Oh Babbitt's what happened to you!! We have always loved this store and made a point t to stop in whenever we came through Flagstaff. We were here on the 4th of July and were so disappointed with the store. I was thinking about buying a new pair of Altra Trail running/hiking shoes and found the exact pair I wanted. But there was no one that I could see in the store helping customers. I waited a bit but no one ever came. The worst part is as I went up to the counter there were 4 employees behind the counter- 2 on their phones texting or whatever and 2 employees just chatting with each other. Never mind- I live in the Eastern Sierra and can buy my pair at Sage to Summit or East Side in Bishop, CA where I have always found them to go above and beyond on customer service! read more

Very welcoming atmosphere. We are new to the area. Everyone was super kind and helpful at Babbitt's. Somehow we got really lucky and Owen ended up helping us find our gear. Owen was amazing, extremely helpful, fun and knowledgeable. He made the whole normally tedious shopping experience enjoyable. He helped us find comfortable gear, without overdoing it for our experience and budget. Owen was great and shared many valuable tips about the area. Babbitt's had a small seasonal shoe sale going on that I was also able to take advantage of. Same time, Babbitt's was hosting a low key puppy adoption, which I was not able to take advantage of, but I did enjoy petting and holding puppies, which added a nice caring vibe to it all. read more

Babbitt's has a good selection of outdoor gear, but everything was overpriced. It was cool when we were in Flagstaff, and I was looking for a sweatshirt or light jacket, but there was nothing of value. Hubby picked up a couple of souvenir stickers, but we had to listen to the kid at the register talk about her "ex-girlfriend" while checking us out. Ugh, not necessary. read more

I've been in the store twice in the last week looking for a new pair of women's Teva sandals. On the first visit, a young male employee asked if I needed help, which I appreciated. Seeing anything on the lower displays is impossible due to pain. On my second visit, following up on the Teva search, three young males at the front "register" did not acknowledge me, even to say hello. They did, however, keep up their enthusiastic banter with each other. What a shame when employees are not taught to welcome customers and/or offer assistance. read more

After checking in to our residence in Flagstaff, we decided to walk downtown and grab some food. On the way we passed Babbitt's Backcountry Outfitters. Places like these are few and far between in Tampa so we had to go in and explore. Babbitt's Backcountry Outfitters has supplies and equipment for every type of outdoor activity you could imagine. We spent some time perusing the camping and hiking equipment as well as the skiing things and were approached by multiple employees who wanted to know if we needed assistance. While I wanted to purchase so much more, we forced ourselves to stock up on only a few small odds and ends. The prices were slightly more expensive than online but being able to see it, hold it and try it on seemed worth the few extra dollars. The best part about Babbitt's? We went to dinner, realized we wanted to purchase something else, and were able to return and get it because of how late Babbitt's stays open. If you find yourself in Flagstaff needing some outdoor items, give Babbitt's a try. read more

Right smack dab in the middle of the the Flagstaff historic district lies Babbit's Backcountry Outfitters. Location, location! This is very hard to miss and if you're heading out or planning to head out into the the "Great Wide" then you really should not miss this! Full selection of all your outdoorsy needs, from foot wear to headlamps, tents, research material, snowshoes, to pullovers and under gear. Though I do have to add their prices are be bit on the uppity end, but they only stock high quality items. Besides, you wouldn't want to find yourself wishing you had brought a sturdier tent or breathable, drip dry clothing. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. Just don't let them fool you about finding the fearsome Jackalope!!! read more

Had an amazing experience in this store! We went to find hiking shoes for my husband and couldn't figure out which shoes to go with. We were helped by an extremely knowledgeable gentleman who brought out at least half a dozen pairs to try on and gave us the pros and cons of each brand. Even though none of them fit my husband's feet and we left without buying anything, the salesman was very gracious and beyond helpful. Located on the corner in a prominent brick building Babitts competes with Peace Surplus for title of largest outdoor gear store in Flagstaff. There are a lot of outdoor stores in Flagstaff and they are all within walking distance of each other. Babbit's is housed in the most impressive building and it was the first shop we went to when we visited Flagstaff. They didn't have what we were looking for which was a guide book for climbing in Az so we ended up making the rounds to the other stores looking for our book. We did receive friendly service from a cute blond girl and although her co workers were huddled around the cash wrap socializing she pulled herself away to help us with our questions and when we couldn't find what we were looking for she recommended other places in town to continue our search, although she pointed us in the wrong direction when it came to the location of the climbing gym. We had a nice tour of Flagstaff because of it and saw parts of the city we probably wouldn't have otherwise, and considering it was a beautiful sunny fall day we didn't mind walking around lost in circles. read more

