. The soup is never hot enough, and the chicken/flank/balls are all pre-cooked. I hate that they don't even try to serve it in actual bowls, but instead for convenience provide them in Styrofoam ones, which actually taint the flavor of the soup. Yikes! Salads/Rolls -- Now, I should disclose that I am allergic to shellfish, so anything involving shrimp is unknown to me. These salads come with a watered down nuoc cham. The salads made with vermicelli noodles are prepared well ahead of time, and thus the noodles bunch together, and the only means to free them is to break it up by force. I want to continue to rant, believe me. Tapioca is gross. Cookies are gross. Milk tea is gross. I don't even know how this place is established here and remains a staple for college students. So I can see how easily it might be for someone to get totally plastered in between classes... And the biology office is right across the road. (I got my Bachelor's in Biology BTW.) The pho here is not bad. I'm surprised that it actually comes close to piping hot like it's supposed to. One would think the pho here would be mediocre and luke warm, sans the veggies and skimping on the meat... Well, that's what I thought. Fortunately, I always expected the worst and I always received way better quality than I had initially expected. And they don't skimp on the noodles or meat, surprisingly. (Or maybe I was lucky?) The summer rolls and spring rolls that are already pre-made and packaged aren't bad either. And, the sandwiches are actually pretty good and fresh-ish. I don't think I would ever go out of my way to visit this location. Well, not unless I was on campus... Campus Center is way too expensive these days. 3 stars for convenience, accessibility on campus, affordability, happy hour prices, and 3/4 way decent pho. read more
