I usually head down to "Curry Row" on 6th Street, but this place is much closer to my apartment, so my wife and I decided to give it a try. I made a reservation for 2 on their Website, which was easy. We walked a few blocks and walked into Tandoor Oven, and were impressed with the upscale and modern feel of the restaurant. We were immediately greeted by the host. I told him we had a reservation and he knew my name, so I figured I was the only one who made a reservation that night! He guided us to a nice romantic table near the window, we sat, and he gave us menus and then brought water. My wife and I perused the menu and checked out some of the dishes the other customers were enjoying. I ordered papadum with Lemon Pickle, and for our mains, I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, and my wife ordered Southern Spice Chicken, as well as Pilau rice and Naan bread. I prefer Lime Pickle, but I was impressed with the Lemon Pickle, as well as their chutneys. Our mains came, and while I ordered mine spicy, it wasn't very spicy at all, but wow, what great flavors! My wife and I both enjoyed our mains immensely, as well as the sides- the Naan was thin and crispy, and I could tell it was freshly made. The rice was perfect as well. Service was wonderful, attentive without being overbearing. This place is very nice and modern, and very welcoming. The staff is friendly, and I feel they really appreciate your business. Great service, food and ambiance. I loved the slightly sweet crisps and sauces they served while waiting for our food. I had an order of tandoori chicken and samosas as my entre, and felt quite full after. I'd recommend getting a sauce with the samosas. If you're picking up / getting delivery, the food is actually just as good. Here's what you shouldn't miss: -Chicken or Lamb Biryani - big portion, lots of flavor. Get a side of chutney to mix in as well -Chicken Tikka Massala - excellent. Make sure you get extra naan for dipping -Tandoori Chicken - they actually give you most of a rotisserie chicken. My sister and I needed something to fill us up well before going to The Met, so we picked our favorite cuisine! Tandoor Oven has a classy ambience, fantastic service, and absolutely delicious food. We ordered the samosas for our appetizer, which were hot, perfectly made, and came with two scrumptious sauces and chutney. We also got the garlic naan, which was perfectly baked and topped with real garlic instead of garlic powder. The tikka masala has the perfect amount of kick without overpowering the flavor, which is so rich and the perfect balance of tangy and savory. Price-wise it's pretty average for NYC. First of all, the restaurant was cold and drafty. Given the weather outside was also cold and drafty, perhaps the restaurant needs a double entrance to minimize the inside cold. I have to say that the service was poor. Delay for our lunch was more than a half hour even though there were only two other tables there with customers. No offer of a second glass of wine nor were our water glasses refilled; in fact, our waiter never inquired if we were pleased with our meal at all. The place does not offer a lunch menu, so the Tandoori Chicken was a full plate. My chicken was fair, but my son's Goat Vindaloo was mainly full of bones. The meal was just okay. 5 stars all the way! Oh my Lord have mercy! The samosas were epic The drums of heaven were legendary but the star of the night by far was the chicken sula tika! We did the Chocken tika masala as our main and were SO delighted! For desert we did a nice mango lassi. So refreshing and yummy! Our waiter was very accommodating, gave excellent recommendations, and made us all very happy with our decisions. The wine was good too and OH MY GOD let me not forget the Naan! Duuuuuude! The owner is a responsive and considerate gentleman who is happy to accommodate your special requests. Additionally they don't have a non alcoholic drinks menu but they do make mango lassi - though it isn't on the menu so you won't know how much you'll be tried. We first ordered the Manchurian cauliflower and drums of heaven for appetizers which were delicious! Each of the appetizers came with 4 pieces which was great for two of us. For our main course we ordered the chicken vindaloo and the Kashmiri Rogan Josh (lamb). The chicken vindaloo was mild which was great since I am not a super spicy lover - but they can crank up the spice if needed! Our favorite was the lamb dish which came out a bit spicy and the meat was nice and soft. The complimentary rice was a great addition as well. We got great garlic naan as well. I went with my family for a graduation lunch here and the food was so authentic and full of flavor. Since I am vegetarian I had the malai kofta which was creamy and divine. The others ordered their lamb dum biryani, chicken tikka masala, and naan which were equally teeming with flavor. Everything came in shareable portions! This was actually my first time having Indian food and I was blown away. I personally have never had Indian and I was a bit intimidated to go and order the food. I went during the lunch shift on a weekday and there weren't to many people inside so it was a very nice atmosphere. The menu is very overwhelming if you've never had Indian food before and it took me some time to order. I actually googled what was good Indian food to order and ended up being getting a crash course according to my last in different flavors. I really like peanut dishes so I ordered Chicken Kurma: meat cooked with cream, almond and sweet spice. Rice is on the house and usually made for the table. The best choice ever and I learned about Indian specialty Bread: Garlic Nan (unleavened bread freshly baked in classy oven) special flat bread with/ garlic flavor and Keema Nan (spice flavored meat-filled Nan bread).