I liked Babbitt's. It was stocked with alot of things Burton and more Burton. I love the fact that they sell snowboards in 98 degree weather. That was impressive. They also sell some coats, and even snow skies, right now, in 98 degree weather. They have tons of camping paraphernalia, with all kinds of personal water reservoirs. But what still stands in my mind is the snowboard equipment. mainly the Burton, and the snowboarding shoes, and bindings. There were even snowboarding beanies and gloves. Also there's tons of skateboard wheels and bearings. And sunglasses, not cheap sunglasses, but the real thing. I like stores like this. Try to find snowboard equipment of this type in Kansas City right now, and it falls flat. This is a great store. I also loved the building where it stands. It's a square corner building preserved. read more

This shop is FLAGSTAFF through and through. They have great selections of outdoor items for camping, hiking, kayaking and anything else you could possibly think of. One of my favorite items to get here are water bottles and sandals for the kids. The store is smack dab in the middle of downtown and you can tell it's been there forever, in a good way. The one little complaint I have is the attention of the associates. Not that they are rude at all, they just are barely present. It could be that they don't employ a large group so they only have a person or two on at a time but you don't get a lot of attention from anyone that works there. We will always give our business to this local store as long as we can. read more

Popped in Saturday for some headlamps to explore Lava River Cave. The two guys working were awesome. Gave us some good advice, good laughs and they had exactly what we needed. Had lunch nearby and decided to check out this place..the old neon sign caught my eye and I managed to drag the whole family in. The place is large and stocked for all the different outdoor activities (climbing, hiking, rock climbing etc). Things sold include: - tents -camel baks - ruffwear (gear for dogs!) :) - spikes for boots - sunglasses - boots -children's boots - beanies/hats - socks - large variety - gloves They carry many brands that I've not heard of...but they all seem sturdy! I ended up buying a beanie at the store. Cash register was at the front of the store...the sales people were talking to other people, and didn't seem to acknowledge other customers in the store until I went up to pay. I would go in there if I had to get some gear for the town's activities. No "sale" signs though. Tip-bits: Exchanges and refunds require receipt. I found this great place right in the middle of the historic district. What I liked most was that they were open at 9:00 AM, whereas a lot of the surrounding businesses did not seem to open until 10:00 AM. Babbitt's Backcountry Outfitters is a well stocked store with a variety of products to support hiking, rock climbing, camping, and many other outdoor activities. They have some good quality winter wear products, and all kinds of name brand gear. I even found some awesome products for my dog, which I had not been able to find in other stores. Best off all I found the staff friendly and knowledgeable about the products and local region. I am planning a trip to Moab UT, and the guys that worked there had some good suggestions for me about the area. read more

Stopped by during our visit to Flagstaff, while walking the downtown scene. Grabbed a few nutrition items and a map of the surrounding area. While checking out, the friendly sales associates gave us some advice of what to see and where to camp in Sedona, since we told them we were unlucky finding a camp spot in the usual park camp grounds. The sales associate (didn't catch his name) told us of a backcountry spot above the canyon, with an amazing view and less foot traffic. We headed up the next day, pleasantly amazed of his recommendation. We were the only ones camping and it was perfect and exactly what we prefer for camping! Walked in with 2 of my daughters who attend NAU. Completly ignored the entire time we were in the store. My daughters were trying on jackets and windbreakers. I asked an employee if they had an item in a different size in the back or was everything out. He stated he had no idea if they had more, then walked away. As my daughters were trying on jackets, I walked over to their shoe wall. I wanted to try on a pair of shoes. Again, completely ignored. We ended up leaving and walked across the street. We were greeted with a warm welcome and helped almost immediately. We purchased over $2500.00 worth of clothing from them. I would suggest looking elsewhere for the items you need. read more

I get it, its a small business locally owned in flagstaff. But that doesnt mean that everything has to cost 150% of what you would pay online or at REI. they have all "gucci" stuff for all the "gucci" campers. Its for rich flagstaff hippies, because they are the only people who can afford to shop there. Unless you are a trustifarian, i would go to the REI. they also dont have a solid selection. read more

If you are a tourist definitely go here; Grand Canyon/Flagstaff shirts are cheaper than those IN the canyon! I recently bought hiking boots at Babbitt's. I have hard-to-fit feet. Clay spent a LOT of time with me trying several different pairs of boots and inserts. We finally found a pair that seemed to work but it was a 1/2 size off from ideal. He ordered the correct size and sent it to my home in the Phoenix area. I just received the boots today and they seem to fit very well. I am looking forward to putting them to work. read more

They also know the limitations their stock and are straightforward in sharing with you. The whole place has a great vibe. I came back home to LA with one of their store stickers in my luggage. I was looking for a mesh food sack for a Grand Canyon trip, with insufficient time to order online. Not available in the SF Bay Area (here they sell bear canisters for the Sierra Nevada). In a flash of brilliance I remembered visiting this store a few years ago, so phoned them. They had exactly what I needed, and held it for the friend who would be driving through Flagstaff. I offered to pre-pay with credit card but Matt said that wasn't required. Great service, and they saved our bacon -- well, our gorp and granola! read more
